Filmmaker Doug Liman and superstar Tom Cruise have a good thing going at the moment. After making one of the most enjoyable popcorn movies in recent memory, Edge of Tomorrow, the two started working together on a few projects, including their latest film, American Made. As he did with Edge of Tomorrow, Liman focused on bringing out more of Cruise’s comedic chops with the rise-and-fall tale that’s based on a true story.
As Barry Seal, Cruise plays a happy-go-lucky, adventure-seeking pilot who doesn’t give much thought to consequences. The actor makes the character an enigmatic, empathetic, and highly-skilled goof, someone who’s easy to root for even when he’s making a lot of bad decisions. Seal has a surprising amount of charm – something Cruise can deliver in spades.
When we recently spoke with Liman, the filmmaker behind The Bourne Identity, Swingers, and Go gave us a little insight into his relationship with Cruise, his interest in Barry Seal, and the adventure and uncertainty he desires with each project. Below, check out our Doug Liman interview.
Slashfilm: I walked out of the movie just really liking Barry Seal as a character. It’s easy to see why he was beloved by some people.
Doug Liman: Yeah. People really love the real Barry Seal. Normally, when you make a movie like this, you suddenly put rose colored glasses on and you’re casting a movie star, and they’re more likable than the real person, but he was one of the largest drug smugglers in American history, and the DEA agents we spoke with loved him. Loved him. They thought he always delivered. You know, his wife never remarried. It’s obviously an extraordinary story, it’s an extraordinary time in American history, and extraordinary time just in terms of…this was a moment when pilots could be cowboys still. That era has ended. The kind of freedom the pilots had in the ’80s, just ended.
You know, I think what I really connected to with the story was Barry’s thirst for adventure. Something that Tom Cruise and I share, both in terms of adventure, making films together. It’s just kind of uncharted territory for each of us. When we first started working together on Edge of Tomorrow, before the movie’s start date everyone was under a lot of pressure and we were getting suggestions for the script that didn’t work. I remember Emily [Blunt] said in the meeting, “I’ve never made a film like this before.” I said, “I’ve never made a film like this before either.” The producer’s jaw dropped and he was like, “Oh my God, don’t let the studio hear that, they’re about to spend a hundred-plus million dollars on this movie, they don’t want to hear that you don’t know what you’re doing.”
Tom Cruise said, “No, that’s exactly why I want to make this movie. I love that Doug doesn’t know yet and he’s going to figure it out. I want to be on that adventure. He figures it out while he’s making them, you know, and he’s ready to go on that adventure.” Making American Made really was an adventure. I mean Tom and I, it was an incredibly remote location to shoot this film. To get to some of these remote locations, Tom flew the airplane and I was in the back.
We flew to an airstrip that was three hours by plane west of Bogotá. An hour and a half from the closest road. Just a dirt airstrip in the middle of the rainforest. Tom and I camped under the wing of the airplane. The soldiers you see, pointing the guns at his airplane when he flies through the rainforest? Those are real soldiers that we found, and I said, “Please don’t pull the fucking trigger. Just act like you’re going to shoot at us, but don’t.”
Even when we were to head out into the rainforest, we needed to get camping supplies, and I wanted to go. I said, “I know a thing or two about camping, I want to go to the shopping mall and pick out the camping supplies because we’ll be out there in the middle of nowhere and I don’t want to trust some production assistant.” Tom said, “Well I’ll go with you.” I was going to a shopping mall in Columbia, with Tom Cruise, to buy camping gear. By the time we were done getting our supplies, there must have been a thousand people crowded outside the store trying to get to Tom, like a zombie film all pressed up against the glass.
Tom was there with just one bodyguard, and they asked, “Is there a back way out?” “It’s a shopping mall, there is no back way out.” I turned to Tom and I said, “You know it’s going to take you at least an hour to get out of here. I’m gong to go back to the hotel.” I left him to fend for himself to get out of there.
