Marc Short, the former chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, criticized how lawyers for former President Donald Trump have acted in the investigation into documents held at Mar-a-Lago.
During an interview on Fox News' "Media Buzz" on Sunday, host Howard Kurtz mentioned Short had been critical of the raid on Mar-a-Lago and asked him if media coverage of it has been fair.
Instead of commenting on the media, Short explained he thinks the Department of Justice has an "extra burden of transparency in this case" due to the FBI's "politicized" actions related to the Russia investigation and the Steele dossier.
Short, who worked under Pence from 2019 to 2021, then expressed concern over documents held at Mar-a-Lago and pivoted, unprompted, to mock Trump's legal team.
"It's certainly baffling as to why a lot of those documents were at Mar-a-Lago. It doesn't seem like it's the most secure environment," he said. "And I think there's a question about why Trump's lawyers apparently were so misleading, potentially lying, in the affidavit, saying they returned all the information."
"There's a difference between playing a lawyer on TV and actually having good legal counsel, and I think that's one of the challenges they currently face," Short added.
—Acyn (@Acyn) September 11, 2022
Trump's legal team has come under fire in the weeks since the FBI conducted a court-authorized search at his Florida residence and club on August 8. Court records have suggested the lawyers had not been forthcoming with the Department of Justice as it spent more than a year trying to retrieve the documents before conducting the raid.
In June, lawyers for Trump told the Justice Department all classified materials had been returned, the New York Times reported, but the FBI found more during the search. The Times also reported Justice Department officials said they could not trust what Trump's lawyers tell them due to the former president withholding information from them and often changing his mind.
Legal experts and former federal prosecutors have also mocked Trump's legal team.
"They appear to be either completely incompetent or out of their depth," former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti previously told Insider. "That's part of the reason why the former president has trouble finding lawyers: Because he demands that they file documents and take positions that have no legal support whatsoever."
The Times also reported on Saturday that lawyers for Trump often end up facing legal troubles of their own, with some lawyers joking that MAGA stands for "making attorneys get attorneys."

M. Evan Corcoran, a once little-known, low-profile defense lawyer, has emerged in recent months as a key figure in the ongoing Mar-a-Lago raid saga as one of Donald Trump's most recent legal hires.
Corcoran joined the embattled former president's legal team in April — Trump offered Corcoran the job without ever having met him, according to The Washington Post — and quickly entrenched himself in his client's myriad legal troubles.
But Corcoran himself has become headline fodder in the aftermath of the FBI's August 8 raid on Trump's South Florida residence, during which agents seized 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked top secret, from the former president's residence and private club.
A former federal prosecutor turned white collar criminal defense attorney, Corcoran is a partner at the Baltimore law firm Silverman, Thompson, Slutkin & White. According to his webpage on the site, Corcoran represented an insurance company in a $ 4 billion insurance coverage case stemming from the World Trade Center collapse, and defended corporate officials in the Justice Department's cartel investigations.
The lawyer apparently made a name for himself in complex business litigation and government enforcement actions before becoming ensnared in the legal woes of Trumpworld.
Corcoran joined Trump's legal team with prior experience representing bombastic figures.
Most notably, Corcoran represented Steve Bannon, former chief strategist for the Trump administration, in his contempt of Congress case. Earlier this summer, A jury in Washington, DC, found Bannon guilty of the charges against him, despite Corcoran's appeal that the case was unjustly fueled by politics.
Corcoran found himself defending Bannon after nearly taking a top role in the same US attorney's office that would later go on to prosecute the War Room host.
In early 2020, Corcoran was in line to become the second-ranking official in the federal prosecutor's office under Tim Shea, a top Trump-era Justice Department official whom then-Attorney General William Barr had appointed as the acting US attorney in Washington. Shea arrived as an outsider and turned to Corcoran, a law school friend who had served as a federal prosecutor in the office in the 1990s, for the role of first assistant US attorney, according to people familiar with the offer.
But, within months, Shea was forced out of the US attorney role amid outcry over the Justice Department leadership's interventions in the prosecutions of Roger Stone and former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn, ultimately ruining Corcoran's would-be return to the office.
Beyond his experience with Bannon, Corcoran also waded into the world of the Capitol riot, representing the longtime Capitol police officer who was indicted on charges of obstructing the DOJ's investigation into the siege, as well as defending a Pennsylvania man who pleaded guilty last year to participating in the riot.
Now Corcoran finds himself defending perhaps the most notorious legal client the country has seen in recent history.
A person familiar with Corcoran's interaction with Trump told The Post last month that the former president offered his newfound attorney the job without ever meeting him after being introduced via a conference call by another Trump advisor.
Corcoran has since found himself embroiled in Trump's most recent legal drama and could theoretically be implicated in the mess, as he and another Trump lawyer, Christina Bobb, both communicated with the DOJ during the months-long effort by government officials to retrieve boxes of classified documents from Trump's resort.
Corcoran did not respond to Insider's request for comment.

