After a year of workshopping, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy unveiled the GOP's 2023 "Commitment to America" platform — featuring stock footage of Ukraine and Russia used to demonstrate the beauty of the United States and a fake Abraham Lincoln quote used in a letter to members of Congress. 

In a promotional video released yesterday titled "The Preamble to the Commitment to America," a narrator exhalts America's exceptionalism, blames Democrats for leading the country "off track," and announces the 2023 party platform priorities: an economy that's strong, a nation that's safe, a future built on freedom, and a government that's accountable.

The intentionally vague platform seeks to unite the GOP ahead of a tense election season marked by internal conflict and anticipated rifts between moderate Republicans and election-denying allies of Donald Trump, The Washington Post reported.  

Several clips in the video meant to portray the diversity and "vibrancy" of America — including scenes of a woman shopping in a supermarket, a child running through a field, and a farmer carrying a bag of wheat — were actually stock footage filmed in Russia and Ukraine, HuffPost first reported. 

Several images were created by Serg Grbanoff, a filmmaker based in Russia, HuffPost reported, who confirmed to the outlet the images were created in the Volgograd region of his home country. Another image was created by a Shutterstock contributor, DedovStock, who posts shots he takes in Ukraine.

"Interesting how you guys aren't remotely interested on the issues facing the American people in the video," McCarthy spokesman Mark Bednar told HuffPost when asked about the stock footage.

The stock footage wasn't the only issue to arise with the rollout of the platform. In a letter to House members announcing its priorities — tweeted by Politico reporter Olivia Beavers — McCarthy signs his name to letterhead featuring a quote falsely attributed to Lincoln. 

"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the letter reads, attributing the quote to the nation's 16th president.

Christian McWhirter, a historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, told The Daily Beast he could find "no reliable evidence" that Lincoln ever uttered those words.

"They do not appear in his writings and I cannot find them recollected by any of his contemporaries," McWhirter told The Daily Beast.

The phrase, attributed online to Lincoln, Shearson Lehman, and anonymous sources depending on the reference point, was printed in a 1986 full-page ad in The Wall Street Journal paid for by investment banking firm Lehman Brothers to thank its long-term employees.

"Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality," the ad reads, The Daily Beast reported. "It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than words. It is making the time when there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year."

Representatives for Rep. McCarthy did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Carragher tweeted a message to the Aussies saying ‘I knew you’d save me boys!’ with a picture of him alongside Smith and Lehmann.

But he quickly deleted it after getting a world of social media abuse.

Carragher was suspended by Sky Sports for spitting towards a fan and his daughter following Manchester United’s win over Liverpool in the Premier League earlier this month.

The former Liverpool defender was forced into a grovelling apology and will hold talks over his future with the TV broadcaster in the summer.

Former Aussie captain Smith will also face a fight to get the public back onside after his part in the ball-tampering scandal in the third Test against South Africa.

Smith has been stripped of the captaincy and banned for a year. He flew home from South Africa yesterday and faced the media for the first time.

He broke down in tears as he apologised for his ‘failure of leadership’ in the incident that saw Cameron Bancroft tampering with the ball during the match.

Bancroft was using sandpaper to help to Australian attack reverse swing the ball and he, along with Smith and Dave Warner have been handed bans.

Lehmann also since stood down by his own accord but will oversee the final Test which started this morning.

“As many who sit in this room will know, life on the road means a lot of time away from loved ones and after speaking to my family, it is the right time to step away,” Lehmann said.

“Speaking to the players and saying goodbye is the toughest thing I have had to do.

“It’s been happening for a few days and you think you can keep going but the amount of abuse just takes it toll. They made a mistake.

“Speaking to my family, they’ve had enough of travelling 300 days [a year].

“This was entirely my decision. I have been speaking to the hierarchy in the last couple of days.”

Earlier Smith had broken down in a press conference and took full responsibility to the incident which has rocked cricket this week.

“To all Australians who are disappointed and angry, I’m sorry,” Smith said.

“Tonight I want to make clear that as captain of the Australia cricket team I take full responsibility. I made a serious error of judgement.

“It was a serious failure of my leadership. I’ll do everything I can to make up for my mistake and the damage it’s caused.”

But fans thought Carragher’s message, after his own disgracing, showed a lack of class and apathy.

“Wow, you need a new media manger,” one wrote. “Spitting in the face of a kid and you congratulate others, awesome tweet grub.”

Another said: “Probably not the best thing to say. It does go against your oh I am so sorry statement.”

Another said: “At least they didn’t spit at a child.”

They say human beings have short memories, but this is outright amnesia.

Donald Trump and the Republican Party’s efforts to dissolve many of the new regulations imposed on major Wall Street banks in the wake of the worst financial crisis are most stunning because they ignore such glaring and recent lessons.

These include: 1. bank self-regulation ends in tears since the crisis was caused by a lax enforcement of rules, not an excess of them; and 2. bankers will push financial risk to the limit if they know taxpayers will bail them out regardless.

“There are few precedents in modern political history for such a rapid and fundamental reversal of course,” writes Paul Lee, a regulation lawyer at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and a member of the adjunct faculty of Columbia Law School in a blog.

On Friday, the House of Representatives passed the curiously named Financial Choice Act, which repeals many important provisions of the Dodd-Frank law enacted in 2010 to deal with the aftermath of the financial crisis. That’s a lightening-speed reversal of direction, in historical terms.

“Consider the significant reform enactments dating from the Great Depression, such as the Securities Act of 1933, the Federal Deposit Insurance Act, and the Glass-Steagall Act. The basic construct of these enactments remain in place with the exception of certain parts of the Glass-Steagall Act, which were repealed only in 1999, 66 years after their initial enactment,” Lee adds.

Simon Johnson, a professor at MIT and a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, tells Business Insider the latest proposal is “a dangerous plan for financial deregulation [where] the primary beneficiaries would be the big banks.”

In particular, Johnson worries “the proposal to rely on bankruptcy for large banks is pure fantasy — this would risk a repeat of what happened with Lehman Brothers, but on a larger scale.” Lehman’s failure in September 2008 accelerated the financial crisis and led to a deep global financial shock with widespread economic repercussions, including the loss of millions of jobs.

Why is it lunacy to abandon rules intended to prevent another financial crisis so quickly after experiencing the worst meltdown in generations?

“Thanks to Wall Street reform, U.S. banks have a greater capacity to absorb losses during periods of stress, increasingly rely on stable sources of funding, undergo rigorous stress testing, plan for their orderly failure and don’t make swing-for-the-fences bets,” argues Gregg Gelzinis, a special assistant on the economic policy team at the liberal Center for American Progress, in an opinion piece.

“Large, complex nonbank financial companies that pose financial stability risks, such as AIG, now face enhanced regulation and oversight,” he writes. “Consumers are now better protected from toxic products in the financial marketplace, and perverse incentives and predatory practices in the housing and securitization markets have been significantly curtailed.”

These are all good things, and they are not, as some bankers would have the public believe, constraining economic activity or lending. In fact, much of the evidence suggests a recent tightening in commercial and industrial lending has been driven primarily by a lack of demand for loans, not a backlog due to regulatory hurdles.
