It’s unlikely that anyone would deliberately push towards a Russia-US nuclear war, since such conflict can’t be won, Russia’s foreign minister said, adding that any mistake amid ongoing tensions could become “fatal.”

“I believe that everyone in the world realizes that an armed conflict between two leading nuclear powers, Russia and the United States, would have disastrous consequences for humankind,” Sergey Lavrov told Rossiya Segodnya in an interview, published on Monday.

There is no doubt that no one can win a nuclear war, and that such a war should never be unleashed.

Washington and its allies, however, are too “fixated on their own geopolitical ambitions,” the minister explained, and they are not ready to “adapt” to the changing situation on the global scene. The desire to maintain dominance pushes them towards seeking – and sowing – more and more conflicts.

“This explains their striving to hamper these processes, no matter what, and their increased aggression in foreign affairs. Confrontation is being incited, and channels for dialogue are being frozen,” Lavrov said.

Such conflict seeking can easily lead to a global disaster, which can unfold, if not on purpose, merely by accident. “A situation could arise where the price of a mistake or misunderstanding could prove fatal,” he warned.

Despite their different positions, Russia and Western states jointly bear tremendous responsibility for the future of the entire human race and for finding effective responses to the numerous challenges and threats of our time.

Russia, on its part sticks to a strictly defensive behavior, and is set to continue bolstering its defensive capabilities. The ongoing tensions would just “fade away” if the West would stick to the international law of the UN Charter, Lavrov stressed.

However, while the restrictions policy does not harm the US, the EU suffers billions in losses.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, Lavrov lamented the dismal state of EU-Russia relations, describing them as far from normal. The divisions are being fueled from across the pond, he said.

“The mythical ‘Russian threat’ is forced upon the Europeans, primarily, from the outside,” Lavrov said. The main bone of contention between the EU and Russia –sanctions– were imposed by the European nations “on direct orders” from Washington.

With that said, the US has hardly felt any adverse effect from the policy it championed, unlike the EU.

“Estimates of losses incurred by the EU states from the sanctions vary. According to some estimates, they might amount to over €100 billion. It’s important that European politicians understand this,” the minister said.

Russia, which had to retaliate with tit-for-tat measures, is ready to lift the restrictions it imposed on European goods back in 2014.

“We have spoken repeatedly about our readiness to abolish countermeasures,” Lavrov said. However, the EU must make the first step.

“We hope that common sense will eventually prevail since, objectively speaking, the sanctions neither benefit Russia nor the EU,” the diplomat added.

The EU imposed an array of economic sanctions on Russia after its reunification with Crimea, which followed a coup in Kiev and the subsequent civil war in eastern Ukraine. The sanctions target Russia’s military and banking industry, as well as senior government officials and high-profile businessmen and politicians. The EU has repeatedly extended the sanctions. In July, the EU Council prolonged the measures targeting the Russian economy until February 2019 and, in September, it extended unitl march restrictive measures against 155 persons and 44 entities.

Meanwhile, more and more prominent voices have been speaking out in favor of lifting the restrictions. Last week, former French President Nicholas Sarkozy told media that the sanctions were “counterproductive” and only serve to alienate Moscow and drive it closer to China.

War in Syria won’t end while the US remains there – Lavrov to French media https://briefnews.eu/war-in-syria-wont-end-while-the-us-remains-there-lavrov-to-french-media/ https://briefnews.eu/war-in-syria-wont-end-while-the-us-remains-there-lavrov-to-french-media/#respond Fri, 12 Oct 2018 17:37:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/war-in-syria-wont-end-while-the-us-remains-there-lavrov-to-french-media/ The illegal US presence in Syria is one of the reasons why war there cannot end, especially since Washington is apparently trying to create a quasi-state on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, the Russian foreign minister said.

The pessimistic prediction about the future of Syria came from Sergey Lavrov in an interview he gave to RT France, le Figaro and Paris Match. Asked about a planned disarmament of jihadist forces in Idlib governorate by Turkey and whether it would be an end to the war, which has lasted for over seven years, the Russian officials said solving the Idlib debacle would by no means end the crisis.

