Falling in love for the first time is a timeless story. Whether between a man and a woman, two women, two men, or those who fall outside of the gender binary, love is something that is universal. It transcends binaries and cultural barriers while honored around the world in unique ways. No matter the hardships we face, love will always find a way to prevail.

This prevailing idea is one that hangs over “This Place,” V.T. Nayani’s feature directorial debut about two young women falling in love amidst personal turmoil. With the complex racial dynamics of Toronto providing a backdrop for this young sapphic love story, she creates a debut that shows ample promise. It is a story about how love binds us, no matter our blood or life stories, and why that love will always be important no matter what. Arguably, this is a message we need now more than ever.

What’s Your Story?

At the center of “This Place” are Kawenniióhstha (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs) and Malai (Priya Guns), two young women struggling with different complications about their fathers. Kawenniióhstha is searching for her father, an Iranian man who left her Mohawk mother for reasons she wants to find out. Meanwhile, Malai finds out that her father, an immigrant from Sri Lanka, is sick and likely doesn’t have a lot of time left on this earth. Despite the hardships the two of them are individually facing, they slowly find solace in each other thanks to a chance encounter at the laundromat and a missing notebook.

The scenes that the two share together are teeming with the awkwardness of first love. The way that Kawenniióhstha and Malai interact with each other feels authentic in a way that only young lesbians and sapphic women can truly feel – there is something there that makes you feel like you’re falling in love, but it’s hampered by the possibility that the woman next to you won’t feel the same. This is a palpable feeling that carries the rest of the film in an effective manner, as it helps to make up for the lack of scenes involving actual intimacy.

I Wanna Be There For You

Nayani is no stranger to the filmmaking artform, having previously directed some documentaries and short films. However, “This Place” does mark her feature film debut and the makings of a great feature director are already present. The same goes for Jacobs, who has already proven herself as an actress in various American television shows, such as “Reservation Dogs.” Despite this, she particularly shines here in a performance that carefully unravels in complexity as the film progresses. Having her alongside Guns, who comes into her own as a performer in the third act, is a real treat to watch. The score, composed by Kalaisan Kalaichelvan, is arguably one of the most gorgeous and appropriately fitting of the year.

“This Place” is not a perfect movie, and it can be somewhat obvious at times in its script and pacing that it is a feature debut. Some of the dialogue feels a bit too typical for a story like this (Malai quips to her brother in an emotional moment about how they need therapy), and the slow burn between Kawenniióhstha and Malai can feel just a little bit too slow at times. Despite these details, however, the seeds of a great movie are more than present. The specific cultural experiences depicted throughout the film might not be universal, but the ultimate message of love, forgiveness, and understanding certainly is.

But the “psycho lesbian” plotline of last night’s episode of the BBC show, which saw killer Villanelle in a passionate clinch with a woman, was a step too far for some viewers.

Journalist and feminist campaigner Julie Bindel said it was an example of lesbian characters depicted as “coldblooded killers, weirdos… and oversexed maniacs”.

But she added: “Full disclosure: I love the BBC drama Killing Eve.”

Last night’s third episode divided the lesbian community. One said the show was the “gay revolution that the spy genre needs”.

But another said: “I’m disappointed in its decision to link its explicit homoeroticism with psychopathy and mental instability.”

Villanelle, played by Jodie Comer, has an appetite for graphically killing her victims, who die slowly before her eyes as she watches.

Last night a Chinese diplomat was gassed in a specialist sado-masochistic sex clinic.

Villanelle, whose nemesis is British spy Eve, played by Sandra Oh, also pursues sex in a predatory fashion.

Comer, 25, has described her character as “crazy” and screenwriter Phoebe WallerBridge said she was a “psychopathic female assassin”.

“I think what drives Villanelle is her freedom,” said Liverpoolborn Comer.