The FBI and Department of Justice discovered 76 classified documents in a Mar-a-Lago storage room during the August raid — the same room Trump's lawyer refused to let them search in June, according to court documents.
The filing, released Tuesday night, revealed additional information about the August 8 raid including the DOJ's conclusion that "efforts were likely taken" to obstruct its investigation into Trump's handling of government records.
Trump's lawyer let a DOJ attorney and FBI agents into a Mar-a-Lago storage room after turning over 38 classified documents, according to the filing.
But, Trump's lawyer "explicitly prohibited" agents from looking inside any boxes that were still in the room.
Eventually, investigators gathered enough evidence that classified documents were still in that room to apply for a search warrant.
"The government also developed evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed from the Storage Room and that efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation," the DOJ said in the court filing.
The August raid uncovered 76 classified documents in that room alone, according to the court document.
Investigators found twice the number of documents Trump's attorneys had taken "weeks" to turn over, according to the filing — which the government says "casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter."
The Department of Justice has said in court filings that it is investigating whether the former president broke three federal statutes — including the Espionage Act — by keeping classified national security documents at his Florida estate after leaving office.

Earl Gray, the attorney for Thomas Lane, one of the police officers arrested over the death of George Floyd, defended his client in a heated interview with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid on ITV Good Morning Britain. Mr Gray said that Mr Lane suggested rolling George Floyd over to Derek Chauvin, the policeman who kneeled on Mr Floyd’s neck, but that he wasn’t listened to. He said: “Thomas Lane was on his fourth day of being a police officer. Chauvin had 20 years as a police officer.” Adding: “My client said twice ‘shall we roll him over?'”
But as Piers Morgan continued to challenge the US lawyer on his client’s involvement in the George Floyd’s death, Mr Gray stormed off and ended the interview abruptly.
He told Piers Morgan: “I’m not going to answer anything to you because you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about. Do you know what I’m going to do? I’m going to go to bed.”
To which Piers replied: “Do you realise that your whole performance here merely tells the world how disgusting actually, even the people representing these police officers are?”
The defence lawyer hit back: “Thank you for the compliment. If you think I’m going to sit here and listen to you talk bad about my client, I’m not listening to that.
“If you would have told me that an hour ago when I did agree to stay up, I would have not agreed to it.”

Shortly after the explosive clash, the outspoken GMB host took to Twitter to vent his fury.
He said: “Wow. What an extraordinary & depressing interview with the lawyer for one of the #GeorgeFloyd murder police officers. Sneering, arrogant, dismissive, inhuman, shameful.”
Thousands of people took to the streets over the weekend to protest against police brutality and the death of George Floyd, across the world.
In London, Metropolitan Police said 12 people were arrested and eight officers injured during Sunday’s anti-racism demonstrations.
Most of the arrests were related to public order offences while one was for criminal damage following an incident at the Cenotaph.
It comes after Scotland Yard said 29 people were arrested and 14 officers were injured during clashes between police and protesters the day before.
Sunday’s Black Lives Matter rallies attracted thousands of people right across the UK.
In Bristol, protesters toppled the bronze memorial to slave trader Edward Colston and dumped it into the harbour.
Avon and Somerset Police said they had launched an investigation and were seeking to identify those involved with the removal of the statue.
Home Secretary Priti Patel called toppling the memorial “utterly disgraceful”.
“I think that is utterly disgraceful and that speaks to the acts of public disorder that actually have now become a distraction from the cause in which people are actually protesting about and trying to empathise and sympathise,” she said.
In a statement to the BBC, the Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said it was “important to listen to those who found the statue to represent an affront to humanity”.
Did it just get dark in this courtroom, or is Law & Order: SVU‘s Benson just throwing a ton of shade?
The exclusive clip below — from tonight’s impromptu season finale, thanks to the coronavirus shutdown — takes place during the lead-up to Sir Tobias Moore’s long-awaited trial. (Don’t remember Sir Toby? He’s the media mogul, played by American Gods‘ Ian McShane, who was outed as a sexual predator in the Season 21 premiere.)
In tonight’s episode (NBC, 10/9c), Mariska Hargitay’s Benson approaches Moore’s lawyer, Elana Barth, and wastes no time shaming her for representing such a morally reprehensible man. “What happened to you?” Olivia asks the attorney. “You were a judge. You had respect for the legal system. You had respect for justice.”
But Barth isn’t having it, arguing that everyone is entitled to a legal defense. Plus, she adds, “I have two sons. You have a son. Can you imagine a scenario: He’s at college, a girl makes a false accusation, their lives are over.” Of course, Olivia has the exact right answer to that hypothetical.
The finale finds Carisi taking the lead on Moore’s trial while his former co-workers at SVU deal as past cases suddenly come to the fore.
Press PLAY on the video above to watch Benson and Barth’s charged conversation, then hit the comments: Do you think Sir Toby will be brought to justice?

