Lenovo is giving the foldable PC a second shot. The upcoming Lenovo 16-inch ThinkPad X1 Fold announced today attempts to improve on 2020’s ThinkPad X1 Fold with a bigger screen, more powerful specs, and an operating system better suited for multitasking across the bendable OLED touchscreen.

I tried out the Windows 11 PC ahead of its expected November launch, and it improved upon the weaknesses of the original 13.3-inch ThinkPad X1 Fold.

The new Fold folds up more securely than before, its OS is more accommodating to dual screens, and enhanced specs give it greater potential for business use. Lenovo may finally have the pieces needed for a desirable, natural-feeling foldable Windows experience.

Greetings, Arsians! Courtesy of our friends at TechBargains, the Dealmaster is back with another round of deals to share. Today’s list is headlined by a discount on the current-gen model of Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon notebook, which is down to $ 1,063 at Lenovo with the code “THINKPRESDAY.” And yes, the coupon has to be in ALL CAPS for it to work.

Lenovo’s on-site prices tend to fluctuate wildly, but the X1 Carbon typically goes for around $ 1,400, making this good for a roughly $ 340 discount. As of this writing, Lenovo is telling users to apply the code “THINKPRESIDENT,” but the code above actually cuts the price by another $ 75 or so. Why? No clue, but the Dealmaster isn’t complaining.

As for the X1 Carbon itself, it’s great. You can check out our review for a full rundown, but in short, we said it ticked all the necessary boxes for a high-end Ultrabook. It’s not a convertible, and there’s no 4K option, but it performs well, gets good battery life, and has the necessary Thunderbolt 3 ports without ditching legacy ports like USB-A or HDMI. It’s sufficiently thin (0.63 inches), light (2.49 pounds), and well-made, and its keyboard, as is typical of a ThinkPad, is excellent. Its big downside is that it’s relatively expensive, but that’s obviously negated here.

If you need more power than the typical 13-inch Ultrabook can handle, Lenovo’s new mobile workstations might be the answer.

The ThinkPad P1 looks like a 15-inch Ultrabook, 0.7 inches thick and under 4lbs, but inside, it has a mobile Xeon processor, up to 64GB of ECC RAM, and as much as 4TB SSD storage. A discrete GPU, up to the Nvidia Quadro P2000, drives that display (either 1920×1080 300 nit, 72 percent of NTSC, or 3840×2160 400 nit 10-bit-per-channel supporting 100 percent of the Adobe color gamut and touch). It has a good selection of ports—two Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C, two USB 3.1 generation 1 Type A, HDMI 2.0, mini-gigabit Ethernet (with a little dongle), 3.5mm headset, and microSD, and it has 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5. The battery is a substantial 80WHr.

Daydream, Google’s foray into the crowded virtual reality space, has hitherto used headsets that are simply holsters, a way of holding an Android smartphone right in front of your face so that it works as a pair of VR goggles. This makes Daydream’s cost of entry cheap—the headset can be a completely passive device with no electronics of its own—which is important for making VR accessible.

Lenovo’s $ 400 Mirage Solo, out today, is the first standalone Daydream headset. You don’t slot a phone into this one—the device has all the hardware it needs to provide a standalone VR experience. The hardware inside the headset is certainly phone-like; it has a Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. It also contains phone-like sensors, with a gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer. But because it’s built for VR, it has a couple of extra sensors: a pair of world-facing cameras that Google calls “WorldSense.”

WorldSense is Google’s inside-out, six-degree-of-freedom motion-tracking solution. As with similar systems in Microsoft’s HoloLens and the various Windows Mixed Reality headsets, the system combines data from the device’s internal sensors with data from the cameras to track the headset’s position and orientation in space, without requiring the fixed-base stations that are used on the first-generation HTC Vive and Oculus Rift devices.

Lenovo will soon release its VR Classroom setup, which will let teachers guide their students through virtual field trips. Each kit comes with the first standalone Daydream VR headset, Lenovo’s Mirage Solo with Daydream, which arrives preloaded with over 700 Google Expeditions VR field trips as well as three exclusive Jane Goodall “Wild Immersion” videos. The VR field trips allow classrooms to explore the world and in order to help facilitate the learning experience, the videos include stopping points during which teachers can add more information or answer questions as well as talking points for teachers. Additionally, online lesson plans will be available to assist teachers in getting the most from the kit.

Along with headsets and software, the kit comes with a Lenovo Tab 4 PLUS 10-inch tablet, a Ruckus R510 commercial router, a cart or case depending on the size of the kit being purchased, training videos, expert consultation and monthly webinars.

Google Expeditions got started in 2015 as a limited-release learning platform, and it saw a wide release the following year. Last year, Google debuted a solo mode that made it easier for people to experience Expeditions outside of a classroom setting.

