Video offering panoramic and aerial views of Aleppo has been released by the Syrian ministry of tourism in an apparent attempt to say that the country’s historic pearl is finally ready to receive visitors.

The pitch comes almost two years after the Syrian army defeated jihadist rebel groups besieging the city in a series of fierce battles. The fighting damaged many of Aleppo’s historical buildings and much of its industrial infrastructure. The government video shows the destroyed buildings being repaired or rebuilt, while heavy trucks carry away stones and rubble.

A RT crew recently visited the city, filming how the key infrastructure is being slowly rebuilt from ruins. Locals even told an RT reporter they can finally live peacefully like in the “good old days.”

Militants seeking to overthrow the Syrian government seized parts of Aleppo in 2012. Syrian government forces held on to the old city despite the blockade. The fortunes of war changed in late 2015, when Russia sent an expeditionary force into Syria at the request of Damascus. Syrian government forces and allied militias finally ousted the rebels from Aleppo in December 2016, although the city is still in range of the militants’ artillery and suffers an occasional attack.

Life in the liberated city is still full of fears, hopelessness and grief, RT’s Ruptly agency revealed.

It’s been a year since the US-backed Iraqi forces defeated Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in the city of Mosul that had become their de-facto capital. Baghdad has declared a major victory in the war that gripped the country for several years in a row. On the back of the liberation, disturbing reports began emerging, telling of all-out destruction, extrajudicial killings and a looming humanitarian crisis. A new report from the ground now reveals that, since then, things haven’t improved a lot.

A Ruptly crew went to the city to talk to local people who went through enormous hardships while living in war-torn Mosul. A man named Mohammed Qadir told the crew a harrowing story of his small daughter being killed in the bombings in April last year. The girl was hiding in the toilet with her little sister when a bomb struck the man’s house.

“You know when a mortar falls you hear the sound, it’s loud. When this [projectile] fell we didn’t hear it even though it was right here. This is where it happened.” Shrapnel severely mutilated the girl, but the nearby doctors refused to save her.

“They said: ‘We are not going to treat her. Our priority is the fighters. We can give her an injection so she dies immediately. Better for her to die at home.’”

As locals struggle to get their lives back to normal, decomposing corpses continue to lie under the rubble. “Yes, there are two bodies still down there. And there are four more bodies in that house behind us,” Qadir said before adding: “The stench coming from them is very strong. Our children are getting sick because of this.”

Meanwhile, Iraqi commanders warn that IS fighters may still be holing up around Mosul and the rest of the country. “No, we cannot say for sure that it is 100 percent [that IS has been eliminated]. … Still, there are few IS sleeper cells hiding in places such as the desert, the jungles, in islands of the Tigris River, and some hiding amongst civilians,” Major General Najmi Al-Juhuri told Ruptly. “We receive tens of phone calls on a daily basis, with people leading us to sleeper cells or guiding us to IS elements appearing anywhere,” he added.

Aid agencies, for their part, are sounding the alarm about the dire state of affairs in Mosul. “It is unfair to say nothing has changed there, but what call for is that the chance should go quicker,” Benoit de Gryse, operations manager with Medecines Sans Frontieres (MSF), told RT.

“We see that the level of destruction that happened a year ago is still visible, even infrastructure hasn’t been repaired yet, hospitals haven’t been reopened yet, there’s a lack of water,” he warned.

At least 2,521 civilians were killed and 1,673 wounded during the nine month Mosul operation, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said in November 2017, said last year, adding that the figures should be considered an “absolute minimum.”

However, National Public Radio (NPR) said that its investigation revealed that the Mosul morgue had issued 4,865 death certificates during the battle, while AP estimated the civilian death toll between 9,000 and 11,000 people.

‘You can smell the bodies’: Angelina Jolie in Mosul one year after ‘liberation’ by US-led coalition https://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/ https://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/#respond Sun, 17 Jun 2018 01:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-can-smell-the-bodies-angelina-jolie-in-mosul-one-year-after-liberation-by-us-led-coalition/ Nearly a year after Mosul in Iraq was declared “liberated” from ISIS terrorists, UNHCR envoy Angelina Jolie said the stench of dead bodies buried under the rubble was still present, amid the “worst devastation” she has ever seen.

