Laurel Thomas (played by Charlotte Bellamy) used to be married to the Emmerdale’s vicar Ashley Thomas (John Middleton), and as a man of God, he was constantly explaining the reasons behind some of the lessons life threw at him and his wife. But in recent months, Laurel has been tested far beyond what she thought she could cope with. In upcoming scenes, she left teetering on the edge of destroying her sobriety. Luckily, an intervention occurs, but will Laurel listen if she is advised to leave the village for a while and seek help? As a recovering alcoholic dating a recovering drug addict, Laurel has done her best to keep her relationship with Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) and make their dysfunctional family happy. A few weeks ago, when she found out she was pregnant and viewers saw Laurel experience a mixture of emotions. But she was challenged further when she was told the baby had Down syndrome. Despite making the difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy, Laurel has been left harbouring feelings of grief and guilt. READ MORE: Emmerdale spoilers: Debbie Dingle makes decision over her future In heartbreaking scenes, ITV viewers saw the storyline play out from several character’s perspectives; Laurel and Jai, Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) – with the latter having welcomed Leo, an extremely happy Down syndrome child into their lives nine years ago. With Laurel only a few years away from hitting 50 years old, she made the heartbreaking decision to not have her and Jai’s child. While she knew this was the right choice for her and her family, she faced judgement from Rhona who wasted no time being extremely vocal with her criticism. Over the last few weeks, Laurel has got on with her day-to-day routine, seemingly coping. However, when she attended David Metcalfe’s (Matthew Wolfenden) ‘welcome to the family’ party hosted by Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu), her sobriety was questioned. Fans will see her contemplate what she should do next; drink it or pour it down the sink. But her thought process is interrupted by an alert from her phone, it is a pregnancy app which delivers a cruel blow. Succumbing to temptation, Laurel knocks back a shot of vodka, feeling a sense of release as she swallows. She is interrupted by Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) bursting through her front door and the community busy-body catches her red-handed with the bottle. It isn’t long before Nicola questions her best friend, and instead of passing judgement or shouting at her, Nicola holds Laurel. Finally, Laurel tells Nicola about the baby and the termination, and the cafe owner’s heart breaks for her. When Nicola gets a moment to herself, she calls Jai and when he arrives home, he sits Laurel down and talks to her. Jai reminds his partner that he understands the battle she is enduring with alcohol, as well as reminding her he also empathises with her grief for their baby. Will he be able to help Laurel? Or has the current circumstances become too much for her and she feels the need to leave the Dales for a while and gather her thoughts? Speaking about the storyline previously, the actress who plays Laurel said: “Terminating a pregnancy is an emotive subject, but I think, as a programme, what Emmerdale does brilliantly is portray difficult stories that are important to tell. “Laurel and Jai’s story will take the audience on the journey of them coming to this conclusion and having some understanding why they do. “There are some very powerfully written scenes that I hope will give a fair portrayal of their situation. “When I embarked on this storyline I was well aware of the responsibility of the subject matter, but the scripts have been so well written and I think the story is told fairly,” she added. Viewers were left divided by the storyline, with some understanding of Laurel’s choice and other criticising. What a difference a year makes.
When How to Get Away With Murder‘s fourth season came to a close last March, Laurel Castillo’s father had been thrown in jail, her mother had gone off the grid, for better or worse, and life at Middleton University seemed to resume some version of normalcy (except for the lingering mystery of Gabriel Maddox, that is).
But during Thursday’s fifth season finale, the Castillo family made a comeback of sorts, reminding all of us — especially Laurel herself — that defeat won’t come so easily. First, let’s briefly break down what happened in the final Season 5 installment:
* Via flashbacks, we learn that Laurel’s brother, Xavier Castillo, had approached Ronald Miller a few months back, claiming that he could help make Miller the actual district attorney instead of just the interim guy — and it would start with the death of Nate Sr. Throughout the episode, we’re initially led to believe that Miller wanted to work with Xavier wholeheartedly, and that he was OK with Nate Sr.’s murder if it meant becoming D.A. Later, though, it’s revealed that Miller secretly tried to get Nate Sr. transferred from the prison on Wednesday night, a full 12 hours earlier than the Thursday-morning transfer that Xavier had requested, in order to avoid Nate Sr. getting killed.
Miller’s efforts, though, were all for naught. Xavier had found out that Miller was trying to play him, and he paid the prison guards to kill Nate Sr. when he was being moved at night. Miller had been heartbroken to see Nate Sr.’s death on the news, and even more devastated to realize that he’d gotten involved with someone very, very dangerous.
