Ute McDonnell, whose daughter Marsha was murdered by Bellfield, will ensure her TV is off when Manhunt begins. She has spent years trying to overcome the horror of her daughter’s death at the hands of Bellfield, who also killed Milly Dowler, 13, and French student Amelie Delagrange, 22. Now she fears the TV reconstruction of one of the murders could plunge her into new despair unless she avoids it.

In the three-part drama Martin Clunes, 57, plays Chief Inspector Colin Sutton, who led the hunt for Bellfield.

Ms McDonnell said: “I was informed about the programme by ITV, but it does not bring back happy memories for me.

“I will not be watching. I don’t watch a lot of TV but I will switch it off tonight anyway.

“My family are grown up now and it is up to them what they want to do. I don’t know if they will watch.

“For me, life moves on and I lead a very busy life. My life is in the future and not in the past. It happened. I can’t change that.

“The people from ITV have been very polite. They told me what was happening.

“I always get made aware of any kind of developments or situations like this. But it is not interesting or good for me to watch something like this. It just brings back bad memories.”

Marsha, 19, was in sight of her home in Hampton, west London, in 2003 when she was battered with a lump hammer by 6ft 1in Bellfield, 50. 

Tonight’s drama focuses on the murder of Ms Delagrange, who was beaten to death by Bellfield on Twickenham Green in August 2004.

During the murder hunt Inspector Sutton connected Bellfield to the killings of Marsha and Milly.

Bellfield, played on TV by Celyn Jones, owned a wheel clamping business in west London.

He was given three life sentences in 2008 for the murder of Ms Delagrange, Marsha and the 2004 attempted murder of Kate Sheedy, 18 – who gave evidence against him in court.

He was already in prison for the murders when in 2011 he received a fourth life term and second whole-life tariff for the killing of Milly, from Weybridge, Surrey, in 2002.

Clunes has stressed that the drama is not “violence porn”.

He said: “Through-out the production process, it was crucially important to me we respected the memory of Marsha McDonnell and Milly Dowler, as well as Amelie Delagrange.

“We don’t see any of the crimes take place in the drama. They are real and abhorrent crimes and to see them re-enacted would be wrong for this particular drama.

“The focus is on the police work.

We don’t glamorise anything, we don’t sensationalise anything.”

Last week it was claimed Bellfield was part of a paedophile gang which preyed on more than 17 children in care.

Scotland Yard is now studying a council report which reveals links between the triple killer and six men accused of grooming children as young as 13 to be raped.

Guardians of the Galaxy was far from a sure thing when Marvel Studios released it back in 2013. It essentially served as a test to see how far audiences were willing to go with the studio: if people could accept and enjoy a story involving a talking raccoon and a space tree, there’s basically no limit to the stories Marvel could tell.

Meanwhile, the troubles with Warner Bros.’ DC movies have been well-documented. But former Marvel actor Zachary Levi, who’s starring as the title character in the upcoming Shazam movie that’s scheduled to come out in 2019, hopes Shazam could be DC’s Guardians of the Galaxy equivalent…and he might be onto something.

Speaking at the Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in San Jose, California (via ComingSoon), Levi explained his thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy and how he thinks Shazam could serve a similar function in the DC cinematic universe:

“James Gunn and the gang killed it. It brought so much heart and humor and I think it was kind of this dark horse that took everyone by storm. I think Shazam kind of has the possibility to do that, because Shazam is not, for all intents and purposes, it’s not Supes (Superman), it’s not Batman, it’s not Wonder Woman. If you look at most Justice League montages or Justice League posters, Shazam is not necessarily one of the characters you put on there, except he is in the Justice League, so if we do well enough…”

The actor went on to draw a comparison that’s sure to excite fans of early Tom Hanks comedies:

“Shazam gets to be a fun, jovial, because he is, he’s Billy Batson, he’s 13. It’s the movie Big, but with superpowers – which I’m beyond stoked about.”

Not only did Guardians work on a narrative level, but it was also a huge box office success. Justice League – theoretically the DC universe’s crowning achievement – has only pulled in $ 197 million domestically after three weeks of release, so the DC universe still has a lot of catching up to do in financial terms. But creatively speaking, I think Levi could have a point: the concept of Shazam is inherently lighter than nearly everything else that has come before it in the DC movie universe, and if all the right pieces fall into place, I can totally see this becoming a breakout standalone movie that could be the most purely fun movie DC has made in decades.

Levi will don the red suit as the superhero, while Asher Angel plays the 13-year-old Billy Batson and former Green Lantern villain Mark Strong steps into the villainous role of Doctor Sivana. David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) will direct, and the movie is set to arrive in theaters sometime in 2019.

“It surprised me hearing that because there have been a lot of great quarterbacks who have played on this team,” Mitchell said. “I want to focus on one Cup and it’s this one here.”

The beginning of Bo in the Canadian Football League can be traced back to one pivotal play five years ago at BC Place Stadium, during the 2012 West Final.

The Stampeders were the underdogs against the BC Lions and had a 24-16 lead late in the third quarter. John Hufnagel was the coach. Dave Dickenson was calling the offensive plays.