“There are bodies in this rubble that stay here and you can smell the bodies and some of them have family members that are here and they are unable to move them,” the Hollywood superstar and Special Envoy for the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said, after exploring a part of Mosul that was recaptured last year with the US-led coalition’s active support.

Even though this was Jolie’s fifth trip to Iraq, the horrific destruction she witnessed in the Old City this time really broke her heart. Walking around the narrow streets of the city center, completely destroyed by artillery and airstrikes, the 43-year-old Oscar winner called it the “worst devastation” she saw in her 17 years representing the UNHCR across the globe.

“This is the worst devastation I have seen in all my years with UNHCR. These people have lost everything and the trauma and the loss they have suffered is unparalleled,” Jolie said.

Ever since Mosul was recaptured following massive bombardment and intensive street-to-street battles to drive out Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists, locals are not receiving any aid to rebuild the city. Unexploded mortars and other explosives still litter the streets of the Old City, while people lack basic medical facilities and infrastructure. Conditions witnessed by the actress in West Mosul are simply “appalling.”

“Displacement is still happening. The camps near the city are still full. Whole areas of West Mosul remain flattened. Enabling people to return and stabilizing the city is essential for the future stability of Iraq and the region,” she said, in a statement.

After Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared the city liberated in July, 2017, the government has done little, and received even less support from its allies, to reconstruct the once-thriving city, Iraq’s second largest. An estimated 90 percent of West Mosul, where the historical part of town is located, was destroyed or significantly damaged during the nine-month siege by Iraqi forces, supported by the US-led coalition. It will now cost Baghdad an estimated $ 88 billion to rebuild the country following the devastating battle against IS, money which the government simply lacks, and Western partners are reluctant to provide.

“I call on the international community not to forget Mosul, and not to turn their attention away from its people. We have learnt in Iraq before and elsewhere in the region the dangers of leaving a void. It is also what the families and survivors deserve,” Jolie said.

All of them have received non-life threatening wounds, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The incident occurred when reporters were about to return from the Syrian town of Douma, the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. NTV broadcaster correspondent Aleksey Ivliyev, Rossiya 1 cameraman Mikhail Vitkin and Zvezda TV cameraman Vladislav Dodonov received non-life threatening leg wounds during the attack.

“All injured journalists immediately received necessary on-site medical assistance by medics from the Russian Center for Syrian reconciliation. Their lives are not in danger,” the ministry said in a statement. The journalists have been evacuated to a hospital to receive further treatment, the ministry added. One of the injured journalists, NTV’s Ivliyev has already contacted his channel, confirming the events.

REN TV’s correspondent Valentin Trushin has provided his account of the incident. The skirmish was prompted by flags put up by the group the journalists arrived with.

“The civilians were fraternizing with the servicemen, taking photos, everything was fine…” Trushin told the channel. “We’ve boarded the bus – and then shooting erupted. Turns out they’ve fired into the air. The militants swarmed the area and tried to disperse the civilians and take down the flags. A flag was torn down. Civilians pelted the militants with stones and then one of them got hit. The militant then fired erratically and hits our bus.”

The journalists were spared from sustaining more serious injuries because they promptly got on the floor of the bus when the shooting began, Trushin said, adding that the bus was “packed.”

The town of Douma remains the last militant-held stronghold in the eastern Ghouta area. The militants, mainly from the Jaysh al-Islam group are being evacuated from the town, following the agreement brokered by the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria.

Douma came into the media spotlight over the past few days, following the alleged chemical incident reported on Saturday. Pro-militant sources, namely the controversial White Helmets group, claimed that a chlorine-filled munition struck the area, affecting dozens of civilians. The site of the purported attack has since been surrendered by the militants and explored by Russian military specialists, who found no signs of chemical attack or its victims.

The alleged incident, despite lacking any solid facts, has been taken at face value by the US and some other Western countries, who pinned the blame for it on Damascus and Moscow, and they have threatened to attack Syria. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump vowed to launch “nice and new and ‘smart’” missiles on Syria and told Russia to “get ready” for it. Moscow has earlier stated it would shoot down any incoming munitions and target the launch sites.

