The perpetually licensed version of the desktop Office apps, branded Office 2019, was released today. It’s available as a one-time purchase for volume-licensed commercial customers. A consumer release will come in the next few weeks.

Office 2019 is supported on Windows 10—exclusively; no Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 support is available—and the three most-recent versions of macOS (that is, today’s release of 10.14, 10.13, and 10.12).

PrecisionHawk has announced a duo of acquisitions as the commercial drone company looks to build the biggest network of commercially licensed drone pilots in the U.S.

Founded out of Raleigh, North Carolina in 2010, PrecisionHawk supplies drones, software, and services for companies to put unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to use across numerous industries such as insurance and construction.

The two startups that have been bought by PrecisionHawk are Rhode Island-based Droners, a platform dedicated to helping drone operators hire licensed drone pilots specializing in aerial photography; and Ontario, Canada-based AirVid, which serves as a platform for finding all manner of drone pilots dealing in photo, video, cinematography, surveying, mapping, and more.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) passed new rules back in 2016 allowing drones to be used commercially in the U.S. Buoyed by this green light, the commercial drone market is now estimated to become a $ 127 billion industry by 2020, according to PwC, and investors are lining up to take a piece of the new wave of UAV startups. An estimated $ 454 million was thrown at UAV startups in 2016 alone, and PrecisionHawk itself has nabbed around $ 104 million in funding — $ 75 million of which came just two weeks ago.

At the time of its big raise last month, PrecisionHawk said that “strategic acquisitions” would be one of the avenues it would pursue as part of its growth, and it hasn’t hung around. These latest transactions represent PrecisionHawk’s second and third known acquisitions, after it snapped up aerial imagery company Terraserver in 2015.

Drones need pilots (but maybe not for long), which is why PrecisionHawk wants to create a wide-reaching network of licensed drone pilots which companies can call upon to not only maneuver the drones, but capture imagery as required by the client.

The company said that it plans to merge both companies under the “Droners” brand to form an immediate network of 15,000 drone pilots, which will be used not only as a channel for connecting drone pilots with companies directly, but will also serve PrecisionHawk’s own enterprise client base. Droners founder Dave Brown will head up the new PrecisionHawk pilot network development team, while AirVid founder Patrick Egan will stay on as a consultant and assist with integrating the respective platforms.

“Droners and AirVid share our mission of helping drone operators turn their passion into a profession,” noted PrecisionHawk CEO Michael Chasen. “Combined with PrecisionHawk’s expertise in providing professional drone services to the enterprise, this merger enables us to build the best platform for drone pilots while simultaneously providing our enterprise clients with the on-demand services they require.”

Compare the release schedule of 2017 to that of 2007 and one of the biggest differences you’d see is the almost complete disappearance of licensed games for kids. Where once movies and TV shows would see average (at best) cash-ins released on PlayStation and Xbox, today they land on mobile, and are even worse. But there are exceptions.

With Cars 3 inexplicably out in cinemas soon, there’s a Cars 3 game coming to every home console, from the Wii U through to the PlayStation 4.

Does it look like something you, Kotaku reader, would pick up? Probably not. But of interest is that it’s being made by Avalanche Studios, the team behind Disney Infinity, who since that title’s sad demise have been bought by Warner Bros. and re-opened to churn this out.

Infinity featured a not-terrible car racing mode (albeit one that was greatly enhanced by assistance from OutRun’s Sumo Digital, so hopefully those improvements have stuck). So for a kid’s game, it could have worse pedigree.

The biggest video game news out of the weekend’s Star Wars Celebration is the upcoming Battlefront II, which builds on the first by adding a story mode to its multiplayer Stormtrooper-blasting fun.

But hidden in all the excitement about this reveal is that Criterion, which worked on Battlefront’s PSVR mission, is also working on the PlayStation 4 version of EA’s first-person shooter.

Star Wars feels like an ideal fit for VR — especially if you put players in the cockpit of starfighters like the Rebel’s X-wing or the Imperial TIE fighter. The first PSVR mission, though, felt more like an experiment, not a fleshed-out experience. It’ll be interesting to see how Criterion handles this second stab at Star Wars in VR.

But this also shows two key components to sustaining a VR platform — key exclusives and big properties. One reason Nintendo can sustain itself is that its biggest properties are on its platforms, and those exclusives still sell well even if Nintendo’s consoles are far behind the player base we see for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Heck, Super Mario Run got mammoth downloads when it was an iOS exclusive, showing the thirst for Nintendo properties on mobile.

Will a new Star Wars VR experience lead to more sales of PSVR helmets? If Criterion can hone in on what makes Star Wars so special and find a way to distill it into VR, it could help Sony be the top platform for the shooter this fall.

Snapchat adds world lenses to further its push into augmented reality

Snapchat today is rolling out world lenses, a new twist on its popular face filters that continues the company’s exploration of augmented reality.
