THE STAND-UP comedian’s handbook doesn’t have a huge chapter on mental health jokes and even though the stigma may be crumbling it’s a dark corner where few are willing to tread. From mother-in-law gags to observational riffs on anything from school places to supplies of humus, mainstream comedy tends to play it safe.![]()
But Felicity Ward is tackling taboos until they reveal their funny spots, winning a huge following and exposing an alternative approach to mental health issues – which affect one in four people in the UK.
“I like a challenge,” laughs Felicity, who is appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and starts a new BBC Radio 4 comedy series looking into anxiety, depression and irritable bowel syndrome this week, trying to find solutions to her problems using apps.
“I’ve got heaps of issues so why not make the most of them? If you take a subject that is a little more challenging and get people to laugh at it then the pay-off is much greater and more rewarding.”
Felicity has presented documentaries on mental illness and is candid about her own issues but rebuffs any suggestion that her work is a crusade.
“My job on stage is to make people laugh and that’s all I want to do,” says the 37-year-old Australian, who now lives in London.
“I don’t think I’m a voice of anything but I offer something different.
“Professionals talk about mental health even if they don’t necessarily have it or it is spoken about by well-meaning people in the community who are very earnest and serious. The advantage I have is that I’m making jokes from the inside rather than the outside. I have the experience to speak about it and, maybe more importantly, make jokes about it.
“One person emailed me after a show from their doctor’s surgery saying they had been in denial about their anxiety issues but seeing my set made them do something about it.
“I’ve got messages from people who said their parents took them along and, from not being able to talk about their issues, they now have a common language and can make jokes about mental health. It is not something I set out to do but it is a beautiful by-product.
“I’m not trying to change anyone’s lives. My sole purpose is to make people laugh but it feels nice to make jokes about mental health because people don’t joke about it that often.”
Felicity has been a regular on Australian TV but her move into the limelight was stalked by depression, anxiety and IBS which has followed her since her teenage years.
She decided not to hide them and made the acclaimed documentary Felicity’s Mental Mission which challenged public perceptions of mental health conditions.
She has built a huge following on the comedy circuit with a series of sell-out shows and appeared on a string of TV comedy and panel shows.
“A different conversation has developed around mental health over the past five years but people don’t make jokes about it, and understandably so. Yet when people who have it get together and talk to each other, they joke about it and have laughs because our behaviour is crazy at times.
“Part of my comedy is about making an in-joke accessible to people who don’t have mental health issues and they all get in on it. And there are rarely any awkward moments – unless the joke isn’t funny – and people get more uncomfortable when I talk about IBS. It doesn’t actually occur to me to feel embarrassed about the subjects.”
Felicity, who embarks on a national tour in October, has had counselling sessions, cognitive behaviour therapy and indulged in mindfulness apps, which sparked the source material for her Radio 4 show.
It dissects the booming trade that has seen more than 10,000 mindfulness apps crowd the market at a time when official support services are stretched or non-existent in some areas of the UK.
She says: “No one thing works for me and I think that is true for most mentally ill people. The shows are a cheeky look at the apps. They are not serious research but I have listened to an awful lot of self-esteem and IBS apps along the way.
“The comedy is in no way a therapy or cathartic for me. I deal with every serious medical issue I have off-stage with professional help first and only when I feel I have a deep understanding of it and have tools to deal with it, can I talk about it on stage.
“Because of my emotional make up, I don’t want to get half-way through a run and have a sudden realisation, as it wouldn’t turn out well – there is not much of a filter between my brain and mouth.”
The MasterClass subscription series has an incredible collection of some of the most iconic and respected minds and talents in various fields. But their assembly of talent from film and television is especially impressive. The likes of Martin Scorsese, Steve Martin, David Mamet, Hans Zimmer, Shonda Rhimes, Aaron Sorkin and Ron Howard all have their own MasterClass, and now one of the most successful names in comedy does too.
The Judd Apatow MasterClass brings the director, writer and producer of some of the most successful comedies of the past 20 years (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, This Is 40, Trainwreck) in to teach you how to think about comedy. You might think it’s impossible to learn how to be funny, but maybe you’re just not looking at comedy from the right perspective. Watch the Judd Apatow MasterClass trailer to see what he’s going to teach you.
Here’s what Judd Apatow intends to teach you in this class:
That’s a pretty great line-up of lessons. Perhaps the two most interesting ones for aspiring writers and filmmakers will be about pitching projects to studios and networks and merely navigating the entertainment industry. Plenty of people think they know how it works behind the scenes, but it’s infinitely more complicated and maddening than that.
The comedic lessons will be invaluable too. Some of these lessons you learn with time and with seeing other comedians and getting perspective from fellow artists and audiences. But it’s good to have a place to start and to have guidance when you’re still trying to figure it out. But being “good” at comedy is something that takes years of practice, and any comedian will tell you that.
Our own Chris Evangelista took the time to subscribe to the Martin Scorsese MasterClass, and he said, “If you’re interested in filmmaking, this is great, and if you’re a huge fan of Scorsese, as I am, it’s even better.” Even if you’re not looking on how to make a film, this is a fascinating series to watch, because as Chris notes, “Scorsese isn’t telling you how you should go about making a film; instead, he’s telling you how he approaches filmmaking personally. This is less a class about filmmaking than it is a class about Scorsese’s brand of filmmaking.”
So for anyone who is a comedy fan or loves Judd Apatow’s work, this should be well worth it. You can take the Judd Apatow MasterClass for $ 90 at their official website. You can also pay $ 180 for a year of access to all their classes.