Is fractured Libya finally ‘ready for democracy’ almost 7yrs since NATO ‘liberation’? (DEBATE) https://briefnews.eu/is-fractured-libya-finally-ready-for-democracy-almost-7yrs-since-nato-liberation-debate/ https://briefnews.eu/is-fractured-libya-finally-ready-for-democracy-almost-7yrs-since-nato-liberation-debate/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 04:46:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-fractured-libya-finally-ready-for-democracy-almost-7yrs-since-nato-liberation-debate/ Almost 7 years since NATO’s intervention left Libya in shambles, the country’s military strongman says it is still “not yet ready for democracy.” RT’s guests debate whether the UN-backed elections could help unite Libyans.

It took a multi-state NATO coalition seven months to bomb out Libya and topple Muammar Gaddafi after the United Nations Security Council authorized a ‘no-fly zone’ over the country in March, 2011. A power vacuum left after Gaddafi’s murder is still unfilled, with two governments, one in Tobruk and another in Tripoli, and the Libyan National Army led by general Khalifa Haftar, sharing control over the fractured country.

While the UN, which backs the Tripoli-based government of National Accord of Fayez Al-Sirraj, pushes for nationwide elections to be held in the first half of this year, Haftar, who is thought to control roughly half of the country’s territory, says if they fail he will seize power by force to curb violence and restore order.

Abayomi Azikiwe, editor of the Pan-African News Wire, believes the latest UN crusade to bring democracy to the country, wracked with internal problems and torn by different military factions, will prove futile until the UN itself and the countries involved in the military intervention in Libya assume their share of responsibility for the plight they inflicted on Libyans.

“Until those who are culpable for the destruction and the destabilization in Libya and in surrounding countries come to grips with that, there’s not going to be any real solution to the crisis inside the country,” Azikiwe said, noting that up to 100,000 people were killed in the conflict and some two million displaced. Libya has turned into “a source of destabilization” in Africa and “across the Mediterranean into Europe,” he added.

The very attempt by the UN to “reconstruct a political dispensation in Libya” is “ironic,” he said, given it was “very much involved in providing a pseudo legal rationale for the destruction that has been carried out in the country over the last six years.”

Oliver Miles, former UK Ambassador to Libya, agreed it is going to be “very difficult to see Libya as anything but a state of anarchy.” However, he noted that the heavy price paid by Libya – once the wealthiest country on the African continent – to get rid of authoritarian rule was completely warranted.

When asked whether the so far unfulfilled hope for democracy was worth the chaos into which Libya has descended since Gaddafi’s demise, Miles replied: “Yes, it was,” arguing “the alternative would have been to let Gaddafi commit an act of genocide against his own people.”

According to Azikiwe, it is the Western coalition that dropped “ten thousand bombs” on Libya which is to be blamed for the “real genocide” of the Libyan population, not Gaddafi. “The notion that the previous government was going to engage in atrocities is unsubstantiated,” he stressed.

The journalist believes it is “an open question” whether Libya is ready for the elections. In any case, it will be “very difficult” for the UN to help remake what it allowed to destroy. Azikiwe went to point out that the mere fact the Tripoli government receives backing from the UN does not mean it enjoys the same support from the people.

“The United Nations has attempted to set up a government of National Accord and is not even recognized by the majority of people in Libya themselves,” he said.

While Miles told RT he has “no reason to doubt that [Libyan people] want something like a democratic state,” he also believes that under the present circumstance the UN-sponsored elections will not likely serve the goal of uniting Libyans, but rather will lead to even more instability.

“The danger is that if election were held today or without preparation, the result would be that instead of Libya having two assemblies and three governments, which is the position of the moment, it will have three assemblies and four governments,” he said. “Nobody wants that.”

City of the dead: Mosul death toll continues to grow months after liberation (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/city-of-the-dead-mosul-death-toll-continues-to-grow-months-after-liberation-video/ https://briefnews.eu/city-of-the-dead-mosul-death-toll-continues-to-grow-months-after-liberation-video/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 06:03:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/city-of-the-dead-mosul-death-toll-continues-to-grow-months-after-liberation-video/

The liberation of Mosul from ISIS came at a high cost, with the death toll continuing to rise as piles of civilian and terrorist corpses are pulled from the rubble daily, RT has discovered on a visit to the destroyed city.

Mosul still reeks of death nearly six months after Iraqi forces aided US-led air strikes “liberated” the city from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in July. The source of the city-wide stench are bodies that are rotting under the rubble, RT’s Murad Gazdiev said.

