In this edition of Sequel Bits:
Remember how the ending of Toy Story 3 made you cry until your head hurt? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Appearing on the BBC Radio 2 talk show “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show,” Tom Hanks talked a little about the emotional moment he recorded the Toy Story 4 finale. “It was the first time that we were going to be recording the end of the movie, and Toy Story [4] is going to have an impactful ending,” said the actor, who voices Woody in the franchise. Hanks went on to add: “The way you record Toy Story, you’re in a room with the team that has created it. When I went in for my last day of recording, I wanted to have my back to them, because usually, you’re facing him so he can look right up and you can talk about it… But I didn’t want to see them and pretend they couldn’t see me.” Hanks comments compliment those of his co-star Tim Allen, who previously said he had trouble getting through recording the final scene because it was so emotional. In short, prepare to weep again when Toy Story 4 arrives June 21, 2019.
Recently, word came from Fede Alvrez that the script for Labyrinth 2 was written, which lead many to report the script was “complete.” Alvarez has now clarified things, saying that’s not exactly true. “I never said the script is complete,” Alvarez told MovieWeb. “I never believe the script is actually complete. We do have a first version of it, we have a first version that I think is amazing. I’m sure we’ve gotta write more…” Alvarez also added: “It will take some time because that’s not something you rush. It’s been enough years that I think no one should rush that one. We’re gonna try and get it right.” I’m really not sure what to make of this Labyrinth sequel idea in general. How can you make Labyrinth without David Bowie? I guess we’ll find out, sooner or later.
That boy Tommy Cruise is at it again. The actor who insists on doing his own stunts might be taking things even further for Top Gun 2, aka Top Gun: Maverick. This is a rumor for now, because it comes from an anonymous source over at the Daily Mail, but Cruise apparently wants to really fly a fighter jet in the movie – not just pretend. If this is true, we’ll know about it soon, because Cruise is never shy about publicity regarding his crazy-ass stunts. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be the real deal, though.
Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg have been teasing a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin for years, so forgive me if I have my doubts about this story. But according to Jackson, the long-awaited sequel could start production next year. Per Yahoo, Jackson said he and his team will “possibly even doing mo-cap next year.” I’ll believe it when I see it! I quite enjoyed the first Tintin, and I’d happily watch a sequel – although I’d be more excited if Steven Spielberg were coming back to direct. But the plan was always for Spielberg to direct the first film, and for Jackson to make the follow-up, so we shall see.
The on-again, off-again story of Lethal Weapon 5 appears to be on-again…maybe. Richard Donner has been hoping to reunite Danny Glover and Mel Gibson for yet another entry in the action franchise for some time now, and the project has gone through fits and starts. At one point, Donner said it was a sure thing…then walked it back, saying it might not happen after all. Now, in an interview with Movies In Focus, Donner is once again saying it could happen. According to the filmmaker, he’s hired a writer to turn in a new draft, and if the draft is good, he’ll go from there. I’m not sure anyone even wants a Lethal Weapon 5 at this point, but I could be wrong.
Kevin Smith is rebooting Jay and Silent Bob, somehow, and according to Jason Mewes, production will begin soon. The actor, who plays Jay in the series, told Laugh Spin: “Hopefully, all is going as planned. We have the money. We have location. We have the offers out to people. Kevin and I went to the doctor cuz, you know, you have to get insured and bonded and stuff. We’re in motion to start pre-production January. February we start shooting. So as long as everything stays on track, yes, Jay and Silent Bob reboot will be made and I’m very excited because I definitely would love to do one more Jay and Bob movie before, you know, we get super old and too old to hang out with apes and swing from grappling hooks and all that good stuff. ” Mewes also added that “we were going to do Mallrats 2. We started making plans. We got people going, ‘Hey, we got the money.’ But then Universal owns the rights, and Universal’s like, ‘We’ve never given a title back to anybody. We don’t want to make the movie.’” So don’t expect Mallrats 2 anytime soon.