“She lives in Paris in this amazing apartment and she gets a kick from doing these kills – it excites her and gives her purpose. She does her kills, she gets her money, she spends it on what she likes and she has no one around her to take that from her or tell her what to do. She has very little remorse and she’s cool with that.”

Waller-Bridge said: “This is a really challenging character. Obviously she’s a psychopath, so ‘how do you make people care about a psychopath?’ is the question that kept coming up early on – and the answer is to cast Jodie Comer!”

The show, originally commissioned by BBC America, has now been given the green light for a second series.

The Swansea-born actress, 48, stars as Griselda Blanco, a ruthless drug baroness who ruled the Miami narcotics trade during the 1970s and early 1980s, in Cocaine Godmother.

In the TV biopic, Catherine’s character begins a steamy affair with her lover Carolina, locking lips with the blonde while wearing a silk chemise. 

In one scene Carolina, played by Norwegian actress Jenny Pellicer, is left with just a scrap of material to cover her modesty. 

In another, Catherine, who has two teenaged children with her husband Michael Douglas, 73, is seen seducing on-screen husband Alberto Bravo, played by Juan Pablo Espinosa.

Despite her marriage, Blanco’s lover moved into the family home and the couple continued their affair for years before Carolina died of a drugs overdose. 

Blanco imported drugs from Colombia to the US through Miami and killed anyone who stood in her way – including Bravo and another husband, Dario Sepulveda (played by Raul Mendez). 

The film, which premiered on the US Lifetime channel at the weekend, shows how Blanco got her nickname “La Madrina”, the black widow, and follows her hedonistic life. 

After terrorising Miami and selling cocaine for Pablo Escobar’s cartel, she was arrested in 1985.

She served 10 years in a US prison before being deported to Colombia. 

Blanco moved back to her home town of Medellin where she lived until 2012, when she was killed in a drive-by shooting. 

Cocaine Godmother will be screened on a date to be confirmed on the UK Lifetime channel available to subscribers on Sky and Virgin Media.

The show looks at the rise of the porn industry in 1970s New York and naturally features a wealth of saucy sex scenes. 

In one such erotic scene, Candy dons a blonde wig and locks lips with another woman while revealing her bare breasts. 

She is seen kneeling on the floor while staring up at two naked men before partaking in a lesbian scene with a fellow porn star. 

The pair writhe around on a bed, eventually stripping each other naked for the adult film. 

Maggie, 39, recently spoke out about her risqué new role to Time Out, explaining: “She gets involved in the beginnings of porn in someone’s basement. 

“And even though there’s two naked guys and another naked woman and they’re filming sex, that’s incidental to her.”

“What’s exciting for her is the lighting, the idea of looking at sex through a lens. It’s the birth of an artist. Once that gets woken up in her, it can’t go back to sleep.”

James Franco, 39, directed some of Maggie’s scenes as well as starring in the new show. 

He recently praised his co-star’s performance to Men’s Health, adding: “[Maggie] is fearless and she really led the charge with how she handled the sex scenes and how she handled herself, and really set the template for everyone else.”

The Deuce debuts on Sky Atlantic on 26 September at 9pm.

After a Christian conservative judge denied two requests by a lesbian mother to have himself recused from her divorce case for his religious beliefs, but she refused to give up and appealed to a higher state court.

Alabama native Tiara Brooke Lycans, who is divorcing her husband Zachary Thomas Lycans, has twice unsuccessfully filed motions this year asking trial judge Shaunathan C. Bell of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court to recuse himself from the case. Bell declined both of the requests.

This led Brooke Lycans to pursue petitioning the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, which on Thursday also denied her request, according to Birmingham News.

Lycans made the argument that Bell’s “publicly expressed belief that homosexual relationships and marriages are contrary to God’s law” may have an influence on the decision he makes when it comes to the custody of her daughter.