The Stamps were facing a third down and one situation when Dickenson turned to Hufnagel and asked if they wanted to call a play set up for Mitchell. Huff, as many refer to him, didn’t blink.

Mitchell was the third-string quarterback and hadn’t thrown a pass in the CFL at that point.

With 4:28 left in the third quarter and the Stamps on the Lions 42-yard line, Mitchell settled in for the play.

“I had one of the fastest guys out there in Mo Price so when I did the play action and started coming across I was supposed to set up but I felt defensive end pressure, so I continued to roll and put the ball out there for him.”

Mitchell can remember every moment of that play. He threw a 41-yard strike to Maurice Price and set the Stamps up on the one-yard line. Hufnagel left him in to punch the ball into the end zone. Except, it didn’t go as planned on the first try.

“I tried to run a wide sweep and reached out and [Lions’ linebacker Solomon] Elimimian broke two of my ribs. And then we had to go for it again on second down. Didn’t get it. Had to go for it on third down and I stretched my hands out and got it,” Mitchell said.

The Stamps went on to win the game and Mitchell prepared for the 100th Grey Cup with two broken ribs.

Top play ever

All these years later Mitchell calls it his “top play ever” in his football career. And this is a guy who has done a lot of winning and has made a lot of plays. He knew then how big that play was for how much trust his coaches were placing on him.

“I knew what it meant to my future career,” he said. “I’ve seen Huff lose confidence in guys for less.”

Hufnagel, now the Stamps general manager, says that play told him everything he needed to know about his future starting quarterback.

“He’s one of the reasons we’ve been so successful, said Hufnagel. “Winning football games is important to Bo.”

Dickenson agrees. “I think we all thought Bo was going to be a good football player, including Bo, but when he stepped into the game of that magnitude as the third-string quarterback and executed that play perfectly, I think we felt the game wasn’t too big for this kid.”

Hufnagel still remembers Mitchell’s first start in the CFL, 2013 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“He was 28 for 34 that day and didn’t turn the ball over and has never looked back.” 

Third time a charm?

On Sunday, Mitchell is leading the Stampeders into the team’s third Grey Cup appearance in four years.

In 2014, Calgary beat Hamilton 20-16 to win the championship, with Mitchell carrying the team that day. The 6’2″ Texan completed 25-of-34 passes and threw for 334 yards. He was named the Grey Cup MVP.

Last season Mitchell was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player and led the heavily-favoured Stampeders into the Grey Cup game against the Ottawa Redblacks. A botched play from the Ottawa two-yard line late in the game forced Calgary to kick a field goal and put the game into overtime. Henry Burris found some overtime magic to defeat Calgary, sending the Stamps and Mitchell into an off-season wondering what might have been.

Now it’s this third time for Mitchell.

“I’ve heard all the questions,” says the Calgary QB. “Do we have a chip on our shoulder? How is this year different? We just have to lock in and make plays.”

His head coach, who called the play that propelled Mitchell into all of this, believe his quarterback is ready to make some history.

“He has the best winning percentage in the history of the league,” Dickenson said. “He might actually play his best football in the big games.”

Just ahead of the release of Justice League next month comes breaking casting news of an upcoming DC film. Zachary Levi (Chuck, Psych, two of the Thor films) will star in Shazam! for director David F. Sandberg. Shazam! will be the next DECU movie to film, with a 2019 release date likely. Wether or not Dwayne Johnson‘s Black Adam will figure into the standalone Shazam! film has yet to be confirmed. The Shazam casting news awaits you below.

DC’s Shazam, originally called Captain Marvel (not to be confused with Marvel’s Captain Marvel), is a superhero with one hell of a secret identity: he’s actually a young boy named Joseph “Billy” Batson. Billy was chosen to be a champion of good by a wizard, because comic books are wild, folks. Whenever Billy says “Shazam!” (an acronym for the names Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury), he’s struck by a magic thunderbolt and transformed into an adult superhero. Think Big, but as a superhero movie. A few years ago, Billy was retconned to be a bit of a juvenile delinquent, but the classic take on the character was more fun and optimistic.

Shazam! will be the next DCEU film to shoot, with Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation filmmaker David F. Sandberg set to direct. Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) and Darren Lemke (Turbo, Goosebumps) will pen the Shazam! screenplay. And now Zachary Levi, an actor who is no stranger to superhero projects, having appeared in the two most of the three Thor films, including the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, has been cast in the lead, per THR. One would assume this means Levi will be playing the adult superhero that young Billy Batson transforms into whenever he cries out “Shazam!”, and Levi’s comedic background on shows like Chuck suggests he’ll be able to play the character as a child in the form of an adult.

DC also has a film in development which focuses on Shazam! villain Black Adam, with Dwayne Johnson set to play the character. THR says it’s “unclear” whether or not Johnson will be involved with the Shazam! movie, but one would assume that to be the case. Shazam! and Black Adam are just two of many upcoming DCEU projects in the works. Filming just wrapped on James Wan’s Aquaman, and a standalone Batgirl movie and Suicide Squad sequel are both being planned. Then there’s a potential Joker spin-off from producer Martin Scorsese. And of course, there’s a Wonder Woman sequel. Justice League, DC’s next film, will open November 17, 2017.