Regularly scheduled fresh Fox fare saw a slight uptick this Tuesday night, perhaps as people sought solace from Midterms Election coverage.
The Gifted delivered 2.4 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating, up 20 percent and a tenth from last week. Lethal Weapon (3.2 million/0./7) similarly rose 19 percent and a tenth.
Among the broadcast networks delivering wall-to-wall Election Night coverage, NBC led the pack with an average audience of 5.8 million total viewers, followed by ABC (5.3 mil) and CBS (4.3 mil). The CW aired reruns of The Flash (1 mil/0.3) and Black Lightning (790K/0.2).

China is sending some of its most advanced fighter jets and bombers to Russia later this month for a major international military exercise.
“The International Army Games 2018, initiated by the Russian Ministry of Defense, will start on July 28,” China’s Ministry of Defense said in a press statement last week. “It is co-organized by China, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, and Iran.”
“Participation in the International Army Games is an effective way to improve fighting capabilities under real combat conditions,” the press statement added.
Yue Gang, a retired PLA colonel, told the South China Morning Post that the exercises will help the PLA learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of its aircraft and also learn from Russia about hardware and pilot training.
China and Russia’s militaries have grown increasingly close lately, with Chinese Defense Minister Gen. Wei Fenghe and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying in early April that the two nations had forged a “strategic partnership” against a “unipolar” world dominated by the US.
Here’s what China is bringing:

The H6-K is China’s main strategic bomber, able to carry a variety of land attack and anti-ship cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions, according to The National Interest.
“It will be the first time that H-6K bombers … have gone abroad to take part in military competitions,” China Ministry of Defense said.

Nerve agents kill people with gruesome efficiency, yet only after triggering unconscionable suffering through their powerful poisoning effects.
Authorities in the UK are looking into how a couple came into contact with the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok. They are the latest to be sickened by the chemical, which officials believe was used in the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