“This story will only end when the Syrian people are back in control of Syria and when everyone involved, especially those who came there uninvited, leave,” Lavrov said. He added Idlib is not the last problematic place in Syria.

“There are large territories east of Euprates [river] where absolutely unacceptable things happen. The United States is trying to create a quasi-state there with the help of their allies, mostly Kurds,” he said.

Lavrov said Washington helps creating administrative bodies in areas under its control, provides aid and even considers them good enough to encourage refugees to go back there. This is in sharp contrast to how it treats areas controlled by Damascus, he said.

“I cannot exclude that the US are trying to keep the situation heated up in the region to ensure that everyone is on the edge. It’s easier for them to catch fish in the water they muddy. Such policies never ended well,” Lavrov warned.

The minister also dismissed accusations that Russia engages in all sorts of bad activities, including cyberattacks, meddling in elections and other things. He said the way such accusations are published through the media imply that the accusers are not interested in resolving whatever concerns they have about Russia.

“If our Western colleagues actually expect to put us out of balance with this hysterics, they have not been reading the right history books. If this is all just fuss, this fit of political rabbis will pass naturally. Once they have vented off everything they need to, we will be waiting for them for a serious professional discussion within a legal field, not a propagandistic chat,” he said.

Lavrov also criticized US officials for encouraging the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople to push for a church schism in Ukraine, saying it was not normal for secular authorities to get involved in church affairs.

‘Secret directive’ bans UN agencies from helping rebuild Syria until ‘political transition’ – Lavrov https://briefnews.eu/secret-directive-bans-un-agencies-from-helping-rebuild-syria-until-political-transition-lavrov/ https://briefnews.eu/secret-directive-bans-un-agencies-from-helping-rebuild-syria-until-political-transition-lavrov/#respond Mon, 20 Aug 2018 17:14:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/secret-directive-bans-un-agencies-from-helping-rebuild-syria-until-political-transition-lavrov/ Washington’s “absolutely deconstructive” stance is hampering the rebuilding of Syria and constricts the UN in aiding the country until a so called ‘political transition’ takes place, Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, said.

Washington’s “absolutely deconstructive” stance is hampering the rebuilding of Syria and constricts the UN in aiding the country until a so called ‘political transition’ takes place, Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, said.

“We addressed UNESCO on how they plan to implement the longtime talks, the longtime understanding on attracting the potential of this organization to rebuilding Palmyra,” an ancient city, regarded by the agency as a World Heritage Site, Lavrov said. “From the explanations of why UNESCO has still been unable to get involved in this process actively, we took that there was some kind of a directive from the United Nations headquarters in New York.”

He said that the UN Secretariat, which is the organizations’ executive arms, has “actually issued and distributed a secret directive throughout the UN system in October last year that prohibited the agencies included in this system from participating in any kind of projects aimed at restoring the Syrian economy.”

“Only humanitarian aid and nothing more” was allowed, the minister told the journalists after talks with Lebanese counterpart, Gebran Bassil, in Moscow. “A term was put forward that restoration of Syria would only be on the agenda after a certain progress is made in the so-called political transition” in the country, he added.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that due to the “absolutely deconstructive” stance of the US one also shouldn’t expect any positive decisions on rebuilding Syria and return of refugees to the country from the UN Security Council.

He reminded that following the talks between US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, last week, Washington said that that “any discussion of reconstruction was premature absent a political solution” in Syria.

Lavrov pointed out that such demands are only put forward by the Americans for areas liberated from terrorist and controlled by the Syrian government in Damascus.

“As for the areas held by often non-constructive opposition forces, cooperating with the US… the restoration processes there is, on the contrary, in full swing. Furthermore, the US attracts a number of its allies to funding these activities,” he said.

According to the minister, Washington’s actions contradict the UN Security Council Resolution 2254 from 2015, which stressed the “critical need to build conditions for the safe and voluntary return of refugees… and the rehabilitation of affected area” in Syria.