* Laurel sees the video footage of her brother meeting with Nate Sr. at the prison, and she’s convinced that her family has been behind all of these unsavory events ever since Wes died. Together, she and Annalise confront Xavier and reveal what they know: that Xavier had Nate Sr. killed, that he’s been working with Gov. Birkhead to destroy Annalise and that he killed Sandrine. (Xavier claims not to know anything about his mother’s whereabouts and insists he didn’t hurt her… but this is also Xavier Castillo we’re talking about, so I don’t exactly trust him.)
After Laurel and Annalise leave, Xavier calls Gov. Birkhead and reveals that his sister and Annalise foiled his master plan. “So, Plan B?” he asks the governor, to which she responds, “She’s given us no other choice.” Later, while Annalise and Laurel are walking down a Philadelphia street, Annalise answers a phone call from Tegan — and halfway through the conversation, she realizes that Laurel is no longer standing next to her. In fact, Laurel is nowhere to be found.
At the same time, Frank bursts into Laurel’s house and races up to Christopher’s nursery, only to find that Christopher is missing from his crib. “He’s gone, Annalise. They’re both gone,” Frank tells Annalise, who is left to helplessly scream Laurel’s name in the middle of the street.
* Gov. Birkhead goes on live television to tell the people of Pennsylvania that Emmett Crawford is a person of interest in both Nate Sr.’s death and Miller’s death. Even worse for Emmett? After pouring himself a drink in his office later that night, he falls to the floor, convulsing, having presumably been poisoned. (Or perhaps having a heart attack? He is clutching his chest, after all.) Emmett is still alive the last time we see him, even though he’s gasping for air — but on the other hand, Timothy Hutton did just book a pilot for the fall TV season. Hmm.
After screening Thursday’s finale, TVLine spoke with HTGAWM star Karla Souza, who portrays Laurel, to get her insights on her character’s mysterious disappearance (and what it means for a potential Season 6). Read on for her thoughts:
TVLINE | I was a little surprised to see Laurel’s family return in such a big way this season, given how nicely that storyline seemed to wrap up in Season 4. Were you surprised by that, as well, or was this something you and showrunner Pete Nowalk had previously discussed when Season 5 began?
Ever since my family was first revealed in the show at that dinner party [in Season 1], Pete had deliberately planned for my father, my mother and my brother [to be involved]. I had previously done an audition with someone to play [Castillo family friend] Dominick, and Gerardo [Celasco], who plays my brother, had auditioned with me. He was lovely, and he and I had a lot of chemistry, but I remember Pete saying, “I’m holding off because I think he looks like you too much. I don’t think he should play Dominick, I think he should play your brother later on in the show.” So, I had heard Pete’s idea to have my brother in the background, kind of as the Mini-Me version of my father. And seeing as my father was put in prison, I also had that idea of, “OK, that storyline’s kind of wrapped up, that’s it.”
But when I was talking to Pete creatively, as we have every year, we were talking about the implications of what it means to have a son in all of this. Once Christopher’s involved and witnesses a murder, I would definitely make a decision about that, as a new mom. I couldn’t just keep saying, “Oh, this isn’t safe for my son,” and just not do anything. Something must be done. Laurel sees that however much they try to get out of the danger zone, they just keep coming back, and then after she receives her mom’s scalp, she realizes that her premonitions of how evil her family can be are true. In a way, it adds to the guilt of Laurel feeling that her family has been involved in all of the bad stuff that’s happened to the Keating Five since Wes’ death. That’s why it makes this disappearance interesting. The fans might think that Laurel disappeared of her own accord, or that maybe Laurel was abducted by her family in some way, or killed. Those are two avenues that could very well be plausible because of Laurel’s constant fear of having Christopher in this world.
TVLINE | In this finale, the Keating Five learns that Laurel had the opportunity to take an immunity deal with the FBI, which she chose not to do. Did Laurel ever seriously consider taking the deal and getting out of there?
For sure. I definitely played, at least for me, that it was a possibility. If you had to decide whether to protect your son or protect your friends — as a mom, all bets are off when it’s regarding your child. [Laughs] But however close she comes to making that decision, she also realizes the loyalty she has for them. And because of the guilt she feels at her family being the motor of all the bad things going on, that’s why she decides to hold herself accountable and promise that she will be loyal to them. It’s her way of saying, “No, you guys have been loyal to me, I’ll be loyal to you,” and she has to think of another plan.
