Arrow Recap: Thrown for a Loop — What Pre-Crisis Lesson Did Oliver Learn? https://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-thrown-for-a-loop-what-pre-crisis-lesson-did-oliver-learn/ https://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-thrown-for-a-loop-what-pre-crisis-lesson-did-oliver-learn/#respond Wed, 27 Nov 2019 07:36:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrow-recap-thrown-for-a-loop-what-pre-crisis-lesson-did-oliver-learn/

RELATED STORIES

This week on Arrow — in the penultimate pre-Crisis episode — Lyla threw Oliver for quite a loop. How did this unusual odyssey prepare him for the cosmic battle to come?

As teased by director David Ramsey, this “alternate reality” escapade evoked the likes of Groundhog Day, Russian Doll and, yes, “that Tom Cruise movie,” Laurel. Oliver kept waking up in his Star City apartment at 6:27 pm, only to be told by an arriving Mia, William and Connor that he was late for a fundraiser (for the Star City Vigilante Pilot Program, Rene later informs us). During his first trip to the soiree, Oliver sees and confronts Diggle and then Lyla herself about the whole “tranq dart on rooftop” thing, but they brush it off as a misunderstanding — that Lyla has been working as a double agent.

Oliver then learns that the mayor with whom he is giving a joint speech is Quentin Lance, who, yes, got shot years ago by Diaz, but just barely survived. When a hostage situation arises at the SCPD, Quentin insists on going in to talk to the armed mercs, as requested, while Oliver sneaks in through the back. Oliver manages to disarm the lead tough, but not before he triggered a bomb in the basement, killing everyone.

Arrow 8x06Oliver then woke up back on his couch, 6:27 again, determined to dodge the bomb this time around. But no matter what he tries, and even with a similarly time loop-ing Laurel’s help, they can’t seem to not fall down the stairs keep Quentin alive. During one  of Quentin’s final “deaths,” Laurel opens up about how he is/was the reason she has tried to become a hero — to which not-quite-her-father responds, “Sweetheart, you are a hero.” Laurel then says she never had a chance to express how much Quentin meant to her, except in saying that, she just did. Laurel realizes that all she ever wanted was a chance say a proper good-bye to Quentin, and now she has. And with his latest passing, she vanishes from the ongoing time loop.

The next go-round, in the bunker, Lyla explains to Oliver that Laurel got what she needed from this exercise, and now The Monitor needs Oliver to understand that the only way to “win” is to accept the inevitable. Oliver however tries to again to save Quentin, but even Lance knows his number was rightly up the day Diaz shot him, that after outrunning death for so long, that time was different. He has made peace with his fate, and Oliver should, too.

When Lance’s latest death triggers another reset, this time Oliver starts out by avowing to Mia, William and Connor  what a gift it has been to get to know them, and how proud he is of them. Then, at the fundraiser, he pulls Quentin aside to… ask what made him decide, years ago, that Star City’s resident vigilante was his enemy anymore. Quentin says that his daughters’ opinions played a huge role toward leading him to realize they shared the same goals. Oliver then confused Lance a bit by lamenting this second good-bye, before shaking his hand and walking away.

Lyla meets up with Oliver and congratulate him for now understanding that just as he couldn’t change Lance’s fate, nor can he change his own. And he is the kind of person who has always needed to see things for himself. Lyla confirms that she has worked with the Monitor for a while now, and keeping that secret from John was the hardest thing she ever had to do. But she did it for the same reason that Oliver walked away from Felicity and baby Mia, to protect family. A Crisis is coming, she asserts, and all they can do is try to survive it. With it comes an evil “greater than anything we have ever had to face,” and Oliver is they only chance they have of stopping it.

But first, is it time for Oliver’s final mission, which starts off with him and Laurel waking up inside a tent, outside of which they find Diggle, Mia, William, Connor…

… and Lian Yu.

WOW

There are some huge ties in the last 16.

Liverpool and Manchester United look to have got the worst of it, with Jurgen Klopp’s side set to face Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho and United set to take on Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester City will be happy having drawn Schalke.

Meanwhile, Tottenham face Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund

LIVERPOOL VS BAYERN MUNICH

TOTTENHAM VS BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Lyon vs Barcelona

Roma vs Porto

Ajax vs Real Madrid

MANCHESTER UNITED VS PSG

It does not get any easier for Under-pressure Jose Mourinho as they are drawn against the French giants.

Elsewhere, Juventus get Atletico Madrid

MANCHESTER CITY VS SCHALKE

Pep Guardiola’s side avoid Atletico Madrid and the boss will surely be delighted with that draw.