— John Wick: Chapter 3 (@JohnWickMovie) May 17, 2018
John Wick: Chapter 3 is currently filming, and we’re all pretty excited about that. We won’t see an actual teaser or trailer for a while, but here’s a motion poster to keep you satisfied for now. This tweet also confirms what you probably could’ve guessed already: the film is called John Wick: Chapter 3. Keanu Reeves returns as everyone’s favorite well-dressed hitman, who must now fight his way out of New York City. John Wick: Chapter 3 hits theaters May 17, 2019.
We all thought Lethal Weapon 5 was dead at this point. But…maybe not? In an interview with Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast, director Richard Donner said that Lethal Weapon 5 is “coming up”. Donner didn’t offer any new info, but this is a sharp contrast to Donner’s previous statement, in which he said “I don’t think it’s gonna happen.” In the past, the status of Lethal Weapon 5 has been up in the air. Both Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are apparently down to return, and Donner wants to direct, but the project has gone from seeming like a sure thing to an impossibility over and over again. Now, Donner seems to think it’s definitely happening. We’ll see.
The Paddington films are wonderful. They’re charming, funny films about a nice bear doing nice things for nice people. It’s nice! We as a society of terrible shitheads don’t deserve such nice movies, but I hope they keep making them anyway. So will there be a Paddington 3? Paddington himself, Ben Wishaw, doesn’t really know. As Wishaw tells it, Paddington director Paul King might need a break. Speaking with THR, the actor said:
“I would be up for one, but I think Paul King, who is the writer and the director and instrumental in making those films what they were, I think he quite rightly needs a break… It’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into those films, so I’m not sure if it will happen. Or, if it does, I’m not sure when it will happen… I can’t imagine doing it without Paul. For me, he’s the films. He’s a bit like Paddington Bear himself, I dunno if I could do it without him”
While I respect King’s need for some downtime, I hope he gets the go-ahead to make Paddington 3 sooner rather than later, because I need more of that marmalade loving bear in my life.
Let’s move from one Ben Wishaw story to another, shall we? In addition to playing Paddington, Wishaw also plays Q in the Bond franchise. While no official announcement has been made yet, everyone is pretty sure Danny Boyle is going to helm Bond 25, the next entry in the spy series. So when is Bond 25 going to start shooting? According to Wishaw, it won’t be until the end of the year. In an interview with THR, the actor said:
“I think it’s not happening until the end of the year, so I have no idea. I know as much as you do! I believe I’m contracted to be in it. That’s as much as I know… I was thrilled when I read that he [Danny Boyle] was going to be doing it. I can’t think of a better, more exciting director for Daniel [Craig], for the way that he’s taken the character. I think it’ll be really exciting to work with him. I’ve been such a big fan.”
As of now, Bond 25 is expected to hit theaters November 8, 2018.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has been uploading a series of behind-the-scenes featurettes called Jurassic Journals. They feature Chris Pratt talking to various members of the cast and crew of the upcoming Jurassic sequel. This latest journal features script supervisor Kelly Krieg. These videos haven’t been earth-shattering, but it’s kind of nice that the production is taking the time to highlight members of a movie crew who usually remain out of the spotlight. It takes a lot of people to get a movie – especially a big movie – like this made, and it’s nice to give them some attention. And speaking of Jurassic World, here’s an amusing photo of Jurassic World 3 director Colin Trevorrow and Jurassic World 3 co-writer Emily Carmichael on the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Studios.
This image of @emilycarmichael and @colintrevorrow on the JP ride tells you all you need to know about JW3. Here’s a new poster for The Equalizer 2. The big difference between this sequel and the first Equalizer? Hair. Denzel Washington was bald in the first Equalizer, but based on this poster, he has hair in this film. This is a whole new ball game! The Equalizer 2 has Washington once again playing ass-kicker Robert McCall, who “returns to deliver his special brand of vigilante justice – but how far will he go when it’s someone he loves?” Find out the answer to this question when The Equalizer 2 opens July 20, 2018.
David Leitch is on top of the world right now. He’s got Deadpool 2 in theaters, and he’s currently working on the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw. And then there’s the possibility of Atomic Blonde 2. When asked about that potential sequel, Leitch said:
“Oh, I would love to continue Lorraine’s story. If there’s will on all parties…it shall be. I think she’s an incredible character and it’s a really fun and interesting world and it’s an interesting take on the spy genre, sort of like revisionist history look that’s centered around a character with an existential crisis and then we wrap it up with some great trappings of music and hardcore action.”
As for Hobbs and Shaw, Leitch added that he thinks the film will appeal to fans of the Fast and Furious franchise:
“I think that we want to appeal to the fans that love the Fast universe and we definitely want to give them the spectacle that they expect. But again, the thing that makes the Fast movies work is the characters they’ve created, right? And Dwayne and Jason’s characters together are so fun and they’re some of my favorite parts of it. I’m excited to put them in crazy situations and make them survive and see where it takes them. In the universe, they come from more the spy world and the agent world and I think we want to lean into their worlds and expand their universe as well and have fun with that. Look, those movies are fun and I’m a huge fan so I’m excited to take my swing at it and do my own take.”
Jenn Murray, who has appeared in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, is boarding another franchise. According to Variety, Murray will co-star in Maleficent 2. Both Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are expected to return for the live-action Disney film. Who is Murray playing? No one knows yet! How’s that for a story, folks? In fact, no one even knows what Maleficent 2 is going to be about. We just know it’s happening. Movies!
You may have noticed Deadpool 2 has a pretty boring title, as far as modern-day sequels go. Usually, when a big movie gets a big sequel, it has some sort of stupid subtitle. You might have expected the film to be called Deadpool: Rise of the X-Force or some nonsense like that. But no, the filmmakers settled on Deadpool 2. When asked about this, Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that Deadpool 2 just seemed like the right title to use. Speaking with CinemaBlend, Reese said:
“I think we contemplated the idea of doing one of those silly titles. But it’s been done for 20 years now and it just felt a little bit like a cliche and maybe beneath us. So we decided let’s just keep it Deadpool 2.”
To which Wernick added:
“Strangely, calling it Deadpool 2 made it fresh to us.”