TVLINE | Laurel has a big confrontation with her brother in this episode, but he seems to be genuinely surprised by the news that something bad happened to their mother. Does Laurel have any doubts in that moment? Did Xavier perhaps have nothing to do with it?
As we were working that scene out with Gerardo and [episode director] Stephen Cragg, we said that Laurel’s been the No. 1 concealer of all her cards on the show. She’s been able to put on a front for anyone questioning her, she puts on a whole show for Gabriel. And because [Laurel and Xavier] are part of the same family… it’s open as to whether he knows or not. He plays it very well, but I would say let’s not be fooled by a Castillo. [Laughs] That’s all I would say about that.
TVLINE | And at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, do viewers have reason to be suspicious of Laurel, as well? We never did see Laurel’s last conversation with her mom, and we don’t know for sure that she didn’t hurt Sandrine. Should we take Laurel’s words at face value and believe that she’s simply a victim of her terrible family?
No, I don’t think Laurel is a victim. I definitely think she plays a part in it, and for me, that’s the more interesting part to play. We’ve seen, more and more often — I mean, she hid that [engagement] ring from Michaela for so long [in Season 1]. She’s capable of a lot of things to get her own way. And now, her own way is protecting her son, so she’s capable of hiding and portraying whatever she needs to in order to have that plan work.
TVLINE | The show hasn’t been renewed for Season 6 just yet, but this finale ends on a major cliffhanger. Were there ever any discussions with Pete, or the writers, about giving this episode a tidier ending since the show’s future is uncertain?
I genuinely think… you know, it would be wrong of me to speak for Pete, but for us, as we’re reading the season, we’re seeing how our show still has a strong fanbase. We’ve never doubted that the show would be picked up. Having Viola Davis at the forefront of a show for network TV — I feel like they’re lucky to have her. I don’t think the writers were thinking that this would be our last season, and I never got the sense from Pete that he felt he had to have a Plan B. I do think he has confidence in the show and the writing.
That’s a wrap, Murder fans! What did you think of Thursday’s finale (and Season 5 overall)? Cast your votes in our polls below, then drop a comment with your reactions!

The back half of Arrow Season 7 has plans for ADA Laurel Lance above and beyond her giving Oliver side-eye during his TV news program appearances.
As Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz revealed as part of TVLine’s in-depth midseason preview Q&A, “We are doing a Birds of Prey-inspired episode, that Laurel (played by Katie Cassidy) will be involved with.”
The famously spoiler-averse Schwartz left the tease at that, other than to invite viewers to speculate as to who might join Laurel on that team-up. (In the comic books, the actual Birds of Prey is typically comprised of Black Canary and Oracle/Barbara Gordon, plus a rotation of other female superheroes. The short-lived 2002-2003 TV series featured Oracle, Dinah Lance and Huntress.)
In addition to the above — as well as an episode that will shed light on this Laurel’s Earth-Two backstory — Schwartz said, “We’ll get to see what happens in her overall redemption arc — whether she really did turn over a new leaf, or is she still the same evil Black Siren we met last season.”
Arrow resumes Season 7 this Monday, Jan. 21 at 8/7c; watch for TVLine’s larger midseason preview (…and more) in the days to come.

Emmerdale viewers are still left in the dark about what really happened to Joe (played by Ned Porteous) last autumn.
However, one thing for certain is Graham (Andrew Scarborough) had some involvement with his disappearance.
And it seems, he is very close to revealing exactly what happened to Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy).
It comes after Kim Tate (Claire King) made her explosive and highly anticipated return to the village before Christmas and one of her very first demands was to get rid of Joe.
Unsatisfied with his work, she ordered Graham to get rid of him, but with the businessman having an emotional attachment to Joe, he gave him the opportunity to run away with a life-changing sum of money.
Whilst Joe initially agreed, he couldn’t leave Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) behind and decided he would swing by the hospital chapel, where they were set to get married and leave with her in tow.
But, having delayed their wedding long enough, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) went looking for his soon-to-be son-in-law and that is when the worst happened.
Anger taking control, Cain punched Joe causing him to fall and smash his head on a rock, to which Graham then declared him dead.
Yet viewers saw Joe’s finger’s twitch as Graham lifted him into his car – could he have just been unconscious instead of dead?
Nevertheless, Graham drove to an unknown location and took out a spade, walking into the distance.
