The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church compared dying in the war against Ukraine to an act of "sacrifice" and that doing so absolved soldiers of their "sins."
Patriarch Kirill I made his remarks on Sunday, days after Russia announced a "partial mobilization" of troops, and men continue to be seen fleeing the country to avoid the draft.
—Matthew Luxmoore (@mjluxmoore) September 26, 2022
"Many are dying on the fields of internecine warfare," Kirill said, according to a translation by Reuters. "The Church prays that this battle will end as soon as possible, so that as few brothers as possible will kill each other in this fratricidal war."
"But at the same time, the Church realizes that if somebody, driven by a sense of duty and the need to fulfill their oath … goes to do what their duty calls of them, and if a person dies in the performance of this duty, then they have undoubtedly committed an act equivalent to sacrifice. They will have sacrificed themselves for others. And therefore, we believe that this sacrifice washes away all the sins that a person has committed," he said, according to Reuters.
Kirill is known to be a supporter of President Vladimir Putin and of the invasion of Ukraine.
He previously justified the war as a fight against "excess consumption" and "gay parades" infiltrating Ukraine, according to The Orthodox Times. Kirill has also described Putin's leadership as a "miracle of God."
Putin announced on September 21 a "partial mobilization" of 300,000 military troops — an act seen as an escalation of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Almost immediately, one-way flight tickets out of Russia sold out and internet searches for "how to leave Russia" spiked in the country.
Lines of cars have packed Russia's borders with Georgia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and other countries, according to The Associated Press.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shared her memories with Queen Elizabeth II as funeral processions have begun for the late monarch.
On CNN's "State of the Union" with Dana Bash on Sunday, Clinton said she and Queen Elizabeth II would sometimes share "wry" comments about being women leaders on an international stage.
"I can't say that I talked at any length. Sometimes, there would be a wry exchange about how, as a woman leader, you always had to have your hair done," Clinton said on Sunday. "Of course, she always looked perfect, unlike some of us. She had a sense of style that really stayed with her."

Clinton described the late Queen as a "symbol of a strong, stalwart woman leader."
"I knew that her sense of who she was and the role she played literally governed her life, from every second of it," Clinton said, adding that she heard an interesting statistic that nine out of 10 people alive in the world today were born after she became Queen Elizabeth took the throne.

Clinton praised the Queen for her "devotion to duty and her sense of obligation" to her people.
"But I also saw a more playful and somewhat funny and very, incredibly warm side of her as well," Clinton said. "All of the presidents, all of the prime ministers, everyone that she met, I think, saw that twinkle in her eye, and maybe were lucky enough to exchange pleasantries that went beyond just the official greetings."
Clinton added: "And that's how I felt. I felt very fortunate to see her in different settings over the time that I knew her as first lady and then secretary of state."

Before his death, Mikhail Gorbachev said the Capitol riot threw the future of the United States into uncertainty.
The day after the attack, the former leader of the USSR told Russian news agency Interfax the events "called into question the future fate of the United States as a state," multiple news outlets reported.
Gorbachev went on to say that "the storming of the Capitol was clearly planned in advance, and it's obvious by whom," although he did not specify whom he was referring to, according to The Moscow Times.
"It will take a little time, and we will figure it out, why it was really done," Gorbachev said, according to Just The News.
Gorbachev was the last leader of the Soviet Union before it dissolved in 1991. He died at the age of 91 on August 30, according to Russian news outlets.
As president, Gorbachev himself was a target of a failed coup d'etat during the final months of his leadership. And many commentators on the January 6 Capitol riot drew parallels to what's now known as the August Coup.
On August 18, 1991, hardliners in the Soviet Union Communist Party — including members of Gorbachev's administration — attempted to oust their country's leader by placing him under house arrest and demanding he resign. Gorbachev refused, but leaders of the coup disseminated an announcement anyway, claiming that the leader was ill and removed from his position. The Russian military and demonstrators soon swarmed the Russian White House and protestors turned against the hardliners.
Soldiers began to flee — while some decided to join the demonstrators — and the coup fell apart within three days.
Gorbachev returned to Moscow and regained control on August 22, 1991. He resigned as president of the Soviet Union later that year, on December 25.

