1. Some of the sharpest minds left Wall Street's biggest banks to manage billionaires' money. They leave the fame and notoriety for their big-name bosses, but their investment decisions help these ultra-wealthy families grow their fortunes.

Take Jordan Stein, a 39-year-old former Citi banker. He is in charge of investing Marian Ilitch and her late husband Mike's money, which swelled after they founded Little Caesars Pizza in 1959. The Detroit-headquartered pizza chain has helped the family build an estimated $ 4.3 billion empire that now includes the Detroit Tigers baseball team and the MotorCity Casino Hotel.

The stadium that hosts my beloved Detroit Pistons basketball team is also named Little Caesars Arena.

Stein did not even know Little Caesars still existed when he was first approached for the job. But six years later, Stein has helped build a family office from scratch for one of the most prosperous families in the US.

Chief investment officers like Stein are part of an elite cohort of money managers who have helped rich families build their treasure chests.

Many got their start on Wall Street, but some come from a hodge-podge of different industries.

2. Wall Street just kicked off an annual Hunger Games-style recruiting ritual for junior talent. The process has bankers interviewing past midnight for jobs that do not start until 2024.

10. And here's our Friday Banker of the Week. Meet Joshua Pang, a managing director at Carlyle who leads the investment firm's digital-infrastructure business.

Pang just wrapped up a $ 1 billion partnership with Tillman to support investments in US towers for telecommunications infrastructure. It comes after Pang worked on Carlyle's acquisition of data-center operator Involta.

Private-equity firms have piled more than $ 40 billion into deals for data centers this year, a record annual amount, according to PitchBook data.

  • KKR has acquired industrial real-estate property 101 at Van Buren for approximately $ 90 million. The asset consists of two buildings in Phoenix, Arizona. KKR purchased the properties from a real-estate fund advised by Crow Holdings Capital and Seefried Industrial Properties.
  • Andrea Serra has joined alternative asset manager ICG as its head of Europe for the firm's strategic-equity business, which focuses on GP-led secondary transactions. London-based Serra joins from Blackstone where he most recently worked as a managing director in its tactical opportunities group.

Today’s new Apex Legends update has caused issues that have led to players losing their account progress and cosmetic items.

This is affecting players on all platforms and appears directly tied to whatever changes were made to the game today.

Since the release of Apex update 1.1, Respawn has taken the game servers offline for maintenance.

This remains in place until the development team can fix today’s issues and should stop any further problems.

Respawn is warning players to not buy any new items until maintenance is complete and they have given the okay.

“Hey all, sorry about this,” a message from Respawn explains.

“We are going to start turning off servers as we do maintenance and we’ll be updating this post with info as we look into this.

“Until we have the issue resolved we recommend you do not buy or craft anything. We’re working to give you folks an ETA.”

From what has been described by fans, their Apex Legends progress, including items earned and levelling experience, have disappeared.

This has left some players to have to go through the training process again.

Fans are hoping that this is just database mismatch and that no permanent damage will be done to player accounts.

But until Respawn gives the okay and rolls back the servers, they have warned everyone not to be doing much with their Apex accounts.

“We are aware and looking into the issue with accounts losing their progress after the update today. Will provide an update ASAP.

“Until the issue has been resolved we recommend players do not buy or craft anything. We’ll continue to provide updates, along with an ETA, as information comes in.”

No ETA has been provided yet on how long today’s issues could last but it appears Respawn will be giving routine updates tonight.

One affected user writes: “Level 155, Spent $ 1000 on the game, have 58 legendary skins, 30+ skins on every single legend and weapon, level 34 BP.

“All legends unlocked, 3k crafting metals, 40k legends tokens, 200 apex coins.”

Another adds: “I’m assuming they’ll just restore my account to its former status after, so I didn’t. If you end up keeping the items after the reset I know I’ll deeply regret it, but hey.”

Scrambled, over easy, poached, or sunny-side up, there are so many ways to enjoy the humble egg. To kick things up a notch, we got chefs from all over the country to weigh in on their favorite egg add-ins — and they range from hearty potatoes and gooey cheese to shaved truffle and ‘nduja.

