Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman addresses a crowd at Montgomery County Community College on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

  • A bill from Sen. Lindsey Graham would impose a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks.
  • Dr. Mehmet Oz's campaign on Tuesday said he believes the issue is a matter for the states to decide.
  • John Fetterman, his rival for Senate, said Oz should clearly state whether he'd vote for the bill.

A Republican proposal to impose a national ban on abortion after 15 weeks is putting some GOP candidates in a difficult spot, forcing candidates such as Dr. Mehmet Oz to profess a commitment to ending a procedure he likened to "murder" while not alienating moderates who support the right to choose.

On Tuesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, introduced a bill that would prohibit doctors from terminating a pregnancy after 15 weeks, with no exception for fetal abnormalities that are typically spotted later on. The legislation has threatened to upend what had been the GOP line on abortion since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade: that the matter is one for the states to decide, not the federal government.

In Pennsylvania, the Oz campaign insisted that the TV personality turned Republican nominee for US Senate would not want to interfere with state laws on whether a person can terminate a pregnancy.

In a statement, Oz spokesperson Brittany Yanick told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the candidate "is pro-life with three exceptions: life of the mother, rape, and incest."

The statement did not directly address the Graham proposal. But, Yanick said, "as a senator, he'd want to make sure the federal government is not involved in interfering with the state's decisions on the topic."

The statement came a day after Oz said he would support federal legislation protecting same-sex marriage, a stance that angered some conservatives who have never warmed to the physician, despite his being endorsed by former President Donald Trump.

Yanick did not immediately respond to an Insider request for comment on how Oz would vote should he be elected this fall and the Graham bill be brought to the Senate floor by a Republican majority.

Oz's Democratic rival, Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, wasted no time responding to the comment. Fetterman held a rally on Sunday trumpeting his support for abortion rights.

"A federal abortion ban would sure seem to interfere with a state's decision on the topic of abortion," Fetterman said in a statement. "Dr. Oz and his team need to stop the spin and stop the bullshit. This is a bill that he would actually have to vote on. Oz needs to tell us — yes or no, would you support this bill?"

If he were in the Senate, Fetterman added, he would be "a HELL NO."

SNL: Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz Weigh In on Trump Acquittal https://briefnews.eu/snl-mitch-mcconnell-lindsey-graham-ted-cruz-weigh-in-on-trump-acquittal/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-mitch-mcconnell-lindsey-graham-ted-cruz-weigh-in-on-trump-acquittal/#respond Sun, 14 Feb 2021 13:03:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-mitch-mcconnell-lindsey-graham-ted-cruz-weigh-in-on-trump-acquittal/

Just hours after the senate voted to acquit Donald Trump, Saturday Night Live lampooned some of the very Republicans who helped the former president avoid conviction.

The episode opened with a Fox News parody, hosted by “human White Claw” Tucker Carlson (played by Alex Moffat). After a loose collection of scare-mongering non-sequiturs, Carlson cut to an interview with Kate McKinnon’s Sen. Lindsey Graham.

“It’s a great day for 30 percent of America,” Graham said. “This trial was offensive and absurd — like a frickin’ episode of Rick and Morty.

“We all agree the attack on the Capitol was a horrible thing, but just because the rioters were yelling ‘fight for Trump’ doesn’t mean they meant Donald Trump,” Graham argued. “Could’ve been some real Tiffanyheads, maybe even some Eric stans, I don’t know. Regardless, the trial is over and now we can move past this and focus on the serious issues: Locking up Hillary and freeing beautiful Britney Spears.”

Graham was then joined by fellow Trump lackey, Aidy Bryant’s Sen. Ted Cruz.

“Like any impartial juror, we took it upon ourselves to meet with the defense lawyers to give them some very simple legal advice, like ‘Stop!’ and ‘Don’t!’” Cruz said. Added Graham, “Ted and I are extremely proud of Trump’s lawyers, who are both partners at the law firm of Cellino & Yikes.”

