Laurent Durieux belongs on the short list of the best pop culture artists working today. His classical style, his subtle wit, and his attention to detail lead to posters that are often astonishing to behold.

Austin’s Mondo Gallery is playing host to Durieux’s latest gallery show, titled “The Art of Laurent Durieux Part Two”, which opens today and runs through November 17. We got in touch with Durieux and he supplied us with the inspirations behind and origins of every print on display and for sale at the show, including posters for Planet of the Apes, Ghostbusters, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, and more.


Conan the Barbarian

“It was first a commission from Milan Records France, whom I had worked with before for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Oldboy soundtracks LP artworks. It’s also one of the first, if not the first movie I watched in a theater as a kid and it left a great impression on me. I was scared that when I had to re-watch it to do the poster, the movie would have aged badly, but it really didn’t. It was just as awesome for a 48 year old guy as it was for an 11 year old boy.”


Planet of the Apes

“Believe it or not, as a kid, I collected the Planet of the Apes figurines. The TV shows were very popular in Europe in the late ’70s. So when I was asked to chose the movies, choosing POTA was a no-brainer to me. I had to do it. I re-watched it again, and just like Conan, it is still as great a movie today as it was 40 years ago.”

Ex Machina

“This movie is in my top five best science fiction movies of all time (along with Blade Runner, Alien, Gattaca and Star Wars). The scenario is perfect – everything in this movie is just first rate. I think it will be regarded as a masterpiece of anticipation fiction (like Netflix’s Black Mirror) in a few years. The idea for my poster was to illustrate the fact that Caleb found himself prisoner of Ava’s manipulative intelligence. Like we could all be very soon with AI…or aren’t we already?”

Ghostbusters

“I was done with my show and Mondo’s Mitch Putnam contacted me to see if we could add a true geek film to the list. So I did it. It’s always a personal challenge for me to tackle movies that are so popular you would almost choke. It’s not my favourite movie as it is, I’m sure, for many younger folks, but it’s pretty cool and it does remind me of my teenage years way back when.”


The Shining

“I don’t usually like horror movies, but here, it’s so much more than that. What could I say? Kubrick’s masterpiece of horror is a genuine masterpiece indeed. Its one of those you can watch a hundred times and discover new things, new details you hadn’t noticed before. There are so many layers on this film, that I think I could have made 10 different posters for it. The typewriter/axe project was originally done as a concept sketch for one of my fans who attended either MondoCon or ThoughtBubble in Leeds and I always loved it. There are quite a lot of existing projects with the typewriter out there, but I somehow managed to come up with something no one had thought of before.”

The Shining

“Here is an iconic sequence from the film. I couldn’t really do anything for The Shining and not use this scene. The image without the door of Room 237 hidden on the tricycle back seat wouldn’t be interesting at all. I’m not sure people will see the idea straight away, but just like my Jaws poster, it’s hiding in plain view.”

Apocalypse Now

“Three years ago, I was contacted by Francis Ford Coppola’s collaborator to ask me if I would be interested in designing/creating the visual for a steel box edition of the film. I had to turn down the offer as my schedule wasn’t allowing me to do it and told them that they probably would have to wait a couple of years before I could get to it. I was expecting them to tell me, “Well, okay, we’ll find someone else who could do it for us quicker”, but to my surprise, they said “Mr. Coppola will wait.” Apparently, Francis didn’t want anyone else but me to tackle his masterpiece of a film. What an honor!”


Apocalypse Now

Titanic

“This was a convention sketch commission done during Thought Bubble in Leeds. I showed it to Eric Garza right then and asked if they could get the license for it, as there are plenty of Titanic fans out there. You know who you are. Yes, you there with the badass tattoos! I love the movie, period. I thought the idea was pretty cool and witty. That’s our job as creators to bring new interpretations on films.”

Mystery Train

“This was originally commissioned by Milan Records France to design the artwork for the LP/CD soundtrack. I had never seen the movie before that and I loved it! Steve Buscemi alone was a good reason enough for me to do it. I love the atmosphere of this film and love the director, Jim Jarmusch. Mystery Train is one of those films that stay with you for many years after you’ve watched it.”

Elevator to the Gallows

“This image was originally commissioned by Milan Records France for a fantastic re-edtion of the Miles Davis soundtrack to Elevator to the Gallows. I had this perfect idea with the jacket cover and dust jacket, but this will never happen as the folks at Milan told me (way too late when the art was finished) that they didn’t get the license to publish it after all. Being my favorite piece of the lot, I just couldn’t bring myself to not print it or show it to people. So Mondo was very happy to make it available as an art print and that’s awesome! I LOVE THIS FILM NOIR MOVIE! If you have never watched it, please do yourself a favor.”







Tucker: The Man and His Dream

“I have a passion for vintage cars, even moreso for vintage cars that has a retro-futuristic look. I first saw this movie when it came out in the late ’80s and loved it. Martin Landau has one of his best roles ever, if you ask me. I’m not even going to talk about Jeff Bridges who is, like in all of his movies, great! This poster/image was originally commissioned by Francis Ford Coppola’s winery, as they wanted it for their Director’s Series wine label.”

“The Art of Laurent Durieux Part Two” is open to the public at the Mondo Gallery, located at 4115 Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas. Posters that don’t sell out during the gallery’s initial run will go on sale online at a later date.

The defender has been crocked since suffering a serious leg injury during the Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid last season.

