It’s no secret that some of our federal legislators don’t have a firm grip on scientific evidence; it only takes watching a session of the House Science Committee, where one member suggested the climate-driven rise of the oceans might instead be caused by rocks falling into the ocean.

What’s often overlooked is that state legislators are even worse (though it’s not clear how much this is a product of there simply being more of them). Each year, they oversee a variety of attempts to introduce pseudoscience into the public schools of a number of states.

But it recently came out that a legislator in Montana was attempting to have the state officially renounce the findings of the scientific community. And, if the federal government decides to believe the scientists and do something about emissions, he wants the Treasure State to somehow sit those efforts out.

A Moscow city legislator has come up with an idea to create a publicly available blacklist of “phony wizards,” while “legit” warlocks should get together and form a trade union of sorts.

The quite outstanding initiative has been floated by a deputy with the Moscow City Duma, Anton Pavleev.

“A professional association of them [‘mages’] should emerge to tell normal people from fraudsters. It will publish such data on a website, as other communities do,” Paleev told Moskva news agency on Tuesday, citing existing unions of sports enthusiasts and quest-game organizers as examples.

“I believe if there are that many warlocks, mages, wizards and parapsychologists in Moscow, a professional association is needed,” he stressed.

It remained unclear how exactly the legislator would tell “legit” mages prom “phony” ones to create the association in the first place.

Pavleev’s initiative contains some rational ideas as well, since the legislator suggested that the magical activities should receive some legal evaluation. The wizardry, fortune telling and other quite questionable services are actually quite a large market in Russia, which is, however, hardly regulated.

The deputy, however, believes, that such initiative should come from the “magic” community itself, since the authorities cannot “arbitrarily catch everyone and throw them behind bars.”

The “wizards” themselves, however, seem to be quite reluctant to create a trade union, with some suggesting that the bureaucrats are actually up to their own “magic” tricks.

“I’m against such whitelists, since only fraudster-mages will get on them,” Anastasia, a ‘wizard,’ told Life.ru. “One who pays up, will instantly become a good one.”

Providing “magic services” is a profitable – if questionable – business, mainly preying on desperate people. Back in August, for example, a woman from Moscow Region filed a complaint to law enforcement after she paid a “wizard” the hefty sum of 5.8 million rubles (nearly $ 90,000) to cure her husband’s cancer. While the man purported to be a “hereditary warlock in the 12th generation,” his “treatment” – unsurprisingly – had no effect.

It’s been a rough holiday season for video game loot boxes. The increasingly common in-game microtransactions (usually just a few dollars each) offer a small chance at ultra-rare upgrades, cosmetic tweaks, and a much larger chance at being packed with common junk. Games like Forza Motorsport 7, Need for Speed Payback, and, of course, Star Wars Battlefront 2 are receiving a slew of critical and user ire for the way they push randomized sets of in-game items on players.

While plenty of gamers are fed up with the practice, one gamer who happens to be a Hawaiian state legislator is trying to do something about it.

Last month, state representative Chris Lee publicly launched his effort to pass legislation regulating the sales of video games with loot boxes in Hawaii. In a press conference flanked by religious and business leaders, parents, and affected gamers, he called out “predatory practices in online gaming and the significant financial consequences they can have on families.” Battlefront 2 got specific condemnation as a “Star Wars-themed online casino” in Lee’s telling.

Belgium’s Gaming Commission has ruled that loot boxes—in-game purchases where what you receive is randomized and only known once you open the box—are gambling. The country’s minister of justice, Koen Geens, has said that he wants to see them banned Europe-wide, reports PC Gamer (and, in Dutch, VTM Nieuws).

Amid outcry over the use of loot boxes in Overwatch and Star Wars Battlefront 2, the Belgian Gaming Commission decided last week to look into the issue, with Commission Director Peter Naessens specifically saying that the combination of paying money and receiving something “dependent on chance” prompted the investigation. Rather swiftly, it seems, the Commission has made its decision.

In October, the US’ Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rejected calls to classify loot boxes as gambling. It told Kotaku that since players receive some reward from opening the loot box—even if it’s useless or unwanted—that it’s not gambling. As such, loot box games will receive neither ESRB’s “Real Gambling” nor “Simulated Gambling” labels, the former of which automatically gives a game an “Adults Only” rating. Many retailers refuse to sell A-O games, so giving every title that uses loot boxes such a rating would likely be harmful to their sales.