Piers Morgan claimed Michael Gove impressed him the most as Conservative leadership candidates officially put themselves forward for the job of leader and Prime Minister on Monday. Five leadership contestants delivered speeches as they outlined what they would do if they were elected as leader of the Conservative Party. Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, host Piers Morgan explained which contestant impressed him the most, branding them “highly intelligent”.
He said: “Yesterday, there were five launches, of other contenders yesterday. Some better than others, some very theatrical, Matt Hancock.
“But, I actually thought Michael Gove, notwithstanding the barrage about drugs, I thought he had the most professional launch.
“I thought he sounded intelligent, he played up his experience, in several big departments.
“And opinion divided, but one thing people say about Gove and it has certainly been my experience, he is highly intelligent, certainly got the experience over most of the other contenders I would say.
“He probably has a slight issue in terms of relatability to the public.
“But, in terms of his general capability for the job of Prime Minister, because we need somebody good in this job”.
Later, the Good Morning Britain host added that Mr Gove’s ability to bounce back from criticism over taking cocaine 20-years ago, and handle the pressure, shows “leadership skills”.
He said: “What I thought was impressive about Michael Gove was the way he took it all on yesterday and it didn’t look like it phased him or knocked him off course. That in itself shows me leadership skills.”
Five Tory leadership contestants launched their campaigns on Monday as they put themselves forward to take over from Mrs May.

Environment Secretary Mr Gove, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab and former work and pensions secretary Esther McVey all delivered speeches on how to take the country forward.
Mr Gove has faced criticism during his bid for the top job after he admitted to the use of class A drug, cocaine, 20-years ago.
During his speech on Monday, Mr Gove took a swipe at fellow candidates saying the new leader needs to be someone who has been “tested in the heat of battle” and not one who has been “hiding in their bunker”.
Regarding Brexit, Mr Gove said it was “not enough to believe in Brexit you’ve also got to be able to deliver it”, insisting he has “a proper plan”.
This week candidates the 10 candidates will take part in Conservative Party hustings, before the first ballot on June 13.
Candidates will need to win five percent of the vote (a total of 17 MPs) to move on to the next round – if they don’t, they’ll be eliminated from the race.
A second ballot for leader will then take place between June 18 and June 20, where MPs will need to secure 10 percent of the vote (a total of 33 MPs) to stay in the race.
The final pair of candidates will begin hustings events in front of paid-up Conservative Party members, before the final vote from members on July 22.
Game of Thrones has finally come to an end after eight series of stories. Yet a number of plot points remain not quite tied up. In particular, fans have been left wondering why Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) didn’t become the leader of the Dothraki after killing their Khaleesi Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Game of Thrones season 8
The last ever episode of Game of Thrones saw Jon kill Daenerys in a dramatic moment.
After revealing her descent into madness as she showed no mercy to the inhabitants of King’s Landing, Jon believed he had no other choice than to kill her.
While this sealed his fate to be exiled to Castle Black and reunite with the Night’s Watch, fans have been wondering why things didn’t go another way.
Especially as having killed Daenerys, who was the Khaleesi of the Dothraki, some wondered why he did not become their leader.
WHICH GAME OF THRONES FINALE SCENE HAD THE WATER BOTTLE MISTAKE?
On the online message board Stack Exchange, user Budyn asked why did the Dothraki not follow Jon.
He wrote: “As we know from previous seasons, if you kill a Khal you become a Khal and Dothraki will treat you as their leader.
“There was no mention of them after Daenerys dies, so what could happen?”
This idea comes from how the Dothraki accepted Daenerys as their ruler after she kills the Khals in season six.
Although some have argued that this is likely to only be the case as she was married to Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).
User Lukas84 replied: “I’m not sure that this rule applies to just everyone – it looks more likely that you actually need to be a Dothraki to become a Khal.
“They accepted Dany because of the miracle by which she killed the other Khals, plus she was a Dothraki by marriage and she could speak their tongue.”
Another user TheLethalCarrot added: “The Dothraki follow strength above all else, betraying someone and stabbing an unexpected victim is more a sign of weakness to the Dothraki than strength so I doubt they would follow him for killing the current Khal[essi].”
In fact, it seems likely that the death of Khalessi would cause the Dothraki to wish to take revenge.
Which also left many fans wondering why the Dothraki did not kill Jon immediately after he murdered Daenerys.
WILL THERE BE AN ARYA STARK GAME OF THRONES SPIN-OFF SERIES?
However, while Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) speaks of the Unsullied’s reaction to her death, the Dothraki are not mentioned in the final episode.
One possibility could be that Jon confessed to Grey Worm immediately afterwards to accept his punishment, giving no time for reaction.
What’s more, even if Jon Snow did have some kind of a claim to lead them, it’s unlikely he would pursue it.
Throughout this season he has said he does not want to sit on the Iron Throne and he was a reluctant King of the North in earlier series.
This is one of the many questions that have remained unanswered in the wake of the finale.
Fans were also left wondering where Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) went during the Battle of Winterfell as well as where Drogon took Daenerys Targaryen’s body.

