A volcano on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali erupted Monday, sending rocks and lava spewing into the air and unleashing a wave of panic across the island.
Residents reported hearing a loud explosion as Mount Agung flung volcanic rocks at least 2 km in the air. A sea of lava spewed from the crater, which ignited nearby vegetation.
Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB) said the explosions began just after 9pm local time and that the ash column was seen as high as 2,000 meters above Mount Agung’s peak.
About 700 people fled the nearby Banjar Galih village and waited in an evacuation center, SBS News reports.
The volcano, situated in the northeast of the island, has experienced seismic activity and eruptions since last year. In November authorities ordered the evacuation of as many as 100,000 people after the volcano erupted less than two times in a week. All air traffic at the island’s international airport was also halted leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The airport temporarily closed again on Friday, as a precautionary measure.
Mount Agung is only 49 km from the island’s capital of Denpasar, and some 980 km from the country’s capital of Jakarta. Bali is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, consisting of 450 volcanoes and earthquake activity.

The Guatemala volcano death toll has risen to 75, wth another 200 people thought to be missing.
Recovery workers have been struggling in the harsh conditions, with heat from the ground tearing some firefighters’ boots to shreds.
Emergency services are evacuating areas around the volcano after more lava was seen spewing down the side yesterday.
Sunday’s eruption was the largest in the country for four decades and has changed the landscape of the country.
A Briton who was in the area at the time told the BBC: “We were just sitting at home and then suddenly there was rain from the sky but it was black and it was lava ashes.”
Are flights cancelled to and from the country and is the airport still shut? What is the latest travel advice?
The airport reopened yesterday morning after being forced to close on Monday.
After the latest eruption, the US Embassy in Guatemala updated its travel advice.
They wrote: “The Guatemalan governmental agency for natural disasters (CONRED) has ordered an evacuation of some of the Escuintla area and strongly urges against travel to Chimaltenango, and Sacatepequez, including Antigua.
“CONRED also recommends that tourists should not attempt to hike the volcano.
“With heavy rains expected over the weekend, Lahars (a mixture of water, ash and debris) are expected to inundate many of the major thoroughfares in Guatemala, causing hazardous conditions.”
The FCO have not updated their advice today, but wrote yesterday: “Volcano Fuego is going through a period of increased activity, which may cause further travel disruption. Visitors are advised to follow the advice of local authorities.
“Guatemala City’s international airport (La Aurora) closed on 3 June 2018 due to falling ash.
“The airport authorities reopened the airport at 0830 (local time) on 4 June but flights are operating at airlines’ discretion.
“If you’re due to fly to or from Guatemala City in the coming days you should check with your airline before you travel to the airport.”
There are no direct flights from the UK, although airlines such as British Airways, United and American Airlines fly to the country with a stopover.
None of the airlines have issued a travel update today.
Britons travelling to the Caribbean could also be affected by the flight cancellations depending on the ash cloud direction.
Travellers are advised to keep an eye on their flight and contact their airline if necessary.
People are warned to be careful in the south of the country where fast-moving debris and heavy rain is expected.
Incredible footage shows colossal steam clouds rising from the ocean in Hawaii after lava flows from the Kilauea volcano entered the sea at Kapoho Bay.
Lava inundated the bay near Hawaii Island’s eastern tip on Monday night, causing giant plumes of acidic fumes, known as ‘laze,’ to billow from the ocean. Mesmerizing video captured by a US Geological Survey helicopter shows the shallow bay rapidly filling in with cooling lava.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency has issued an evacuation order for residents in the area, as the acidic fumes can prove fatal if inhaled.
Be aware of the laze hazard at the #lava ocean entry at Kapoho Bay. The plume is laden with hydrochloric acid & volcanic glass particles & local to the area around the ocean entry site. Contact with the plume can cause serious irritation to your lungs, eyes and skin. https://t.co/1ml3N0dyd2

Laze is formed when hot lava impacts with the ocean, which sends hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles into the air. Any contact with laze plumes can cause serious irritation to the lungs, eyes and skin.
The Kilauea volcano erupted on May 3, and, as of yet, there is no indication as to when the explosive eruptions might end.

The deadly eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire has affected more than 1.7 million people and created havoc in surrounding municipalities, sending thousands of people fleeing for their lives through streets buried in ash.
As least seven people have been confirmed as killed so far – including two children who were burned to death while standing on a bridge watching the eruption unfold – and dozens have been injured, as the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) continues rescue efforts to locate those reported missing.
Most affected by the massive fall of volcanic ash were the municipalities of Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, Conred spokesman David de León said. A change of wind caused ash to descend on the capital, Guatemala City, before proceeding to eastern and northern regions of the country.
After the Volcan de Fuego discharged ash more than 10,000 meters into the air, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation was forced to suspend all incoming and outgoing flights to the La Aurora International Airport, to “guarantee the safety of passengers and aircraft.”

The village of El Rodeo has suffered the worst, after lava and ash reached the village. Emergency services are now treating the injuries mainly suffered from burns caused by pyroclastic flows. A number of people there also remain missing, after a river of lava overflowed its banks at the village. Cars were also swallowed up in the strong torrents.

A number of houses have been affected in the natural disaster. Authorities, meanwhile, have confirmed damage to two electrical networks and one bridge.
While President Jimmy Morales said a national emergency response in underway, people are advised to wear masks due to falling ash, to take precautions and to evacuate to safe areas if instructed by authorities. Locals are also advised to avoid river banks and to cover food and containers where water is stored for human consumption. After the eruption has finished, authorities urge the locals to clean the roofs of houses.

US Geological Survey
Hawaii’s Mount Kīlauea eruptions have caused damage throughout the Island of Hawai’i, but a new concern has been slowly building: earlier this week Reuters reported that lava is creeping onto the property of a 38 MW geothermal plant called Puna Geothermal Ventures (PGV). Lava damage could cause problems for the plant’s operations in the future, and some officials are concerned that damage to geothermal wells could result in releases of hydrogen sulfide gas, which is toxic to humans. Although lava had been held back by a natural berm for days, yesterday Reuters again reported that a new lava flow had entered the 815-acre PGV property.
Thus far, the only structure that has been destroyed at the geothermal plant has been an old warehouse that was used in the early days of the plant and had been used for storage since, according to a Hawai’i County spokeswoman.

Lava from Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea volcano is edging closer to a geothermal plant, escalating fears of a potentially lethal and toxic hydrogen sulfide explosion.
Molten lava crossed into the property of Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey, heightening concerns that the lava flow could make contact with the power station’s 11 wells.
The potential impact of lava engulfing the facility could be catastrophic. No geothermal plant in the world has ever been exposed to such extreme temperatures.
Footage of the lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea shows the intensity of activity in the region. Fissure 8, one of the westernmost active fissures in the zone, reactivated after destroying dozens of homes over the past few days.
PGV was shut down by authorities at the beginning of May as Kilauea began erupting. Some 60,000 gallons of flammable liquid were removed, and wells were deactivated.
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency confirmed in its latest update that the lava flow in Leilani Estates crossed into PGV property overnight, but it emphasised that no hydrogen sulfide has been detected.
Ten of the 11 wells have been ‘quenched’ with cold water and plugged, while the 11th one was plugged with bentonite clay after quenching efforts failed. Local residents still fear an explosive emission of volatile, poisonous and highly flammable hydrogen sulfide and other gases may occur if the wells rupture.
The Israeli-owned plant typically provides around 25 percent of the electricity on the Big Island. Over the decades, it has been subjected to several health hazard complaints and legal challenges objecting to its close proximity to one of the world’s most active volcanoes.
