Trying to warn Brussels against rejecting UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal, Hunt shot for a one-two punch combo: virtually calling the EU a “prison” for member states, and comparing it to the Soviet Union at the same time.
“The EU was set up to protect freedom. It was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving,” Hunt told the Tory conference in Birmingham, referring to the long-standing deadlock in the UK’s negotiations with the EU over the Brexit deal.
“The lesson from history is clear: if you turn the EU club into a prison, the desire to get out won’t diminish, it will grow – and we won’t be the only prisoner that will want to escape,” he added. Hunt himself voted ‘Remain’ back in 2016, but then said he changed his mind because of the “arrogance” Brussels displayed during the Brexit negotiations that followed the referendum.
His words did not sit well with the public. Twitter exploded with critical comments as people called his parallels “disgusting” and said that Hunt should apologize to the people of Eastern Europe, who lived in countries of the then Soviet-led Warsaw Pact.
Jeremy Hunt last week: “We need to avoid revving up the situation, making it worse by appealing to audiences on social media.”
Jeremy Hunt this week: The EU is a prison like the Soviet Union.
Way to keep things cool, calm and reasonable.
— Spar4 (@Mckendrick36) September 30, 2018
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt compares EU to 'prison' of Soviet Union @rossboz @SingenRx could we use this as a starter for the Cold War? It is such a historical inaccurate comparison to make. https://t.co/R8nKMPOUgA
— Mr C (@RobChambers1991) September 30, 2018
Users denounced his remarks as “invidious” and said that was just a way to cover his own “incompetence” at the Brexit negotiations. Others argued that it is Brexit that actually left people “trapped.”
@Jeremy_Hunt Your invidious comparison of the EU & the Soviet Union is being badly received in Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, not to mention elsewhere. Showing Europe respect my arse!
— Ed Larrissy (@ELarrissy) September 30, 2018
How dare you compare the EU to a prison or the Soviet Union, @Jeremy_Hunt?! You’re just covering up your incompetence at negotiating. We, the younger generation, see ourselves as part of a greater whole, and don’t want to leave. You’re an inward-looking, feckless nationalist.

I’m already a prisoner, trapped by this insane Brexit ideology that whereby the government makes propaganda statements about the EU being like Soviet Union. We’re free to leave just not with all the cake.

Hunt, meanwhile, also warned the EU that, in case it rejects “the hand of friendship offered by our Prime Minister, you turn your back on the partnership that has given Europe more security, more freedom and more opportunities than ever in history.” That would be a “wholly avoidable tragedy for Europe,” he added.
His words come just days before another Brexit summit in Brussels. Theresa May demanded that the EU bring a new set of proposals to the table to break the “impasse” in the negotiations. Earlier, the EU rejected the Chequers plan presented by May herself. The EU Council President Donald Tusk said that it “risks undermining the single market.”
However, May is having to fight on two fronts, pushing her Brexit plan both in Brussels and within her party’s own ranks at home. Earlier on Sunday, ex-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson called May’s Chequers plan “deranged.”
Tackling the criticism of her plan on the first day of the conference, May warned her Chequers detractors to “stop playing politics” and urged Tory members to “come together” to back the Brexit plan.

Recently released Tommy Robinson claims he was ‘mentally tortured’ in prison complaining of no TV, inability to eat prison food and being moved to facility with larger Muslims population.
Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, the former leader of the English Defence League (EDL) got a 13 month sentence in May for contempt of court. On Wednesday, the defense team for the darling of the British and international right successfully appealed the sentence and he was released on bail pending a retrial.
In several prison complaint forms posted to his Facebook page on Friday, Robinson’s claims of mistreatment included being moved from a prison where only 7% of inmates were Muslim to one where a third of them are; being locked up for 23 hours a day “for his own protection,”; and accused prison authorities of “punishing” him with no TV access in his cell.
“I’d like to be given a TV as I feel I am being mentally tortured,” he wrote.
Another complaint form saw him request “extra spends” in order to buy more food as paranoia over what people preparing his meals might do to it had resulted in him losing weight as he was only able to eat canned food.
“This would make up a bit for being held in isolation,” Robinson said.
The prison service has rejected the claims, with a spokesperson saying “Mr Yaxley-Lennon was treated with the same fairness we aim to show all prisoners.”
It added that claims of being held in solitary confinement were “totally false.”
Since his release, Robinson has refused to talk to mainstream media in the UK, accusing a BBC reporter asking for comment upon his release that “all you do is lie.”
Speaking to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson on Friday, Robinson documented his mistreatment further, saying that he had to keep his windows and doors closed during the recent spell of hot weather for fear of having other prisoners spit or throw excrement into his cell.
“I was supposed to be in Her Majesty’s Prison Service, not Guantanamo Bay,” he said.

