Lincoln is launching a new subscription-based service that will allow customers to lease any of its vehicles on a month-by-month basis as part of a new suite of services aimed at offering flexibility and converting buyers.

The luxury brand has also been operating a pilot program in which dealers bring Lincoln vehicles to consumers’ homes for them to test drive on their own time — and sometimes even complete the entire sales process at their homes. Lincoln also announced on the heels of the L.A. Auto Show a new collaboration with Clear, a company that provides expedited screening at security gates at airports and sports arenas, plus an expansion of its Lincoln Personal Driver service, formerly known as Lincoln Chauffeur, to Dallas.

Kumar Galhotra, Lincoln’s president, said the company is trying to create a brand experience for consumers that is warm, human and effortless, and that the new services are based on consumer research that equates time with luxury. “We take this philosophy of warm, human and effortless, and we really embed it” in the vehicles and ownership experience, he said.

Lincoln plans to launch its vehicle subscription service early next year, likely in “a couple California cities,” Galhotra said, that allows consumers to lease any Lincoln vehicle on a monthly basis. While Lincoln did not announce pricing, the program is based on Ford Credit’s Canvas program, which offers monthly subscriptions to pre-owned Ford vehicles and come with insurance, maintenance and warranty coverage. The service is so far offered only in the Bay Area and parts of Los Angeles. The service appears to be similar to the $ 1,500-a-month Book by Cadillac service and Care by Volvo.

Robert Parker, Lincoln’s global director of marketing, sales and service, said the service will allow consumers the option of upgrading to larger-size vehicles without being locked into a traditional two-year lease.

“We acknowledge the fact that we are a challenger brand. We’re not at the scale of the Germans,” Parker said. “We certainly aspire to continue to grow, that’s not our No. 1 focus. But really for us, the inspiration was more what we’re learning from research around what customers want, and they want options.”

He added, “We want to reinvent leasing in the 21st century, and this is a step in that direction.”

Meanwhile, Lincoln launched its at-home test-drive and sales program with 10 dealers across the country in March and brought in consultants from Trunk Club, an individualized service from retailer Nordstrom, to talk about how to transform the purchase process. Lincoln has already conducted at-home test drives in China, Parker said. It’s also learned from its Pickup and Delivery program, which has seen 60,000 rides since the program launched last year, and from data that show consumers more and more are going to dealers only to confirm color options or do a test drive after researching their options on their own.

“People are expecting that,” Parker said. “Luxury customers, they don’t wanna go spend two, three, four hours, none of us do.”

Parker said the company is currently evaluating applications to join the program from 75 additional dealers.

Lincoln plans to launch its collaboration with Clear in January. New Lincoln buyers will get a six-month free membership, while Black Label clients will get one year. The service allows members to proceed to a dedicated line at security checkpoints, where they can pass through by tapping their finger on a screen or scanning their eye. The service is in place at more than 30 airports and sports arenas nationwide.

Judging by the advertising you see, you’d be hard-pressed to know that it was even possible to finance a new car these days. Every ad, promotion and banner you see is lease, lease lease and for good reason: New car leasing offers reasonable monthly payments, often with minimal down-payments. But they’re not perfect and they’re not for everyone. Read on to find out the difference between leasing and buying and some tips to figure out which one is right for you.

What is a Lease?

A lease on a car is much like a lease on an apartment: You sign a contract for a fixed price over a fixed period of time, usually between 24 and 36 months, with a fixed mileage. This price is usually far less than it would take to finance the vehicle outright. When the lease is over, you return the car to the dealer, pay for any damage and it’s over. This means you pay less, but retain no equity — or liability— in the vehicle. And the end of the lease, you have nothing. That is, unless you buy the car at the residual value set at the time of the lease by the lender.

Your monthly payment on a lease is dependent upon a number of factors including the vehicle’s price, your initial payment and something called a “money factor.” This can be thought of in a similar way to an APR on a normal loan; the higher the number, the more expensive the financing of the lease is.

There is a little-used “one-pay” lease where you can pay the full amount of the lease at drive-off. This method requires you to drop thousands of dollars in one swoop, but will reduce the fees charged on the lease. It may also be easier to be approved for this type of lease, but there’s a downside: all that cash won’t be available to earn interest for you.

How is Financing Different Than Leasing?

Financing a new is different than a lease in a few crucial ways. The most obvious is that, despite trends towards 72- and 84-month loans, financing a car results in a higher monthly payment. Unlike leases, auto loans can be acquired at your local bank or credit union. Smart consumers will know their credit score, know average interest rates, and get pre-approved before shopping for their new car.

Which is Better: Loan or Lease?

