In 2005, Lexus became the first luxury carmaker to deliver a hybrid to market. The RX 400h was an all-wheel drive 3.3-liter V6 with a pair of electric motors, one for each set of wheels. Lexus had the luxury hybrid market to itself for several years, so if you wanted a luxury ride with a side of green, it was the only game in town. At the cusp of the 2019 model year, however, there are now plenty of options to choose from—including some promising EVs from the likes of Jaguar and Audi. But Lexus—the second-most-popular luxury badge in the US—is still in the game, with five models at different price points. Starting at $ 38,535, the NX 300h sits at the low end of the luxury-SUV price spectrum. Marketed by Lexus as a compact SUV, the NX 300h measures 182.3″ (4,632cm), which is just a couple of inches shorter than an Audi Q5, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, or BMW X3. The NX 300h got a makeover at the beginning of 2018, adding a larger infotainment display, enhanced safety features, modest design tweaks, and a larger touchpad on the center console. While the NX 300 (formerly the NX200t) has a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine, the NX 300h has a larger 2.5-liter inline four coupled with a pair of electric motors that charge via the internal combustion engine and regenerative braking. Combined, the hybrid power plant is capable of 194hp (144.7kW) and 152lb-ft (206.1Nm) of torque. It’s no speed demon, getting you from zero to 60mph in 9.1 seconds. Toyota has slowly been entering the modern era with full smartphone integration in its cars, and now it’s time for the company’s upscale Lexus badge. Lexus has revealed that the 2019 ES sedan is its first-ever vehicle to support Apple CarPlay, giving iPhone owners familiar apps and Siri while they ride in style. There’s still no Android Auto support, sadly, but you do get Alexa voice control both in and outside of the car.
The ES is a tech-laden car even if you don’t care for voice assistants. The standard model includes an 8-inch center display, but you can spring for a navigation package that gives you an ultra-wide 12.3-inch screen and a mobile Verizon hotspot. Every variant comes with an updated pre-collision detection system that can detect cyclists. And this being a Toyota brand, there’s naturally a hybrid variant — the ordinary V6-equipped ES 350 is joined by a hybrid ES 300h whose updated electric motor is better at mimicking the power delivery of a gas engine. You shouldn’t see as much of an obvious change when the electric motor kicks in.
Lexus hasn’t divulged pricing for the new ES (the 2018 model starts at $ 38,335), but it should reach dealerships in September. We’d expect CarPlay to reach other Lexus vehicles as the 2019 model year arrives. As with the earlier Toyota announcements, this iPhone tie-in isn’t likely to reel you in by itself. Rather, it’s that you no longer have to rule out a Lexus if CarPlay is a must-have.

After four years of rumors about a Lexus LS powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the chief engineer of the flagship sedan says the carmaker’s working on even more options. Toshio Asahi told Australia’sGoAuto that three alternative powertrains — plug-in hybrid, full electric, and hydrogen — are “all on the table” for consideration. Asahi wouldn’t give any timeframes, but whenever they arrive, additional drive options would fill out the LS range to better contend with the Germans.
Years of reports predicted this fifth-generation LS would get hydrogen power. A Motoring article at the end of 2014 forecast a fuel cell LS to arrive by 2017. In 2015 Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported that Lexus was considering a fuel cell option to arrive in 2020, around the time of the Tokyo Olympics. Later that year, at the Tokyo Motor Show, Lexus showed off the LF-FC concept, powered by a cell and stack arranged for “optimum front-rear weight distribution for a sporty saloon.” GoAuto said that during that show, a Lexus executive said an FCEV powertrain would end up in production “sooner than you think.” The following year, Autocar reported we’d see a production version of the LF-FC “on sale before 2020” as a replacement for the LS, and last year, Lexus trademarked the name “LF-FC Concept.”
The intel gets murkier regarding plug-in hybrid and full electric versions. We now know Lexus is working on a more powerful hybrid system. The current hybrid produces a total system 354 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque using the same 3.5-liter V6 in the standard car as a base, though the standard car adds two turbos for 415 hp and 442 lb-ft. The coming hybrid will likely use the twin-turbo setup and could achieve two important ends: Smoothing out noted issues of powertrain refinement, and at least matching the power specs of Mercedes-Benz and BMW flagship plug-in hybrids. That hybrid LS would still miss out on the all-electric driving of its rivals. If there really is an LF-FC coming in the next two years, it would seem a perfect time to retire the conventional hybrid and introduce a plug-in version embodying the velvet sophistication Lexus is known for.
The battery electric LS is a big question mark outside of Lexus HQ. Last year Toyota announced a breakthrough in solid state battery technology, the carmaker announcing it wanted such batteries on the market by 2022. The technology won’t be cheap, making an LS the perfect car to launch it, and compete with Mercedes’ electric EQ S sedan slated to arrive in 2020.

