Frustratingly enough, the argument about whether or not the classic action thriller Die Hard is a Christmas movie is still going strong. A recent poll showed most people don’t think it qualifies for the holiday mantle, and we’ve had passionate discussions about it on /Film Daily, but now 20th Century Fox is making the push to have Die Hard entered into the Christmas canon by not only calling it the “greatest Christmas story ever told,” but by releasing a new holiday edition of the movie, and a trailer to really hit it home.

Watch the Die Hard Christmas trailer below and continue this exhausting fight.

Die Hard Christmas Trailer

The trailer cuts the movie more like something akin to Home Alone. Even greater is that it brings back the use of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” which, much like Die Hard, isn’t explicitly a Christmas song, but can easily be played during the holiday season and provides great joy to everyone.

If that’s not enough to push the Die Hard Christmas agenda, 20th Century Fox also delivered this poem:

Twas the night before Christmas, at Nakatomi Plaza,
The office party was festive, but soon interrupted by drama.
Hans Gruber and his men, had forced their way in,
And taken everyone hostage, trapping them within.
But how could they know, there was a cop up above,
John McClane had arrived, to win back his wife’s love.
He would take them all out, winning everyone’s praise,
Welcoming Christmas Day, with his favorite catchphrase.

YIPPEE KI YAY!

If this has you itching for a Christmas rewatch of Die Hard, there’s also a special 30th anniversary Blu-ray release of the movie that has a cover looking like an ugly Christmas sweater. On top of that, all five of the Die Hard movies are also available on 4K HD Blu-ray right now.

Dancing on Ice 2018: Christopher Dean leans in to KISS dance partner Jayne Torvill https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2018-christopher-dean-leans-in-to-kiss-dance-partner-jayne-torvill/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2018-christopher-dean-leans-in-to-kiss-dance-partner-jayne-torvill/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 02:53:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-on-ice-2018-christopher-dean-leans-in-to-kiss-dance-partner-jayne-torvill/

The skating professional looked like he was trying to plant a smacker on the lips of his long-term dance partner after commending Max Evans and Ale Izquierdo on their believable chemistry.

Shortly after awarding Max 5.5 points, Christopher complimented the star for maintaining good eye contact with Ale.

Speaking directly to Max, he said: “What I really liked was the connection that everybody is talking about and the eye contact, that is what gives the intimate part of it when your skating.”

The 59-year-old then turned to Jayne, 60, held her closely and went in for a kiss.

Teasingly, the figure skater stopped just before their lips met before quickly turning his attention back to Max, 34.

Understandably, the audience went wild and cheered for the pair to actually kiss.

Even Dancing on Ice hosts, Holly Willoughby  and Phillip Schofield couldn’t resist getting involved too.

From the side of the rink, Phillip, 55, shouted: “I remember that!”

While, Holly, 36, quipped: “Steady on! Steady on!”

Later, Christopher told Max: “Well it’s all about the eye contact and you had loads of that. Well done!”

Elsewhere on the show, judge Ashley Banjo teased rugby player Max and Ale for their convincing chemistry.

The 29-year-old praised Max, 34, for the pair’s impressive routine before adding: “I loved that. Slowly paced routines are more exposing, not just for the routine but for the connection between the two of you.

“I don’t know what’s going on between the two of you but I love it.”

Neither Max or Ale responded to Ashely’s comments, which was unsurprising given Max’s relationship status.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Max had split from his wife of four years, American actress Katy Marie Johnson, 29, in early 2017.

The couple had struggled to make it work with their opposing work commitments.

Dancing On Ice airs Sundays at 6pm on ITV.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ works because it leans into laughs and weird moments more than any other Marvel movie https://briefnews.eu/thor-ragnarok-works-because-it-leans-into-laughs-and-weird-moments-more-than-any-other-marvel-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/thor-ragnarok-works-because-it-leans-into-laughs-and-weird-moments-more-than-any-other-marvel-movie/#respond Tue, 31 Oct 2017 15:06:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thor-ragnarok-works-because-it-leans-into-laughs-and-weird-moments-more-than-any-other-marvel-movie/ ThorRagnarok2MarvelMarvel

  • This is the third Thor movie in the franchise and it’s very different.
  • The laughs and weird moments are what you’ll remember most.
  • But sadly Cate Blanchett as the villain is one-note and is often just doing a strange, Enchantress from “Suicide Squad” walk. (Come on, Marvel!)

