Lennie James, who plays beloved Morgan in The Walking Dead, announced he would be leaving the hit AMC show last year. 

It wasn’t all bad news for fans of the stalwart character, as it was confirmed he would pop up in the show’s crossover. 

When Fear the Walking Dead returns later this year, viewers will be overjoyed to see Morgan in the spin-off. 

However, details of the crossover have been kept under tight wraps, but Lennie has let slip a few teasing details. 

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the 52-year-old teased he might not die in The Walking Dead. 

Lennie spilled: “Where they take Morgan to before he, let’s call it exits, is a great place and it’s like what they do in episode nine with Carl [Grimes, Chandler Riggs] and it’s a testimony to who he is as a character in the world.”

Although he wouldn’t confirm if his character would die, the actor continued to suggest “no one has guessed” how he will make the move. 

Lennie continued: “I think [it’s] brilliant storytelling. 

“I can’t think of anybody who has been offered the opportunity that I have been and I can’t think of anybody who has been associated with a character for as long as I have been who is then moved to the spin-off show and gets a whole new canvas to play with.

“They can tell the story in a free pace and they can explore Morgan in a different way because they don’t have to pay homage to the books so that’s really exciting.”

When asked if the beloved character would stay in Fear the Walking Dead for long, Lennie was decidedly more cryptic. 

“You’re going to have to watch and see,” he teased. 

Lennie giggled: “I can’t possibly comment because I’ve signed a piece of paper saying I explicitly wouldn’t talk about it!”

The latest comes as Chandler Riggs has taken a swipe at his character’s exit.

Carl was brutally killed off after being bitten by a Walker and seemed to be poking fun at the seemingly easy way he met his demise. 

The Walking Dead airs Monday on Fox UK at 9pm.

Although they haven’t featured together as much this season, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) fans always thought they would make a cute couple on .

Express.co.uk caught up with Lennie recently and it seemed the Morgan star has fuelled the theory along.

When asked if he reads fan theories, the 52-year-old who will soon be making the crossover to Fear The Walking Dead confessed he doesn’t, but keeps up to date with them when he meets fans.

Lennie laughed: “I don’t read into it at all but I meet [the fans] and people come up and give you their theories.

“They ask: ‘When are you and Carol going to get it together?’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know!’

“I don’t think it’s ever going to happen and I think Daryl would have something to say about it,” he teased.

If even the cast members are aware of the building romance between Carol and Daryl, could it be a sign the highly-anticipated relationship is coming?

Last year, Norman himself confessed “there’s definitely a spark of a relationship there”.

He previously told Express.co.uk: “I can’t tell you other stuff or if it’s going to happen or if it has already happened though.

“I definitely like doing scenes with her and there’s a lot of Melissa in those scenes and there’s a lot of Norman in those scenes.”

Lennie also spilled on what is to come from his departure from The Walking Dead, teasing no one has guessed how he will pop up in the crossover.

He teased: “The way that… I can’t give too much away. But where they take Morgan to before he exits is a great place and it’s like what they do in episode nine with Carl [Grimes, Chandler Riggs] and it’s a testimony to who he is as a character in the world.

“As they take him from one so to another – I think it’s brilliant storytelling. It’s really simple but no one has guessed it before.”

Lennie continued to explain he was thrilled to be offered a role in Fear the Walking Dead, admitting he is in love with Morgan’s character.

But will the beloved stalwart die as he leaves one show for another? Or will the AMC show’s bosses find a way to keep him alive?

The Walking Dead continues Sunday on AMC and will air the following day on FOX UK at 9pm.

Save Me follows the life of Nelly Rowe (played by Lennie), a down and out man who is brutally taken down by police who accuse him of kidnapping 13-year-old Jody McGory (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness). 

The teenager turns out to be his long-lost daughter who he shares with high-flying Claire McGory (Suranne Jones).

However, the real story is not that of a kidnapping plot, but that of Nelly desperately trying to clear his name and find Jody before it’s too late. 

Sky viewers have been enjoying Save Me and now The Walking Dead’s Lennie, who wrote the show, has some good news for fans. 

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, the 52-year-old revealed he had always intended for the story to continue. 

When asked if people would be happy with the ending to the series, Lennie explained: “People will have to watch and tell me.