Lexus has shared a teaser image of a yet-unnamed future production car, which we believe to be the upcoming ES. The now-familiar spindle grille fills almost the entire image, which Lexus has served us with the tagline “Expect the Unexpected”.
So, what to expect? Word on the street is that the rear-drive GS saloon is on its way out for good, and the ES would fill its shoes. The 2011-introduced GS has been a slow seller recently, and Lexus might lift the ES to the position of its sole midsize sedan – especially as it moves onto the new TNGA platform already used by the Camry and Avalon, known ES relatives on the Toyota side of things. Let’s not forget the ES nameplate debuted way back in the late ’80s on a posher Camry with frameless windows, and the models have walked hand-in-hand ever since.
The “Unexpected” tagline could be justified by offering all-wheel drive, which would be a first in the ES; the blue tinge of the teaser’s Lexus logo refers to a hybrid system, which is also mentioned in the company’s teaser tweet. The car will be a global model, which the ES hasn’t yet been.
More than just a pretty face. Offering a range of advanced gasoline and hybrid drivetrains so the world can experience the luxury of Lexus. Witness another Lexus global debut in Beijing on April 25th. https://t.co/keFrERmgPDpic.twitter.com/v1cm88iMmb

At 7,773 units, the ageing GS’s 2017 sales have nearly halved from 2016’s 14,878, which also saw a significant drop from over 23,000 cars sold in 2015, when it was last refreshed. By comparison, Lexus sold over 51,000 ES models last year, also topping 2017’s Toyota Avalon sales by almost 20,000 cars. Perhaps the more aristocratic GS isn’t seen as a viable as the more bread-and-butter ES, which could be imported to Europe for the first time ever. Earlier this month, we reported that GS orders and production are being called off.
Lexus will unveil the new car in Beijing later this month. More teasers are likely to be on their way, and with them, we can report more about the car’s appearance and likely spec. In a flurry of crossovers, a traditional saloon sounds like a fresh thing to introduce.

The 2018 Lexus GX 460 has been on sale since late 2009. There have been a few minor updates, but a 2018 model is essentially the same as one from 2010. It’s based on the global Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and shares more than a little with the Toyota 4Runner. It slots between the Lexus RX and the big daddy Lexus LX. Despite its age, it’s still a seller. Sales were up in 2017. In fact, the GX had its best year in the U.S. since 2005. Blame cheap gas all you want. Really, people just want SUVs.
We have a base-spec model. The only option is navigation. There’s no heated seats or upgraded audio or safety features like blind-spot monitoring or active cruise control. It’s basic and honest, but it also highlights just how out of date the GX really is.
Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore: The GX 460 is a body-on-frame, V8-powered, three-row grunt. It’s comfortable and functional, but in a segment with more than a few options, this one struggles to stand out. The styling is polarizing yet somehow also vanilla. The spindle grille looks awkward and out of place — a dissonant interpretation of Lexus’ latest design language — while the lightly flared fenders say almost nothing.
The 4.6-liter V8 only puts out 301 horsepower but still slurps gas to the tune of 15 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. Power delivery is fine via the six-speed automatic transmission, but the GX 460 feels sluggish from launches. The interior is nice enough with pleasing materials and an intuitive layout. Visibility is solid, you’re certainly high enough up, so the command driving position is confidence-inducing. Not a fan of the eight-inch multimedia screen, which feels small and isn’t the most informative system I’ve ever used.
Overall, I’d give the GX 460 a C+ compared to other vehicles in this segment. Decent, but dated and lacking some compelling elements. That being said, if you’re a Lexus loyalist and want a beastly three-row SUV, you will like this one. If you’re more brand agnostic, there are better options out there.
Associate Editor Reese Counts: Let’s get one thing out of the way — the Lexus GX is old. Yes, it’s been on sale essentially unchanged since late 2009, but that’s not all there is to it. This is a traditional, body-on-frame SUV with a torquey V8 and a real four-wheel drive system. It’s one of the last of its breed. Customers have shifted away from these behemoths, settling on more comfortable and more efficient car-based crossovers. Just look at Lexus’ lineup. Through March, Lexus has sold 5,691 GX. Compare that to 23,790 RX. Cost has a bit to do with it, but really, tastes have changed.
I wonder where the heated seat controls are supposed to go. pic.twitter.com/Z1N4tzpLtT
— Reese Counts (@rmcounts) April 10, 2018
The interior is dated. Our base-trim model didn’t help. There were big blanks where some of the four-wheel drive and heated-seat controls were supposed to go. It looks cheap and just tells passengers you couldn’t afford more. We were also stuck with Toyota’s terrible infotainment system. Some of us on staff experienced frequent Bluetooth connectivity issues (yes, we made sure everything was up to date). There was only one UBS port, a big penalty compared to the competition.
All that said, I really enjoyed driving this thing. It’s surprisingly composed for a body-on-frame SUV. The ride was fantastic, aided in part by forgiving off-road suspension and more sidewall than I’ve seen in years. The seats were shaped perfectly for my back. It was a really great place to be while searching metro Detroit for a new house. The V8 may be relatively underpowered, but it felt strong enough driving in traffic. Sounded good, too.
I liked it so much I actually came home and started looking for used ones online. Buying a 2010 model is essentially the same as buying this one (minus some visual updates). I’ve been wanting a good off-roader for overlanding, and this has the credentials. This may be a dinosaur, but it’s a charming and comfortable one.