FORMER LIVERPOOL STAR MAKES AN APPEARANCE

Former Liverpool star Luis Garcia and PSG player Lara Georges take got the stage and will draw the teams.

Garcia’s ‘ghost goal’ helped Liverpool to the final in 2005, where Steven Gerrard inspired them to come from 3-0 down and beat AC Milan on penalties.

We are now ready to proceed with the draw……

VAR THIS VAR THAT

UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti takes to the stage.

He will be guiding us through the draw and pays tribute to Ajax and Lyon for making the knockout stage after years in the wilderness.

He also reminds us that VAR will be introduced in the knockout stage and says UEFA are excited by the prospect of it coming in.

They telling that to Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian claimed VAR would have deemed that Virgil van Dijk should have been sent off in Liverpool’s win over Napoli to secure the last 16 place.

NOT LONG NOW…

Incredibly, it looks like we might get underway very shortly.

These draws are notorious for dragging on and being delayed.

But, we’re all set here and Pedro Pinto has addressed the crowd before introducing a video of the highlights from the group stage.

Just seen some of top-scorer Robert Lewandowski’s best bits this season. His Bayern Munich side lie in wait for three of the four English teams.

DOESN’T MATA WHO WE GET

The draw is just ten minutes away and Manchester United’s Juan Mata sounds confident despite the prospect of facing one of the competition’s big guns.

“We have to wait and see who we play against,” he said.

“We have to believe that we can beat whoever it is. It is going to be a difficult team because obviously the teams that qualified are very good.”

Virgil van Dijk

VAN DIJK DREAMS OF GLORY

Virgil van Dijk is hoping Liverpool can go one better than last year.

The Reds were beaten by Real Madrid in a thrilling final And the Dutchman is desperate to get his hands on the trophy this time around.

“We want to reach the maximum and hopefully do better than we did last year in the Champions League,” Van Dijk said.

“You need to have dreams, you need to go for it, otherwise why would you be a footballer?”

GOTZE EYES KLOPP REUNION

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could face former club Borussia Dortmund in the last 16.

And his ex-player Mario Gotze has spoken about the prospect of a reunion.

“That would be a tough test,” the German playmaker said.

“Let’s wait and see what happens. Regardless of which opponent you get in the Champions League last 16, it will be tense and very, very tough.”

JOSE’S TOP FOUR CLAIM

Does United boss Jose Mourinho might need to win the Champions League to stand any chance of getting in to the competition next season?

Well, Mourinho is having none of it despite his side being a whopping 11 points off the top four after Sunday’s defeat by Liverpool.

“Yes, I think (we can),” he said. “What gives me that belief? It gives me the belief that we are going to make much more points in the second part of the season than we did in the first part.”

“I know we lost some other matches but we played away at Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City – probably the three best teams apart from Tottenham.

“But we play with them away. I think we have more possibility to get more points in the second part of the season than the first part.”

HOW THE DRAW WORKS

Just a quick reminder as to how this works – in case you didn’t already know.

No teams from the same country can be drawn against each other and teams who qualified from the same group will be kept apart for this round.

Seeded teams will have the advantage – if it is one – of playing the first leg away from home.

Just looking at the potential opponents for the unseeded English teams and it makes for some scary reading. Porto must be the one team they all want.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham are all facing the prospect of a very tough draw, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich a potential opponent for all three of them.

We are due to get underway at 11am. But, as I’m sure you know, these things have a habit of being delayed.

‘Time to learn from the French!’ Yellow Vest protests spread to Israel, 10 arrested (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/time-to-learn-from-the-french-yellow-vest-protests-spread-to-israel-10-arrested-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/time-to-learn-from-the-french-yellow-vest-protests-spread-to-israel-10-arrested-videos/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 23:50:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/time-to-learn-from-the-french-yellow-vest-protests-spread-to-israel-10-arrested-videos/

Outraged by the rising cost of living and price hikes on basic services, Israeli citizens who were inspired by the French Yellow Vest movement took to the streets of Tel Aviv demanding concessions from the government.

Wearing bright fluorescent yellow vests, symbolic of the French grassroots movement, some 600 Israeli activists blocked the Azrieli intersection and adjacent roads in the city center, accusing the government of “robbing” the people.

Concerned over the rising price of electricity, water and food, organizers stressed that the “time has come to learn from the French” and that they are “done being nice.” The crowd boldly advised Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet to address their grievances before the “entire country is on fire.”

Their voices were suppressed, however, by police who arrested at least 10 people for disorderly conduct after the crowd paralyzed the city. While being dragged away, one of the organizers, David Mizrahi, warned the officers that “next week there will be 10,000 people.”