Netflix has had great success with true crime docuseries like Making a Murderer, The Keepers and the recent Wild Wild Country. And they’re just getting started. A new trailer devoted solely to Netflix’s true crime originals offers a round-up of sorts, while also advertising Evil Genius, premiering May 11th, and the next chapter of the series The Staircase, which is coming this summer.
Fox’s Lethal Weapon TV series is in danger of getting the axe thanks to the behavior of one of its stars. Deadline reports that Clayne Crawford, who plays Martin Riggs on the show, “has been disciplined several times over complaints of emotional abuse and creating a hostile environment.” The Deadline story adds that things have gotten so bad that other actors and crew members feel uncomfortable being on set with Crawford. Crawford later took to Instagram and admitted the reports were true. The actor added he had “met with Human Resources”, apologized for his part of the conflict and “completed studio-appointed therapy.” You can read Crawford’s full statement below.
It’s almost time for Cobra Kai, YouTube Red’s new series that serves as a sequel to the Karate Kid franchise. This new Cobra Kai teaser introduces us to Johnny Lawrence, who was the villain of the original Karate Kid, but is the anti-hero of the new series. The show is “set thirty years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament” and “focuses on Johnny Lawrence reopening the Cobra Kai dojo, which causes his rivalry with Daniel LaRusso to be reignited.” Cobra Kai arrives on YouTube Red May 2, 2018.
It’s becoming clear that if you want to stream brand new original shows, you should turn to Netflix, and if you want to stream shows you already know and love, Hulu is the place to. While Netflix racks up more and more original content, Hulu keeps adding great shows from the past. They’ve recently added both ER and NYPD Blue, and now it looks like Friday Night Lights has joined their lineup as well. The show, which ran from 2006 to 2011, focuses on the trials and tribulations of a high school football team. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.
Lost In Space is now streaming on Netflix, and it’s pretty good. Netflix is taking an unusual approach to this show, in that they’re still promoting it long after it dropped. Usually, Netflix tends to stop advertising their new shows after they debut. But they’ve kept at it with Lost In Space. Their latest bit of marketing is this video, in which the cast and crew discuss the friendship that grows between Will Robinson and the robot.
Speaking of Netflix – Sense8 fans were understandably upset when Netflix cancelled the series. Fan demand was so high that Netflix decided to give the show a proper send-off. Now, the series finale has an official date: June 8, per the poster above. The show, created by The Wachowskis and J. Michael Straczynski, focuses on eight strangers around the globe who “find themselves connected — first by a violent vision, then by their shared ability to connect with one another’s thoughts and actions, and finally by the urgent need to find out what happened and why.”
A24 doesn’t just make movies. They’ve moved into TV as well, and will now produce Moonbase 8, a comedy series from Fred Armisen, Jonathan Krisel, Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly. Armisen, Heidecker and Reilly will star as three lackluster astronauts living in NASA’s Moon Base Simulator, with hopes of going to the actual moon some day. ““Moonbase 8 is pure comic genius and we are thrilled to be a part of this show from the ground up,” said A24. “We can’t wait to introduce this fearless group of astronauts as they prepare to go where several people have gone before…but not as hilariously.” These are all very funny people, and there’s a lot you can do with this premise, so hopefully this turns out well.
Recent Oscar winner Allison Janney is joining Amazon’s Troupe Zero, a new dramedy that also stars Jim Gaffigan, per Deadline. Plot details aren’t known yet, but the show also stars Viola Davis, which means Troupe Zero will have one hell of a cast. Lucy Alibar, who wrote the script for Beasts of the Southern Wild, wrote the screenplay for the show.
Disney Channel is apparently making a live-action Kim Possible movie, and they’ve found their leads. Sadie Stanley will play Kim Possible, a seemingly ordinary teenager who also fights crime, and Sean Giambrone will play Kim’s sidekick Ron Stoppable. The original animated Kim Possible ran for 4 seasons on the Disney Channel. The new live-action film will be co-directed and co-produced by Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky. What a time to be alive.
The Path, Hulu’s cult drama starring Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan and Hugh Dancy, has been cancelled after three seasons. “While it’s sad that The Path is ending, I’m brimming with gratitude and pride,” creator Jessica Goldberg in a statement (via THR). “It was a gift to be able to tell challenging and emotional stories for three seasons in this very strange and unique world. The caliber of talent and passion everyone who worked on this show brought — from my partners Jason Katims and Michelle Lee, the execs at Hulu, the writers, actors, directors, designers and crew — was something to behold, and for which I’m very thankful. Thanks Hulu and Universal Television for taking a shot on this show, it was a life-changing experience.” I watched the first season of The Path, and enjoyed most of it. But it never felt like the type of show that I had to keep up with. Apparently other people felt that way too.
Animal Kingdom is about to begin its third season, and here’s the trailer to prove it. The show stars Ellen Barkin as “the matriarch of a Southern California family whose excessive lifestyle is fueled by their criminal activities, with Scott Speedman as her second in command.” The show is an adaptation of the Australian crime drama of the same name, starring Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce, James Frecheville, Luke Ford, Jacki Weaver, and Sullivan Stapleton. Animal Kingdom season 3 begins May 29, 2018 on TNT.