Moscow is going to continue working with the countries that “understand the urgency of the proposed measures for the return of refugees and creation of necessary conditions for them,” Lavrov said. He mentioned Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey as well as the European countries, in which “there is a growing awareness of the need for concrete steps” in Syria, among such states.

Resolution 2254 speaks about a constitutional reform and free election in Syria, but the US and its allies have been pushing for President Bashar Assad to be removed from the process, despite him being a democratically elected leader, whose popularity only increased after most of the country was liberated from terrorists with help of Russia, Iran and other allies.

'Hilarious & paranoid': Lavrov laughs at idea that Russia uses memes to destroy US democracy https://briefnews.eu/hilarious-paranoid-lavrov-laughs-at-idea-that-russia-uses-memes-to-destroy-us-democracy/ https://briefnews.eu/hilarious-paranoid-lavrov-laughs-at-idea-that-russia-uses-memes-to-destroy-us-democracy/#respond Thu, 02 Aug 2018 13:51:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hilarious-paranoid-lavrov-laughs-at-idea-that-russia-uses-memes-to-destroy-us-democracy/ The idea that Moscow is swaying elections and bringing down US democracy by ‘meme-sharing’ is preposterous, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. The accusations hurled at Russia by the US lawmakers left him baffled.

“It’s just hilarious when I hear that funny pictures can undermine American democracy,” Lavrov told reporters on Thursday, answering RT correspondent’s question about the latest US Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on alleged Russian interference in US domestic affairs.

Experts, brought as witnesses to testify before the Senate on Wednesday, spoke about Russia allegedly using the “less news, more memes” approach online to divide the US public. This led the lawmakers to raise concerns over how Russian “meme-sharing” affects American voters.

“I think that’s just paranoia that goes off the scale,” Lavrov chuckled, saying that talk of weaponizing memes only makes the Senators themselves look bad. “It’s not respectable for American lawmakers to make a sensation out of nothing.”

US politicians consistently accused ‘Russian trolls’ of waging a coordinated campaign to influence elections in the country – something Moscow denies. During repeated hearings in Congress, lawmakers failed to provide any concrete evidence that the alleged nefarious online activity was tied to Russia, and to present data on the effects such a campaign might have caused.

In fact, last year, tech giants Facebook, YouTube and Twitter told Senators that the content allegedly produced by “Russian operatives” made up a tiny fraction of their feeds.

Lavrov: Swiss lab says ‘BZ toxin’ used in Salisbury, not produced in Russia, was in US & UK service https://briefnews.eu/lavrov-swiss-lab-says-bz-toxin-used-in-salisbury-not-produced-in-russia-was-in-us-uk-service/ https://briefnews.eu/lavrov-swiss-lab-says-bz-toxin-used-in-salisbury-not-produced-in-russia-was-in-us-uk-service/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 15:00:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lavrov-swiss-lab-says-bz-toxin-used-in-salisbury-not-produced-in-russia-was-in-us-uk-service/

The substance used on Sergei Skripal was an agent called BZ, according to a Swiss lab, the Russian foreign minister said. The toxin was never produced in Russia, but was in service in the US, UK, and other NATO states.

Sergei Skripal, a former Russian double agent, and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with an incapacitating toxin known as 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate or BZ, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, citing the results of the examination conducted by a Swiss chemical lab that worked with the samples that London handed over to the Organisation for the Prohibition of the Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

The Swiss center sent the results to the OPCW. However, the UN chemical watchdog limited itself only to confirming the formula of the substance used to poison the Skripals in its final report without mentioning anything about the other facts presented in the Swiss document, the Russian foreign minister added. He went on to say that Moscow would ask the OPCW about its decision to not include any other information provided by the Swiss in its report.

Is there a new Cold War? Dutch FM says ‘nyet’ after meeting Russia’s Lavrov https://briefnews.eu/is-there-a-new-cold-war-dutch-fm-says-nyet-after-meeting-russias-lavrov/ https://briefnews.eu/is-there-a-new-cold-war-dutch-fm-says-nyet-after-meeting-russias-lavrov/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 17:06:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/is-there-a-new-cold-war-dutch-fm-says-nyet-after-meeting-russias-lavrov/ Top Dutch diplomat Stef Blok said there is no new Cold War after meeting his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The two also touched upon Syria, the downing of the MH-17, and the Skripal case.