Trump lawyer turned federal informant Michael Cohen may be going to jail for a long time, if prosecutors have their way.
Prosecutors have requested that Michael Cohen receive a “substantial term of imprisonment” for tax evasion and paying hush money to a porn star on Trump’s behalf. Cohen, who pled guilty to the charges in August, has been cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s “Russiagate” probe for several months.
In a separate sentencing memo, Mueller sought no additional jail time for charges that Cohen lied to Congress regarding the proposed construction of a Trump Organization skyscraper in Moscow, instead recommending any sentence be served concurrently with that imposed in the New York case. Cohen pled guilty to those charges last week.
While the prosecution acknowledges Cohen’s willingness to assist the Mueller investigation as a mitigating factor, they point out that he did not actually sign a cooperation agreement with the special counsel and thus cannot be considered a “cooperating witness” under the law. The defense’s own sentencing memo, submitted last month, requested no jail sentence for conduct that typically warrants 51 to 63 months’ imprisonment under US sentencing guidelines.
The NY prosecutor’s sentencing memo pulls no punches, describing Cohen’s behavior as a “pattern of deception that permeated his personal life (and was evidently hidden from friends and family members who wrote on his behalf).” Cohen, prosecutors say, made millions of dollars running a consulting firm purporting to offer a direct line to President Trump, but “his promises of insight and access proved essentially hollow.”
The Mueller memo praises Cohen’s cooperation over seven “lengthy” interviews, as well as his efforts to “accept responsibility for his actions,” but stops short of recommending leniency, stating that “the sentence imposed should reflect the fact that lying to federal investigators has real consequences.”
The FBI raided Cohen’s office in April, seizing boxes of evidence including secret recordings of his conversations with Trump regarding a payoff to a former Playboy model. In July, he announced he planned to cooperate with the investigation of his former boss, and he has since distanced himself from the administration, even going so far as to change his political registration to Democrat
President Trump has called for a “full and complete” sentence for his former confidant, claiming the lawyer is lying to Mueller’s office in order to keep himself and his family out of prison. Cohen, who said just last year that he would “take a bullet for the president,” was quick to turn on his boss under pressure, claiming that Trump encouraged him to pay $ 130,000 hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels, violating campaign finance law.