For four seasons now, the Golden State Warriors have been the NBA’s most dominant offense thanks to a high-octane system that promotes ball and player movement and, of course, three-pointers.
But it’s easy to forget that in 2014, when Steve Kerr became head coach, he was taking over a team that underwhelmed on offense and often played a stagnant, one-on-one system.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

An epidemic of severe and rapidly progressive black lung disease is emerging among coal miners in Appalachia. Case counts from just three clinics in the region reveal the highest disease levels that doctors have ever reported, according to a study published in JAMA this week.
Between January 2013 and February 2017, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health documented 416 coal miners with the condition. Prior to the discovery, researchers largely thought that black lung cases were a thing of the past. Diagnoses have been rare since the late 1990s
The clinics, run by Stone Mountain Health Services, would typically see five to seven cases each year, Ron Carson, who directs Stone Mountain’s black lung program told NPR. Now, the clinics see that many in two weeks, he said. And in the past year, they’ve diagnosed 154 cases.

After previous statements making it sound as if Lethal Weapon 5 was all but a done deal, director Richard Donner is now taking a few steps back and saying the potential sequel might be dead. Perhaps it’s for the best.
Recently, word broke that stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and director Richard Donner were all in talks to resurrect the too old for this shit Lethal Weapon franchise with Lethal Weapon 5, which would bring back Riggs and Murtaugh for one more adventure. Donner later reiterated that the film would almost certainly happen, sooner rather than later. Well, don’t break out the champagne just yet, Lethal Weapon sequel fans. Donner is now saying that the project has stalled out, and may very well be dead.
While appearing on the Maltin On Movies podcast (via ScreenRant), Donner revealed the title of the film (Lethal Finale), and then went on to say that negotiations have broken down, and problems behind-the-scenes may have killed the film for good:
“I’m ready to do 5. It’s called Lethal Finale. It’s very dark. And we were all set to go and now Warner Bros. is doing their old-fashioned tricks. Not Warner Bros., there’s this guy who runs the studio who’s great but they have these people in the legal department who do the negotiating in the most counter-productive way. They should be sent to a studio and work with the producers and directors and actors, and learn what makes a film, and then negotiate. But it’s just embarrassing.”
Donner added, “I wanted to end it on an emotional note, and I don’t think it’s gonna happen.”
Honestly, this is probably for the best. The first Lethal Weapon is great, and even Lethal Weapon 2 has its moments, but this franchise has run its course. On top of that, there’s so much toxicity surrounding star Mel Gibson that to bring him back as the goofy, lovable, wise-cracking character he played in this franchise would just seem wrong. On top of all that, Donner insisting that this entry was going to be “very dark” doesn’t inspire much confidence. Yes, the Lethal Weapon franchise had its fair share of dark moments, but this was a series that was loved for the humor it mixed in with all its violence – that crackling back-and-forth chemistry between Gibson and Glover is what made it work. To ignore that and make a “very dark” sequel seems kind of silly.
For now, it looks as if Lethal Weapon 5, AKA Lethal Finale, is dead. We’ll have to wait and see if that status changes anytime soon.
