When it comes to sport, Robinson Club has it covered with a range of activities that will keep all the family entertained. Surfing, sailing and stand-up paddle boarding were available at the resort’s 220-yard stretch of private beach.

Back on land we were encouraged to try our hands at archery, volleyball, darts, tennis – and my children refused to leave without having a whizz round the nearby go-karting track.

If the adrenaline-fuelled programme gets too much, adults can slink off to the WellFit Spa for massages and beauty treatments, or to find some inner peace at a yoga class. With so much to do we’d built up our appetites by lunch and again by the evening.

Six restaurants cater for all tastes, with the main dining area serving varied buffets and international cuisine overlooking the stunning terraced gardens.

Capturing Italy’s essence, there’s also a pizzeria complete with a wood-fired oven, a high-end beachside Trattoria and Vinothek bar, serving local wines from Salento and south Apulia. All week we could choose from a spectacular range of southern Italian dishes but for me the highlight was the freshly caught frutti di mare which included kingfish, lobster, swordfish and mussels.

Food is part of the entertainment at Robinson Club. Here the chefs cook to order in front of the guests – and they make it fun. One cook, noticeably skilled with his saute pan, reappeared one night as a dancing acrobat during an evening of circus tricks.

Climbing two black curtains, he had to be rescued by one of the clowns when he got his foot wedged halfway down, almost missing the finale, much to the amusement of my children, who howled with laughter.

He was very much the star of the show. A jack of all trades, general manager Mario, could often be found sprucing up the resort or demonstrating how to make pasta to guests. My two children were quick to notice the difference between the freshly made pasta, kneaded with care and the dried stuff we cook at home.

With so much on offer, there’s little reason to leave Robinson Club. But, keen to get a sense of the region’s long and varied past, we headed out to explore the surrounding area. Apulia was once a central hub in Greek and Roman times and during the Crusades was a strategic route between Europe and the Holy Land.

Small clusters of villages still speak Griko, an Italiot Greek dialect, that dates back to the early Middle Ages when waves of migrants settled here while fleeing from Ottoman invasion. A 40-minute drive north to Lecce, which is known here as the “Florence of the South”, the buildings, of soft yellow limestone, are an eclectic mix of elegant Norman, refined Renaissance and explosive Baroque styles.

Contrasting again are the Mussolini fascist-era apartment buildings, whose huge, rational blocks tower above the sunken, second-century, Roman amphitheatre. The city’s palazzos and churches are intricately carved with olives and artichokes, celebrating the area’s rich agricultural heritage.

Apulia produces almost half of Italy’s olive oil, with some groves boasting gnarled trees more than 1,000 years old. Grapes also decorate pillars and balustrades, highlighting the region’s wine-making expertise.

It is famed for its full-bodied red, Negroamaro. With reminders of food almost everywhere, we made a quick stop for lunch.

My 14-year old was delighted with his “little chicken”, an extraordinary dish made with slices of chicken and peas filled into a miniature pastry chicken mould. A hearty meal but nonetheless followed with homemade Italian gelato.

En route back to Robinson Club we stopped at Otranto, a surprisingly charming resort perched on the south easterly tip of Italy. The quaint town has preserved its winding streets with whitewashed houses, like precious pearls against the vast backdrop of the sea.

A treasure trove of historic buildings, its coastline was fortified after 1480, when 800 Christians were slaughtered after being faced with an invading Turkish ultimatum: “Renounce Christ or lose your head.”

The Byzantine-style Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata, an 11th-century cathedral with a priceless 650-square yard floor mosaic as its centrepiece, still exhibits the skulls and bones of these martyrs in a large glass cabinet. The tragic invasion led to the militarisation of this region during the 15th century.

Walls fortified with ramparts surround the old part of town and watchtowers punctuate the surrounding landscape, at almost every nautical mile, to warn locals of invaders with innovative techniques: mirrors during sunlight or fire at night.

At the harbour, we climbed Torre Matta, one of the town’s formidable towers. With sweeping views over the Adriatic, on the horizon we could just pick out the rolling hills of Albania and 70 miles west, though we couldn’t see it, was Corfu.

Further south, we visited the town between two seas, Santa Maria di Leuca – on the southernmost tip of Italy’s Salento peninsula – where, beneath a white 19th-century lighthouse, the Ionian and Adriatic mingle to become one.

It’s hardly surprising the Romans referred to this dramatically sculpted coastline as “de Finibus Terrae”, the end of the Earth. Beneath us the limestone cliff edge is peppered with grottos where seagulls and pigeons come to perch among fossils, apparently dating back to palaeolithic times.

We explored these grottos, on the stiletto heel of Italy’s boot, the next day. Diving into one blowing cave, we surfaced under its roof with light pouring through its cracks to highlight a shoal of big, black fish swimming beneath us – much to the children’s exhilaration.

As we pack for home, I’m already planning our return. Capturing the essence of Italy, it seems impossible to sate our appetites for more of what Robinsons Club and Apulia has to offer.

Part of the fun of the Marvel movies is they introduce us to characters we might not have been aware of if we didn’t grow up on the comics.

For many, the appearance of Korg in “Thor: Ragnarok” (currently playing in theaters) will be a delightful introduction.

Korg is a rock giant creature who befriends Thor (Chris Hemsworth) when the God of Thunder is on the planet Sakaar, and is forced by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) to take part in a gladiator-like battle and face his champion (which turns out to be the Hulk).

Korg, who first appeared in the “Planet Hulk” story within an “The Incredible Hulk” comic in 2006, is depicted in the movie as a gentle giant with a soft voice. He brings some of the best comedic moments of the movie and later fights alongside Thor in the movie’s conclusion.

korg thor ragnarokMarvelThe character is a scene-stealer, and credit has to go to the person who decided to take it on for the movie, “Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi.