Lenovo’s VR Classroom will be available this April in the US and the fall for Canada. There are three kit tiers — a three-student pack, a 10-student pack and a 24-student pack — with the lowest tier starting at $ 2,899.

Google has its own family of smart speakers with its Assistant built in, but the first Assistant device with a display is apparently coming from Lenovo. At CES, Lenovo announced the Lenovo Smart Display, a slab-like gizmo dominated by a touchscreen that houses the Google Assistant. Much like Amazon’s Echo Show with built-in Alexa, the Smart Display uses Google’s digital assistant to provide weather, traffic, and news updates, connect to smart home devices, and perform screen-dependent tasks like video chats and YouTube streaming.

Lenovo made 8-inch and a 10-inch model of the Smart Display, with the main differences between them being screen resolution and color. The smaller device has an 8-inch, HD touchscreen while the larger device has a 10-inch, FHD touchscreen. The 8-inch Smart Display comes in a light-gray color scheme, while the 10-inch model is mostly white with a bamboo-colored back panel.

Lenovo’s latest high-end Yoga convertible is here. The Yoga 920 improves on the 910 in design, while also incorporating some internal upgrades. The 920’s design looks nearly identical to that of the 910, but it now measures 13.9mm thick and weighs 3.02 pounds. That makes it ever so slightly lighter and thinner than the 910, but otherwise it has a lot of the same external features: a 13.9-inch 4K IPS touchscreen that’s compatible with the optional Active Pen, that signature Lenovo watchband hinge that allows it to lie flat when opened at a 180-degree angle, and a Windows Hello-ready fingerprint sensor.

Two issues I had with the Yoga 910 were the lack of Thunderbolt 3 ports and the extra-large chin bezel under the display. Lenovo appears to have fixed one of those two problems: the 920 has two Thunderbolt 3 ports that support data transfer and charging, which is a great upgrade from the single USB Type-C port on the 910. The 920’s bottom bezel is still its largest, but its webcam has been moved to the tiny top bezel. We prefer this placement for video chatting since you won’t get those unattractive up-the-nose shots like you would with a bottom-placed webcam. The only time this placement won’t come in handy is when the display is turned upside-down while in tent mode.

At this past CES, Lenovo announced its $ 130 Smart Assistant speaker with Amazon’s Alexa inside. While that device is still listed as “coming soon” on Lenovo’s website, the company isn’t putting any of its smart home ambitions on hold. Lenovo’s new Home Assistant Pack appears to be a pared-down version of the Smart Assistant—one that’s built to connect to any Tab 4 tablet.

The Home Assistant also has the Alexa voice assistant inside, but it’s not as powerful of a speaker as the Smart Assistant. It has a three-watt speaker and two built-in mics with far-field detection designed to pick up your voice from three meters away. The Smart Assistant instead has a five-watt tweet, a 10-watt subwoofer, and eight built-in mics with far-field detection.

Weighing 300 grams, the Home Assistant is basically an accessory version of the Smart Speaker that you can tote from room to room. By itself, it’s akin to Amazon’s Echo Dot—but paired with a Tab 4 tablet, it becomes similar to an Echo Show. Sliding one of Lenovo’s tablets into the Home Assistant’s dock will automatically bring up the “Home Assistant interface,” in which you can ask Alexa to play music, check your calendar, give you weather updates, and more. The tablet will show “display cards” for visual information in addition to the Home Assistant providing voice answers via Alexa.

The tablet market is increasingly skewing toward laptop replacements, but what if you want a replacement for a low-cost laptop? Lenovo thinks it has the answer. It’s introducing the Yoga A12, a 12.2-inch tablet that’s really a budget convertible laptop for the Android crowd. Think of it as a lower-priced but larger alternative to the Yoga Book. You won’t find the earlier model’s pen input or Windows 10 option, but you’ll still get a very portable design (it’s 0.21 inches thick at its slimmest point) that can fold into a slate when you’re watching Netflix, or a laptop when you need to get work done. The trick, as with the Yoga Book, is a flat touch-sensitive keyboard that eliminates some of the usual physical bulk. We found the Book’s keyboard hard to get used to, but it might be easier on the A12’s larger, more comfortable surface.

The A12 still has an Atom x5 chip powering things, although Lenovo has cut the memory and storage in half to 2GB and 32GB respectively. You’ll also get a 13-hour claimed battery life. This is clearly meant more for browsing and the occasional productivity app than someone intending to use the tablet as their main computer. You might not mind so much when you see the price, though: the new Yoga will start at $ 299 when it goes on sale February 8th. That’s just inexpensive enough that it could be a compelling alternative to a conventional entry-level laptop — it doesn’t have the performance or software of Windows portables, but it’ll be easier to carry and more flexible.