What followed were excerpts from the trial featuring Trump’s attorneys Bruce Castor (Mikey Day) Michael van der Veen (Pete Davidson). The latter, whose name is allegedly dutch for “Man of the Penis,” declared the impeachment trial the “worst thing that’s been in the senate chamber in the history of… a couple of weeks.”

Last but not least was a one-on-one interview with Mitch McConnell (played again by Beck Bennett), who voted to acquit Trump.

“Everyone knows you cannot impeach a former president,” he argued. “That’s why we should have impeached him before, back when I said we couldn’t.”

Eventually, Carlson asked the senate minority leader what he really thinks of Trump. “I think he’s guilty as hell, and the worst person I ever met!” he answered. “I hope every city, county and state locks his ass up!”

After getting that off his neck, McConnell revealed what he has planned for the Biden administration: “I don’t know about my colleagues, but I plan to reach my hand across the aisle… and then yank it back, slide it across my hair and say, ‘Too slow!’”

All Rise Promotes Lindsey Gort to Series Regular for Season 2 https://briefnews.eu/all-rise-promotes-lindsey-gort-to-series-regular-for-season-2/ https://briefnews.eu/all-rise-promotes-lindsey-gort-to-series-regular-for-season-2/#respond Wed, 05 Aug 2020 00:08:21 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/all-rise-promotes-lindsey-gort-to-series-regular-for-season-2/

Some potentially good news for Mark and Amy’s romance on All Rise: The CBS legal drama has promoted Lindsey Gort, who recurred during the freshman run, to series regular for Season 2, our sister site Deadline reports.

Gort plays private defense lawyer Amy Quinn, who began a romantic relationship with Deputy District Attorney Mark Callan (Wilson Bethel) during the first season. In May’s pandemic-set finale, the couple decided to take a big step and quarantine together. On the career front, the character joined Mark and Judge Lola Carmichael’s law school buddy Rachel Audubon at her new firm.

“Mark and Amy, where we leave them at the end [of the Season 1 finale] is like, ‘Huh, that should be interesting,’ because we can fast-forward and see, ‘Oh, have they moved forward?’” co-showrunner Dee Lawrence-Harris previously told TVLine.

Gort’s other TV credits include Lucifer, Impastor and The Carrie Diaries (where she portrayed young Samantha Jones).

Although it is not yet clear when All Rise will return for Season 2 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the show is on CBS’ “fall” schedule, where it will continue to air Mondays at 9/8c.

All Rise fans, are you excited to see more of Amy? Hit the comments with your thoughts and hopes for Amy/Mark!

Ahead of Lindsey Morgan’s Directorial Debut, The 100 Star Reflects on Raven’s ‘Saving Grace’ Over 7 Chaotic Seasons https://briefnews.eu/ahead-of-lindsey-morgans-directorial-debut-the-100-star-reflects-on-ravens-saving-grace-over-7-chaotic-seasons/ https://briefnews.eu/ahead-of-lindsey-morgans-directorial-debut-the-100-star-reflects-on-ravens-saving-grace-over-7-chaotic-seasons/#respond Wed, 01 Jul 2020 00:13:57 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ahead-of-lindsey-morgans-directorial-debut-the-100-star-reflects-on-ravens-saving-grace-over-7-chaotic-seasons/

While Raven appears to be getting a good handle on the ever-expanding universe of The 100, her portrayer’s experience has been slightly different.

“This show does something different every season, and this season is complicated AF,” Lindsey Morgan, who makes her directorial debut with Wednesday’s episode (The CW, 8/7c) tells TVLine. “As a director, getting the lore right is the most important thing. I can’t get the world wrong. So I found myself really studying it, making sure all my T’s were crossed and my I’s were dotted. People are like, ‘Oh, was it easier because you’ve been on the show? And I’m like, ‘No!’”

Morgan also appreciated the opportunity to step into the minds of several characters with whom Raven doesn’t normally interact. Not only is her episode a dramatic showcase for Hope and Diyoza — newly reunited in an alien prison after a decades-long separation — but it also dives deep into the damaged psyche of an empty, heartbroken Echo.