“It’s Friday 13th today and it seemed a good time to visit Moscow,” Blok joked, addressing reporters after Lavrov finished his part of the joint news conference. Both sides seem to have kept the tone light during the talks, despite touching upon issues like the MH-17 tragedy and the spiraling Syrian crisis.

Russia has been blamed in recent years for a seemingly endless list of problems around the world, while much of the Western media has begun to speak about a new Cold War. The Dutch foreign minister said he does not buy into this, though relations between Europe and Russia are indeed going through “difficult times.”

“Those reading the newspapers may think the Cold War is back. I get that question a lot from journalists. If we’ve got our back to each other, we can’t look each other in the eye. So let me once again clearly state side by side, [like] I do with minister Lavrov, that my answer to that question is a plain NYET [Russian for ‘no’],” Blok said.

The Dutch minister stressed that despite existing disagreements, the cannels for communication must be kept open in the interests of both the Netherlands and Russia.

As journalists bombarded the two with questions about the 2014 MH-17 crash in eastern Ukraine, the diplomats remind them that all countries should adhere to UN Security Council resolution 2166. The document, calling for impartial investigation into the Boeing tragedy and international cooperation on the mater, was unanimously adopted by the 15-member UN body.

The Malaysian aircraft was downed by a missile in July 2015, and the West blamed the anti-Kiev forces of eastern Ukraine. There have also been claims that the missile system came from Russia. The information provided by Moscow in the course of the investigation was only selectively accepted by the multinational team of investigators, Lavrov said. This is despite Russia providing uncut radar-location data “that cannot be faked or changed” and “clearly” shows the missile did not come from the direction the investigators claimed.

Rapid conclusions should be avoided, as well as attempts to fit everything into a preconceived idea, according to Lavrov. This applies not only to the MH-17 tragedy, but also to the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria and the UK, the minister stated.

The Syrian government has recently come under fire again as Western leaders, including US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, are accusing it of using chemical weapons in the town of Douma.

While Trump is mulling military options against Syria, Russian specialists on the site of the purported attack have found no evidence to support these claims. Meanwhile, the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) fact-finding mission will only start its work on the site on Saturday.

Since early March, Moscow has also been blamed for the poisoning of ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, UK – again, before the main chemical weapons watchdog said even a word on the matter. On Thursday, the OPCW’s executive summary of its independent findings was made public. The agency confirmed the UK’s findings regarding the type of nerve agent, but provided no evidence to support the claim that Russia was to blame for the attack, which Moscow has repeatedly denied.

‘We didn’t meddle in your election, only in the weather’ – Russia’s Lavrov to Japanese FM https://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-meddle-in-your-election-only-in-the-weather-russias-lavrov-to-japanese-fm/ https://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-meddle-in-your-election-only-in-the-weather-russias-lavrov-to-japanese-fm/#respond Thu, 22 Mar 2018 00:00:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-didnt-meddle-in-your-election-only-in-the-weather-russias-lavrov-to-japanese-fm/

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a ready answer when his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, jokingly suggested that the Russian diplomat was responsible for snowy weather in Tokyo during the visit.

“Mister Lavrov, you brought snow to Tokyo,” Kono said during an official lunch, with the Russian FM being quick to reply: “Since we didn’t meddle in your election, we decided to meddle with the weather.”

The remark was followed by a burst of laughter from both Russian and Japanese officials, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, wrote, relaying the anecdote on her Facebook page. After mocking the unsubstantiated US accusations of Russian interference in the American election of 2016, the Russian FM took out his phone and a took a picture of the snowflakes falling outside the window – a rare sight in the Japanese capital, especially in spring.

It was also Lavrov’s birthday on Wednesday, with Kono congratulating his colleague and presenting him with a cake in the shape a of a soccer ball, a reference to the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by Russia this summer.