Almost entirely obliterated as a result of eight months of continued air raids, the true magnitude of the disaster in Mosul has yet to be fully realized. Up to 11,000 people perished during the campaign to drive IS out of the city – a third of whom are estimated to have been killed by US-led coalition and Iraqi airstrikes, the findings of a latest AP investigation said. Local doctors, however, say the death toll is significantly higher.

A senior health official in the destroyed city showed the RT crew a book containing some of the casualty tallies. “This book alone contains 7000 dead bodies. I have four or five of these,” said the officer who refused to speak on camera. “Every day we got 2 or 3 more bodies – victims of new explosions.”

“These could be from anything: An ISIS booby-trap. An unexploded Iraqi shell. Or a bomb dropped by the US-led coalition during the battle months ago,” he added.

Visibly exhausted search teams, meanwhile, continue to dig through destroyed buildings looking for corpses. “They cleared away the bodies of civilians that they could see. But they haven’t been able to reach those under collapsed houses,” one of the rescuers told Gazdiev. “Three or four our neighbouring families came here thinking the area was clear – but there were very heavy air strikes. They’re now buried here,” another volunteer pointed.

US disputes Pakistan story of American hostage’s liberation from Taliban-linked group https://briefnews.eu/us-disputes-pakistan-story-of-american-hostages-liberation-from-taliban-linked-group/ https://briefnews.eu/us-disputes-pakistan-story-of-american-hostages-liberation-from-taliban-linked-group/#respond Fri, 13 Oct 2017 02:22:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-disputes-pakistan-story-of-american-hostages-liberation-from-taliban-linked-group/ An American woman and her Canadian husband, along with their children, have been freed by Pakistani forces after five years of being held by the Taliban-linked Haqqani network. But conflicting stories have emerged as to how the rescue went down.

Caitlan Coleman and Joshua Boyle were freed on Wednesday by Pakistani forces. The Pakistani government claims the family was rescued in a hostile takeover, while the US rejects those claims.

Coleman and Boyle are currently in Pakistan awaiting transportation out of the country. So far Boyle has declined to board any aircraft, despite the family being offered a US-sanctioned plane on Thursday, unnamed American officials told NBC News.

The couple and their children, who were born in captivity, were with workers at the US embassy in Pakistan when Boyle refused to board the plane, according to another unnamed US official, NBC News reported.

The Pakistani military stated it had been alerted by US officials that the family was being moved by the Haqqani network across the border from Afghanistan to Pakistan. It said that was the stage at which Pakistani intelligence and infantry personnel surrounded the vehicle, according to NBC News.

“The vehicle was immobilized with sharp shooting. We destroyed their tires. The hostages remained inside the vehicle. The driver, and an accomplice, managed to escape to a nearby refugee camp. There is a search operation underway for them right now,” a spokesman for the Pakistani military, Major General Asif Ghafoor, told NBC News.

“We moved the hostages via helicopter to Islamabad. They were then handed over to US authorities.”

Ghafoor also said that the kidnappers driving the vehicle fled the scene on foot after the confrontation, the Wall Street Journal reported.

US officials, however, deny there was a hostile confrontation leading to the release of the family. One unnamed official said the family’s release was more of a diplomatic handover situation, according to NBC News.

“The United States government, working in conjunction with the government of Pakistan, secured the release of the Boyle-Coleman family from captivity in Pakistan,” President Donald Trump said on Thursday.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly commented on the rescue at a news conference on Thursday and said that Pakistan rescued the family from “forces of evil,” adding, “They’ve been essentially living in a hole for five years.”

Lyn Coleman, Caitlan’s mother, described the moment she found out her daughter had been released from her kidnappers.

“The US government called us Wednesday afternoon,” she said, the Guardian reported. “They told me to sit down and then they told me what had happened. All they told me was that they were in ‘friendly hands’.”

However, Boyle’s parents, Linda and Patrick Boyle, said their son told them he and his family had been caught in the middle of a shootout before the rescue, seemingly backing up the Pakistani government’s side of the story.

Boyle called his parents early on Thursday morning to notify them of his safety, according to the Toronto Star. He told them he was in the trunk of his kidnappers’ car with his wife and children when a firefight broke out between Pakistani forces and the kidnappers.

During the shootout, Boyle told his relatives that the last words he heard before the incident ended, were his kidnappers shouting “kill the hostages,” according to the Daily Mail.

