A Republican lawmaker likened the Trump administration’s discontinued child-separation policy at the US-Mexico border to the fate of President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who faces increased scrutiny after allegedly breaching his plea agreement to charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice.
“I’m always glad to fill in the gaps of people’s knowledge or ignorance in a particular area,” Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas said during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration and border security. “So let me just state for those who are not aware … parents are separated from children every single day of every year, year after year.”See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Marshall Space Flight Center has a long and storied history when it comes to rocket design and production. It was there that Wernher von Braun and his German compatriots helped NASA design the Saturn line of rockets that took humans into deep space and land on the Moon. There, too, key components of the space shuttle’s rockets were designed.
Now, however, US rockets and engines are much more commonly developed outside of northern Alabama, where the NASA center is located in Huntsville. SpaceX has designed and built its Merlin rocket engines in California, and it is doing the same thing with its more powerful Raptor engines. Blue Origin has designed four engines in the state of Washington. Both companies have tested their rocket engines in Texas.
Smaller firms, too, such as Virgin Orbit, Vector, Rocket Lab, Relativity Space, Firefly, and a host of other firms have developed innovative new rocket engines and boosters outside the walls of the Marshall Space Flight Center. Certainly, these companies have at time drawn on the NASA center for its expertise, but these efforts have largely been privately financed and independently led.
]]>The Right to Repair Act is heading to the biggest tech corporations’ home state. Lawmaker Susan Talamantes Eggman is introducing the bill in California, which is now 18th state in the country to look into making devices easier to repair. These days, you can either bring your broken phone, tablet or computer to their manufacturers’/retailers’ repair facilities and wait a long time for them to be fixed or to an unauthorized kiosk that can fix your devices more quickly but don’t have (legal) access to official parts.
The Act would require tech titans to release repair guides and make official repair parts available to consumers and third-party repair professionals. It would also put diagnostic info and tools into your hands or to the hands of independents repair shops. Doing so has quite a few benefits, including the reduction of e-waste. By giving people more repair options to choose from, after all, they’re all less inclined to just throw out a broken device and buy a new model when the old one can still be salvaged. Also, it encourages people to be more adventurous when it comes fixing their own devices, which could give rise to new innovators and inventors.
Kit Walsh, Senior Staff Attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said in a statement:
“The bill is critical to protect independent repair shops and a competitive market for repair, which means better service and lower prices. It also helps preserve the right of individual device owners to understand and fix their own property. We should encourage people to take things apart and learn from them. After all, that’s how many of today’s most successful innovators got started.”
When Right to Repair was introduced in Nebraska, Apple told lawmakers that it would turn the state into a “mecca for hackers.” Suffice it to say, tech titans won’t be happy now that the Act has reached their backyard.

]]>“I was wrong, I regret my comments and I sincerely apologize to anyone whom I have hurt,” Alford said Monday, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.
The firestorm that led to the retraction was ignited by Alford’s remarks at a town hall meeting in Garden City on Saturday.
While commenting against marijuana use, Alford had cited the historic record for why so many drugs, including cannabis, were outlawed in the US in the ‘30’s. Bizarrely, he acknowledged the racist roots of drug prohibition that many advocates of legalization have brought to light in recent years. However, his logic flowed in the opposite direction. Instead of seeing drug prohibition as a means to achieving racist ends, Alford took away that the minority races, blacks in particular, had been reacting to the drugs in a worse way than whites.
“One of the reasons why, I hate to say it, was that the African-Americans, they were basically users and they basically responded the worst off to those drugs just because of their character makeup, their genetics and that,” Alford said.
Many of Alford’s colleagues in the legislature were “taken aback” at the lawmaker’s remarks and promised to review the event, the Topeka-Journal reported.
“I think that is outrageous,” Democratic State Senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau said, the Topeka-Journal reported. “For a sitting state representative to say that, I just can’t believe it. You can’t put everybody into one category. He should be more of a statesman and get facts.”
Former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer, who is seeking nomination for governor in the Democratic Party, said in a statement that the type of ignorance shown in Alford’s statements has existed in Topeka for too long.