The social protest movement, which claims it is not politically motivated, is expected to rise in the coming weeks, after the National Union of Israeli Students called for a mass mobilization in Tel Aviv on December 22. As the Israeli capital gears up to face citizens’ discontent, the Knesset’s Economic Affairs Committee will meet next week to discuss commodity prices.

France, meanwhile, is bracing for the fifth round of Yellow Vest protests on Saturday, after a set of economic concessions announced by President Emanuel Macron to address the social grievances failed to fully appease protesters.

Legacies Recap: What Did Hope Learn About Malivore (and Klaus' Fate)? https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-what-did-hope-learn-about-malivore-and-klaus-fate/ https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-what-did-hope-learn-about-malivore-and-klaus-fate/#respond Fri, 14 Dec 2018 07:13:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-what-did-hope-learn-about-malivore-and-klaus-fate/

Legacies‘ fall finale felt a little like Silence of the Lambs, subbing in Hope Mikaelson for Clarice Starling and replacing Hannibal Lecter with a twisted necromancer who’s way too charming for his own good. (I’m not the only one who finds him charming, right? Like, in a Jack Sparrow meets your worst nightmare kind of way?)

Anyway, Hope paid the show’s latest creature a visit on Thursday to learn more about Malivore, but I think we can all agree that what Hope really learned about… was herself. Within minutes of entering the Necromancer’s subconscious, she found herself back at Rousseau’s, where the gross-faced ghoul repeatedly tricked her into thinking she was about to see her father. (Falsely promising us Joseph Morgan is honestly the cruelest trick this guy could ever pull!)

And the taunting only got worse from there. “You want to know how your dad is, or should I say where he is,” the Necromancer told her. “After all, he did die to save your life — a lovely gesture for such a mercurial man.” Even after being temporarily ejected from the Necromancer’s subconscious, Hope powered through, insisting that she’s made peace with her father’s death. (Well, that makes one of us.)

Hope eventually broke down, admitting that she needed to know whether or not Klaus is spending eternity with someone. (“No one should ever have to be alone like this!”) But just as she arrived at this breakthrough, she was once again ejected from the Necromancer’s subconscious — and right into an argument with Alaric.

And those two got a lot off their chests: Alaric told her she isn’t letting herself grieve, Hope accused him of having a drinking problem, and they once again established that he is not her father. (Speaking of him being a father, where were Lizzie and Josie this week? Did I miss a line about them?)

In the end, Hope got the answers she was looking for: Malivore, which was designed to “wipe the scourge of the supernatural,” can be unlocked by three keys, the knife being one of them. Additionally, the Necromancer delivered a Klaus update: “He watches over you every day. He did die with love in his heart, and he doesn’t regret his choice. But he won’t find peace until you do. Good luck with that.”

While the Necromancer kept Hope distracted with this news, one of his zombies — Rafael’s girlfriend Cassie, who helped him remember that he caused her death — stole the knife and helped send it to Malivore. With the knife destroyed, the first seal is broken… and the Necromancer is free. Gulp.

Also worth discussing…

* I loved all the throwback references in this episode — first Rousseau’s from The Originals, then Damon’s “snatch, eat, erase” technique, then one of the zombies turning out to be a Bennett witch. I even enjoyed Dorian’s speech about Stefan murdering his parents. (There’s no such thing as an unflattering reference, OK?)

* Speaking of Dorian, I’m glad he nipped MG’s non-bunny diet in the bud before he totally lost control. MG’s one of the good ones, so I need him to hold it together.

* I hope to write about it at length in the coming weeks, but if I don’t get around to it, let me say it here: I’m honestly blown away by this show. I had my reservations at first, but it has established a firm identity — especially with these last three episodes — and I’m hooked. Characters are complex and engaging, and the mythology is unfolding at an intriguing pace. Kudos, all.

Artifact beta: home screen

Enlarge / It’s a beta! A beta that will take your money. (credit: Valve Software)

Valve’s next video game, a card-battling computer game called Artifact, will be a tricky one to review for a few reasons. For one, it inevitably comes with the baggage of being “Valve’s next video game.” Whatever Artifact is, it isn’t one of the company’s innovative first-person shooters.

But the bigger issue, for a review’s sake, applies to any modern card game: cards, cards, cards. The genre’s fun and strategy depends on hundreds of these things. Exactly how many are there? How do they interact with each other? And how do players get their hands on more of them?

We can start answering those questions with the Artifact beta, into which Valve sneaked us ahead of the closed-beta period (that period is supposed to start on Monday the 19th for anyone who claimed a beta key at various expos like PAX West). With only one day of play under our belts, we cannot come close to “reviewing” what’s on offer thus far.
