The Australian-born star racked up an impressive number of credits across his career, and would have turned 39 this April.

He was 28 when he died in New York City on January 22, 2008.

Here we look back on his finest projects.

Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Teen movies are easy to mock, possibly because it’s a genre so often mishandled. But every now and again a true classic comes along, and 10 Things I Hate About You was just that.

Loosely taking its cues from Shakespeare’s hugely controversial Taming of the Shrew, it provided a breakout success for Ledger – as well as his co-stars Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The movie received generally positive reviews from critics and and grossed just over $ 50 million at the box office.

Ennis Del Mar – Brokeback Mountain (2005)

That Brokeback Mountain did not win Best Picture remains one of the biggest Oscars shocks of all time – and it was the performances of Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal that resonated very well with critics and audiences.

Brokeback was a huge success; getting $ 178.1 million at the box office against a modest budget of just $ 14 million.

The Joker – The Dark Knight (2008)

The role for which Ledger won his posthumous Oscar, The Dark Knight was in post-production at the time of his death.

His portrayal of the character is often cited as the definitive one: in addition to the Oscar, he also won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Saturn Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

William Thatcher – A Knight’s Tale (2001)

A medieval adventure comedy, A Knight’s Tale could so easily have been terrible – but actually it was a well-executed, funny affair; anchored by a brilliant lead performance by Ledger.

A Knight’s Tale received some criticism in reviews at the time, but has held up as a great comedy classic for the whole family.

Sonny Grotowski in Monster’s Ball (2001)

This was the movie that won Halle Berry her historic Best Actress Oscar, and Ledger was also phenomenal in a supporting role.

Monster’s Ball still holds up: on Rotten Tomatoes it has a strong 85% rating.

The latest movie by Christopher Nolan features stars like Tom Hardy, Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, and Cillian Murphy — but when you leave the theater after watching “Dunkirk” (opens July 21), one of the performances you’ll likely remember most will be the acting debut of pop star Harry Styles.

Formerly part of One Direction, Styles has branched off into being one of the biggest solo performers in the world, and now he’s showing he has acting chops as well.

“Dunkirk” is an intimately told look at the Allied evacuation of the beaches of Dunkirk, France during World War II. Told in three parts — soldiers on the beach, British pilots fighting off German bombers in the sky, and civilian boats on the water en route to Dunkirk to help with the evacuation — Nolan explores the journey of a handful of men involved in all three instances.

Styles plays Alex, one of the soldiers trying to get off the beach, and it’s not easy. Escaping out of sinking destroyers and avoiding being shot at by oncoming Germans soldiers on foot advancing towards the beach, Styles delivers a riveting performance. And for a movie limited with dialogue, he gets a large part of the lines that are spoken.

He cast Robin Williams in one of the actor’s rare turns as a bad guy in 2002’s “Insomnia,” had David Bowie play Nikola Tesla in 2006’s “The Prestige,” and then there was the shocking choice of choosing Heath Ledger to play The Joker in 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” which went on to earn Ledger a posthumous Oscar win for best supporting actor.

Nolan sees similarities to those castings and going with Styles.

“Ever since I cast Heath Ledger as The Joker and raised all kinds of eyebrows, I’ve recognized that this is my responsibility and I really have to spot the potential in somebody who hasn’t done a particular thing before,” Nolan told Business Insider. “Because whether you’re taking about Harry Styles or Mark Rylance you don’t really want to cast them in a position where they are doing something they’ve already done. You want to give the audience something different. So you’re looking at their talent and how that can be used.”

And there was little preference given to Styles in the casting process (though Nolan has admitted he wasn’t aware how famous Styles really is).

We threw him into the mix with many, many other young men and he earned his seat at the table over a series of very hard-fought auditions,” Nolan said.

Styles definitely holds his own on screen, proving he can move us with his dramatic acting as much as his comedy, which he showed off earlier this year on “Saturday Night Live.”

Nolan can’t wait for audiences to see this side of Styles.

“I’m very excited for people to see what he has done in the film,” Nolan said. “I think it’s truthful and it’s a very tough role he’s playing, too.”

Spike usually doesn’t have much to offer in the vein of quality entertainment, but the one worthwhile endeavor they do bring to the table is their ongoing series of feature length documentaries. The network has examined pop culture sensations such as Chris Farley and Johnny Cash, and now their latest documentary shines a light on the life and death of Heath Ledger.

The star of The Dark Knight died tragically in 2008 before his performance as The Joker was seen by audiences, but it was a role that would be one of the pinnacle pieces of his all too short career. I Am Heath Ledger takes never before seen footage from the actor’s personal video collection, interviews with famous friends and colleagues, and more to create a portrait of a talented young man who was taken from us all too soon.

I Am Heath Ledger Trailer

This past January marked nine years since Heath Ledger passed away, and today also marks what would have been his 38th birthday. The documentary doesn’t seem to offer up more than a somber remembrance of the actor, but seeing footage of Ledger recording himself in the mirror with various video cameras is certainly bittersweet. That will be enough to lure in fans who are curious to find out more about the actor’s personal life, so hopefully, there’s more than meets the eye from this trailer.

Using videos from the actor’s personal video library as well as interviews with the likes of director Ang Lee, actors Ben Mendelsohn and Naomi Watts, and musician Ben Harper, the documentary will take viewers through the actor’s career that includes 10 Things I Hate About You, The Patriot, Brokeback Mountain, Monster’s Ball, and more. It hails from Derik Murray, the man behind Spike’s other docs about Evel Knieval, Chris Farley, JFK Jr. and Johnny Cash, so expect more of the same in that regard.

If you’re looking forward to seeing what this documentary offers, there are a variety of ways you’ll be able to catch it. First, it will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 23. Then it will open in select theaters on May 3 (check your local listings for showtimes and availability), followed by debuting exclusively on Spike TV on May 17 at 10 pm ET/PT.

Told through excerpts of his greatest performances, interviews with friends and family (including Ben Mendelsohn, Naomi Watts, Ang Lee, and Ben Harper), and the lens of his own camera, I Am Heath Ledger is an intimate celebration of the actor, artist, and icon. An artist of exceptional depth and courage, Ledger was equally talented behind the camera. This stirring documentary paints a rich portrait of one of the great artists of his generation.