“It is hard to believe that in 2018, anyone would support the discredited and racist policies of the Jim Crow era,” Brewer said, the Topka-Journal reported. “No matter one’s feelings on medical marijuana and marijuana legalization, we can all agree that views like those of Kansas Rep. Alford have no place in our Statehouse, in our state, or in our country.”
Alford could face discipline for his comments from the House Republican leadership, but the state’s Speaker of the House Republican Ron Ryckman, said it was too early to tell what punishment might be appropriate for Alford.
Alford is the chair of the state’s Child Welfare System Task Force and the House Committee on Children and Seniors. Ryckman could strip the lawmaker of those titles if he chooses to do so. Ryckman stated that he and House Majority Leader Don Hineman, also a Republican, would review the issue and relevant policies with staff, according to the Topeka-Journal.
READ MORE: Dems to Sessions: ‘You can pry legal pot from our warm, interesting to look at hands’
Alford’s controversial anti-marijuana comments come on the heels of US Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the US Justice Department’s decision to rescind the 2013 Cole memo, a rule set in motion by former President Obama’s administration, which enacted a relatively passive policy of federal enforcement of cannabis laws in states that voted to make the drug legal for recreational use.
Harsh reactions came from local and state government officials in California and other states, who say they are surprised, concerned and disappointed by the attorney general’s decision, which could open the door to the federal government intervening in states that legally sell marijuana to adults for recreational purposes.
Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom (D-California) took to Twitter after the decision and pointed out that Sessions’ move to rescind the order would have a negative impact both economically and socially.

California recently became the eighth state, along with the District of Columbia, to approve the recreational sales of marijuana after voters in the states and district approved the measure in 2016.

An erroneous tweet from The Hill sparked a feud between White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California on Monday, in which the two officials accused the other of lying and spending too much time on Twitter.
In a now-removed tweet linking to a story on the Republican Party’s tax reform efforts, The Hill tweeted: “Huckabee Sanders: GOP ‘begged’ Dems to work on tax reform.”
In the article, Sanders is quoted in an interview on “Fox and Friends” saying President Donald Trump “would’ve been happy” to work with Democrats to pass the Republican Party’s tax code reform that has since passed in the House.
“That’s something that Democrats shouldn’t need to be begged to be a part of,” Sanders reportedly said. “They should’ve been begging and banging down the door of the building behind me to be part of this process and to be part of helping more Americans be more successful.”
The Hill has since published a new tweet with the corrected title: “Huckabee Sanders: Dems should have been ‘begging’ to participate in tax reform.”
Lieu shared The Hill’s erroneous tweet before its removal, adding: “Dear @PressSec: You don’t serve in Congress. I do. And I can say with absolute certainty that you are lying.”
Nearly an hour later, Lieu replied to a MarketWatch columnist who suggested that “everybody knows she’s lying”: “That is a fair point,” Lieu said.
Around two hours later, Sanders quoted Lieu’s first tweet and fired back.
“Dear @tedlieu – I don’t serve in Congress, but I can read,” Sanders said on Twitter. “If you had read the story, not an incorrect tweet, you would see that what I said was Dems should be begging to help Americans keep more of their money.”
“You should spend less time tweeting, more time doing your job,” Sanders continued.
Lieu later admitted to his flawed tweet and deleted it, but included a partisan quip in another statement: “Dear @PressSec: If the Hill tweet was incorrect, then my tweet based on it would also be incorrect,” Lieu tweeted.
“Unlike the Trump Administration, I am confident enough to admit errors,” Lieu continued. “Also, I dare you to give the same tweeting advice you gave me to your boss.”
Lieu has been vocal about his opposition toward various Trump administration officials and policies on Twitter, most recently lambasting Republican efforts to reform the US tax code, and accusing the party of hindering special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible ties with the Trump campaign.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky lawmaker’s resume included enough material for an award-winning memoir: He was a peacekeeper at the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, a White House chaplain to three presidents and a 9/11 first responder who gave last rites to hundreds of people at Ground Zero.
