A Kansas police department has actually been forced to warn people not to eat laundry detergent after a series of online memes sparked a dangerous ‘challenge.’

The joke about Tide laundry detergent capsules being fruit-flavored snacks has been circulating on the internet for years. The so-called “challenge” of eating the pods started in 2016, but the ridiculous trend has recently experienced a resurgence thanks to a series of memes depicting the pods as “forbidden fruit.”

“How is it 2018 and we have to warn people to not eat laundry detergent?” wrote Lawrence Police Department on Twitter, while alluding to the trend.

The warning was prompted by a KSHB report from Phoenix, Arizona, in which toxicologist Dr Frank LoVecchio said doctors have seen multiple cases recently where teens intentionally consume the pods.

Needless to say, ingesting chemicals meant for cleaning is generally not advised. If consumed, the pods can burn your mouth, lips and esophagus, while the soluble synthetic membrane that holds the liquid can cause central nervous system depression, LoVecchio warned.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, there were more than 10,500 reports of laundry pod exposures among children of 5 years and younger in 2017

As a rule, the detergent pods are only meant for clothes, and certainly not for consumption, according to a statement from Tide’s parent company Procter and Gamble. “They should not be played with, whatever the circumstance is, even if it is meant as a joke,” read the statement.

Silicon Valley royalty Anne Wojcicki may own a billion-dollar company, but she still tries to keep her life and her kids grounded.

Wojcicki, the cofounder and CEO of personal genomics company 23andMe and former wife of Google cofounder Sergey Brin, said she tries to protect their two children from the “insanity” of megawealth in an interview with The New York Times‘ Maureen Dowd.

“I have people who clean the house three days a week,” she told Dowd. “And I just told them to stop doing laundry on Fridays because my kids need to learn how to do laundry on Fridays. It’s so easy to be like, ‘I don’t have to do laundry again. I don’t have to cook again.’ But then you’re not normal. I have a new rule lately. I just don’t go out on weekdays. If I’m raising kids, I need to be focused on helping implement that normalcy.”

She also said that she cuts her children’s hair herself, and, to save time in the morning, sometimes lets them wear their clothes to bed.

“The other thing I used to do, when we’d travel in the summers, because I don’t like to pack a lot,” she told Dowd, “and so I’d have the kids bathe in their clothes and then they change into something else. And then their clothes are clean for the next day. Versus the hotel laundry, which is so expensive.”

As for how she keeps herself grounded, Wojcicki says she rides her bike to work every day (even in the rain), and doesn’t make “fancy cars and houses and the right dress” a priority.

Doing laundry might be dead simple for most people, but the visually impaired don’t have it so easy. To make that easier, GE Appliance’s skunkworks division FirstBuild — along with the help of a 14 year-old — has designed a system called Talking Laundry. With a name like that, the invention is pretty self-explanatory: it’s a metal box (below) that audibly tells you how much time is left in a given wash cycle, and simplifies controls to one knob each for a washer and dryer.

Using a board computer and FirstBuild’s Green Bean tools that convert code to machine language, teenage Jack DuPlessis (his dad works for GE and gave him the task) put a prototype together in the span of a weekend. Talking Laundry can even be retrofitted onto existing laundry machines; its sales page states that the module will connect to “most” current and all future laundry units.

Maybe best of all, these are available to buy right now and they won’t break the bank. One unit will control both a washer and a dryer and will only set you back $ 99 — a far cry from that $ 16,000 voice-controlled laundry folder.