That’s the nature of our friendship. It’s one where I can tell him he’s on his own to get out of shopping malls, and it’s one where he is doing a scene and it doesn’t work right. When you say “cut,” you want to somehow give sort of positive reinforcement. But meanwhile, you need to fix it. You’re trying to figure out how to gently nudge them without being too critical. I was trying to come up with the right words and I said, “Tom, you know that was…that was terrible.” I said, we were talking about his performance in the scene and I said, “yeah, the acting was terrible.” Tom was like, “I knew it. I knew it. Let’s go again.” We can have that kind of relationship. Then it’s really a safe place to explore, for me as a filmmaker, for him as an actor, to find the movie and find these really unique moments.
Moments that no screenwriter could have envisioned. Like the burying of the money becoming a problem was something that Tom and I discovered in the making of the film. On Edge of Tomorrow, we discovered that movie while we were making it. That’s why I love working with him so much.
Is that a process you usually gravitate towards? Discovering the movie while you’re making it?
Yeah, on some level because I want my roles to fit my actors, so it doesn’t even seem like they’re acting. I want it to fit them on that level. Part of that is exploring the role together, and sometimes as you work on characters it sends the story in a new direction. American Made, by the interactions, we didn’t anticipate in the beginning because Tom and I were really wanting to feel passionate about the love story that’s at the heart of the movie, and how unique it is. That took the film in some unexpected directions.

I’m a fan of Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman, but we’ve been writing so much about him lately that I’m almost sick of seeing the dude’s name. But when you’re one of Hollywood’s most in-demand filmmakers, “being too prolific” is likely a problem he’s happy to have.
Last year, the director was flirting with the possibility of directing a film adaptation of a forthcoming young adult novel called Unearthed, which was described as “Indiana Jones meets Tomb Rader, in space.” Now Liman is officially attached, and the project has secured a couple of writers to boot.
The Hollywood Reporter says that brothers Jez and John-Henry Butterworth have come on board to write the script. Jez worked on the James Bond film Spectre and Johnny Depp’s mob movie Black Mass, while John-Henry, who seems to be a bit newer to the writing field, co-wrote Edge of Tomorrow and the James Brown biopic Get on Up with his brother.
Unearthed is based on a novel from Amie Kauffman and Meagan Spooner, the duo behind the popular Starbound Trilogy (These Broken Stars, This Shattered World, and Their Fractured Light), and while the book was apparently once set for release this year, it will now hit shelves sometime in January of 2018. Here’s THR’s synopsis:
Set in a distant future where Earth has been undone by environmental disaster, Unearthed sees a scholar and a scavenger reluctantly team to venture to the planet of a now-extinct alien race. With the promise of a salve for Earth, the two must work together to explore an ancient alien temple and finds its life-altering secrets. But the deeper they go, the more the two discover they may not be helping their own planet but rather hastening its destruction.
Sounds a little like Prometheus, doesn’t it? Since this isn’t based on a pre-existing property and therefore doesn’t come with years of expectation attached, I can’t imagine the eventual movie will be as controversial as Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien universe.
Liman has been keeping busy. He was previously attached to direct Gambit and Justice League Dark, but ultimately bailed on both. He just released a small-scale thriller called The Wall to little fanfare last month, the first trailer for his drug trafficking drama American Made just dropped this week, he has an Edge of Tomorrow sequel in his sights, and he’s currently prepping another YA adaptation, Chaos Walking, which stars Daisy Ridley of Star Wars: The Force Awakens fame.
No word yet on a start date for Unearthed, but we’ll keep you posted about casting decisions as soon as we hear about them.

Justice League Dark has lost another high-caliber filmmaker. Liman, who also dropped out of 20th Century Fox’s Gambit, is following in Guillermo del Toro‘s footsteps and moving on from the DCEU film. Another project of his, Chaos Walking, got the green light, so a scheduling conflict arose.
Below, learn more about Liman’s vision for Justice League Dark and what’s next for him.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. is on the search for a new director and currently taking meetings. The studio, who had no comment on the story, should find a replacement “shortly.” If Liman ends up shooting Chaos Walking later this year, maybe that means Justice League Dark is the movie Warner Bros. wants to go into production before the year ends – but that’s purely speculation.