Jeremie Saunders has a fatal illness and wants to talk about it. He and his friends mix raw emotion with waves of laughter in the infectious podcast Sickboy.
]]>The 40-something comedian didn’t hold back, with the jokes or the inspirational calls to action, while describing growing up with cerebral palsy. “I was treated just like my sisters — if they were cleaning, I was cleaning. I told my mom, ‘I can’t clean, I’m disabled.’ She would put a towel under me and have me scooch,” she said. “My parents fought to mainstream me. If they hadn’t won that battle, I wouldn’t be sitting here.”

Zayid has a long history of smashing stereotypes. The first woman to perform stand-up comedy in Palestine and Jordan — uncensored and uncovered — she is also the co-founder of the New York Arab-American Comedy Festival, which debuted in 2003. Despite her disability, she fulfilled her lifelong dream and tap-danced on Broadway to a sold-out crowd as part of the Arabs Gone Wild show. She even performed stand-up at last year’s Republican National Convention, at which Donald Trump accepted the presidential nomination. “Believe it or not, it wasn’t the worst gig I’ve ever done,” she said backstage at OZY Fest. “At the time, we thought Trump was a joke, but now that we know it’s real, it’s the worst thing I’ve ever done.”
Following her set, which was filled with pointed identity comedy about disability, feminism and Islam, convention attendees gave Zayid a standing ovation and then gathered round to try to persuade her that a Trump presidency would be better for her, she said. Given the contemporary climate around the issues she discusses, it’s difficult to avoid politics in her comedy. She’s also usually “way fiercer” than the TED Talk, which was “all about just making sure they broadcast it.” The RNC gig taught her that “laughter crosses boundaries. Until they put you in an internment camp, and then you’re fucked.”
Hollywood shuns diversity. [Disabled people] are the largest minority in the world, but we represent only 2 percent of the images on television.

Being a Muslim in America has become harder than being disabled in recent years, according to Zayid. “I’m inundated with hate, and not just from internet trolls,” she said. “It’s become the mainstream media. People have discussions about whether my faith is a religion or not, whether Muslims can really be American.” But despite this, “being a woman is the hardest thing of all.” And although her comedy and her advocacy aim to challenge stereotypes and give a voice to underserved issues, “my No. 1 duty is to make people laugh,” she said. “If I ever feel like I’m going out on stage just to preach and not make people laugh first, I’ll quit comedy and become an evangelist.”
Zayid didn’t always have her comedic instinct. “The lost Kardashian,” as she calls herself, was “a complete drama queen” growing up and obsessed with soap operas. “When I went to college, I even had designated spots where I would go and weep,” she recalled. She originally pursued a career in acting, an experience that fueled the passion behind one of her most forceful points: “I was hitting a dead end, and it’s because Hollywood shuns diversity. [Disabled people] are the largest minority in the world, but we represent only 2 percent of the images on television. Of those, 95 percent are played by nondisabled people … we call it ‘cripping up.’”
Inspired by Richard Pryor, Zayid transitioned to comedy 17 years ago. “I realized that laughter makes people who hate you and want to harm you, listen to you,” she explained. And living in New York City, post-9/11, meant “it was really important for me to get people laughing and get them to relate to me so I could make my enemies my friends.”
Another topic on which Zayid’s personal experience leads to a mixture of incisive comedy, heartbreaking personal stories and powerful social narratives (in true Pryor fashion) is social media. “If I grew up with social media, I wouldn’t be doing the career that I’m doing right now, because the bullying that people with disabilities face, especially teens and young adults, is paralyzing,” she explained, recounting some of the comments she received after her breakthrough moment, appearing on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, in 2010. “We were raised to believe that ‘sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.’ That’s completely untrue,” she said. “Words matter.”
Again, Zayid cannot avoid referencing contemporary politics, even if only implicitly. “We’ve been taught that being politically correct is a bad thing. I don’t want to use the term ‘politically correct,’ I want to use ‘decent.’ We need to get back to decency,” she said. “If you have nothing nice to say, go scream it in a mirror at yourself.”