Unfortunately, there’s no clear cut answer here. Leases aren’t always for people who want more car than they can afford and traditional financing isn’t just for people who drive their cars until the wheels fall off. With that said, check our tips to determine which method might be right for you:

Why You Should Lease a Car:

  • You don’t want to put down a large chunk of money.
  • You want a new car frequently.
  • You’re okay with having a car payment.

  • You qualify to write off the lease. (Check with your accountant.)

Why You Should Finance a Car:

  • A higher monthly payment is okay by your bank account.
  • You drive a lot.

  • Your cars tend to have a few dings, scratches and “character.”
  • You want to stop making payments at some point.

As the price of new cars continues to rise, Americans are increasingly turning to leased vehicles, which allow them to have a late-model ride while keeping their monthly payments in check.

In the third quarter of 2016, nearly one in three new vehicles were leased, a 10 percent increase over the previous year, according to Experian. “Leasing is particularly popular with younger drivers who have a different sense of ownership and change cell phones every few years,” says Phil Reed, an automotive writer with NerdWallet.

Just like a loan, the terms of a lease are up for negotiation along with the price of a car. Follow these steps if you’re considering a lease to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal:

1.     Make sure you’re a good candidate for a lease. 
In general, buying a car rather than leasing it more economical over the long-term, and it’s one that gets better the longer you hold onto the car. That’s because you’ll eventually pay off your car loan (ideally in five years or less) and have a vehicle that still has some trade-in value. Buying a car also gives you the flexibility to sell the vehicle whenever you want, drive it without worrying about the accumulating mileage, and the ability to decide whether you want to pay for potentially pricey cosmetic damage.

However, if you don’t use your car to commute, and you like having a brand new vehicle every few years, you’ll spend less on monthly lease payments than you will buying multiple new cars. “Leases are also good for people who are interested not only in the performance of a vehicle but also in having the latest technology,” says Scot Hall, executive vice president of SwapaLease.com, a site helps match people who want to get out of their lease with someone who’d like to take it over. “People are OK with having a monthly expense if it allows them to have the latest technology in their car, and the newest safety devices.”

2.     Make sure the car is a good candidate.
Since your monthly payment is based on the residual value of the vehicle when you return, cars that hold their value the longest make the best leases. Check out Kelley Blue Book’s Best Resale Value Awards to see which cars might top this list.

Some experts also recommend leasing rather than buying electric cars, since the technology is advancing so quickly that models a few years old may quickly become obsolete.

3.     Negotiate the price of the car first.
Before you go to the dealer spend some time online researching the MSRP of the model you’d like and checking places sites like TrueCar to get a sense of what they’re selling for in your area. Take a test drive and nail down a price with the dealer before you mention that you want to lease the vehicle. 

And do your homework. “Whether you’re buying or leasing… spending a few hours online could save you thousands of dollars,” says Michael Harley of Kelley Blue Book, which also offers a pricing guide.” 

4.     Don’t overpay your drive-off fee.
Similar to a down payment for a financed purchase, the drive-off fee is the cash you pay up front on a lease. The higher your drive-off fee, the lower your monthly payment will be. Given that the car will start to depreciate as soon as you leave the lot, you want to put as little money down upfront as possible.

If the car is stolen or totaled early on in the lease, you’ll still owe for the remaining payments, and the amount owed may be than the insured value of the car. Gap insurance, included in most leases, will help cover the outstanding payments, but you’ll never get back the money paid for that drive-off fee. (If gap insurance isn’t included in your lease, your auto insurer may have a policy you can purchase.)

5.     Stick with a three-year lease.
Dealers are increasingly offering longer-term four or five years leases, which can make a significant difference in your monthly payments. Avoid those deals, even if it means buying a slightly cheaper car. 

Most manufacturers’ warranties expire after the first three years. If you lease a car for longer than that, you’ll be on the hook for anything that goes wrong after the warranty expires. From a financial perspective, you don’t want to pay for a pricey new transmission or air conditioner just a few months before you have to return the vehicle to the dealer.

6.     Be conservative about estimating your miles.
Most advertised leases include an allotment for 10,000 per year, but you can also get a deal that allows you to drive 12,000 or 15,000 miles per year. If you go over that amount, you’ll have to pay the penalty to the dealer, usually about 15 cents per mile, which can add up quickly. You’ll be better off paying a little bit extra in your monthly payments for more allotted miles than paying the penalty on the backend.

7.     Have an emergency fund.
Take some of the money you’re saving on lower lease payments and set aside. While mechanical difficulties with the car are typically covered by the warranty, you’ll be responsible for fixing any damage to the interior or exterior of the car, and may have to pay for new tires if the tread has worn down while you’ve driven the car.
