PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. — From Portage la Prairie to Pyeongchang.

About 90 kilometres down the highway from where Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris were born in Winnipeg, the two realized their Olympic dreams for a second time on Sunday.

And perhaps they were always supposed to be playing on a team together. After all, Morris and Lawes were both born on December 16, Morris in 1978 and Lawes 10 years later in 1988.

Morris and Lawes defeated Brad Gushue and Val Sweeting 8-6 in the first-ever mixed doubles Olympic trials final.

“I feel like I’m a little more in shock this time,” Lawes said after the win. “We were always Olympians and now we’re two-time Olympians.”

Lawes won gold as a third on Jennifer Jones’ team in 2014, and now becomes the first-ever two-time female Olympian curler for Canada. 

Morris won Olympic gold in 2010 as a third for Kevin Martin’s team. 

“I was so lucky to go to Vancouver for the Olympics and now this. It’s going to be so cool and I feel so honoured.”

While Morris was born in Winnipeg, he only spent the first couple of years of his life there before moving to Ottawa. 

The two had family in friends in the crowd cheering on their every shot and when it was all over, there was Lawes’ mom, Cheryl, ready to hand over a Canadian flag for her and Morris to drape themselves in.

“It’s a dream to be able to play in front of our friends and family,” Lawes said. “I’m so lucky that I had my mom and boyfriend’s family and friends come out and watch. That support is something I’ll never forget.”

Saving their best for last

There was a point in the week when it looked like Lawes and Morris would miss the playoffs. They had a 2-3 record after five games and were struggling with communication at times. But the two fierce competitors came together when they needed it most to complete their magical run.

“We kept having the faith,” Morris said. “I just got really lucky that Kaitlyn was available. I knew we would make a great combo. We’ve been good friends and she’s a heck of a shot-maker.”

This was only the second time Lawes and Morris had played mixed doubles together. Morris normally plays with Rachel Homan, but when her team won the trials last month, he was left scrambling to find a partner with just weeks to spare.

“Kaitlyn was my first choice,” he said.

The two practised together only once before these pressure-packed trials — for about a half hour at the Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg.

“The goal was to try and get back there one way or the other,” Lawes said. “Right now this is an absolute dream come true.”

Sting of defeat

While it’ll be the second time for both Lawes and Morris heading to the Olympics, it’s also doubly stinging for Gushue and Sweeting.

Both of their teams had their Olympic dreams dashed last month in Ottawa at the trials.

And then this.

“It sucks right now for sure,” Gushue said. “Val played so well. And I just kept putting her in pressure situations.”

After the loss Gushue was critical of his play, specifically pointing to what he calls a “strategic error” in the fourth end leading to four massive points for Lawes and Morris and the turning point of the game.

“It wasn’t my best today,” he said.

Gushue has already won Olympic gold — but Sweeting hasn’t even made it to the Games. The pain of defeat was visibly evident as the Alberta skip fought back tears after the game.

“We didn’t give up and it just wasn’t our day out there. I’m proud of us,” she said.

Gushue so badly wanted to play a key role in getting Sweeting that Olympic opportunity.

“That’s what I’m most disappointed about. She’s deserving of putting a maple leaf on her back and I think my play today caused her not to have that.”

Great expectations

Both Lawes and Morris say all they want to do right now is get some physiotherapy and rest. This mixed doubles game is mentally and physically exhausting. 

“I’ve never swept so much in my life,” Morris said. “I can’t wait to get some physio done on my shoulder.”

But they won’t be able to rest for long. Curling Canada has mapped out what every day looks like for them from now until the Olympics. Despite the aches and pains, the thrill of victory diminishes any soreness the two might be feeling.

“It’s an honour any time you get to wear the maple leaf at the Olympic Games,” Lawes said. “It’s so rare so to do a second time.”

Canada has medaled at each Olympics since curling was reintroduced in 1998.

This is the first time mixed doubles is being featured at the Olympics. Canada has never won gold at a mixed doubles world championship, and so now the weight of those lofty expectations intensifies.

“We’re Canadian and we’re curlers so we’re expected to bring home the gold,” Morris said.

Beginning one month from now, we’ll find out if they can come through.

Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris will represent Canada when mixed doubles curling makes its Olympic debut at the Pyeongchang Games after an 8-6 victory over Val Sweeting and Brad Gushue in Sunday’s trials final from Portage la Prairie, Man.

Lawes/Morris took the lead by scoring four points in the fourth end and added a steal of two in the fifth to make it 7-3. Sweeting/Gushue fought back with a pair of their own in the sixth end and made it a one-point game with a steal in the seventh.

In the eighth and final end, Sweeting chipped off and rolled out with her final throw to give Lawes/Morris a point and the victory.

Lawes/Morris had hammer but didn’t need to throw their final stone after the Sweeting miss.

Both Lawes and Morris have Olympic experience.

Lawes, from Winnipeg, won gold in 2014 as the third for Jennifer Jones. Morris, a resident of Canmore, Alta., stood on the podium in 2010 as the third for Kevin Martin’s gold-medal foursome.