“But when Ann Mensa [Sky controller] asked if I had an idea for a television series, was really if I had an idea for a returning television series and this is my idea. 

“Whatever happens at the end of the series, it was always my intention for it to be a returning series.”

When asked what was next for the Morgan Jones star, Lennie said: “I will hopefully get to do some more of this story with these characters.”

It seems that fans can expect more Save Me in the future, especially given the positive reviews the show has received. 

Lennie also explained that now is the perfect time for him to branch out into more writing projects. 

When asked why he chose now to get involved with the production side of television considering how busy he must be with the Fear The Walking Dead crossover he is now part of, his answer was resolute. 

“Why now? Because my kids went to university on one level,” he laughed. 

Lennie added: “And on another, because I act, because I’ve been relatively successful, the things I write end up being the things I can’t not write.

“If I’m going to commit myself to the solitary pursuit of writing, I have to be able to commit and I have to just write it.”

The Walking Dead‘s loss is Fear the Walking Dead‘s gain.

Lennie James is leaving the parent series behind after his Season 8 run to join the prequel series for Season 4.

James’ transition to Fear TWD was announced during Sunday night’s edition of Talking Dead. He starts filming Fear this Monday in Austin, Texas — just one week after wrapping TWD in Atlanta.

“Yeah, it’s me,” a self-described “surprised” James said to Chris Hardwick when he was revealed via satellite. “I’m joining the cast of Fear the Walking Dead.

“The hardest part of it… has been leaving The Walking Dead — leaving that cast, leaving that crew,” James, who was part of the original series’ pilot, added. But on Fear, “I’m really looking forward to exploring Morgan in a whole different world, with different characters, in a different place.”

In a statement, TWD EP Scott Gimple said, “Even though Morgan is going to be featured on Fear, he has a lot of story left on The Walking Dead. Morgan’s arc in Season 8 positioned him for the story on Fear. It was also important to see Fear‘s world and characters through new yet familiar eyes.”

This “crossover” of sorts was first teased at New York Comic-Con back in October, when TWD creator Robert Kirkman said that a big event was in the early stages of development.

“We want these shows to have their own legs, tell their own stories and be their own thing,” Kirkman said at the time. “I think we’ve finally gotten to a place with Fear the Walking Dead where it has its own identity [and] we can play with some things.”

Fans of the original Robert Kirkman comic books, on which the show is based, know full well that Morgan is put down by Michonne (Dania Gurira) after he is infected by a walker.

Although the AMC global hit has deviated from the original source text and Morgan is still very much alive and taking down zombies with his stick, Lennie said he was well aware that “everybody dies” in The Walking Dead.  

Speaking at a recent press event in London, the 51-year-old British star told press including Express.co.uk: “I know the show well enough to know everybody dies. So you don’t walk into The Walking Dead thinking, ‘I should buy a house on day one’. 

“It’s an inevitable part of the process and at the moment I’m having a good time, so I hope he hangs around for a bit.”

He likened working on The Walking Dead to the tenure of the British football manager, saying that his role was not permanent and that to think otherwise was “pure stupidity”. However, he joked that he could carry on doing The Walking Dead for “a minute more”.

The star went on to reflect on Morgan’s eventual demise, saying: “Then when he goes, I hope he goes good.”  

Lennie, whose credits include the likes of Line of Duty and Snatch, went on to reveal that one character will meet a “phenomenal” end when the AMC drama returns tonight. 

“We lose this someone in the second eight and that person’s out is so phenomenal that I was jealous. I was like, ‘that’s how I want to go out of this show!’ and it’s amazing,” he teased.

He has previously teased two or three losses in the second block of season seven, saying: “In the second eight you’ll be introduced to one, maybe two news worlds. There are a couple – two, three major losses and there is a push towards war.”

While he did not drop any hints about who could be facing the chop, the British actor went on to say that there were “being drawn” as characters picked sides.

Lennie set the rumour mill spinning earlier this year after it was announced that Sky had commissioned a series called Gone written and starring the actor. 

Nevertheless, it looks like he will be a part of The Walking Dead for now but with an impending and bloody war set to be waged against Negan, there are inevitably going to be casualties along the way.

The Walking Dead will return tonight in the US before airing on FOX UK tomorrow evening at 9pm.