However, Waititi admits he didn’t decide to voice Korg because he had some grand idea of how to make the character stand out. It really all happened by chance.

“I knew I was going to play something in the film, because I always put myself in my films, but I didn’t know what,” Waititi told Business Insider. “He was one of the few minor characters that hadn’t been cast yet so I decided to do that one.”

Figuring the role of Korg was small enough that doing the motion-capture on set for the character, and voicing it, wouldn’t be much added work to his already busy schedule as the director, he claimed Korg and moved on to more pressing matters.

“We didn’t end up doing a huge amount of it until much later in prep,” Waititi said. “There were many other story points we had to worry about. We knew this character was going to be in at least one or two scenes as kind of an information giver.”

But when Waititi began coming up with the voice for Korg in read-throughs, he and star Chris Hemsworth couldn’t stop coming up with jokes for him.

TaikaWaititiMavelfinalMarvel“We would start getting into those scenes and I would play with the voice and we thought wouldn’t it be funny if this big hulking rock guy had this very delicate voice?” Waititi said. “I kind of based it on people I remember from home. So it’s a strange combination of a big guy with a gentle-natured presence. Chris was loving that when we started doing those scenes, and we started shooting some stuff.”

Waititi said Marvel loved Korg too, so what started as a character that was in there just for exposition turned into Marvel’s newest sensation.

“We injected him into more and more scenes and before you know it he was all over the movie,” Waititi said.

Always feeling the pulse of its fans, Marvel can already tell audiences are in love with the big guy — along with his sidekick Miek — and the studio has hinted that there will be more from the bashing duo.

“We have plans for Korg and Miek,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege told Fandango. “When and where we’ll have to wait and see, but we, like the audience now that they’ve seen them, can’t get enough.”

Waititi better rest up.

The plan, as described over a taco salad at a Capitol Hill lunch spot, is a little nuts. A third-term Democratic congressman from Maryland readily acknowledges that “no one knows who I am.” So over the next two-plus years he’s going to dish out his bipartisan problem-solving pitch at 400 events in Iowa and New Hampshire. By then, he’ll have an organizational head start, and, given this wacky era in American politics, who are we to tell John Delaney he can’t be president?

Delaney is the first declared Democratic candidate for 2020, but why-not-me-ism abounds as Democrats could end up surpassing the 17 major Republican presidential candidates in 2016. (Who’s ready for more two-tiered primary debates?) In the early mix are national brand names including Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren; senators like Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris; governors like Andrew Cuomo and Terry McAuliffe; and political outsiders like Howard Schultz and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.

This cycle is breeding a new group of people who might have never considered running for president before.

And then there are the fresh-faced politicians who have never won a statewide race but are turning up in early presidential primary states: Delaney, Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, Rep. Eric Swalwell of California and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Keep in mind the only president to have been elected from the House was James Garfield in 1880. A mayor has never pulled it off.

But Donald Trump shattered all kinds of notions about the proper background for a president. So too did first-term senator Barack Obama’s 2008 triumph over the experienced front-runner Hillary Clinton. “Maybe it is the combination of Obama and Trump — two presidents in a row with little or no high-level political experience,” says Larry Sabato, the head of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. “The older ones remember Jimmy Carter in 1976,” Sabato adds. “It was a very large field, and ‘Jimmy Who?’ beat loads of well-known candidates.”

For Democrats, 2020 presents a rare race without an obvious front-runner. Biden, Sanders and Warren lead early polls based mostly on name identification. The little-known new contenders find themselves energized by the Trump era and believe they can offer a different direction than party leaders who steered Democrats into devastating losses. Ryan, 44, has long represented a Rust Belt congressional district full of the kind of white working-class Trump voters who swung the election. Garcetti, 46, has Jewish and Latino heritage and hiked Los Angeles’ minimum wage to $ 15 per hour. Moulton, 38, is a decorated Marine veteran who served four tours in Iraq. In a recent podcast with former Obama aide David Axelrod, Moulton noted he’s “a hell of a lot more prepared [for the White House] than the current occupant.”

Adrienne Elrod, a Democratic operative who worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, says the party should welcome any and all aspirants to run. “I do think this cycle is already, frankly, breeding sort of a new group of people who might have never considered running for president before,” Elrod says. “You are seeing so many people who are extremely fearful of Donald Trump and what, God forbid, a second term of Donald Trump might accomplish.”

But there’s a reason no mayors and just one congressman have made the leap: They represent relatively narrow constituencies. Los Angeles has little in common with Iowa. Yet big-city mayors must “learn how to govern and work across the aisle,” Elrod says. “You can’t afford to let partisan politics get in the way.” And a presidential run is a huge leap for just about anyone — whether a governor, a mayor or a reality TV star. Los Angeles, by the way, has more people than 23 states.

Delaney says senators crowd into presidential fields more than House members because they often are not running for reelection, while House members are always on the ballot. (Among the gaggle of Senate Democrats kicking the tires in early primary states, New Jersey’s Booker and Oregon’s Jeff Merkley are up for re-election in 2020.)

Delaney, 54, is not running for re-election, giving him the freedom to roam Iowa and New Hampshire as he pleases. He’s touting a ranking as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress, representing a swing district that includes both Washington suburbs and rural, mountainous western Maryland. A co-founder of a commercial lending firm who ranks as one of the wealthiest members of Congress, Delaney expects an eventual cooling of the anti-Trump resistance frenzy. By 2019, perhaps, primary voters will be drawn to Delaney’s message of civility and wonkery about adapting to the artificial intelligence economy. “I wouldn’t want to have the election today,” he says. “Let’s put it that way.”