In a statement on Tuesday, Avennatti said that he decided to bow out from what is expected to become a tightly-contested Democratic primary “after consultation with my family and at their request.”
The attorney once argued that only a “take no prisoners street fighter,” apparently himself, can take down Trump “in a cage match like no other in modern times.” Avenatti repeatedly spoke very highly of his chances, telling Newsweek in July that he would “absolutely” beat Trump. Judging by his Twitter feed, nothing much has changed since, he is just choosing not to.
“I do not make this decision lightly – I make it out of respect for my family. But for their concerns, I would run,” Avennatti stated, opting not to mention the legal woes he and his star client Stormy Daniels are mired in.
Last month, the court sided with President Donald Trump as it threw out a defamation lawsuit filed by Avenatti over a tweet in which Trump called the porn actress a “con job.”
Avenatti, together with his another high-profile client, Julie Swetnick, is facing a criminal investigation by the Justice Department into whether she had provided false statements while accusing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.
Apart from the legal troubles of his clients, the self-styled champion of women’s rights and, until recently, CNN darling, is embroiled in a litigation with his former law firm partner – which is also not going his way. In October, a Los Angeles Court court ordered Avenatti to pay $ 4.85 million in unpaid debts to the former colleague.
On top of that, Avenatti reportedly owns at least $ 1.2. million in unpaid taxes to IRS.
Probably the final nail in the coffin of his presidential hopes are the accusations of domestic assault filed by Estonian-born actress Mareli Miniutti. The lawyer was even briefly arrested on felony violence charges last month following the complaint. While the prosecution declined to proceed with felony charges, the investigation into a potential misdemeanor is still underway.
Before his dramatic fall from grace, Avenatti seemingly suggested that he was a perfect pick for a Democratic contender – since the Democrats should pit “a white male” against Trump if they want to have some real chances in 2020.
In his statement on Tuesday, Avenatti appears to hint that he thinks his withdrawal is the Democrats’ loss, saying he is “concerned that the Democratic Party will move toward nominating an individual who might make an exceptional President but has not chance of actually beating Donald Trump.”
While Avenatti has now officially dropped his presidential bid, he argued that he still had a good standing despite “polling at 1 percent” as pointed out by one of the commentators.
Nate – this just goes to show you really don't know what you are talking about. 1) Trump polled at 0-3% until June of 2015 (polls rt now mean nothing); 2) I have not been charged with anything; 3) I have travelled to over 20 states in 4 mos – Dems want a fighter to beat Trump.
— Michael Avenatti (@MichaelAvenatti) December 4, 2018
However, for many Avenatti’s pullout from the race has become rather a relief.
Avenatti ends 2020 run, but not before taking a shot at Democrats: They have “no real chance” against Trump.
This is why I criticized @MichaelAvenatti last week. He’s out for himself—not our country—and I knew it when he attacked Mueller’s key witness on twitter.
GOOD RIDDANCE.
— Ryan Knight 🇺🇸 (@ProudResister) December 4, 2018
Avenatti soberly telling us he's not running in 2020 as if he's letting us down and Biden pompously asserting he's obviously the best person to run the country. It's so perfect.

Guzman was made a ‘scapegoat’ by a corrupt Mexican government in an American drug war, so that the true head of the drug empire, Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, can escape justice, defense attorney for the narcotics baron claimed in his opening statement in Federal District Court in Brooklyn.
“[Zambada] has been allowed to operate for the last 55 years because he pays for it,” Jeffrey Lichtman told the court in an unexpected start of the hearing. “He bribes the current president of Mexico and for good measure, the previous one as well.”
Seventy-year-old Zambada has long been known to be one of Guzman’s closest deputies. Despite being one of the top men in the Cartel he has never been arrested for his criminal activities. “El Mayo” is still at large in Mexico. Zambada’s son, Vicente Zambada-Niebla, and his brother, Jesus Reynaldo Zambada García, however, are in US custody and may testify in the trial.
“The US government pretends to want him. But somehow they can’t figure out where he is,” Lichtman said Tuesday, noting that there is an “uglier side” to the story which the governments of Mexico and the United States don’t want the public to hear.

In a surprising twist of events, Lichtman asked the jurors to remain open to the possibility that US government officials are not all innocent too, noting “that American law enforcement can also be crooked.”
They work together when it suits them, Mayo [Zambada] and the United States government.
The remarks came after Assistant US Attorney Adam Fels laid out the US government’s case against the drug lord. Accusing El Chapo of generating an empire that moved billions of dollars of narcotics to the US, Fels told the jury that Guzman is the sole leader of the Sinaloa cartel.
“Money, drugs, murder and a vast global narcotics trafficking organization – that is what this case is about, and that is what the evidence in this case will prove,” the prosecutor said.
While Guzman’s defense team presents the charges leveled against their client as an international conspiracy, Mexico’s current president Enrique Peña Nieto and his predecessor Felipe Calderón immediately rejected the allegations of corruption levelled against them.
Guzman currently faces 17 criminal counts related to his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel. He may very well spend the rest of his days in a US maximum security prison if convicted. The 61-year-old drug lord, who managed to escape maximum security prisons on two occasions, is kept in under close watch in solitary confinement in New York, after being extradited to the United States from Mexico in January 2017. His trial is expected to last several months.