“I approached them the same way I would approach my character,” Morgan says. “It was really just me getting to put myself in the shoes of all my cast mates and thinking how I could help to elevate or inspire them as actors.” (Revealing additional specifics about these characters’ developments would spoil this unpredictable hour. But don’t worry, we’ll go deep after it airs.)

The 100 RecapWith The 100‘s series finale creeping ever closer, Morgan says she can look back on Raven’s journey with pride. “She’s been through so much, arguably some of the worst things on the show,” Morgan says. “She has failed, but she never fully lost her resilience. She has questioned, but she never fully lost her faith in love and in people and in herself. I feel like she was also tested in every way imaginable, but she never lost her heart — and I don’t think anyone would blame her if she had. I always held onto that for Raven. In the end, it’s her saving grace.”

The end of a long-running show is always a surreal experience, but Morgan says her physical farewell to The 100 was especially “strange” because of the coronavirus pandemic. “It felt like The 100 was seeping into reality,” she says. “It was weird and confusing, but in true 100 fashion, we kept going. We brought our A game and did the best that we could. It was unfortunately very unceremonious at the end because we all had to finish shooting as quickly as possible in order to go home and quarantine. We didn’t have a wrap party, so we didn’t have as much time to say goodbye. We weren’t even allowed to hug!”

Unlike hugs, however, tears were not in short supply. “I remember on that last day, our AD was [announcing everyone’s series wrap], and it was tears every time. And we have a huge cast! So there was a lot of crying, then makeup, then shooting again. It was crazy. We made something really special, and I’m proud of that.”

With her knees 'broken beyond repair,' Lindsey Vonn retiring after worlds https://briefnews.eu/with-her-knees-broken-beyond-repair-lindsey-vonn-retiring-after-worlds/ https://briefnews.eu/with-her-knees-broken-beyond-repair-lindsey-vonn-retiring-after-worlds/#respond Fri, 01 Feb 2019 18:55:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/with-her-knees-broken-beyond-repair-lindsey-vonn-retiring-after-worlds/

Lindsey Vonn has only two races remaining on her aching knees.

The women's all-time leader in World Cup wins announced Friday that she will retire from ski racing after this month's world championships in Sweden.

The 34-year-old Vonn had been planning to retire in December but changed her plans because of persistent pain in both of her knees, which she fully realized after failing to finish a race in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, last month

"It's been an emotional 2 weeks making the hardest decision of my life, but I have accepted that I cannot continue ski racing," Vonn wrote on Instagram . "I will compete at the World Championships in Downhill and SG (super-G) next week in Are, Sweden and they will be the final races of my career."

The worlds open with the women's super-G on Tuesday in the Swedish resort of Are. The women's downhill is scheduled for Feb. 10.

"You have consistently raised the bar, you have created a legacy that will live forever, and you have given us all some of the greatest memories in our sport," Tiger Shaw, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski and Snowboard, wrote on Twitter.

Vonn's right knee is permanently damaged from previous crashes. The American has also torn ACLs, suffered fractures near her left knee, broken her ankle, sliced her right thumb, had a concussion and more. She's limited now to about three runs per day, and her aching body can't handle the workload of other skiers.

"My body is broken beyond repair and it isn't letting me have the final season I dreamed of," Vonn said. "My body is screaming at me to STOP and it's time for me to listen."

However, with 82 World Cup wins, Vonn will not be able to match the overall record of 86 held by Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark.

"Honestly, retiring isn't what upsets me. Retiring without reaching my goal is what will stay with me forever," Vonn said. "However, I can look back at 82 World Cup wins, 20 World Cup titles, 3 Olympic medals, 7 World Championship medals and say that I have accomplished something that no other woman in HISTORY has ever done, and that is something that I will be proud of FOREVER!"

In her announcement, Vonn also made public for the first time that she had yet another surgery on her right knee following last season.

"A large portion of cartilage that had delaminated from my bone was removed," Vonn said, without specifying which bone. "My crash in Lake Louise last year was much more painful than I let on, but I continued to race because I wanted to win a medal in the Olympics for my late grandfather."

