You no longer have to fire up Google Photos if you want to use Lens searches on your iPhone. Google has rolled the AI-based feature into its iOS search app, putting it in a more logical place than your image library. Tap the Lens icon in the search bar and you can point your device camera at books, bottles, pets and various other objects to get more answers about what you see. You can tell Lens to look at your existing images or turn on the flash when it’s too dark.

The feature is starting to deploy in earnest as we write this, so don’t despair if you don’t see it right away. Whenever you get Lens, it’ll likely be welcome if you’ve wanted availability that’s more comparable to what you find on Android.

If you’re anything like me and the thought that you’ve accidentally Instagram Live-d your makeup routine induces sudden nausea, than making a living by live-streaming is probably not one of your career goals. But for the subjects of Hao Wu‘s documentary People’s Republic of Desire, live-streaming isn’t just how they make their living, it’s how they make up their sense of self. Though I am unable to get past my inhibitions, I will gladly watch other people sit on their couch and answer the questions that roll in on the screen. It’s become increasingly easier to check out of your life for a moment and check in to someone else’s. But the line between voyeurism and escapism is a thin one that is barely toed by the subjects in Wu’s documentary.

People’s Republic narrows its focus to two young hosts on a live-streaming social network called YY. There is no comparable equivalent in North America (Sean Parker’s Airtime never really broke through), but in China it is frequented by over 300 million users and hosts can make upwards of $ 20,000 a month if they tap into the right demographic. From the glimpses we get of it in the documentary, karaoke and comedic bits are the main forms of entertainment on the site.

A lot of the comedy and basic allure of the social network gets lost in translation. For instance, former nurse and now full-time YY host Shen Man has a pleasant voice, but doesn’t appear to have the kind of charisma or vocal ability to suggest a star in the making. And Big Li, with his boisterous rants and playful bits, comes across a man-child whose appeal lies in his ordinariness. In fact, many of his devoted fans are self-described diaosi, a label that denotes working class “losers.” These diaosi worship Shen Man and Big Li and tip them with what little money they have in the hopes of getting a shout-out live on air. Unlike a gambling habit that partially hinges on the hope that you will make a fortune, these super-fans are essentially donating money they don’t have in order to feel apart of an experience they’ve given up hope of achieving. It’s a shame then, that Wu doesn’t devote more time to these loyal blue-collar fans.

But what he does focus on is worthy of attention and, well, alarm. The filmmaker does not present technology as an equalizing tool that permits poor, hard-working people to achieve fortune and fame, or even modest income. Rather, he takes the Black Mirror approach. There are numerous snippets in which fans and hosts confess to feeling “disconnected” and “lonely,” which feels too on the nose at times. But that’s mostly due to the fact that they feel like soundbites, rather than deeper explorations of their experiences online. Later, disturbing anecdotes about hosts live-streaming their suicide attempts and subsequent recovery end up feeling tacked on for shock value. But the film is certainly ambitious in its scope as it tries to piece together the sometimes odious world of live-streaming.

The main thrust of Wu’s film is the marketplace at the centre of YY. Unlike Twitter and Instagram celebrities, the follower/host relationship is markedly transactional. For many, that exchange is the main attraction. Many diaosi describe their marvel at watching big donors give away hundreds of thousands, if not millions in one go. And those big donors love feeling in control of the hosts they give to. The documentary doesn’t get too specific, but the donors seem to suggest that they can make certain demands of the hosts they give to, some of them sexual. Indeed, YY bears a lot of resemblance to camming, but the sex happens off-screen.

The film’s last third is centered around an annual tournament for the hosts. Whomever can accumulate the most money and votes wins. Wu is keen to point out (as he does many times) that hosts can lose money of their own. But they continue to buy their own votes, some of them participating in the tournament year after year, out of desperation. If you want to win, you have to put your skin in the game – sometimes literally.