His Guantanamo Bay claim has received derision online, with British ex-Guantanamo prisoner and activist Moazzam Begg accusing Robinson of not being able to “handle a few weeks inside.”
During his Fox interview, Robinson also disclosed a never-mentioned-before Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) obtained from a previous five-month spell in solitary confinement when he was in prison in 2012.
In October 2012 Robinson was arrested for illegally entering the United States under a false passport while concealing a previous drug conviction.
After spending Christmas in jail, he was convicted and sentenced to 10 months in January 2013.
Other convictions include assault, participation in mass brawls and mortgage fraud.
Since his most recent incarceration, he has seen a swelling in support both within the UK and from the US and European political right. He has also received more than £20,000 in Bitcoin donations since he was jailed in May.

The trouble with raising the specter of an enemy is that one can very easily take it too far. Johnson has apparently been so gripped by hysterical Russophobia that he has started seeing parallels between Russia and its sworn enemy, the Third Reich.
In his latest outburst to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, he went as far as to claim that Crimea joining Russia, following an overwhelmingly supportive referendum in March 2014, was similar to the partial occupation of what was then Czechoslovakia by Hitler’s forces back in 1938. Johnson then claimed that it was “wholly apposite” to draw such comparisons between the Nazis then and Russia now.
“Russia annexed a sovereign European territory,” the foreign secretary said of Crimea. He then emphatically pointed out that “we did not do anything about the Sudetenland, you know,” referring to European leaders’ decision to allow the peripheral Czechoslovak territories to be annexed by the Nazis. Later on, using their position behind the Czechoslovak defenses, the Wehrmacht were able to enter Prague unopposed.
Johnson warned that Europe’s failure to stand up to what he called Russia’s “pattern of provocative behavior” would encourage the Kremlin in its “revanchist feeling.” He attempted to scare Europe further by claiming that a lack of action on Moscow’s “assertive” policy would be similar to the appeasement of Adolf Hitler.
As he made his far-reaching conclusions, Johnson completely neglected one fact: It was the West, namely France and the UK itself, which “sold” Czechoslovakia to Hitler by signing the 1938 Munich Agreement. Better known as the ‘Munich Betrayal’, the treaty allowed Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia.
The pact was signed by Hitler and Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini – as well as Britain’s then-Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his French counterpart Edouard Daladier. Notable by its absence was the Soviet Union, and even Czechoslovakia’s leadership did not take part in the negotiations on the agreement.
The British media has apparently fallen victim to this selective historical amnesia. The Daily Express, for example, briefly mentioned in its piece that Chamberlain merely “refused to intervene” when Hitler’s forces occupied the territory.
It is not the first time Johnson has allowed himself to make such far-fetched comparisons. On March 21, he likened Russia’s hosting of this year’s World Cup to the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany, adding that such a “comparison with 1936 is certainly right.”
This provoked an angry reaction from Moscow. The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced Johnson’s words as “totally disgusting” and “not appropriate for any foreign minister.”
Johnson is no stranger to statements that encourage a distorted view of Russia. For example, he has publically claimed that getting rid of former spies is just a part of Russian nature. In his opinion piece for the Washington Post, he called the poisoning of double agent Sergei Skripal nothing other than the manifestation of “blatant Russian-ness.”
It almost goes without saying that Johnson never bothered to provide even the slightest proof to substantiate his claims. Instead, he trumpeted the “overwhelming support” that the UK received from other western countries following the poisoning of Skripal. Johnson interpreted this as a clear sign that the whole “Western world” shares his take on Russia’s “provocative behavior.”
On March 4, Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter were found unconscious on a bench outside a shopping center in the British town of Salisbury. Police later said they had been poisoned with some sort of a Soviet-era nerve agent. London was quick to blame Moscow for the incident and its Western allies were quick to join in, even though no solid evidence of Russian involvement in the incident has been presented so far.
Russia has repeatedly denied having anything to do with the poisoning of Skripal. Moscow has offered cooperation in the probe and demanded the details be shared, as it involves Russian citizens.

Brendan Cox, the husband of a British parliamentarian who was murdered by a reported sympathizer of the British far-right group, Britain First, responded to President Donald Trump’s social-media interactions with the leader of that group Tuesday night.
“I think we probably got used to a degree of absurdity, of outrageous retweets and tweets from the president, but I think this felt like it was a different order,” Cox told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Tuesday night.
“Here he was retweeting a felon, somebody who was convicted of religiously aggravated harassment of an organization that is a hate-driven organization on the extreme fringes of the far, far right of British politics.”
“This is like the president retweeting the Ku Klux Klan,” Cox said.
Trump earlier on Tuesday shared a string of anti-Muslim videos embedded in tweets from the far-right activist Jayda Fransen. The authenticity of those videos was called into question during a White House press conference on Tuesday afternoon, but press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to acknowledge doubts about their veracity.
Cox spoke to Trump’s temperament in his interview with CNN Tuesday night: “This president has become a purveyor of hate and it’s time we all said enough is enough and we won’t tolerate that no matter what our political disagreements.”
British Prime Minister Theresa May scolded Trump over his retweets, and Trump shot back in a familiar way, using recent terror attacks in that part of the world to snap at May and the UK, one of America’s oldest and most steadfast allies.