Only two weeks ago, while promoting The Wall, the Swingers and Edge of Tomorrow director was discussing his vision for Justice League Dark. He told Cinemablend they’ve “found a way to do something that’s actually really personal and small”:
It’s going to have real horror elements, for sure. I love early horror films, be it The Exorcist, or Carrie, The Omen. In the same way that Bourne Identity, I went back to the ’70s paranoia. There’s stuff to be mined from the people who have come before me that I’m planning to bring to Justice League Dark. And also the arena, my good friend Simon Kinberg, with Deadpool really pushed the arena. I’m never going to do something that’s straight forward, but I’m not going to do something campy either. I have a take on it that isn’t like anything else out there. At the end of the day, I make character-driven movies.
Liman can make character-driven movies on a large-scale, too. The Bourne Identity isn’t as massive as Edge of Tomorrow, but both are studio movies with Liman’s personality, and they are both, as the director says, driven more by character than action. An unconventional comic book with an ensemble cast probably would’ve benefited from Liman’s eye for character and spectacle.
For that reason, it’s unfortunate the director is no longer making the Scott Rudin-produced DCEU movie, but he’s got plenty coming up that we can look forward to, including a possible Edge of Tomorrow sequel. We’ll soon see another collaboration between Liman and Tom Cruise, American Made, which comes out this September. There’s no word on when he’ll start shooting Chaos Walking, but it’s confirmed to star Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.

Fox is seemingly in a constant state of tinkering with its cinematic version of the X-Men, and one of the key characters they’ve been looking to spin off into his own film has been Gambit, the Cajun mutant with the ability to imbue objects with a powerful explosive charge. The studio has experienced a number of start and stops with a Gambit solo movie over the years, and they’ve been having a hell of a time finding a director to stick to the project long enough to bring it to life.
Doug Liman, the man who directed The Bourne Identity, was once in the director’s chair for a Gambit movie, but thanks to a new interview, we now know why he ultimately walked away from it.
Liman, who left the Gambit movie when Fox removed it from the studio’s release calendar last year, spoke with We Got This Covered and explained why he bailed on the superhero film:
“I look for a personal connection to the movies I make and it may not be immediately obvious. You know, like what’s my connection to Jason Bourne? I have a deeply personal connection to that movie because it’s all about Iran-Contra and my father ran the investigations into Iran-Contra. In every story I have a personal connection. The Wall, you’d be like what could this filmmaker from New York possibly have in common with these two soldiers pinned down in Iraq? But The Wall is really about perseverance. It’s about picking yourself up and you just keep going and that’s something I have firsthand experience with. Not in war but in other aspects of life. With Gambit, I just never found that personal way in. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.”
Liman sounds like a man of principle, which is nice to hear in an industry that’s often bereft of them. We know he’ll be keeping busy with the Edge of Tomorrow sequel (which just received a truly insane title), and I think any true Gambit fan would much rather he tap out early than to create a Gambit movie that lacks the passion of a personal connection. And since the film is apparently still happening, hopefully someone else will be able to step in and do the character justice.
My introduction to Marvel characters wasn’t in the pages of comic books, but with Fox’s popular animated shows that were a staple of the Saturday morning cartoon block in the ’90s. Spider-Man: The Animated Series was a favorite, but just as formative in my early geek days was X-Men, which dealt with some pretty heavy subject matter for a kids’ series right from the start. (Remember Morph? He was killed during the two-part pilot.) Those who grew up watching that show have a special affection for the quick-witted card thrower who, from my understanding, was a far cooler character on the show than he was in the comics around that time.
The only time Gambit has ever been seen in live-action was in the dreadful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as played by Taylor Kitsch. Magic Mike star Channing Tatum remains attached to don the trench coat in the new movie, but as of right now, there’s no one to steer the ship. Fox is clearly still prioritizing X-Men movies at the studio, so here’s hoping they find the right person to direct this one and make it worth the wait. No pressure or anything.
Who would you like to see direct a Gambit movie?
