You may like the thought of jeans with a worn-in finish, but that look frequently comes at a steep cost. It not only takes a long time to finish jeans (two to three pairs per hour), it frequently involves thousands of chemical formulations. Levi’s thinks there’s a faster and more environmentally responsible way. It recently introduced Project FLX, a system that uses lasers to finish denim. The technique involves taking photos of the jeans and illustrating them– the laser then gently marks the jeans based on that illustration to create the simulated wear. This cuts the finishing time from several minutes or more to just 90 seconds, and whittles the number of necessary chemicals down to a “a few dozen.”

As you might guess, this also opens the door to greater creativity. Levi’s can make an authentic-looking wear if it wants, but it can also make ornate artwork. This also dramatically reduces the lead time for decisions on jeans from several months to weeks or even days, opening the door to more on-demand manufacturing and local production. You might not get to custom-design your pants, but you might not have to worry about supplies of your favorite pair, either.

This isn’t a theoretical exercise. Levi’s is testing Project FLX now, and expects to phase it into its supply chain over the course of 2 years. This doesn’t completely eliminate concerns around the remaining chemicals in jeans production, but it could make you feel better about your next outfit — not to mention save Levi’s some time and money in the process.

Levi’s have collaborated with super-cool French fashion brand Vetements to create the “bum window” jeans.

The jeans feature a zip right down the middle of the bottom as well as well as zips down the legs.

A pair costs £1,490 – and when Vetements shared images of the jeans and the cut off shorts version, they received thousands of likes.

Surprisingly, commenters loved the shorts, with one writing: “Very cool”.

Another said: “I need these”.

However one irate customer commented on how uncomfortable the zips are, and wrote: “I have to say these series of ur collection is super uncomfortable!!! it’s like wearing a thorn!

“I wanna say they are beautiful but even by looking at them I feel uncomfortable!!! think a bit before you design. not everything is creative!” (sic)

The jeans version were even more popular on Instagram, receiving over 50,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

Commenters were divided over the jeans, and one wrote: “Oh man…HELL NO!”

Another said: “Are you serious??”

But one person was definitely a fan, and said: “Ok this is a yes”.

Vetements are a Parisian design collective who shot to fame in autumn 2014 for their quirky style. They have over 1.5million followers on Instagram.

Two years after first teasing us with its line of connected clothing, Google and Levi’s have put us out of our misery. The first piece to come out of Project Jacquard is the Commuter Trucker jacket, and as a reward for waiting so long, you’ll have to pay $ 350 for the garment.

The key to the Commuter is the fabric of the jacket’s left sleeve. While technically powered by a rechargeable tag that’s found on the inside of the sleeve, the very material of the jacket is itself smart. Indeed, its comprised of a conductive yarn that could theoretically be woven into any fabric, and as a result, any sort of clothing. From there, you could just touch your clothing as you would a touchscreen in order to activate certain functionalities, like playing music.

As it stands, Google is trying to figure out how third-party developers can contribute to the platform, which means that for the time being, the Commuter will only be able to manipulate the core functionality of your smartphone, like answering the phone, reading texts, or managing your Calendar and figuring out Maps. And because this is a Google product, it probably won’t work so well with your iPhone.

“It was a long road but what’s really impressive, is the entire journey, we stayed true to our vision and what we wanted to achieve,” Ivan Poupyrev, project lead for Project Jacquard at Google, told Mashable. “This jacket is going to be sold as a piece of apparel, that was always the vision from the very beginning.”

But not only is it a good piece of clothing, but it also solves what Levi’s believes to be a very present need — a wearable that is functional and not dangerous.

“When you go to dinner and see your people at their meals looking at their screen, or when you see cyclists accessing their screens for navigation and putting themselves at risk … to me, that really was the reason to do it, ” said Paul Dillinger, Levi’s global product innovation head, at a SXSW discussion on connectivity this past Saturday.

So whether you want it for its aesthetic appeal or technical prowess, just be prepared for spend a pretty penny on this connected jacket.

The connected denim smart jacket made in partnership between Levi’s and Google’s ATAP division now has a price tag, but its release date has been pushed from this spring to the fall. The jacket, which will cost around $ 350 when it goes on sale, is the first commercial product containing ATAP’s Project Jacquard technology, which uses conductive fabric to turn a standard article of clothing into a connected device of sorts that can send instructions to your smartphone. Think of its functions as similar to those of a smartwatch, but less obtrusive and certainly a lot more stylish.

The news of the revised release date and the price was announced onstage at the SXSW festival here in Austin, where Levi’s global product innovation head Paul Dillinger and ATAP’s Project Jacquard lead Ivan Poupyrev held a discussion on the future of connectivity. Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket, as the product is called, was first announced at the Google I/O developer conference back in May of last year. At the time, we got a spring 2017 release date, but no price.

Still, a delayed product hitting store shelves this year is better than no product. After all, ATAP had to cancel its promising modular phone concept, Project Ara, last September. That leaves it now with Project Soli, a radar system for wearables that lets you make turn gestures into inputs without touching a screen. That project is still in the works and presumably on its way toward some type of developer or consumer product.