Saturday Night Live this weekend put disgraced Hollywood exec Harvey Weinstein on blast during a fiery Weekend Update segment.
What began with commentary on Apple’s new emojis slowly but surely digressed into full-blown commentary on the alleged serial sexual harasser.
“Apple has announced that it is adding hundreds of new emojis to its iOS system, including a person at a spa, a vomiting face and a shushing finger — finally giving emoji fans the ability to describe what it was like to work with Harvey Weinstein,” WU co-anchor Colin Jost started. Remarking on Weinstein’s decision to check himself into a rehabilitation program, he said, “[Weinstein] doesn’t need sex rehab. He needs a specialized facility where there are no women, no contact with the outside world, metal bars, and it’s a prison.”
Michael Che then acknowledged that while it’s inappropriate to make jokes about sexual assault, “it’s so easy to make jokes about a guy who looks like [Weinstein]. I mean, he looks like chewed bubble gum rolled in cat hair.” (He later likened Weinstein to “a well-dressed skin tag.”)
Then, responding to Weinstein copping to his “mistakes,” Che argued, “You assaulted dozens of women. That’s not a mistake, that’s a full season of Law & Order.”
In spite of the musical within the drama, Stranger Things casualty Shannon Purser doesn’t think of her upcoming NBC series Rise as the next Glee. Rather, “I like to think of it as kind of like a Friday Night Lights with music,” she told TVLine founder Michael Ausiello on the Emmy red carpet Sunday. “It’s not like Glee in the sense that people burst into song. [When they do], it’s all within the confines of the musical that they’re putting on in high school.”
Keeping busy with the show, which was developed by Jason Katims (Parenthood) and Jeffrey Seller (Hamilton), has kept the actress from dwelling too much on the fate of her beloved Stranger Things character. It also helps that “I’ve been told that there will be justice for Barb” in Season 2, she said. In the meantime, “I’m living the dream.”

After Jodie Whittaker made history yesterday, becoming the first female regeneration to take on the role, Piers set to debating whether the character can physically be a woman.
The 56-year-old presenter started by asking Richard Arnold and Doctor Who expert, Matthew Sweet, whether Daleks can be “gender-fluid”.
Matthew added that the Doctor’s (currently played by Peter Capaldi) greatest alien enemy do appear to be genderless in their metal form, noting that they are “blobs of jelly”.
“They’re fluid in all sorts of ways. They had a gender many years ago, but now they’re blobs of organic matter,” the TV critic added.
Clearly unwilling to miss the chance for a swipe at his rival, Piers joked: “Well they really are like Lord Sugar then.”
Eager to move on, Richard Arnold added that fans of the BBC’s hit sci-fi show are divided over the appointment.
Commenting frankly, the entertainment editor suggested this was “a much needed shot in the arm for a declining show”.
Jodie, 35, was announced yesterday after Roger Federer stormed to victory against Marin Cilic at Wimbledon.
Speaking of the role, the Broadchurch star admitted: “I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet.
“It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everything I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait,” Jodie added.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
In more evidence of White House chief strategist Steve Bannon’s waning influence, an unnamed friend has compared him in a Washington Post report to “a terminally ill family member who had been moved into hospice care.”
The Post reported that Bannon is struggling to hold onto his job, and President Donald Trump himself has been publicly distancing himself from Bannon this week.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal published Wednesday, Trump seemed to dismiss Bannon, an aide and campaign confidante he has known for at least five years, describing him simply as “a guy who works for me.” And he told told the New York Post on Tuesday that he is “his own strategist” and that Bannon was not involved in his campaign “until very late.”
The Washington Post talked to 21 Trump aides on Wednesday and came away with a picture of a chief strategist who’s struggling to build good will in the White House. The newspaper also noted that Trump has been moderating some of his views, moving away from Bannon’s populist views.
The new report is the latest in a string of stories suggesting that Bannon has fallen out of favor with President Donald Trump, who is apparently unhappy with the narrative that Bannon is a puppet master who’s calling the shots in the White House. The New York Times reported that Trump told one person that Bannon is “not a team player.”
Bannon has also reportedly drawn the ire of Jared Kushner, a senior adviser to Trump and husband of his daughter Ivanka. Several reports recently have detailed the brewing conflict, with The Daily Beast reporting that fighting between the two had been nonstop for weeks and that they often clash face-to-face.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer called reports of the feud “overblown,” but the Post reported that Trump scolded staffers over the weekend over the infighting.
Still, The Times cited an unnamed source familiar with the dynamics inside the White House as saying any immediate changes to Trump’s staff are unlikely. And Bannon has reportedly told people that he thinks things have cooled off with Kushner.