The Wednesday rollout of Waymo One, Waymo’s commercial self-driving taxi service, falls far short of expectations the company itself set earlier in the year.
In late September, a Waymo spokeswoman told Ars by email that the Phoenix service would be fully driverless and open to members of the public—claims I reported in this article.
We now know that Waymo One won’t be fully driverless; there will be a driver in the driver’s seat. And Waymo One is open to the public in only the narrowest, most technical sense: initially it will only be available to early riders—the same people who have been participating in Waymo’s test program for months.
This seems to be the latest sign that Waymo’s technology is progressing more slowly than a lot of people expected—including Waymo’s own leadership a year ago. People who have observed Waymo’s vehicles on public roads in recent months report that the cars still struggle with unprotected left turns, merges, and other tricky situations.
Waymo is widely seen as the industry leader. The company began working on self-driving technology in 2009, long before most other technology and car companies started taking it seriously. So if Waymo isn’t ready to launch a fully driverless service after more than 18 months of intensive public testing, that should make us skeptical of claims from other companies that they’ll be ready to launch fully self-driving technology any time soon.
The launch of Waymo One feels less like the launch of a public, commercial service than a rebranding of its testing program. Waymo vowed to launch a commercial service before the end of the year, and Waymo One technically qualifies. But the service hardly seems more open to the public than the early rider program Waymo had last week.
In a Thursday phone conversation, a Waymo spokeswoman declined to tell me how many customers had signed up for Waymo One on the first day or how many rides they’d taken. If a lot of people were signing up, you’d expect some of them to post photos or videos on social media, but 48 hours after the official launch I haven’t been able to find any sign of people using Waymo One—and neither have other people.
I’m sure Waymo is telling the truth when it says it has invited “hundreds” of early riders to switch to Waymo One, and I assume at least a handful of people have signed up. But this is not what normally happens when a big public company launches a major new product.