Vonn achieved that goal by winning a bronze medal in downhill at last year's Pyeongchang Games.

But then she crashed again during training in Copper Mountain, Colorado, in November, and tore the lateral collateral ligament and sustained three fractures in her left knee.

"Despite extensive therapy, training and a knee brace, I am not able make the turns necessary to compete the way I know I can," Vonn said.

Retiring in Sweden brings Vonn full circle.

She won the first two major championship medals of her career — two silvers — at the 2007 worlds in Are. Vonn has also won seven World Cup races at the Swedish resort, including two giant slaloms, and has 12 podiums overall there.

At last season's World Cup finals in Are, Vonn won the downhill and finished third in the super-G.

So broken knees and all, nobody will be counting Vonn out as a contender in her final races.

"Can't wait to see some of you in the finish in Are," she said, "where I will give it my all one last time."

  • Senator Lindsey Graham may have changed President Trump’s mind about pulling troops out of Syria.
  • “I think the president’s going to finish the job when it comes to ISIS,” Graham told reporters after meeting with President Trump Sunday.
  • Trump’s decision earlier this month to order his staff to execute the “full” and “rapid” withdrawal of US military from Syria was met with harsh criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike.

“We are in a pause situation,”  said Senator Lindsey Graham on pulling out US troops from Syria.

After a White House lunch with President Trump, Graham indicated that Trump may have changed his mind on on the highly criticized decision to pull out of Syria.

Big Bang Theory Final Season Scoop: Lindsey Kraft Cast as [Spoiler]'s Wife https://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theory-final-season-scoop-lindsey-kraft-cast-as-spoilers-wife/ https://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theory-final-season-scoop-lindsey-kraft-cast-as-spoilers-wife/#respond Tue, 18 Dec 2018 08:47:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/big-bang-theory-final-season-scoop-lindsey-kraft-cast-as-spoilers-wife/

The Big Bang Theory has married off a key recurring player — albeit off screen. TVLine has confirmed that Brian Thomas Smith is set to reprise his role as Penny’s ex hubby Zack during the second half of the CBS sitcom’s 12th and final season. And he won’t be showing up alone. The ever-ubiquitous Lindsey Kraft (Living Biblically, Grace and Frankie, Dirty John, The Conners) has been tapped to play Zack’s new bride Marissa.

Kraft is slated to appear in multiple episodes, the first of which will air Jan. 10. Here’s the episode’s spoilery logline: “Zack and his wife want a baby, but when Zack is infertile, they ask Leonard for help.”

The news comes as Big Bang approaches the midpoint of its final season. For cast member Kunal Nayyar, the harsh reality that the end is near has not yet set in. “I’m still trying to process all of it because it’s been such a big part of my life, obviously,” he recently said. “It’s given me all the blessings in the world. [But] right now, I’m just showing up on time and focused on working.”

Big Bang Theory‘s series finale is scheduled to shoot in late April and air in May.

Lindsey Graham gets his ‘thug life’ memes in afterglow of Kavanaugh saga https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/ https://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 23:08:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lindsey-graham-gets-his-thug-life-memes-in-afterglow-of-kavanaugh-saga/

Sen. Lindsey Graham didn’t mince his words defending Brett Kavanaugh as his Supreme Court nomination was debated, slamming his political opponents and smugly dismissing protesters. So ‘thug life’ memes were called for.

The videos of him interacting with protesters, or rather shrugging off protesters, have gone viral as supporters professed their love to the controversial senator from South Carolina. Some of them revived the ‘thug life’ meme of circa 2015 that glorified a cool self-image and was usually combined with depictions of White suburban stereotypes. Might be appropriate, as Republicans are gloating over the successful end to the roller coaster nomination process.

  • “Yeah, please move to South Carolina,” Graham said with a smile. “I hope you come, you’d be welcome in South Carolina.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina shrugged off a protester with a quip of his own as he walked to his car at Capitol Hill on Friday.

A female protester followed closely behind Graham’s entourage shouting, “your own white privilege patriarchy,” and threatened to vote him out of office.