Here are some of the best ways to take your eggs to the next level, according to chefs. 

Level up your bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich with spicy bacon.

“The best thing to add to eggs is cheese,” Nick Korbee, executive chef and co-owner of NYC’s Egg Shop, told INSIDER. “We are currently pairing triple cream brie with sunny up egg, crispy kale, and pepper bacon for a special sandwich.”

He also suggests adding a bit of spice to your eggs, which can be done by topping an egg sandwich with pickled jalapeños or spicy bacon.

Add an extra dose of richness to poutine by serving eggs over top.

“One of our favorite dishes to make at Fort Louise is our tater tot poutine,” Greg Biggers, executive chef and co-owner of Fort Louise in Nashville, told INSIDER. “We love this dish for brunch and adding a couple of over easy or sunny-side up eggs on top of tater tots covered with sausage gravy, cheese curds, and bacon is a hit with our guests.”

US District Court Judge Bernard Friedman argued the Female Genital Mutilation Act of 1996, overreached Congressional powers, violating both the Necessary and Proper Clause and the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. Anti-FGM laws, he ruled, should be handled by the states like other laws governing criminal sexual conduct.

The defendant, Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, isn’t entirely off the hook – she still faces 20 years in prison for conspiracy to travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, and four co-defendants remain charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.

The “conspiracy” at the center of the case involved up to 100 young girls from multiple states, according to prosecutors, though the charges brought against Nagarwala only reference nine. An Indian Muslim from the Dawoodi Bohra sect, Nagarwala was charged in April 2017 with performing female genital mutilation on the girls at a clinic in Livonia, Michigan, the first person to be prosecuted under the 1996 anti-FGM law.

Along with clinic owner Dr. Fakhruddin Attar, she was also charged with conspiring to transport a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, which carries a life sentence, but Friedman dropped those charges in January. Attar’s wife, Farida, was charged with helping to arrange the procedure and later saddled with an additional charge of drugging one of the girls.

Nagarwala remains free on $ 4.5 million bond – believed to be the largest unsecured bond in Detroit history – but is under house arrest, strapped with an ankle monitor. Prosecutors worried her wealth and ties to India and Africa made her a flight risk, pointing out she had attempted to board a flight to Kenya before her arrest, and the judge opted to freeze her and her husband’s retirement accounts and assets when she was released from jail to await trial.

The four other defendants allegedly brought their daughters from Illinois and Minnesota as well as other parts of Michigan to be circumcised by Nagarwala over the course of 12 years. FGM is internationally condemned as a violation of human rights, though it is practiced by some members of the Dawoodi Bohra.

Facebook is still continuing its assault against Twitch, as the social media giant has expanded its Level Up Program to game streamers around the world, totalling 21 countries. The Level Up Program helps streamers build a community on Facebook. Streamers that are eligible can earn some extra cash through Facebook Stars — similar to Twitch Bits — which are virtual goods that fans can purchase to help their favorite streamers. Level Up streamers can also unlock 1080p/60fps streaming quality, customize their dashboard and get early access to beta products and features. And much like Twitch, Facebook has a partner program that can help streamers earn additional funds and have greater reach and visibility.

Facebook’s foray into gaming and esports has been middling. It signed a major deal with ESL One, a premiere Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament series, that has so far netted mediocre viewership. Fans and esports insiders blame lack of viewership on Twitch dominance and the poor marketing on Facebook’s part. But with so many streaming services now vying for attention, including Microsoft’s Mixer and YouTube Gaming, it’s going to be difficult for Facebook to carve out its own niche.

Twitter announced today on its developer forum that all emojis will count evenly toward the platform’s maximum 280 character limit. Before this update, various modifiers such as gender and skin tone caused certain emojis to use up more characters than other emojis.

Practically, this means that now every emoji counts as the same amount of characters, thus making things a little more equal on the microblogging service.

According to Twitter global lead developer advocate Andy Piper, “This update marks significant progress for our service, and everyone can now benefit from the additional room to express themselves with more characters…” This new change comes about a year after Twitter doubled the max character count from 140 to 280 and just weeks after Twitter announced an option to return to the chronological feed.