I wasn’t the only reporter who was told that Waymo’s first commercial service would be fully driverless.
In March, The New York Times reported that Waymo’s Phoenix service would launch by the end of the year. Waymo “intended to move forward rapidly with a driverless ride service for the public because it was confident its vehicles could operate safely in virtually any driving situation where they would be put into use,” the Times’ Neal Boudette wrote. The same article stated that Waymo expected to be “providing as many as one million rides a day” by the end of 2019. (Update: a Waymo spokeswoman tells us that it never told the Times this.)
But in recent months, Waymo seems to have lost confidence in its fully driverless operations. The Information’s Amir Efrati reported last week that “due to concerns about safety, the Alphabet company put so-called ‘safety drivers’ back behind the wheel of its most advanced prototypes.”
Indeed, it’s not clear if fully driverless vehicles have ever accounted for a significant fraction of Waymo’s testing activities. According to an August story by Efrati, fully driverless tests have typically been “in relatively small residential areas of Chandler, Arizona, where there is little traffic.”
That squares with the experience of Ryan Randazzo, a reporter at the Arizona Republic who has covered Waymo over the last two years. Because he’s based in the Phoenix area, he’s able to regularly observe Waymo vehicles in action and talk to others in the area about the cars—including three days in October and November when he followed around Waymo vehicles to see how they perform.
“I don’t know that anyone has ever seen one without a driver in the driver seat” since Waymo first announced driverless testing in November 2017, he told Ars. “They may have done it, but they don’t tell us. I’ve asked five different ways—what percent of rides [are driverless]—they won’t answer that question.”
Over the course of October and November, Randazzo spent three days observing Waymo’s cars in action—either by following them on the roads or staking out the company’s depot in Chandler. He posted his findings in a YouTube video. The findings suggest that Waymo’s vehicles aren’t yet ready for fully autonomous operation.
“Lane changes appear to be a problem for the cars,” Randazzo says in the video. When trying to move into a crowded lane, a Waymo car seemed to lack a human driver’s ability to anticipate other drivers’ actions and squeeze into an open spot. Instead, the vehicle would turn on its turn signal and wait for a few seconds for an opening to appear. If one didn’t appear, it would turn the turn signal off and wait for a while before trying again.
“It actually took this car almost a minute and a half to change lanes here,” Randazzo said. “We talked to one person who uses these vehicles around the East Valley. He said that they sometimes miss their turns they’re so hesitant.”
In another incident, a Waymo car was part of a line of cars approaching an intersection where a car crash was blocking the right lane. The human drivers saw the issue far ahead and began shifting to the left lane. The Waymo car continued straight and only began trying to merge left when it was a few car lengths away from the traffic cones. The car then abruptly cancelled the left merge and instead went right into a turn lane—Randazzo speculates that this was the human safety driver taking over the vehicle.
That jives with a video posted to YouTube in September showing a Waymo vehicle struggling to merge onto a California freeway.
According to The Information’s Efrati, Waymo has struggled with turning from a low-speed residential street onto a major boulevard. This is also a problem The Washington Post observed during a recent Waymo test ride. The Post reported that “left turns can be painfully slow” when turning onto a major traffic artery.
With these kinds of challenges, it’s not surprising that Waymo chose to keep safety drivers in its cars. And to be clear, I don’t fault Waymo for doing this. Quite the contrary, they deserve credit for putting safety first. But if Waymo has largely halted testing with fully driverless vehicles—and there’s a lot of circumstantial evidence that they have—it would be nice if Waymo would level with the public about this.
And if even Waymo—long regarded as the industry leader—is struggling to roll out fully driverless cars, that may be a cause for skepticism that its rivals will achieve the feat any time soon. We’re going to see more and more self-driving cars on our roads. But it might be a while before we see ones that are fully driverless.

Eric Drouet, one of the Yellow Vests leaders who called on demonstrators to march towards the official residence of Emmanuel Macron, is now under investigation for organizing “unlawful protests,” French media report.
The 33-year-old truck driver, who turned into a voice of the powerful movement, made headlines on Thursday.
“Saturday will be the final outcome. Saturday it’s the Elysee. We would all like to go to the Elysee. We are all united to the end and we move on the direction of Elysee,” he said.

His words were not left unnoticed by French prosecutors who opened a probe against the activist, RTL and BFMTV report. He is being investigated over charges of “provocation to commit a crime or misdemeanor” and “organization of an unlawful event.”
Before the news of the investigation was leaked to the media, Drouet attempted to explain his ambition to reach the presidential palace.
“All people want to go there, it [Elysee] is the symbol of the [French] Republic,” he told BFMTV hosts on Thursday.
In his Facebook post he also claims that he wasn’t planning to attack the residence of Emmanuel Macron. “I call for calm and not the opposite,” he insisted.
Meanwhile France is ready to stave off another wave of massive protests called by the Yellow Vests. This Saturday they are to go under the aegis “Act IV’. Stay on the course” and are expected to draw thousands of demonstrators. The authorities are expected to deploy some 89,000 officers and armored vehicles belonging to Gendarmerie, the country’s military police.