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.

It seems after two “Thor” movies, Marvel decided to do a huge pivot in tone for its third, and thank goodness it did.

Not to say that “Thor” (2011) and “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) aren’t good — they aren’t the best Marvel movies, but they are definitely watchable — but we all needed a change from the super-serious family drama surrounding the son of Odin.

Enter filmmaker Taika Waititi. Waititi has an outlandish style highlighted in his out-there indie films (“What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”), and he brought the perfect new feel to Thor.

ThorRagnarok4MarvelMarvelIf you’re a Marvel Cinematic Universe fanatic, you know that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) have been out doing their own things since “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), and didn’t appear in “Captain America: Civil War.” (In “Doctor Strange,” Thor appeared in the end credits.)

In “Ragnarok” (in theaters on Friday) we find out what they’ve been up to.

After a stint trying to track down the Infinity Stones, we find Thor on his way back to his home of Asgard, as word is that Ragnarok, a giant battle foretold to lead to the ultimate destruction of Asgard, is coming. He returns to find Loki (Tom Hiddleston) ruling the world disguised as their father Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Needing to warn his father about Ragnarok, Thor makes Loki take him to where he left their father. After a funny cameo by Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the brothers find Odin, who is on the verge of death. He reveals that there is an even greater evil that’s to come, Hela (Cate Blanchett), the sister they never knew they had. Following a quick battle, Thor and Loki find themselves on the planet Sakaar where they meet a bunch of interesting characters, including Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (voiced by Waititi), Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum), and Hulk, who has been on the planet for two years. They team up to head back to Asgard to take down Hela.

Sounds like a cut-and-dry Marvel movie, huh?

Well, along with the usual exposition, the movie is filled with deadpan jokes and is-this-scene-really-in-a-Marvel-movie moments. From Thor and Hulk sitting on a bed talking about their feelings, to Goldblum being his most Goldblum, “Ragnarok” is an enjoyable break from the more “serious” issues explored in the MCU.

ThorRagnarok3MarvelMarvel“Ragnarok” certainly isn’t the first Marvel movie to be fun. All MCU titles have taken pride in having a playful mix of laughs and action (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” are recent examples).

But what Waititi brings to “Ragnarok” is a step beyond that.

Every funny remark or action in “Ragnarok” is extended further, and what comes out of that is a playful tone that is a nice break to the mind-numbing violence.

It’s also nice to see Hemsworth being allowed to show off his comic chops beyond just a line here or there in the previous two movies.

But that’s not to say the movie is perfect.

There are points when the momentum stops for (ugh) plot. Most of the movie is split up between Thor and his “Revengers” trying to get off Sakaar, and the evil things Hela is doing on Asgard. The shift to the action on Asgard is dull and by-the-numbers.

Sadly, Blanchett doesn’t help in this part of the movie. Like most superhero movie villains, Hela is bland and predictable. Blanchett has a few chances to get in on the fun, and throw out a witty line of two, but often she’s impaling things (or people) with the unlimited swords she can summon and doing a distracting Enchantress from “Suicide Squad” walk.

TV spot

Cinephiles rejoice anytime writer/director Darren Aronofsky makes a new movie, because love him or hate him, his films always give us plenty to talk about. That’s especially true with mother!, his horror thriller that’s been ripping audiences apart since it made its festival debut. The film is so divisive, in fact, that it earned a rare “F” CinemaScore when it opened in wider release last week and even inspired Paramount Pictures to release a statement defending their decision to distribute the film in the first place.

Paramount has been knocked over by a wave here, but instead of sputtering and quietly crawling back to the shore, the studio is embracing the film’s polarizing response and defiantly turning toward the ocean, arms spread wide and chin held high, ready to be sent sprawling by the next one crashing toward them.