But Republican Dan Johnson’s carefully crafted history crumbled this week following an extensively reported story from the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting. The story tore down his claims and portrayed him as a con man whose deceptions propped up his ministry of a church of outcasts in Louisville and hid a sinister secret: a sexual assault allegation from a 17-year-old girl.
Johnson denied it all, declaring his innocence from the pulpit of the church where he was the self-appointed “pope.” By Wednesday night, he was dead, his body found on the side of a secluded road with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The death of the 57-year-old jolted Republican leaders, who were already struggling with a sexual harassment scandal that toppled the state’s first GOP House speaker in nearly 100 years plus three other Republican committee chairmen. Most in the party had already turned their back on Johnson, calling for his resignation following the sexual assault allegation and his history of posting racist photos on Facebook that depicted President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama as monkeys.
By Thursday, many were offering messages of sympathy while acknowledging Johnson’s complex life.
“He was passionate about others, I saw it often yet he needed help himself,” GOP state Rep. Jim DuPlessis, who sat beside Johnson on the House floor, posted on Twitter.
Johnson’s wife, Rebecca Johnson, said her husband was the victim of a “high-tech lynching” and announced she would run to replace him in the Legislature.
Elected in 2016, he was part of a wave of Republican victories that gave the GOP a majority in the Kentucky House for the first time in nearly 100 years. But before that, he was the pastor of Heart of Fire Church in Louisville, which prided itself on welcoming “real people.”
“It was a biker church, so there was lots of leather jackets, lots of long hair and people that if you ran into them on the street, you might have a different first impression,” said David Adams, a political operative who worked with Johnson on his campaign.
On the church’s website, Johnson claimed to have healed sick people during a visit to South America in 1991, including the incredible story of raising a woman from the dead. The miracles were detailed in a letter from David Fischer, pastor of a church in California. Fischer told the investigative reporting center that he did not witness those events and could not point the agency to anyone who had.
On his financial disclosure forms, Johnson listed his only source of income as workers compensation from the state of New York. He said that money was from injuries he sustained while working as a chaplain immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City. But the reporting center, after a seven-month effort, could find no evidence that Johnson was in New York that day.
In a Facebook message posted hours before his death, Johnson hinted that he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder relating to what he witnessed in New York, details that he shared with friends through the years, including Republican state Sen. Dan Seum.
“He struggled with that. I know he did. The fact it was so horrific that he was involved in praying over these people,” Seum said. “I believed him. I had no reason not to.”
The sexual assault allegation came from Maranda Richmond, a former member of Johnson’s church. Richmond told the reporting center she was spending the night at Johnson’s house on New Year’s Eve 2012 when she awoke several hours after midnight to find Johnson standing over her. She said he stuck his tongue in her mouth and put his hands down her pants and into her vagina. She said she begged him to stop and eventually he did.
The Associated Press does not generally identify victims who report sexual assault but is doing so because Richmond has gone public with her story.
Richmond’s public comments match what she told police two years ago, according to police documents obtained by the reporting center. In 2013, police investigated the matter, including a secretly recorded phone call between Johnson and Richmond’s father. But a detective later closed the case, saying Richmond refused to cooperate. Richmond denied that.
As a result of the center’s reporting, the Louisville Metro Police Department re-opened its investigation.
Johnson held a news conference Tuesday at his church, denying the allegations with his wife by his side. He said he would not resign, calling the accusations part of a strategy to attack conservative Republicans nationwide. He saved his criticism for the media, saying he did not “want to blast this girl. I have compassion for her. I’m very sorrowful she is in this dark place in her life.”
The reporting center interviewed people who were at the Rodney King riots and spoke with an expert on religious faith and the presidency. All of them said Johnson’s claims were false.
He insisted it was all true.
“This whole piece was so outrageous. It was as though I had never lived or never done anything I had ever done,” he told reporters.
At the end of the news conference, a reporter asked if he had ever raised anyone from the dead. Johnson stopped, turned to face the journalist and said, “God has,” before walking out of the pulpit for the final time.