The French government’s six-month moratorium on fuel tax hikes wasn’t what the Yellow Vests wanted, the protest’s leader has said. People want “the baguette”, not crumbs, and will take to the streets again on Saturday, he said.
“We didn’t want a suspension, we want the past increase in the tax on fuels to be canceled immediately,” Benjamin Cauchy, the organizer of the Yellow Vests movement, told BFM TV.
By announcing the half-year moratorium, government is “taking the French people for a ride” in an attempt to win time, he added.
The French are not sparrows and don’t want the crumbs the government is giving them. They want the baguette.
In another interview with La Depeche, Cauchy was asked if the violent protests, which saw more than 260 people injured and caused several deaths across France over the weekend, will continue. “The Yellow Vests wish to act on Saturday,” he replied.
However, he said that the movement must become “pacifist and non-violent”, as it used to be before the massive unrest started three weeks ago.
The group needs support from the French people and a peaceful sit-in would have a greater impact on the government than rioting, the protest leader said.

Earlier on Tuesday, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said on live TV that the planned increases in gasoline and diesel taxes as well as hikes in gas and electricity tariffs will be suspended for six months.
Philippe pointed out that the tax issue shouldn’t put “the nation’s unity in danger,” also announcing that the national debate on how to tackle climate change without burdening the wallets of French citizens will begin in mid-December.

OZY sat down with Marri to discuss Pakistani and world politics. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Hyrbyair Marri: It is an open secret that the elections were rigged and manipulated by the army, who, at the same time, backs Imran Khan [elected prime minister]. Khan has denounced the suffering of the Baloch people on more than one occasion. It is his opportunity to deliver on his promises that he made about Balochistan, but I doubt he will do anything about it. The army needs instability, a volatile scenario, which is key to keep receiving aid and funds from abroad. That is how Islamabad blackmails the West, fostering the same instability that makes the people back the government in search of protection. They will blame India, Afghanistan or Washington, and at the same time, they will keep asking for money.
Stateless peoples, such as the Baloch, the Pashtun, the Sindhi or the Kurds, should join forces to actively fight against oppression.
Hyrbyair Marri
Marri: Pakistan has occupied Balochistan for 70 years, and we are subjected to complete and utter poverty so that we concentrate only on survival and do not think of concepts like freedom or independence. Our land is rich, we have massive reserves of gas, oil, uranium and even more gold than South Africa. There are billions of dollars under our feet, but most of them end up in the pockets of the army and the Pakistani elite while many among our people are still cooking with dung. Adding to the plundering of our land, there are over 20,000 forcibly disappeared Baloch due to a “kill and dump” campaign that has been systematically enforced since the 1950s.
Marri: We have witnessed all sorts of attempts to import or export something called “democracy” to Africa, Latin America or the Middle East, as well as communism, socialism … but none of them worked as expected. We need a model that roots on the most basic premise of “one person, one vote,” but that also fits within our own social structure, that respects cultural and religious differences, ecology, individual and collective freedoms, human rights and the wishes of its citizens.
Marri: The power of the sirdars [tribal leaders] has to be reduced to zero. We must respect them for what they did for our people, but if they want to participate in politics, they must renounce their privileges. Otherwise we would be building a state like those Gulf monarchies, and we wouldn´t move forward.
Marri: China’s presence in Pakistan is increasingly overwhelming. I will never support anyone who backs the exploiters of my land. Stateless peoples, such as the Baloch, the Pashtun, the Sindhi or the Kurds, should join forces to actively fight against oppression. We cannot be just bystanders. On the other hand, how can the United States trust Pakistan? We all know Islamabad is behind the deaths of thousands of NATO troops in Afghanistan, they fund and train jihadis, and they even hosted Osama bin Laden near a military garrison in Abbottabad. Washington needs a reliable ally, [which] we are. Our nation might be small and even weak, but we do not want a new master — just a relationship between partners.
Marri: Trump has a clear vision of things in the international arena. His speech is clear, and he sees Pakistan as it really is: a country that always ends up betraying its allies. Trump speaks from a position of strength and in a language that Pakistan can understand. I want to think that he will bring changes to the region.