The kidnappers were killed, while Boyle was left with minor shrapnel wounds, the Star reported.

The Boyles said their son did not like the idea of going to the American airbase in Bagram, Afghanistan, to board a plane home. Instead, he wanted to fly out from the Canadian High Commission in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, the Star reported.

The parents also addressed the Canadian citizen’s reluctance to take the US plane out of the Middle East. They said Boyle fears he will face recriminations for his past marriage to Canadian citizen Zaynab Khadr, who is the older sister of former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Omar Khadr.

Khadr spent eight years in Guantanamo Bay from 2002 to 2010 for war crimes against the US he denies he committed.

It is unclear whether or not the family’s kidnapping occurred because of Boyle’s history with Khadr, but unnamed military sources say Boyle was previously questioned in Canada over his ties to Khadr’s family, the Daily Mail reported.

Coleman and Boyle are reportedly traumatized from their time as prisoners of the Haqqani network. However, they are physically healthy and recovering from the situation.

“Josh said he was doing pretty well for someone who has spent the last five years in an underground prison,” Patrick Boyle said early on Thursday, according to the Star.

Coleman and Boyle embarked on what was to be a six-month journey through Central Asia in 2012, but the trip ended in their eventual kidnapping in Afghanistan by the Haqqani network. Coleman was pregnant with the couple’s first child at the time of their capture.

SDF militants, supported by the US-led coalition, launched the offensive in Raqqa province in November last year. In June, the fighting progressed towards the Islamic State-besieged city, the de facto capital of the self-proclaimed terrorist caliphate.

According to UN estimates made public Wednesday, around 25,000 civilians are still trapped in Raqqa, and are being slaughtered in the crossfire between the sides in the ongoing battle. The UN estimates that some 27 civilians are killed in Raqqa daily.

However and despite the presence of the around 1,000-strong ISIS (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) force in the city, it is the US-led bombing campaign which is mostly responsible for the civilian death toll there, local media activist Musa al Khalafa told RT.

“What is happening now in Raqqa is destruction not liberation at all,” Khalafa noted. “More than 2,000 people have been killed as results of the US led coalition bombing and the SDF shelling of civilians in Raqqa.”

While the numbers are hard to verify, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said his office had managed to confirm reports of 151 civilian deaths from just six aerial or ground operations during August alone.

“Given the extremely high number of reports of civilian casualties this month and the intensity of the air strikes on Raqqa, coupled with ISIL’s use of civilians as human shields, I am deeply concerned that civilians – who should be protected at all times – are paying an unacceptable price and that forces involved in battling ISIL are losing sight of the ultimate goal of this battle,” Zeid said in a statement Thursday.

‘Unacceptable price for civilians’: UN says US-led coalition airstrikes may breach intl law

Describing the 84 days of SDF’s liberation campaign of Raqqa nothing short of a “siege,” Khalafa said that “is imposed only on civilians, women, children, old and sick people,” who are already suffering from ISIS.

The activist noted that the US-led jets are indiscriminately bombing civilians and refugees, sometimes striking groups of 30 to 50 people in hideouts, wrongly assessing that civilians there are legitimate ISIS targets.

Khalafa said that many families were killed near the Euphrates river while they were just getting some water. Others perished when the US-led coalition bombed bridges which served as escape routes.

“This actually prevented civilians from leaving the city not ISIL, as ISIL fighters can depart and leave the city any time – even from the territories controlled by SDF and the coalition,” the activist told RT.

“You can’t call this kind of actions liberation,” Khalafa underlined. “The city lacks electricity, running water, there is a shortage of food, like bread. They’ve destroyed bakeries. National hospital and Al-Salam hospital which served civilians in Raqqa have been attacked and destroyed completely by the US-led coalition… there are two or three operating hospitals for ISIL only.”

Between August 1 and 29, the coalition conducted 1,094 airstrikes on and near Raqqa city – up from 645 last month, the UN said Thursday citing coalition figures. In July, across Syria, a total of 885 airstrikes were conducted by the coalition.

The SDF siege on the ground against ISIS positions in the city, the activist revealed, is supported by French, British and US forces. Yet, according to Khalfa’s informed assessment, the ground troops and the air power have amounted to negligible, if any advances on the city.