Pointing out the blurred lines between offline and online has become as cliche as pointing out the blurred lines between fiction and documentary. What is real and what is performed can seem irrelevant when both get equal attention. But when Wu begins the film in a training camp for live-streaming hosts, why does he leave so suddenly? Why can’t we share in what these wannabe hosts learn about presenting themselves to the webcam?

You’re not completely hosed if you missed your chance to attend San Diego Comic-Con… if you’re willing to dabble in some augmented reality art. Snap and DC Comics have launched a DC Super Heroes Challenge that asks you to create a DC-themed Lens championing Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman for the chance to win an expenses-paid trip to San Diego Comic-Con in July. You don’t have to start completely from scratch, thankfully, as there’s a load of DC assets to bring into Lens Studio.

The Challenge is open to Americans, and you have until the night of July 8th to submit your AR masterwork.

This is Snap’s first Lens Studio Challenge involving a big-name brand, and it hints at how the company might spur you to create Lenses in the future — if your artistic muse isn’t enough to make it happen, a tangible reward might. No, Snapchat isn’t about claim a decisive victory over Facebook in the AR space as a result of this contest. However, it might give you a reason to keep returning to Snapchat (whether or not you’re a creator) when you’d otherwise drift away.

Google may have teased us with exciting new AR features for the Maps app, but it’s not forgetting to make its Lens camera more useful, either. Since its launch last year, Lens has rolled out to iOS and gained a few skills, like identifying cat and dog breeds. At its I/O developer conference today, Google announced three new features for Lens — Smart Text Selection, Style Match and Real-time results. After checking it out here at the show, I’m most intrigued by the text-recognition tools, which actually seem useful.

What Smart Text Selection does is scan words in documents around you and let you interact with them in your phone. For example, point your camera at a menu, tap on it and see explanations for dishes you aren’t familiar with. During our demo, a Google rep used Lens to snap a picture of a book’s inside cover, and highlighted the text in the photo. Just like you’d expect with words in a messaging or editing app, a menu popped up to let you copy your selection to paste elsewhere. I was already impressed by the fact that this even worked, but was even more pleased when I saw that the words in the picture didn’t have to be perfectly aligned for Lens to recognize them.

Style Match is a more familiar tool that’s similar to Amazon’s Firefly, or AR View, or any number of similar visual shopping features. Scan a blouse or a quirky lamp that you like, and a blue dot appears on top of it. Tap that, and Lens will display a list of items it’s found that are similar to it in style. A couple times during our demo, Lens even found the exact clothes or shoes we scanned, and showed them as the first in a list of other similar products. Lens didn’t simply return clones of the floral shirts and brown shoes that Google placed in its booth, either. There was a nice variety of stuff that resembled the original, but differed in small ways. This is great for people who are looking for more options but don’t want to buy, say, five of the same shirt.

Finally, there’s “real-time results,” which isn’t so much a new feature as it is a general interface improvement. Instead of having to press a shutter button and wait for Google Lens to process the image, the app will be able to overlay information on objects in the viewfinder in real time. So as a Google rep swept his camera across the room, I saw dots bubble up on the screen, indicating that Lens was finding items. In a couple of seconds, blue tags appeared on items like a blouse or a book, meaning more information for those things was available. On the LG G7 that our rep used for the demo, this all happened quickly, with only minor noticeable delays as Lens analyzed the scene.

Speaking of, the G7 is one of the first phones to get Google Lens built into its native camera app, alongside the Pixel phones. More handsets from brands like Sony will get this baked in later this year as well. That’s a nice convenience and saves users the hassle of having to install a new app that would take up space in an apps list.

All told, I’m most excited by the coming text integration feature. It seems to be the most useful, and I can see myself taking photos of leaflets, poems, press releases, specs sheets or contracts and pasting the words into my note-taking apps. We’ll have to wait till the updates roll out “in the next few weeks” to know how effective they’ll be outside of a demo situation, but until then I’m cautiously hopeful that the new features will make for a much more useful Lens.
