For over a decade, Customs and Border Protection has failed to properly verify e-passports (which contain biometric data) as “it lacked the software to do so,” according to a new letter sent by two top senators.

According to a 2010 report authored by the Government Accountability Office, the problem needed fixing then—and eight years later it still hasn’t been resolved.

An e-passport is essentially a passport that includes machine-readable RFID chips containing a traveler’s personal information. These more digitally secure passports, which began to be required by the United States for visitors form visa waiver countries beginning in 2007, are scanned at the border by a CBP agent’s computer. However, without a digital signature, it is impossible to validate that the data contained on the passport is actually authentic.

  • Bitcoin can serve as a global currency in theory, according to Goldman Sachs strategists.
  • The reality is that much of the developed world already has stable monetary systems, alternative stores of value, and the US dollar for foreign trade and reserves.
  • Cryptocurrencies may be useful in parts of the global financial system where the traditional functions of money don’t work as well.

Bitcoin can be a legitimate and widespread form of money but mostly in theory, for now, according to Goldman Sachs strategists.

That’s because the key functions of money that bitcoin can serve are already well handled across much of the developed world. Many countries had stable currencies and inflation rates before bitcoin came along. The dollar is the standard for international trade, and for foreign-exchange reserves. Investors wanting to diversify their portfolios could use precious metals like gold.

And so, cryptocurrencies seem to be trying to solve problems that don’t exist — at least in the developed world.

“The widespread use of the dollar outside the US — and full dollarization in some countries — suggests there is already demand for an internationally accepted medium of exchange and store of value,” said Goldman’s Zach Pandl and Charles Himmelberg in a note on Wednesday.

“In those countries and corners of the financial system where the traditional services of money are inadequately supplied, bitcoin (and cryptocurrencies more generally) may offer viable alternatives.”

The strategists said there’s evidence that demand for cryptos is related to regions where there’s already a dissatisfaction with the existing monetary system. For example, bitcoin exchange volumes surged in China after the country started clamping down on capital outflows in 2016.

Screen Shot 2018 01 10 at 9.51.46 AMGoldman Sachs

In that sense, there’s demand for bitcoin as a form of money to make transactions. But as part of a currency portfolio, cryptocurrencies are “more consistent with a classic speculative bubble,” the strategists said. They noted that Korea and Japan dominate bitcoin exchange volumes, but are also countries with stable monetary systems.

The reality is that cryptocurrencies still have a high regulatory bar to clear in most places, the strategists said. To start with, governments can’t track who’s paying or receiving digital currencies. And as traders well know, cryptos are vulnerable to wild price swings that are rare with fiat currencies, making them bad stores of value.

Goldman Sachs is reportedly preparing a cryptocurrency trading desk.

Russian jet buzzes over DC & Trump golf course – but it’s all legit, don't worry https://briefnews.eu/russian-jet-buzzes-over-dc-trump-golf-course-but-its-all-legit-dont-worry/ https://briefnews.eu/russian-jet-buzzes-over-dc-trump-golf-course-but-its-all-legit-dont-worry/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 11:29:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russian-jet-buzzes-over-dc-trump-golf-course-but-its-all-legit-dont-worry/

A Russian Air Force observation plane entered secure airspace over Washington, DC, reportedly flying past the Pentagon and CIA before veering off to New Jersey, where Donald Trump is vacationing. US defense officials told media the jet had full clearance.

Two Russian observation flights over the Washington, DC, metropolitan area – authorized under the Open Skies Treaty signed by 34 nations including the US and Russia – made headlines in the American media on Wednesday.

Most outlets were particularly drawn to the fact the Russian Open Skies aircraft – converted from an old Tu-154M airliner – had allegedly been traveling at around 1,000 meters (3,700ft) over the DC metropolitan area.

According to CNN, the plane “overflew the US Capitol, the Pentagon, Central Intelligence Agency and Joint Base Andrews” in Maryland. Fox News, however, says it cannot confirm any Russian flight over the Capitol.

Politico and Fox News also said the jet went past Bedminster, New Jersey, where President Donald Trump is vacationing. Other spots reportedly included the Wright-Patterson airbase in Ohio as well as the Mount Weather emergency operations center in Virginia.

Later in the day, Pentagon officials played down the news, saying it was a “semi-routine” flight taking place under US supervision. “I don’t know of any military facilities there,” a Pentagon official who confirmed the mission, told Politico.

He said the Russians “usually come in and they list out what locations they want to fly over,” then submit the flight route to the Americans. “We put together the flight plan and with a few exceptions — safety-wise or weather-wise — they are allowed to fly over pretty much the entire territory.”