In the request, Lycans has stated that Bell has been a preacher at a fundamentalist church and continued to preach even as he assumed office as a judge. It is listed in the judge’s campaign materials that he is a political “conservative,” and his religious beliefs are listed as “Baptist,” Al reported.

The appeals court defended the decision to deny the request by saying that Judge Bell, in his initial ruling in Lycan’s case, granted joint physical custody alternating weekly, to her and her husband. The court also mentioned that Bell had ruled the same way with two other cases involving lesbian mothers in the past.

Bell was sworn in as a judge to the Circuit Court in 2013, and also serves as a pastor at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Alabama. During his swearing-in ceremony, scriptures from the Bible were read aloud.

The acclaimed actress teams up with Sofia Boutella for the sex sequence, which has been teased in the film’s trailers.

“I just loved it,” she told Variety. “For so many reasons: My frustration of how that community is represented in cinema, or lack thereof. And also, it made perfect sense. 

“It just suited her. It just felt there was a way through that relationship and the fact that it was a same-sex relationship to show a woman not having to fall in love, which is one of those female tropes. 

“‘It’s a woman; she better fall in love—otherwise, she’s a w***e!’”

Theron, it is noted, developed that aspect of the story with writer Kurt Johnstad, something she is very pleased with.

“It’s one of my most proudest parts of the development, when we came up with that,” she admitted. 

“And then finding Sofia, that was a slam dunk. There’s something about her that’s so broken and vulnerable. It works.”

Earlier this week, Theron spoke less favourably about another of her movies.

Aeon Flux was a big flop in 2005, but she doesn’t sound too cut-up by it now.

“I really loved [director] Karyn Kusama’s movie [Girlfight],” she reasoned. 

“So I threw myself into that with the belief that she’s a great filmmaker.

“And then we f**ked it all up. I just don’t think we really knew how to execute it.”

Atomic Blonde is out on August 9.

JAY-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, came out as lesbian in an appearance on the song “Smile” from her son’s new album, “4:44.” 

On the song, Jay and his mother both candidly address her sexuality for the first time in public, according to The Huffington Post. 

“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian,” Jay-Z raps on the track, which samples Stevie Wonder’s 1976 song “Love’s In Need of Love Today.”

“Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate / Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” he continues. “Cried tears of joy when you fell in love / Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her.”

Gloria Carter herself appears on a spoken-word outro to the song.

“Living in the shadow / Can you imagine what kind of life it is to live?” Carter asks. 

“The world is changing and they say it’s time to be free / But you live with the fear of just being me,” she continues. “Living in the shadow feels like the safe place to be / No harm for them, no harm for me / But life is short, and it’s time to be free / Love who you love, because life isn’t guaranteed.”

Jay has previously spoken out in support of the LGBTQ community, including in a 2012 CNN interview.

“I’ve always thought [not allowing same-sex marriages] was still holding the country back,” Jay-Z told CNN. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple.”

Confidently out as a lesbian, funny and quick-witted Deborah has experienced deep loss in her personal life as a direct result of super “heroics.” She’s the one who calls people on their BS and has no fear of putting her opinions out there.

Tracy and Pete Akoun suffered repeated miscarriages and fell victim to a con-woman as they battled to fulfil their dream.

Disappointed but undeterred, the couple joined a Facebook group for surrogacy and met Tricia Hunt and Kate Fruin-Smith, two lesbians who each have their own partners and children and live in different parts of the UK.

The group came together to create Nyobi and Kenya who were born last summer exactly one month apart.

She says she then suffered “repeated losses” after that.

She added: “I saw a programme on This Morning about surrogacy and Pete went away and researched it and asked how I felt about it.

“The couple created a profile on a surrogacy website but were duped by a conwoman into handing over £400.

“They were overjoyed to meet Ms Fruin-Smith, but she suggested she only wanted to carry one baby.

The couple wanted two children and so approached Mrs Hunt, who was willing to carry a second child.

Both women fell pregnant – using syringes and a Mooncup to carry the sperm – in Autumn 2015.