However, he is now back training with the Gunners first-team after a lengthy stint on the sidelines.

Emery said: “The most important is his feeling every day and that he can feel better at each training.

“He is close to being with us and also (playing) in the competition games but, at the moment, we are happy with him, he is feeling well.

“He is getting better every day and we are going to think after the internationals.

“I hope we can continue working and start to think about him playing games.”

The international break kicks off next week.

The France national team host Uruguay on November.

Koscielny won’t be in contention, but he could be back for the Gunners imminently afterwards.

Arsenal play Bournemouth on November 25 before a Europa League game against Vorskla Poltava four days later.

The clash with the Ukrainian outfit – which could be a dead rubber – looks the opportune fixture for Koscielny to get some game time.

Arsenal host Sporting Lisbon at the Emirates tonight.

A victory over the Portuguese heavyweights secures qualification for the knockout stages.

“We find our focus in two ways,” Emery said.

“One is this competition is very important for us. It’s one way to a title and to get into the Champions League next year.

“The second focus is on our work, to continue improving. Above all, I want to continue at the Emirates with our supporters, with the same spirit as in the same matches as against Blackpool, Leicester, Liverpool.

“Tomorrow is a very good test for us and for those two ways. They are a team with very good players and a very good history in this competition.

“They changed the coach, but I think it is a big match for them to play for first position against us. But we want to give a big match with our personality.

“Of course the first (aim) for us is to finish first in this group.

“Tomorrow is a very important match because they are second in the table and, if we win, we are first in the group.

“That’s our clear target tomorrow.”

Welbeck’s injury woes continued in Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Watford yesterday.

The 26-year-old was making his first appearance after recovering from a hip injury but was forced off the pitch just after the hour mark.

He has played just 42 competitive games since the end of the 2014/15 season after missing a large chunk of last year due to a knee cartilage injury.

And he could be set for another setback with Wenger confirmed Welbeck suffered a hamstring injury against Watford.

“It looks to be a hamstring with Welbeck,” Wenger said.

“I don’t really know because everybody is shocked in the dressing room [about the result]. It looks a muscular problem.”

Koscielny was also unable to finish the full 90 minutes on his first return to the side since Arsenal’s 2-0 win over West Brom more than two weeks ago.

He was suffering from an ongoing achilles tendon injury but with Shkodran Mustafi facing an indefinite period on the sidelines Wenger was keen to bring the France international back into the side.

However, Wenger admitted after the game that the centre-back also picked up a problem in the game against Watford.

“Koscielny is a muscular problem as well,” Wenger added.

“I don’t know [if there are signs that Wenger will leave]. Sometimes I could say yes and sometimes I could say no so I think we will respect his decision.

“He has given a lot to this club during 20 years and done an unbelievable job so we need to respect this and we will respect his decision at the end of the season. 

“For me, he is a person I like a lot. He is a big part of my life and my career so I have a lot respect for him. I can’t say anything about him, just nice things.”

The country’s leading women’s group has called for the campaign to be pulled.

France’s advertising authority says the brand “uncontestably breached” its rules by launching the campaign, which also features a model in a leotard and roller skate stilettos bending over a stool.

The regulator’s director, Stephane Martin, spoke to AFP about the complaints the authority has received, noting that most were from people who saw the images as an “incitement to rape.”

“I am not sure that [Yves Saint Laurent’s] female clients would like to be associated with these images,” he said.

“We had a similar type of porno chic [in fashion advertising] a decade ago, and here we have it coming back again which isn’t acceptable,” Martin added.

He went on to say there is a possibility that the fashion house’s young new designer, Anthony Vaccarello, had unintentionally gone too far.

“We have a rather young designer known for his rather ‘specific’ looks,” Martin said, adding that it is possible that “in this rather closed world, with its specific codes, that they [Yves Saint Laurent] did not realize” the effect the adverts would have.

The authority bans all “degrading and humiliating representations of people,” and has the power to demand that advertisers withdraw or change their campaigns.

Martin said it will decide on how to proceed after meeting with the label on Friday.

Meanwhile, France’s leading women’s group, Osez le feminisme (‘Dare to be Feminist’), has called for the campaign to be pulled, branding it “misogynistic.”

The group’s spokeswoman, Raphaelle Remy-Leleu, said the subtexts of the images are “extremely violent.”

“It ticks all the sexist boxes. The women are objectified, hypersexualized and put in submissive positions,” she said.

“How do they think they will sell anything today [to women] with that?” Remy-Leleu continued, considering the possibility that the scandal was intentional “so we would talk about them.”

Others also took to social media to express their anger at the campaign, with one person tweeting that ”women are not objects.”

Another showed a side-by-side comparison of the current campaign next to one from 1967, stating that today’s theme is “anorexia, submission, and humiliation.”

“Is this the image you want for women in 2017?” another asked, urging the fashion house to end the campaign “immediately.”

Another sarcastically said “what a way to celebrate women’s day,” referring to International Women’s Day, which will take place on Wednesday.

It’s not the first time that Yves Saint Laurent has come under fire for its advertising. Osez le feminisme previously raised complaints about an ad which used a “very young hypersexualized woman.”

Two years ago, Britain’s advertising watchdog banned an ad by the fashion house which showed an overly thin model whose ribcage was showing.

Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent is considered to be one of the world’s most prominent fashion houses, selling merchandise ranging from clothing to jewelry and shoes.