“It is very controlled and very proscribed,” the official added, including “when they are allowed to take sensor readings.”

According to the official, Russia had given the mandatory 72-hour notice before the flight. The official refused to publicly discuss the flight plans as the Russian Open Skies mission is ongoing.

Another US official told Fox News the Tu-154M was cleared to enter so-called Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) airspace established over Trump’s golf course. “There would have been action taken if the Russians were not allowed to be there,” said one official who chose not to be identified.

“The United States is notified ahead of time of the intended flight path of observation flights, [and] participates in the development of agreed flight plans … the Treaty does not preclude an observed State Party from taking mitigation measures at sensitive sites on the ground,” the US State Department told Russia’s TASS news agency on Wednesday.

Brokered by NATO and the Warsaw Pact in 1992, the Treaty on Open Skies took effect in 2002. The Open Skies covers the territory over which the parties to the treaty exercise sovereignty, including land, islands, and internal and territorial waters.

The treaty stipulates that monitoring flights may only be restricted for flight safety reasons, not for reasons of national security.

Normally, the flights under the treaty are conducted by unarmed observation aircraft fitted with various types of film and sensor equipment that are certified by all signatories. Russia employs a Tu-154M version, referred to as Tu-154M-ON.

The Russian Air Force is planning to phase out the ageing aircraft and replace it with two Tu-214ON jets equipped with high-resolution digital cameras.

As a rule, before the flights each host nation is given the flight plan of the mission and a verification team fly aboard the aircraft to make sure the crew complies with the treaty. After the flight, the host nation receives a copy of any imagery data collected by the observation aircraft.

I Tried The Underwear That's All Over Instagram To See If It's Actually Legit https://briefnews.eu/i-tried-the-underwear-thats-all-over-instagram-to-see-if-its-actually-legit/ https://briefnews.eu/i-tried-the-underwear-thats-all-over-instagram-to-see-if-its-actually-legit/#respond Sat, 05 Aug 2017 17:06:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/i-tried-the-underwear-thats-all-over-instagram-to-see-if-its-actually-legit/

I forgot I was wearing underwear, TBH. MeUndies isn’t lying when it describes its underwear as “smooth and supple.” Seriously, the word “supple” makes me gag and I’m even willing to use it here. I never felt them riding up, and the waistband is super-soft, so it didn’t dig into my skin. Usually when I get home from work, I’m itching (sometimes literally) to pull off my underwear and throw on sweatpants — but not with these. I didn’t mind lounging on the couch in them.

Mario + Rabbids is legit. Seriously! https://briefnews.eu/mario-rabbids-is-legit-seriously/ https://briefnews.eu/mario-rabbids-is-legit-seriously/#respond Thu, 03 Aug 2017 01:30:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mario-rabbids-is-legit-seriously/

Adding Princess Peach to my party was what did me in. It seemed like a solid choice: she’s got strong defensive skills, a quick little heal on many of her moves, and a powerful shotgun. When is picking a shotgun bad? Never, I thought, and that was the problem. That shotgun, which would occasionally auto-attack, would both destroy cover and light my party members on fire, both of which posed problems.

So I restarted this late-game level. And I restarted it again. And I only managed to beat it with Peach as my last survivor, dashing through pipes to reach the victory point with just two hit points left. My skill choices, my team selection, the enemy types, and the level layout all combined to put me in a really difficult situation.

Yes, I’m talking about Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. The crossover that never made any kind of sense, that nobody seemed to want when it was announced, suddenly flipped at E3 when it became clear that it was actually a tactical XCOM-inspired RPG. The whole process might have been the first recorded reverse “milkshake duck,” with people like me going from no interest (or less!) into genuine curiosity. So I went into last week’s preview event not just to look at Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle as a Mario game, but to check out where it fit in the suddenly vibrant genre of tactical strategy and role-playing games.

Yes, there’s serious depth

As my experience with Peach showed, this game is legitimately deep. While it was frustrating to lose repeatedly in a demo, it was also fairly easy for me to see that my main problem was a lack of context and progression for my characters. That is, had I known how Peach’s shotgun works, how Mario’s jumps could be upgraded, and what kind of skills my Rabbid Yoshi could use, perhaps I’d have done better.