No Canadian curler has ever won two gold medals at the Olympics, so Morris and Lawes will look to make the history books in Pyeongchang.

Gushue, from St. John’s, won gold at the 2006 Olympics. Sweeting, from Edmonton, has never competed at a Winter Games.

On Sunday, the teams exchanged singles in the first two ends. Sweeting tapped back for two in the third for a 3-1 lead.

Lawes and Morris followed with a big response. After a Morris bump put three rocks in the four-foot, Lawes used the hammer for a hit and roll that changed the complexion of the game.

The four-player curling team trials were held last month in Ottawa. Calgary’s Kevin Koe won the men’s competition and Ottawa’s Rachel Homan took the women’s title.

Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris led from start to finish as they beat Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman 7-3 to advance to the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials final.

Lawes and Morris will meet Brad Gushue and Val Sweeting with a spot at February’s Olympics in Pyeongchang on the line.

“It would be a dream come true,” Lawes said. “We’re focused on trying to make our shots and hopefully we have that hammer coming home in the last end. I think it’s going to be a great game tomorrow.”

“We’re not looking anything past Brad and Val tomorrow. They’re formidable opponents and we’re just going to do what we can to prepare for tomorrow,” said Morris.

The duo scored a double in the first end of Saturday night’s match and never looked back, opening up a 6-2 lead by the fifth end.

Tomorrow’s final will be a rematch of a match earlier Saturday, won by Gushue and Sweeting with ease.

Gushue, Sweeting reach final

Brad Gushue and Val Sweeting continued their strong play at the Canadian mixed doubles curling trials on Saturday, defeating Morris and Lawes in the Page 1-2 playoff for a spot in the finals.

Gushue and Sweeting used a 4-point end in the fifth to take full control, before winning 9-4 in seven ends.

Peterman, Gallant move on to semis

Peterman and Gallant avoided a major meltdown on Saturday, pulling out a victory over Jennifer Jones and Mark Nichols in the Page 3-4 playoff. 

Peterman and Gallant opened up a 4-0 lead through three ends in Portage la Prairie, Man., before a few costly mistakes allowed the veteran team of Jones and Nichols to tie the match 4-4 heading into the eighth and final end. 

With a crowded house heading into the final rock, Peterman placed it perfectly with a tap to give her team a 5-4 win, advancing to the semifinal.

“I don’t really get nerves like that playing second,” said Peterman, of her final shot for the win. “It wasn’t too bad. I kind of joked that I had been throwing that weight all game on my last shot so it was nice.”

Peterman and Gallant reached the 3-4 game earlier in the day with an 8-5 victory over Jill Officer and Reid Carruthers. Jones andNichols beat Chelsea Carey and Colin Hodgson 8-7 in an extra end in the other morning elimination game at Stride Place.

Jones and Nichols — who have both won Olympic gold for Canada in four-player events — were eliminated with the loss.

“Obviously we’re hugely disappointed,” Jones said. “We came here to win, but I’m proud of how we played. Mark is a great teammate and I had a lot of fun.”

The winners of the entire event will be crowned on Sunday, and will represent Canada at the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February.

Every draw of the trials will be live streamed on CBCSports.ca and the CBC Sports app. In addition, coverage of the final two days of the event, including the playoffs and final, will be available on CBC TV as part of the Road to the Olympic Games broadcast Saturday and Sunday.

The Super Rugby champions scored 14 points to draw the match with Henderson in the sin-bin late on, but Gatland was willing to forgive him after a barnstorming performance from the Irishman.

“Primarily, those two guys had really strong games to give us some real food for thought,” said Gatland.

“Courtney played really well. He was strong in the lineout, carried and defended particularly well.

“Iain is probably disappointed with himself – that yellow card was crucial – but he carried extremely well and that was a big positive.

“Second row is a position we knew right from the start that we had a lot of strength in. There’s a toss-up in terms of selection. We’ll meet tomorrow night and select the side and tell the players on Thursday.”

With Maro Itoje set to be promoted into the starting line-up, there could be a complete clearout in the second row from Eden Park unless Gatland decides to deploy Lawes in the back row.

Either way Lawes, who was withdrawn after 54 minutes presumably to preserve him for the weekend, feels ready.

“I went out and did everything I could. It’s not up to me any more. I played fairly well and I’m looking forward to it if I get a run-out at the weekend,” said Lawes.

“I am feeling confident if I do get called up. I’ll lay it on the line like I always do.”

Henderson was a surprise selection for the tour but made a big impression in the Westpac Stadium – the venue for Saturday’s Test.

“Our heads will definitely be in the right place this weekend, whoever the starting team is and whoever’s on the bench,” he said.

“I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to trying to rattle a few New Zealand boys and bringing a new level of physicality that hasn’t yet been seen.”

George North scored a first-half try filling in as an emergency centre when Robbie Henshaw sustained a shoulder injury which is likely to end his tour. However the Wales wing does not look to have done enough to force his way in.

“It’s probably not been the ideal situation for him not to have 80 minutes on the wing,” said Gatland.
