WASHINGTON (AP) — Julie Swetnick, one of the women who has publicly accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, has an extensive history of involvement in legal disputes, including a lawsuit in which an ex-employer accused her of falsifying her college and work history on her job application.

Legal documents from Maryland, Oregon and Florida provide a partial picture of a woman who stepped into the media glare amid the battle over Kavanaugh’s nomination for the nation’s highest court.

Back when MoviePass first announced its $ 10-a-month subscription for one movie a day, AMC said the scheme was like “turning lead into gold.” Since no alchemist stepped forward to do that for MoviePass, the movie ticketing service’s parent company, Helios and Matheson Analytics, has posted a massive operating loss that reached $ 126.6 million (overall net loss of $ 84 million) for the quarter ending on June 30th. That’s a humongous jump from the $ 2.7 million loss it posted for the same quarter last year, prompting shareholders to file a lawsuit against Helios and Matheson.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs said the promises the service made “are materially false and/or misleading” and that “there was no reasonable basis to even imply that the MoviePass business model could lead to profitability.” Such a massive loss probably comes as no surprise to people following news about the service, given that it has been bleeding cash these past months. It implemented surge pricing, tried to sell debt and equity and eventually slashed its plan to three movies per month instead of one a day, all in an effort to fight for survival. People also found that the company has been resurrecting their terminated accounts without their consent.

How long the company will last after a devastating loss remains to be seen. It’s burning through cash at a rapid pace, spending $ 219.2 million within a six-month period that ended on June 30th. Seeing as its parent company only has $ 15.5 million in cash and $ 53.5 million in total current assets left, MoviePass will have to work quickly to find a solution if it wants to live past the next few months.

Makers of the blockbuster drug Abilify have until September 1 to come up with a way to settle more than 800 lawsuits that claim the anti-psychotic and anti-depressive drug spurred uncontrollable urges to gamble, binge eat, shop, and have sex—all without any warning.

The deadline for that “global settlement” was ordered recently by Judge M. Casey Rodgers in the Northern District Court of Florida, which is handling all the lawsuits in a lumped process called multidistrict litigation (MDL).

Judge Rodgers made the call after Abilify’s makers, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka, settled three lawsuits from the MDL individually earlier this year. All three were settled for undisclosed sums. Those cases had been carefully selected by the court and used as so-called bellwether trials. That is, they were test cases for the rest, thus they set a precedent for settlement. In the event that Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka fail to come up with a way to settle the rest by the deadline, the court will move a fresh batch of lawsuits from the MDL to trial.

Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica troubles are far from over and a new class action lawsuit over the scandal might be on the way. Wired reports today that a group of UK residents has sent the company a letter before claim, in which they highlight the many instances where the social media giant failed to protect its users’ privacy and demand answers to a list of questions. Represented by UK-based law firm Irvine Thanvi Natas Solicitors, the UK residents all had their data obtained by Cambridge Analytica, and their attorney says that if their questions aren’t answered within 14 days, legal action could be taken.

The 27-page letter, which Wired was able to review, claims that Facebook violated the UK’s Data Protection Act, which could entitle the dozens of claimants to compensation. The claimants want more thorough answers to questions about who had access to their data as well as what was done with it, and if they don’t get adequate responses, they might have a right to collect damages, says the group’s lawyer, Ravi Naik. “People should realize that data rights are real rights, and we have a mechanism to enforce them,” Naik told Wired.

The letter before claim is the first step in the process of filing a class action lawsuit, and if it goes forward, around 1.1 million UK citizens could be eligible to sign on. On Monday, a group called Fair Vote UK announced its own class action lawsuit against Facebook. The group said it would take the first steps towards litigation this week “for breaches on a vast scale of the agreement between the company and its users.” Earlier this month, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office fined Facebook a preliminary amount of £500,000 (over $ 656,000) for its lack of adequate privacy protections regarding the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Meanwhile, the company continues to face lawsuits and investigations in the US. A number of suits were filed against Facebook shortly after the Cambridge Analytica debacle came to light and the FBI, SEC, FTC and Department of Justice are looking into both Facebook and the now defunct Cambridge Analytica.

The United States is known for being the most litigious country on Earth, and home to 80 percent of the world’s lawyers. Some of the most bizarre and frivolous lawsuits in the world have taken place in the US.

Today, there are over 1.3 million lawyers across the nation who generate millions of lawsuits every year. With that many lawyers and a growing number of folks looking to make a quick buck, is it any wonder the US has become a suing society?

Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger foresaw the onslaught of money-grabbing hysteria back in 1970s, when he warned that the US was becoming “a society overrun by hordes of lawyers, hungry as locusts”.

Now, every year millions of ridiculous cases are brought against people and or companies for obscene amounts of money, and here are some of the most bizarre in the bunch:

Cheese injustice

Just last week two Floridian McDonald’s customers filed a suit against the fast food chain for charging the same price for a Quarter Pounder with cheese as the one without. The pair are looking for a $ 5 million payout because they say they’re being unfairly charged for cheese they don’t want.

“McDonald’s is being unjustly enriched by these practices because it receives payment for cheese it does not deliver to its customers,” according to lawsuit.

Barking mad

In 2015 a Seattle pet owner was ordered to pay $ 500,000 after their neighbor sued them for the noise made by their barking dog. Woodrow Thompson claimed the pet, named Cawper, caused “profound emotional distress” with his “super” bark of 128 decibels through double pane windows. This would make it louder than the sound of thunder and almost as loud as a military jet taking off.

Thompson was given a default judgement because the plaintiff, Denise Norton, assumed the suit was a joke and didn’t show up to court. She has since filed an appeal.

Feeling hot, hot, hot

In 1992 Stella Liebeck was awarded more than $ 2.7 million in her case against McDonald’s after she received third-degree burns from a coffee she placed in her lap. The grandmother was a passenger at a McDonald’s drive-through when she placed the Styrofoam cup between her legs and removed the lid to add cream and sugar, accidentally tipping the burning hot contents.

Liebeck initially attempted to settle the suit for $ 20,000 but when McDonald’s rejected the offer, more than 700 claims over burns from their coffee were uncovered. Eventually Liebeck’s punitive damages were reduced to $ 480,000, in addition to $ 160,000 in compensatory damages.

Stolen sperm

In 1998, New Mexico resident Peter Wallis filed a lawsuit against his former girlfriend Kellie Smith for impregnating herself without his consent. Wallis argued that his girlfriend came off birth control without his knowledge for the purpose of “intentionally acquiring and misusing his sperm.”

Smith won the case after her lawyers argued that the sperm was voluntarily given and should be legally classed as a gift, leaving Wallis with no possession rights.

Pimpin’ ain’t easy

In 2013 a convicted pimp serving time for stomping on the face of a customer who needed stitches and plastic surgery, sued Nike for $ 100 million because they didn’t warn him that his Air Jordan sneakers could be used as a dangerous weapon.

A judge threw out the case following a 23-minute trial, in which one of Nike’s three attending attorney’s argued that the shoes aren’t dangerous when used correctly.

The ‘pants lawsuit’

Of course a list of the frivolous lawsuits cannot be complete without mentioning Roy L. Pearson Jr. The administrative law judge sued a dry cleaners in 2007 for $ 67 million dollars because they misplaced a pair of his pants.

Pearson cited inconvenience, mental anguish and attorney fees (he represented himself) as reason for the astronomical figure – which he later reduced to a more reasonable $ 54 million. He did not win the case, or several appeals thereafter.

In the wake of the ongoing Cambridge Analytica debacle, Facebook has now been sued in federal court in San Francisco and San Jose. These new cases claim violations of federal securities laws, unfair competition, and negligence, among other allegations.

The pair of cases stem from recent revelations that Cambridge Analytica, a British data firm that contracted with the Donald Trump presidential campaign, retained private data from 50 million Facebook users despite claiming to have deleted it. New reporting on Cambridge Analytica has spurred massive public outcry from users and politicians with CEO Mark Zuckerberg calling it a “breach of trust.”

These two cases, which were filed on March 20, could be just the first among what could be a coming wave of similar lawsuits.

In its annual SEC filing, Intel has revealed that it’s facing 32 lawsuits over the Spectre and Meltdown attacks on its processors. While the Spectre problem is a near-universal issue faced by modern processors, the Meltdown attack is specific to processors from Intel and Apple, along with certain ARM designs that are coming to market shortly.

Per Intel’s filing, 30 of the cases are customer class-action suits from users claiming to be harmed by the flaws. While Meltdown has effective workarounds, they come with some performance cost. Workarounds for Spectre are more difficult and similarly can harm system performance.

The other two cases are securities class actions that claim that Intel made misleading public statements during the six-month period after the company was notified of the problems but before the attacks were made public.