Mrs Akoun, an assistant manager in a care home, said: “We were absolutely ecstatic. I don’t think Pete took it on board at all.

“I think he was worried that something might go wrong.”At the end of the day, you worry until that baby is in your arms. We took each day at a time.”

Nyobi was born to Mrs Hunt two weeks early on June 4, 2016, at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester.

Kenya was born to Ms Fruin-Smith a month later, on July 4, at Rotherham General Hospital in South Yorkshire.

Under UK law, the surrogate is the child’s legal parent until the intended parents are granted a parental order six weeks after the birth.

Mrs Akoun said she never “thought for one minute” that either woman would not be able to give up the baby.

“The relationship is like family and we’re still in touch – we visit each other,” she added.

“Tricia only lives 20 minutes away, they come around for dinner and we go round to theirs every three or four months.

“I don’t have any jealousy or insecurity when they’re here. To both girls, I am their mum.

“They’ve only ever known me. I did skin to skin when Nyobi was born – the only smell she knew was from me.”

Mr Akoun, 26, who came to the UK from Nigeria in 2009, has also never doubted that the babies would be handed over.

The full-time dad said his daughters are delightful, adding: “They eat well, they sleep well, they play.

“Nyobi is now nine months and Kenya is eight months. When the time is right, we’ll tell them about how they were conceived.”

Mr Akoun was tested for sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) before entering into the surrogacy arrangement.

Mrs Akoun, who has an 18-year-old daughter, Breunne, from a previous relationship, said: “All you ever hear is the negative side of surrogacy. But for every negative story there are 40 or 50 positive ones.

“They are your children from the word go.”

Mrs Hunt, 36, a dog groomer from Chichester, has two sons, Joe, 13, and Bradley, six, from a previous heterosexual relationship.

She also has twin girls, Katie and Jessica, aged two, from her marriage to partner Cathy, 31.

Cathy conceived the girls using donor sperm.Mrs Hunt said: “We’d had help to conceive the girls and we thought we’d try and help somebody else out – it was our way of giving back.

“I wanted to give somebody else what I had.”Mrs Hunt said there is “always an affection” for the surrogate baby and she would often chat to Nyobi while pregnant.

“But when you meet the intended mother and get to know the couple you’re going to work with, you get involved in their emotion,” she said.

“You see what they have been through, you see that emotion, it’s raw.”You get invested and you’re desperate to get pregnant for them.

“I remember at the 20-week scan that Pete cried. It’s almost like a drug. I couldn’t wait for them to hold their baby.”

Ms Fruin-Smith, 37, from Rotherham, is in a civil partnership with Rebecca, 28, a stay-at-home mother.

She works in a children’s nursery and has four children from a previous heterosexual relationship; Daniel, 16, Heather, 15, Zoe, 11, and Thomas, nine.

She also has Lily, aged three, with Rebecca, who was conceived with donor sperm.

She said: “When I met Rebecca, we started looking into sperm donation.

“We decided that if we were going to accept help, we could help others. I spent about four or five years to think about it and look into the legalities of it all.”

Ms Fruin-Smith gave birth to a girl, now aged three, for another couple before agreeing to carry for Mr and Mrs Akoun.

She said: “I had no doubts whatsoever about handing the baby over.”The child was conceived to never be my baby – all through the pregnancy it was their child. Tracy is a very emotional person so it was amazing to see her light up at the scans.

“It’s so rewarding to know you can make that much difference in somebody’s life.”

Sam Everingham, the father of two girls born through surrogacy and founder of Families Through Surrogacy, a not-for-profit organisation, said: “We are seeing a rise in couples trying to access surrogacy in the UK.”

Louisa Ghevaert, a surrogacy, fertility and family law expert, added: “The law relating to surrogacy in the UK is outdated.

“Reform is needed to remove legal uncertainty for intended parents and surrogate-born children.”