It was presumed he had finished Joe off and buried him as the scene following saw him sitting in his car crying.
However, the soap did not show Joe’s body coming out of the car, being carried or buried. Could he have been alive and Graham gave him another chance to run away?
Since then, Graham has been playing with Debbie, making it look like Joe was still alive but had just jilted her.
Until recently when the mechanic received a series of parcels from her fiancé.
After Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade) clarified she had set up the presents following Joe’s wishes, Debbie filed a missing person’s report to the police, convinced her boyfriend was still alive and out there somewhere.
Worried Debbie was capable of finding out the truth, Graham has been turning to the bottle, even though he is meant to be recovering from alcoholism.
And this is where Laurel comes in. Earlier this week, Graham visited Laurel for a chat.
“Look I’m here if you ever need to talk to someone who has been through what you are going through.
“But Graham, what you really need is a sponsor. The meeting aren’t enough, you need that support,” she explained.
As a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for several years now, soap bosses seem to have directed Graham to Laurel.
Will she be his sponsor?
Scenes have already shown Graham fall off his recovery plan several times now, and should Debbie find another clue and go to confront him, will it edge him closer to the alcohol?
Thus in turn, Graham could turn up in the dark hours at Laurel’s house looking for someone to talk to.
In his drunken stupor, will he expose his involvement in Joe’s disappearance to Laurel?

Earlier this week, the internet erupted around a new obsession tailor-made to go viral. It started with a one-word snippet of recorded audio that had actually been circling the web for awhile, but unclear pronunciation made it an aural Rorschach. The question ‘Do you hear ‘laurel’ or ‘yanny?” rallied everyone to pick a side. But why do stories like this, reminiscent of the great dress color debacle of 2015, captivate the internet?
What do you hear?! Yanny or Laurel pic.twitter.com/jvHhCbMc8I
— Cloe Feldman (@CloeCouture) May 15, 2018
The recording that first circulated around Reddit and later Twitter turned out to be a distorted version of an audio pronunciation of the word “laurel” on Vocabulary.com. Per Wired, however, the story starts at a high school in Georgia where a student found the odd vocalization and passed it around to her friends, who were split on whether the clip said “laurel’ or ‘yanny.’ Linguists and speech academics were quickly reached to explain the maddening disparity: Essentially, folks with ears tuned to hear lower frequencies pick out ‘laurel,’ while those trained for higher ones hear ‘yanny.’ Plus, the low-quality recording and variety in headphone or speaker quality warps the audio even further for each listener.
1/7 Okay dweebs, here’s the science behind that “laurel vs. yanny” thing people keep sending me. It has to do with which frequencies of the sound are actually making it to your brain. This can be affected by several things: headphones / speakers, listening volume, hearing loss…
— Dana Boebinger (@dlboebinger) May 15, 2018
The laurel/yanni debate went viral for a reason: It asked an innocuous question that prompted inexplicable answers. Sure, we guessed it had something to do with subtle differences in sensory capability, which eventually explained why people saw ‘the dress’ differently. But for a moment, discovering there was no observable rhyme or reason to why you heard something that a sizeable chunk of the internet didn’t was unsettling. It had the same thrilling appeal as forum copypasta, but offered another dilemma to an outrage-primed audience that gets riled up by debates as dumb as ‘is a hot dog a sandwich.’
And while the divide was more compelling as unexplainable witchcraft — it first went viral on the subreddit r/blackmagicfuckery, a forum for natural phenomena — even with science-assisted clarity, it’s still fascinating to see which side you land on. The different things we hear reminds us that our world, and ourselves, are far more unknown than we think. And just like rabidly binging a true crime podcast or following a Twitter meltdown, the rise of laurel-vs-yanni was a ride from wild start to its logically-explained conclusions.
The internet will always birth new viral content, but most (remember Pen-Apple-Pineapple Pen?) are just media flotsam to enjoy and forget about. Laurelmania is the rare interactive mystery that also serves as a litmus to divide the angry internet against itself. And once in awhile, it’s a relief to get absurdly furious about something that doesn’t matter while the world continues to burn.

In a delightful bit of irony, How to Get Away With Murder‘s Laurel Castillo wants to make sure her father doesn’t get away with murder.
But by the looks of TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek at tonight’s episode (ABC, 10/9c), Laurel is sorely lacking support for her revenge plot against dear old Dad, who she suspects is responsible for Wes’ death.
