Licence fee payers were previously unimpressed with the festive offerings when the schedule was released a few weeks prior. Taking to Twitter, one licence fee payer wrote: “What an absolute joke the BBC used to be the channel to watch at Christmas. Not anymore. “Why on earth do we have to pay an extortionate license fee for this pile of rubbish. I could think of better programming in my sleep scrap the license fee,” they continued. Another added: “Worst Christmas TV scheduling I have ever seen. First, The Goes Wrong Show has been overlooked again. That should be on Christmas Eve. “Then you stick a clip show on Christmas Day (stupid idea). And Boxing Day has absolutely nothing!” they posted. Commenting on the Christmas special, licence fee payers took to social media as one wrote on Twitter: “Just caught up on last nights #MrsBrownsBoys and I don’t mean to be rude it wasn’t the best episode.. I love the show just last night, it just wasn’t the show’s best episode sadly.” Another added: “#Mrsbrownsboys am I the only person who can’t stand this ghastly show?” A third remarked: “I never watched #MrsBrownsBoys because it has run its course and it’s beyond me why the BBC has commissioned it for another five years. God help their ratings.” Not everyone was so outraged, as a fourth commented: “@MrsBrownsBoys Really enjoyed last night’s Christmas show. “Just what we all needed lots of laughter. It said one of two on the episode [so] is there a second episode on at all over Christmas? #mrsbrownsboys,” they asked, with a New Year’s Day episode scheduled for the coming week. Mrs Brown’s Boys airs New Year’s Day at 10pm on BBC One. BBC viewers have been tuning in for the past nine years to watch the life and times of Mrs Agnes Brown (played by Brendan O’Carroll) and her ever chaotic family. The sitcom is filmed in front of a studio audience and several of the episodes see the actors break out of character as they stumble on their lines. Following the end of season three in 2013, the show has been airing Christmas specials instead of a full series. This restricted the programme’s coverage significantly but festive episodes will be on the schedule for the foreseeable and licence fee payers seem to think the show has had its day on the network. The show has signed a new contract with the broadcasting giant, meaning it will be on air until at least 2026 and the Christmas specials will be getting the 10pm time slot. Creator and leading star Brendan, 65, explained his thoughts on the news the show would be sticking around for a little while longer. “We’ve been doing it for nine years already – which is six more than The Royle Family had and more than Morecambe and Wise,” he said. Referring to the specific details of the deal, including what time the specials will air, he told The Irish Sun: “I wanted that because if it’s not good enough for Christmas Day, then we shouldn’t be making it.” Although the cast members might be happy with the news, BBC licence fee payers were not as they have grown tired of the sitcom. READ MORE: Minister suggests BBC licence fee could be scrapped Taking to Twitter, one outraged social media user wrote: “I’ll tell you what’s not entertaining…and I’m raging…Mrs Browns Boys has been signed up by the @bbc for Christmas specials until 2026.” Another added: “I will vote for whichever party makes it policy to cancel #MrsBrownsBoys before 2026 in the next general election.” Whilst a third commented: “So we’re stuck with #MrsBrownsBoys until at least 2026… haven’t we all suffered enough this year.” “The BBC signing up Mrs Browns Boys till 2026 just sums up 2020,” a fourth posted whilst a fifth shared: “I watched one episode of #MrsBrownsBoys and each to their own but it was awful. Paying a licence fee to help keep this lot in work until 2026 is abhorrent.” This year, there will be two festive offerings from the Irish matriarch and her chaotic family as they try to get into the yuletide spirit. The Christmas Day episode will see Agnes enter a competition to deliver an alternative message to The Queen’s Speech. Then on New Year’s Day, viewers will watch as Mrs Brown’s lifelong friend Winnie McGoogan’s (Eilish O’Carroll) house is robbed. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the cast and production crew were able to film the episodes with safety measures in place. The episodes were filmed at BBC Scotland in October; the location where the previous instalments of the series had been shot. Brendan had to fly over from America to film the festive instalments as he and his wife Jennifer Gibney, 56, live in Florida. Cast and crew were tested on a daily basis for COVID-19 but as some members of the show are family in real life, viewers won’t see a great deal of social distancing. There will be nods to the global health crisis in the episodes to replicate the situations families across the nation will be facing this festive season. Mrs Brown’s Boys airs Christmas Day at 10pm on BBC One. Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford welcomed Matthew Wright and Ivy for the This Morning View segment. The BBC licence fee was one of the topics up for discussion but Eamonn had to step in when Ivy slammed the broadcaster for scrapping free licenses for over 75s and swore live on TV. During a discussion on TV licence scams, Ivy argued the elderly are afraid when they receive warning letters and are not aware these are scams. Eamonn began: “Ivy we were talking about the TV licence fee and your standing resolute on that. “I would stand beside you in this gross act of immorality, buck passing by the BBC. “But now it appears fraudsters are getting in on the act. A lot of over 75s are receiving scam letters and trying to get them signed up to paying their licence.” Read more: GMB viewers slam Kate Garraway and Adil Ray’s interview style “‘No, you’re going to have to pay for that. That’s the immorality of it.” “It’s pure cr*p,” Ivy said as Eamonn remarked: “I couldn’t have put it better myself.” “Why are we paying for Gary Lineker to sit on his backside and get paid £2 million for talking football with a couple of his pals,” Ivy continued. “No chance, I’m not doing that.” The BBC correspondent joined Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain today and was probed over the corporation’s decision to cancel the free TV licence fee for over 75s. The 70-year-old clarified not all over-75s would lose their free TV licence however, due to confusion surrounding the requirements to have obtain one, not all of those entitled had claimed it. Piers began: “A lot of anger as the BBC entered into a deal with the Conservatives and took on free licence fee.” “The BBC took it on but only until the end of a particular period and then it was up to the BBC to decide what to do,” Andrew clarified. “I know plenty of well off 75-year-old’s. Should they get a free TV licence?” Piers hit back: “But there are lots of very poor 75-year-olds.” “But most of them will still get it,” Andrew explained. But Piers wasn’t impressed as he told the presenter: “Most of them don’t claim it.” Andrew continued: “Then there should be a campaign, and perhaps the BBC should be a part of that, to encourage them to do so. “I mean, the government played a slight of hand here, they basically dumped social policy onto the BBC.” “I think that’s partly because they’ve been misled into thinking they’re going to lose their free licence,” Andrew replied. “They’re the ones that won’t lose their free licence, nor should they lose it.” Also in the interview, Andrew gave his opinion on Brexit developments saying he was “deeply depressed”. “I’m depressed by the approached of by both Remain and Leave,” he said. “Both involved running down our country.” He added: “Despite the deep tribal differences, in or out of the EU, this is still a great country. The BBC have today announced their 2019 salary list which shows the top earners at the corporation. Gary Lineker tops the list with a whopping £1.75million wage, which hasn’t changed since last year. However, there has undoubtedly been a rise in payment out to some stars. BBC director general Tony Hall confirmed the total talent bill had risen by £10million, however, he argued that it was a smaller proportion of total programming costs. He wrote in a blog: “They would earn significantly more elsewhere – and recent departures to commercial rivals show this argument isn’t hollow. “The simple truth is we have spent more than ever on content, but the amount we have spent proportionally on talent has come down. “But more importantly, whenever we ask the public whether they want big stars on the BBC they say yes. They say yes because they are talented and entertaining. They also say yes as it means they are getting big value from the BBC.” Furthermore, stars including Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys and Steve Wright have all taken pay cuts. Despite this, there are plenty of stars who have found their fortunes increase over the past year, including Zoe Ball and Sara Cox. The salary list comes just weeks after the BBC confirmed it would be dropping free licence fees for the over-75s. At the time, they said it was needed to ensure they didn’t compromise on output, with Hall adding: “This has not been an easy decision. Whilst we know that pensioner incomes have improved since 2000, we also know that for some the TV license is a lot of money. READ MORE: TV licence fee: Everything the BBC would lose if it paid for over-75 TV licenses “I believe we have reached the fairest judgement after weighing up all the different arguments. It would not be right simply to abolish all free licences. Equally it would not be right to maintain it in perpetuity given the very profound impact that would have on many BBC services.” At the time, the move caused considerable controversy across the country, with the likes of Piers Morgan calling for the plan to be scrapped. Today, people have flocked to Twitter to comment on their feelings for the BBC’s pay rises considering the recent cuts. One shared: “The BBC publicly demonstrates that it overpays all of its ‘Top Earners’ equally. I’m sure all of the over-75s think they’re worth every penny.” Another added: “HOW CAN THE @bbc DEFEND ONE MILLION POUND WAGE PACKETS with plans to scrap free TV licences for over-75s.” WATCH: Moment BBC presenter Jeremy Vine offers to pay pensioner’s BBC TV licence for life “An increase in salaries while the @BBC wants to make over 75s pay for a TV Licence. Typical public service Gravy Train,” said a third. Elsewhere on the list, women broke into the top ten for the first time. Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman bagged £370,000 and was eighth on the list of the top 10 earners. She was joined by Zoe Ball, who earned the exact same figure while Vanessa Feltz came 10th, with £355,000 for her efforts on BBC Radio 2. The likes of Jo Whiley, Gabby Logan and Lauren Laverne have also seen their pay increase dramatically. Piers Morgan accused the BBC of “total cowardice” during a debate on the axing of free TV licences for over-75s. The TV host labelled the ban “ironic”, claiming if pensioners did go to prison, they would “get television for free”. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Piers pointed out: “The irony being, if they did go to prison, they’d get television for free. I mean what has it come to?” Later in the show, Piers argued: “It’s just total cowardice. Where are you the BBC? “Seriously, your job is not to hide in your bunker when you unleash these bombs. “When you say to 3.7million pensioners ‘you’re now going to pay for your licence fee’. Your job is to come and defend them.” A pensioner, Maureen Sales, also appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the BBC controversy. She told Piers: “I lost my husband in an accident 22 years ago on our wedding anniversary, couldn’t have been a worse day at all, if at all. “What’s happened to his pension? That’s what I’m asking. All his life he’d worked.” On how important television is to her life, Ms Sales commented: “Well it is my life, it’s my family. I plan my day by my magazine every week and I sit and ring off everything I want to see and am going to see. Without that, I’ve got nothing. I live in the country very much so, very beautiful side of Sussex.” The BBC has come under fire after announcing that, from June 2020, the concession will be available only to households where someone receives Pension Credit. Only around 1.5 million households will be eligible for a free TV licence under the new scheme. As part of the charter agreement which came into effect in 2017, the BBC would take on the burden of paying for free licences by June 2020. From that date, following a review by the broadcaster, only households with someone over the age of 75 who receives Pension Credit will be eligible for a free TV licence funded by the BBC. It is thought that around 3.7 million pensioners will lose out. The new scheme will cost the BBC around £250 million by 2021/22, depending on the take-up. Ex-Commons leader Andrea Leadsom told the Press Association: “I think that’s unacceptable. It’s a commitment in the Conservatives’ manifesto and we need to find a way to reverse that.” Former Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey said she will back a campaign by ITV’s Good Morning Britain asking the BBC to reverse its decision. She wrote on Twitter: “As someone who used to work for the BBC I am ashamed of them for this decision. “Our ‘public service broadcaster’ who has forgotten the public they are supposed to serve. Agree with @RuthDavidsonMSP & @GMB campaign.” Labour has launched a campaign to restore free TV licences for all over-75s, describing the move as “an act of cruelty”. Leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote on Twitter: “Pensioners have spent their lives contributing to our society. Providing over-75s with free TV licences is not too much to ask. Sign the petition if you agree.” Nearly 300,000 people have signed an Age UK petition opposing the move, at the time of writing. A similar petition on the UK Parliament website received upwards of 12,000 signatures while more than 50,000 also called for the licence fee to be abolished altogether, claiming the bill was “far too expensive for ordinary people”. The free licence fee was first paid for by a Labour government in 2000. Under the Conservatives in 2015, ministers announced that an agreement had been reached between the Government and the BBC, and the broadcaster would shoulder the cost.
The new rule (LR56) comes into effect from January 1 after Racing NSW were initially reluctant about it due to possible integrity issues.
Racing NSW CEO Peter V’landys said without Payne’s fight and determination the rule change may not have come into effect.
“Racing NSW considers the integrity of thoroughbred racing to be paramount at all times and must be always the first factor satisfied before any change,” V’landys said.
“Accordingly, the board of Racing NSW received a report which provided confidence that any integrity concerns previously raised, had been addressed by the introduction of LR56.
“Racing NSW received submissions from several interstate dual licence holders, led by Michelle Payne, who explained the benefits of allowing dual licenses.
“Racing NSW determined that by allowing jockeys to transition into a training career while continuing to compete as a jockey, will provide a sustainable business model for these riders and allow them to continue to have a career within the racing industry.”
There are some fine print points that say a person can’t hold a dual license for more than five years to encourage them to make a full transition into training.
The dual license holder also can’t train more than five horses but must ride more than 24 times a season.
The dual license holder also cannot ride in a race if they have more than one horse in it.
Meanwhile, the ATC also had its own announcement on Tuesday regarding the Sydney Cup in the autumn.
Connections of horses that run first, second and third in The Metropolitan, Perth Cup, Auckland Cup, Adelaide Cup and Manion Cup will receive a bonuses if their horses win or place in the Sydney Cup.
Owners will get an extra $ 100,000 and trainers $ 50,000.
ATC chairman Matthew McGrath said the bonuses aimed to attract bigger fields for the staying event.
“In recent years we have significantly increased prizemoney for the Schweppes Sydney Cup and this bonus system is further recognition of our focus on providing more incentives for stayers and their connections,” McGrath said.
Saturday racing this weekend returns to Warwick Farm with the highlight of the card being the December Handicap.