It’s rare that a studio reacts to a divisive film like this, but it reminds me a little of the way 20th Century Fox included bad reviews of Fight Club in that film’s home video release, almost daring audiences to watch the movie. I applaud Paramount for standing by their movie and their director here, because they easily could have taken a different path here.

mother! is indeed an intense experience, culminating in a third act that’s one of the most surprising things a major studio has released in years. In his review from the Toronto International Film Festival, /Film’s Chris Evangelista writes:

…it’s hard not to at least appreciate a film that is so wholly committed to going insane. The last stretch of mother! is an anarchic nightmare, filled with scenes that appear to be trying to one-up each other in terms of shocking material. Aronofsky’s script doesn’t pull its punches, and the horrific imagery begins to come fast and furious, one shocking moment on top of another, to the point that you might find yourself dizzy from it all.

Ultimately, I’d recommend going out and seeing the movie for yourself, because at the very least you’ll have a lot of thoughts about it and a ton of great things to read afterward. As for what the film is actually about, you can read Aronofsky’s thoughts on the matter here, or our own Josh Spiegel’s spoiler review, which grapples with the movie’s allegories in a comprehensive and satisfying way. Plus, /Filmcast host David Chen wrote a smart piece about the film’s five most interesting aspects that’s also worth digging into.

mother! is in theaters right now.

A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

Beams leans on old Magpie mates https://briefnews.eu/beams-leans-on-old-magpie-mates/ https://briefnews.eu/beams-leans-on-old-magpie-mates/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2017 06:18:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beams-leans-on-old-magpie-mates/

AFL: A new era is underway at Hawthorn, and Jarryd Roughead seems to have no problem stepping into his new role.

Brisbane Captain Dayne Beams.

Lauren WoodHerald Sun

NICK Maxwell and Scott Pendlebury will serve as inspiration for new Brisbane Lions skipper Dayne Beams as he hopes to become the most well-rounded leader he can be.

The former Pie was appointed to the role last month and admitted that he “wasn’t a very good leader” when he was elevated to leadership group responsibilities at Collingwood in 2012.

“I’ve matured a lot since I left Collingwood,” Beams said today.

“You look back at it now and I learned a lot off guys like (former Collingwood captain) Nick Maxwell and Scott Pendlebury that you didn’t really know that you were learning back then.

“Until you’re out of there and mature enough to realise that you don’t really understand how good a leaders those guys were.”

He caught up with Pendlebury at the league’s annual captain’s day at the MCG and said Maxwell will be a valuable source to tap into.

“Not in particular in the last couple of weeks (have I contacted anyone in particular), but I still try and catch up with Nick when I come back to Melbourne — I’m still great friends with him,” Beams said.

“He’s been the best captain that I’ve ever played under. I’ve just tried to pick apart not only Nick, but guys like Scott and Tom Rockliff. I’ve picked bits and pieces out of their leadership styles and tried to add it to my own.

“I want to be my own leader as well as interrelating and adding things those guys have done well.”

Beams will be supported in the Lions’ leadership ranks by now-former skipper Rockliff, who he said has won back the respect of the playing group after a tumultuous 2016.

“He would admit himself that he wouldn’t have expected to be captain of the footy club at the end of last year. And he was right in contention to be the captain again,” Beams said.

“To have the boys think highly enough of him in that regard, he’s done an amazing amount of work over the last four or five months to earn that respect back.

“He copped a fair whack (after talk he wanted out and disappointment from the club after a disrespectful tweet) … he’s been able to put his head down and work hard. I’m looking forward to Tom’s support and I’m going to lean on him over the next year. He’s definitely someone I’m going to need in my corner.”

Thirteen Herald Sun football magazine experts recently tipped the Lions to win this year’s wooden spoon, with Beams adamant that setting a pass mark of wins is not on the team’s agenda.

“We’re after constant improvement and development,” he said.

“We haven’t put any markers around wins or losses, but we’re expecting to improve.”