Eva Latterner, Gillet Rosenblith, and Sophie Abramowitz (full disclosure: a close friend) write for Slate about the very real, damaging impact that Confederate statues have had on black communities in Charlottesville, VA, particularly in their facilitating of displacement. The article comes in the midst of previous and upcoming planned protests and rallies from the likes of the alt-right and the KKK against the removal of statues and renaming of former confederate parks in the area. Latterner, Rosenblith, and Abramowitz write:
What has been missing from this fight, though, is the specific history of Charlottesville’s Confederate statues. Intimately tied to Charlottesville’s city planning projects and its persistent displacement of black residents, that context is emblematic of the relationship in the South between urban renewal and gentrification, Confederate memorialization and Lost Cause white supremacy, and the town-and-gown dichotomy inherent in university communities…The statues of Jackson and Lee not only symbolize the violence of the ongoing displacements of gentrification; they also initiated and facilitated these changes when they were first put up.
Under Trump/Scott Pruitt, the Environmental Protection Agency appears to be becoming more an agent of environmental destruction. In the New Yorker, Elizabeth Kolbert writes about the EPA’s intention to rescind the Obama-era Clean Water Rule (also referred to as Waters of the United States or WOTUS), and how, separately, back in March, Pruitt reportedly met with the head of Dow Chemical before declaring an end to another Obama-era ban on a neurotoxic pesticide called chlorpyrifos. (Most of it, she notes, is produced by Dow AgroSciences, though an E.P.A. spokesperson claims they didn’t talk about the pesticide when they met.) Kolbert writes:
Of course, if the Trump Administration was really interested in “regulatory certainty,” the rational thing to have done would have been to keep the Obama-era rules in place. wotus had already been finalized. The proposed change will take years to wend its way through the rule-making process—we can only hope more years than the Trump Administration has left. Similarly, the Administration’s decision to reverse course on chlorpyrifos will result in more uncertainty, rather than less. Already, seven states have filed legal objections in an effort to force the agency to follow through on the recommendations of its own scientists.
Vince Staples’ second studio album, Big Fish Theory, is experiencing near-universal praise following its release last week. As you familiarize yourself with it, instead of guessing or turning to critics who’ve guessed at Staples’ musical influences, you can read his own words on his 10 favorite songwriters, published in the Guardian. On André 3000, he says:
“It’s not a duplicate of anything; it’s the way he structures his sentences and delivery. It’s not directed by the punchline, there’s no crescendo – it’s just like: this is what happened…Everything is a conversation. It never feels impersonal. Do I wish he did more? No, not at all. If he wants to be an artist, then that’s his art – take it or go home.”
He says of Amy Winehouse:
“I don’t know a weak Amy Winehouse moment. She was always creatively strong. Look at Stronger Than Me, Fuck Me Pumps, anything from Frank. It’s always been there. She was honest, and honesty is important. She showed the evil within people…”
Adrienne LaFrance writes for the Atlantic about the Golden Record — a “sonic postcard, of sorts” onboard the twin Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecrafts, meant to present the soundscapes and landscapes of earth to whatever Heptapods or Xenomorphs might stumble upon them. Contemplating one particular audio clip on the record — of the sound of laughter — led LaFrance down a rabbit hole. She describes:
It occurred to me last fall that I’d never actually heard the laughter track—and that I wanted to. What sort of laugh did the record’s producers select as a depiction of our species? And whose laugh was it? It could have been a chuckle, a snort, a guffaw, a snicker. It could have been anything from the irresistible staccato of a baby giggling to a the deep-throated mwahaha of a Hollywood villain. But my idle curiosity led me to more and more questions, and those questions turned into a months-long investigation into the origins of the Golden Record.

Day one of Royal Ascot almost ended in disaster for the Countess of Wessex, 52, when she suddenly tripped over in the carriage she was riding in.
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Countess of Wessex, Sophie, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge were sharing the same carriage while riding in on day one of the horse racing event.
But things took an unexpected turn after she stood up in the carriage, lost her balance and tripped over.
Luckily, the Countess fell into the safe hands of the Duchess of Cambridge.
Stopping Sophie from falling flat on her face or out of the carriage, Kate used her fast reactions and held out both her hands to steady the Countess.
Once the shock moment was over, the two royals burst into laughter, before carrying on with the day’s events.
The Duchess of Cambridge was dressed in crisp summer white to this year’s Royal Ascot.
She wore a high neck white lace dress with a fitted top and full skirt, which she chose to wear despite the UK heatwave.
The dress had a delicate white ribbon tied around the waist, and she paired the dress with a nude snakeskin clutch bag.
She wore no other jewellery on her hands but her impressive engagement ring.
Topping the look off was a hat which featured small white flowers and delicate pearls.
The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her thrifty style, wearing outfits more than once.
But it was Queen Elizabeth II today who showed signs of being thrifty today.
The Queen arrived wearing a bright, colourful green outfit with a matching hat.
And the outfit she wore was the same two-piece she wore to the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings back in 2014.
Although she swapped out the brooch for another one, the outfit was exactly the same.

Did you hear the one about a group of emergency room doctors who moonlight as singing comedians? No, it’s not a joke.