‘Lines agreed to’ with Russia for final push against ISIS in Syria – US general

“The US led coalition didn’t intend to attack ISIL members or their gatherings places, as ISIL places are well-known to the public,” the activist said. “The US jets are destroying the buildings while SDF forces progress by land… but at night ISIL uses suicide vehicles to regain control of the same territories previously controlled by SDF.”

“When they talk about direct confrontation with ISIS – they are lying, there are no armed confrontations at all,” the activist told RT.

The US coalition said victory in Mosul is now “imminent.”

“The battle has reached the phase of chasing the insurgents in remaining blocks,” the Iraqi military media office said in a statement, Reuters reports. “Some members of Daesh have surrendered.”

“Our units are still continuing to advance… Not much is left before our forces reach the [Tigris] river,” where ISIS still controls the riverside district of al Maydan, the Joint Operations Command said Saturday, according to AP.

WARNING GRAPHIC FOOTAGE!

While some of the Iraqi forces are already celebrating their victory over Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), jihadist fighters, who control a territory less than one square kilometer have vowed to hold on to it or die fighting for Mosul’s Old City.

Islamist fighters “were holding onto their fortified positions,” the jihadists’ Amaq news agency reported, as cited by Reuters. “The fighters of Islamic State are collectively pledging (to fight to the) death in Maydan.”

Iraqi troops, backed by US-led coalition airstrikes and Shia and Kurdish militias, have liberated the whole eastern side of Mosul in a six-month offensive that began in October.

But securing the west of the city, in particular, the Old City, where the militants are currently holed up, has proved a challenge and an increasingly deadly operation, as firmly-entrenched militants have put up fierce resistance through booby traps, sniper fire and mortar shells filled with toxic gas.

The militants also continue to use civilians as human shields as they try to hang on to the last bits of turf, enlisting all of their family members to battle the Iraqi forces.

“The women are fighting with their children right beside them,” Lt. Gen. Sami al-Aridi was quoted as saying by AP earlier this week. “It’s making us hesitant to use airstrikes, to advance. If it weren’t for this we could be finished in just a few hours.”

Mosul’s liberation was “imminent,” Brig Gen Robert Sofge said Saturday, refusing to elaborate only saying that “it’s going to be very soon.”

Throughout the course of the campaign, human rights groups have repeatedly accused the US-led coalition of indiscriminately bombarding the civilian population in Mosul. On Friday, the US military officially confirmed a total of 603 civilian deaths in the US-led air campaign in Iraq and Syria, although independent research and human rights group estimate the figures to be significantly higher.

After more than three years of fighting, the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) has liberated Libya’s second-largest city from Islamist militants, General Khalifa Haftar announced on state TV, declaring a “new era of peace” in Benghazi.

Several Islamist militant and jihadist cells belonging to the so-called Revolutionary Shura Council of Benghazi managed to capture the cradle of the Libyan uprising in 2014, prompting competing centers of power in the fractured country to battle for the city.

After three years of fierce fighting, which began in May 2014, Field Marshal Haftar, the leader of the Libyan National Army (LNA), finally announced that his forces are now in full control of Benghazi.

“After a continuous struggle against terrorism and its agents that lasted more than three years… we announce to you the liberation of Benghazi from terrorism,” Haftar said in a speech broadcast on television.

Adding that his forces are now sweeping the city for remaining mines and bombs, Haftar promised peace to the residents of the city.

“Today Benghazi enters a new era of peace, security, reconciliation…. and, reconstruction,” Haftar noted.

With Benghazi liberated, the LNA now exerts control over the eastern part of the country, which is still struggling to recover from the repercussions of the NATO-backed uprising.

Libya descended into chaos after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, with multiple ‘governments’ and centers of power competing for control of the oil-rich country.

The first is the Presidential Council (PC), which has been based in Tripoli since March 30, 2016 and created following the signing of the UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) in December 2015. The Presidential Council presides over the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).

The second ‘government’ is the rival National Salvation Government (GNC) headed by Prime Minister Khalifa Ghwell. The GNC was installed after a coalition of armed groups supporting it won the battle for control of Tripoli in 2014.

The third center of power, headed by the anti-Islamist Marshal Haftar, is based in Tobruk and is aligned with Egypt. It completely rejects the GNC but partially recognizes the authority of the GNA. Libya’s foreign minister recently announced that Haftar was “the commander-in-chief of the Libyan army” as long as he recognizes the UN-backed GNA as the only authority.