The development team also gave a presentation just before we did these advanced levels, where they showed some of the combo possibilities for high-level players. This included skills that pulled enemies together for area of effect attacks, or the sniper Luigi launching himself across the map using multiple movement abilities to get in the best position. Whether or not casual players (especially children) can get to the point where they’re able to pull off these combos is a legitimate question, but just the potential is promising

Above: This is a gosh dang real skill tree with interesting choices

That potential for skill combos exists because, despite looking a lot like XCOM, Mario + Rabbids has a few distinct differences that make it a lot more focused on performing wild maneuvers. First, it’s more of a role-playing game than most other tactics titles these days, with only three characters in a party at a time (always Mario, with Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, or the four Rabbid variations of those classics tagging along). Each has a specific archetype: Mario is a bruiser, Luigi a sniper, and Peach was described to me as a paladin, wielding defense, offense, and healing all together. Their skill trees also allow for a lot of customization, allowing you to build for movement, power, or special moves.

Second, where most tactics games allow characters to do one or two things per turn — moving and/or taking action, usually — Mario + Rabbids offers four. Every turn, a character can move normally and take a regular shot. They can also use a special ability at the end of every turn, which are things like going into increasingly powerful special reaction shots, or buffing nearby party members.

But mobility is the most important thing for allowing players to string together clever tactics. Beyond the simple move each character can always do, they also have other options if they run into an enemy, a friendly character, or a pipe. With the first, characters will do a sliding melee attack and still have all their initial movement. With a friendly, characters launch into the air to get better tactical positioning. And with the last, pipes not only transport your party members across whatever boundaries, but they give a bonus to movement afterward.

All these make for more options, but they combine with the skill tree of individual party members to create a lot more distinction for the eight characters. Mario, when leveled up, can do damage near where he lands, while Peach heals friendlies that she lands near. The higher the level, the more significant the potential changes.

The net effect is that the system is built on planning out each turn for maximum impact. This makes Mario + Rabbids feel more like a tactics games built on combo planning, like Disgaea or Dynasty Tactics (as opposed to the granular gambling systems of XCOM or Fire Emblem).

Above: Four of Mario’s world types are here, including Boo’s Mansion types. Happily, no water levels.

The cuteness is serious too

So Mario + Rabbids offers surprising tactical depth. That’s great, but this is, at its heart, still a Mario game set in the Mushroom Kingdom. So it needs to be charming, and despite being developed by Ubisoft and not Nintendo proper, Mario + Rabbids delivers. Everything is bright and cheerful, the text is to-the-point except when it’s being funny — and it was actually amusing in parts, delving into Mario references deftly.

Perhaps, surprisingly, the camera movement impressed me most. With the XCOM reboot, the camera became a critical part of making tactical games feel urgent, as its burly squaddies slammed up against cover, Gears of War-style — although it also had its quirks. Mario + Rabbids has different camera needs, and instead uses it to accent the personality of the art style and animations. It felt tightly designed, showing me what I might want to see without ever feeling off.

I still have some major questions about Mario + Rabbids. This game will succeed or fail based on how well it teaches players the intricacies of its progression systems. I’m also a little concerned about whether it has long-term staying power, thanks to its embedded, non-random level design — although Ubisoft seemed very keen on pushing us toward the cooperative option as the game mode for players who want more.

Yet given that six weeks ago this was a game that had to justify its existence, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle has done an amazing job in presenting itself as a serious tactics experience as well as a charming Mario game. Mario + Rabbids is legit, and that might make it the biggest positive surprise of 2017.

The curious case of ClinicalTrials.gov, where dubious stem cell therapies seem legit https://briefnews.eu/the-curious-case-of-clinicaltrials-gov-where-dubious-stem-cell-therapies-seem-legit/ https://briefnews.eu/the-curious-case-of-clinicaltrials-gov-where-dubious-stem-cell-therapies-seem-legit/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 05:23:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-curious-case-of-clinicaltrials-gov-where-dubious-stem-cell-therapies-seem-legit/

Earlier this year, doctors reported the case of three women who went blind after having stem cells derived from their own fat injected directly into their eyeballs—a procedure for which they each paid $ 5,000. Piecing together how those women came to pay for such a treatment, the doctors noted that at least one of the patients was lured by a trial listing on ClinicalTrials.gov—a site run by the US National Institutes of Health to register clinical trials. Though none of the women was ever enrolled in the trial—which never took place and has since been withdrawn—it was enough to make the treatment seem like part of legitimate, regulated clinical research.

But it wasn’t. And, according to a new analysis in the journal Regenerative Medicine, it’s not the only case of dubious and potentially harmful stem cell therapies lurking on the respected NIH site.

At least 18 ostensible trials listed on the site offer similar stem cell treatments that participants must pay to receive—unlike most trials, which compensate rather than charge participants for experimental treatments. These trials, sponsored by seven companies total, claim to be developing therapies for a wide range of conditions, like erectile dysfunction, type II diabetes, vision problems, Parkinson’s disease, premature ovarian failure, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, these trials are largely not backed by preliminary research. None of them has Food and Drug Administration approval—even though the agency has published a draft guidance that suggests these treatments are subject to FDA regulation. And some of the studies are only granted ethical approval by review boards with apparent conflicts of interest and histories of reprimands from medical boards and the FDA.

