  • The UK lifted a temporarily ban on fracking amid the ongoing energy crisis.
  • It had temporarily banned fracking over fears of earthquakes from the shale-gas extraction process.
  • UK energy bills are expected to be 80% higher in October than they were a year ago.

The UK has lifted a ban on fracking, aiming to cut its reliance on energy imports as power bills soar.

"In light of Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine and weaponization of energy, strengthening our energy security is an absolute priority," UK Business and Energy Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg said in a statement on Thursday.

The UK is in a cost-of-living crisis: Annual energy bills in the country are expected to surge 80% year-on-year to an average of £3,549, or $ 5,656, from October, the country's energy regulator said in August. 

The UK is also aiming to be a net energy exporter by 2040. It's now a net importer of all main fuel types.

The UK temporarily banned fracking in 2019 due to concerns about earth tremors from the process, which breaks up rocks with water at chemicals at high pressure in order to extract shale gas. Fracking is controversial due to its impact on the environment and fears that the process may cause earthquakes. The British Geological Survey said in a Thursday report it was challenging to "predict the occurrence of larger earthquakes during hydraulic fracturing operations."

Fracking companies welcomed the lifting of the ban, but some experts raise doubts over the impact of the move on UK consumers and the size of their energy bills.

A Thursday report from the London School of Economics said it's a "false assumption" that shale gas produced at home would be priced significantly below international market prices.

It also takes time to develop an industry substantial enough to make an impact.

"Even if the risks proved to be manageable and acceptable, shale gas would only make a significant impact to UK supply if, over the next decade, thousands of successful wells were to be drilled at hundreds of sites across northern England," Professor Andrew Aplin at Durham University's earth sciences department said in a statement on Thursday.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling on Thursday was set to reinstate Russia seven medals from the 2014 Sochi Olympics, including gold in men’s skeleton and men’s 50-kilometer cross-country skiing.

The pound to euro exchange rate had a slight shift in favour of the euro currency today, Wednesday 31 January.

Pound Sterling is converted to €1.1406, in Bloomberg figures at 7:20am this morning.

This is an increase in value compared to yesterday, when the pound converted to €1.1355.

The fall on Thursday followed a government report which was leaked and suggested Brexit had a negative impact on UK growth.

However, the pound later picked up after comments from Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England.

TorFX currency analyst Laura Parsons said the pound has “pushed back”.

“The GBP/EUR exchange rate initially faltered on Tuesday in response to a leaked government report detailing the negative impact of Brexit on UK growth.

However, she said it had made a recovery: “The pairing was later able to push back above €1.140.”

“While demand for the euro was undermined by a disappointing German inflation report, the pound was lifted by bullish comments from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney.”

She added that the pound had further potential today following the Eurozone inflation reports.

If today’s Eurozone inflation report falls short, GBP/EUR could extend gains in the hours ahead.

Yesterday, Laura correctly predicted the pound would rise again today.

According to Laura, this was thanks to “a run of influential ecostats for the Eurozone.” 

She added: “Today’s German inflation numbers could help Sterling creep back towards last week’s highs if they show a decline in consumer price pressures.”

“However, the Eurozone’s growth stats are expected to be sturdy and could limit any EUR losses.”

At the beginning of the week, she said the week held “positive potential” for GBP.

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia began screening feature-length animated children’s films this weekend in a makeshift theater, after a 35-year-old ban on cinemas was lifted in the conservative Islamic kingdom.

The first permanent theaters could open as early as March, part of a liberalizing reform drive that has already opened the door to concerts, comedy shows and women drivers over the past year.

For now, the authorities are sponsoring temporary settings, like the state-run cultural hall in the Red Sea city of Jeddah equipped with a projector, a red carpet and a popcorn machine.

“Until now, there is no infrastructure for movie theaters, so we are trying to take advantage of (alternative) venues to approximate the cinematic form,” said Mamdouh Salim, whose Cinema 70 brand organized the week-long screenings.

“We tried to use these films to be a starting point as the first cinematic screening after the decision on Dec. 11 to permit movie theaters.”

Cinemas were banned in the early 1980s under pressure from Islamists as Saudi society turned towards a particularly conservative form of religion that discouraged public entertainment and public mixing between men and women.

But reforms led by 32-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have eased many of those restrictions, as the government tries to broaden the economy and lessen its dependence on oil.

In a nod to conservatives, films will be censored to make sure they remain in line with the kingdom’s “moral values”.

After watching The Emoji Movie with his wife and daughter on Sunday evening, 28-year-old Sultan al-Otaibi said Saudis are happy to see movies in the theater instead of staying at home.

“It’s more comfortable, more fun to have a change of scenery and an activity on the weekend. It is a step that was very late in coming but thank God it’s happening now.”

Thousands of Saudis currently travel to Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and other countries for entertainment. The government wants to retain the money spent on those trips.

The authorities expect to open 300 cinemas with 2,000 screens by 2030, building an industry it hopes will contribute more then 90 billion riyals ($ 24 billion) to the economy and create 30,000 permanent jobs.

Regional and international cinema chains are also eyeing the Saudi market, keen to tap the spending power of the young people who make up roughly 70 percent of the population.

“I want to see everything because it is something new for Saudi,” said 30-year-old movie-goer Ibtisam Abu Talib. “I hope everything is available – action, romance, children’s films, comedy. Everything, God willing.”

As the Saudi-led coalition continues its blockade of Yemen, civilians are being deprived of life-saving food and medicine. The UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs told RT the blockade needs to be lifted so the vulnerable can be helped.

“This blockade was put into place because of the missile attack on Riyadh, but the effect of the blockade has been to make it much more difficult to run the aid operation,” Sir Mark Lowcock told RT. “We are hopeful that the blockade will start to be lifted tomorrow, with eight flights in again to Sanaa.”

Lowcock noted that the United Nations, the Red Cross, and other organizations have made “very good progress” in bringing the cholera epidemic under control. However, he stressed that “until the food and fuel and the medicines get back in there, we won’t be able to sustain those operations in the way we have been doing.” He went on to reiterate that airports and ports need to be opened, “otherwise we will run out of supplies [on the ground] and we won’t be able to do the life-saving work we have been doing.”

Development of Mercedes-Benz’s new subcompact cars is well under way, as evidenced by its Concept A Sedan and “spy” photos from Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche of the new A-Class. With that in mind, it’s perhaps not that surprising that, thanks to these spy shots, we’re now getting a peak at the second-generation GLA-Class. What’s a bit more surprising is that the GLA seems to derive more from the A-Class hatchback’s styling than the current generation.

The current generation model, which shares a platform with the CLA sedan, and in turn, the A-Class hatch, has its own unique styling. The GLA had a belt line that kicked up at the trailing edge, unique headlights and grilles, and other subtle styling changes. This new generation looks like it will pretty much look exactly like an A-Class, but with an extra inch or two of ride height, plus the prerequisite plastic wheel arch extensions, which should transform the tiny hatch into an American-friendly crossover.

Mind you, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. This and the new A-Class are shaping up to be reasonably handsome with slimmer, wider grilles, and aggressive headlights seemingly inspired by the AMG GT line. The Concept A also indicates that the ultra-swoopy lines and complex styling will be toned down with this generation of car. The wider fender flares on this GLA prototype also add an extra layer of aggression to the hatchback’s looks, too.