Power Recap: If the Feds Aren't Legit, You Must Acquit — Plus: Who Dies? https://briefnews.eu/power-recap-if-the-feds-arent-legit-you-must-acquit-plus-who-dies/ https://briefnews.eu/power-recap-if-the-feds-arent-legit-you-must-acquit-plus-who-dies/#respond Mon, 24 Jul 2017 02:10:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/power-recap-if-the-feds-arent-legit-you-must-acquit-plus-who-dies/ Need to catch up? Check out the previous Power recap here.

The dumpster fire that is Angela’s legal career continues to blaze in this week’s Power, but at least this latest conflagration is for a noble-ish cause: Assistant U.S. Attorney Valdes’ honesty about her co-workers’ dishonesty gets Ghost’s case dropped.

But before you start feeling good about anything, Ghost kills a guy during the hour, too. Angie puts it best when she rebuffs James’ thanks for her part in securing his freedom, saying, “Maybe you didn’t do this crime, but we both know you’re not innocent.”

Power Recap Season 4 Episode 5Here, briefly, is how James St. Patrick once more becomes a free man. The Feds zero in on a large check Tommy gave to Ghost. They think it’s payment for killing Lobos; remember, they’re still under the impression that Tommy calls all the shots. Meanwhile, Angela goes to Sandoval with what she noticed about the Truth security footage: Namely, Ghost never goes anywhere near where he allegedly stashed the gun used to kill Greg. When Mike tells her they’re going to ignore the tape because it’s “speculative at best,” Angela goes to Proctor for help, but he’s useless now that he’s been ordered off the case. So in the end, Valdes does what she thinks is best, testifying in court about the Truth tape and how her colleagues are pretending like it doesn’t exist.

That’s enough to get the case against Ghost thrown out, and as the episode ends, he’s preparing to re-enter life as a normal (ha!) citizen. But a bunch of other important stuff happens during the hour, too — such as:

* Marshal Williams is going to get transferred, and he’s not happy about it. Tony whispers to the guard that Ghost was behind the decision to move him, then implies that he can help him “get rid of” Inmate St. Patrick. So Williams corners Ghost in the prison’s weight room and starts talking smack about Tasha, but it doesn’t have the desired outcome: Ghost snaps and uses a weight plate to bash Williams’ head to a puddle of pulp. (Side note: I kept waiting for them to show us that it was just a violent fantasy of Ghost’s or something — that’s how vivid the gore was — but nope. Woah.) Tony and another prisoner come in, seemingly as part of a plan to aid Williams, but Tony quickly changes tack and kills his accomplice, then helps Ghost make the scene look like a murder-suicide.

Power Recap Season 4 Episode 5* As Ghost prepares to leave jail, Tony hands him a phone and orders him to have Tommy call. “What, you know his father or something?” St. Patrick asks… then realizes what we’ve suspected for a while: Tony probably is Tommy’s dad. The older man threatens to turn Ghost in for Williams’ death if he says anything.

* LaKeisha confides in Tasha that she “caught feelings’ for the white guy she’s sleeping with, and when Tasha surmises that it’s Tommy, she warns him tha the can’t break up with Keisha because she knows too much about Ghost’s business. Then she asks about Holly, and Tommy tearfully confesses that he killed her. T says she understands, which seems to relieve a little of his guilt. (P.S. It really shouldn’t.)

* Dre keeps the underground casino going as a way to offset losses from the clubs being shut down. He also has ideas about keeping the drug enterprise afloat. Tommy approves of both plans. What Tommy likely would not approve of, if he knew: Dre meets with Kanan, saying that he can help him climb back up to the top of the game. Kanan is definitely interested… but neither man knows that Julio witnesses the meeting from afar.

* Simon Strand reappears, offering Ghost and Tasha financial help while their accounts are frozen. Both turn him down, but after Ghost’s case is dropped, Tasha gives the wily older man a call.

* Silver is totally into Tasha, isn’t he? And am I mistaken, but is the feeling kind of mutual?

* Jukebox returns, does something (probably nefarious) to Tariq, then informs Kanan that Ghost’s freedom means their plan is back on: Ransom ‘Riq, then kill both the boy and his father. Surely the time that Kanan has spent with the teen in the past few weeks has changed his mind, right? “So what do you need me to do?” he asks, smiling. Welp, that’d be a no!

* Chicago summons Tommy for an in-person meeting, so he leaves, looking very unhappy about the whole thing.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Sound off in the comments!
