After having trouble scoring at 5-on-5, Connor McDavid and the Canadians proved to be deadly at 3-on-3.
McDavid scored 46 seconds into overtime, batting his own rebound out of the air past Latvia goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis, as Canada edged Latvia 2-1 Monday and clinched a quarterfinal berth at the world hockey championship.
The combination of McDavid, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Aaron Ekblad dominated play at 3-on-3 in the overtime session as Canada got two much-needed points.
"Those guys are so deadly with the puck, especially with Connor's speed," said Canadian forward Ryan O'Reilly. "The way he beats the guy up the wall and creates a scoring chance and ends the game, it's definitely dangerous. That was huge, getting that goal."
Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring for Canada 2:51 into the first period, staying with the play to shovel in a loose puck after Gudlevskis failed to completely freeze a tip in front of the net by Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
"I thought the play was dead, then I saw the puck behind his pads, so I was just trying to find it," said Beauvillier on his second goal of the tournament. "It was probably one of the easiest goals I've scored in my career."
Beauvillier skated on a line with Pageau and Mat Barzal as coach Bill Peters shuffled his units in an effort to spark more offence after a disappointing 5-1 loss to Finland on Saturday.
"I thought it was a mixed bag," said Peters about the changes. "We're still trying to find the right combinations. Tyson Jost went in there and played well — I thought that line [with Bo Horvat and Jordan Eberle] was good. I thought the Barzal line probably had their best game of the tournament.
"I thought those two lines were dangerous for us on a consistent basis. Now we've got to get contributions from others throughout the lineup."
After being outplayed and outshot 10-4 in the first period, the hardworking Latvians applied good pressure in the second. Close-checking at the defensive end of the ice, Latvia also drew two penalties and fired nine shots on goal in a scoreless middle frame.
"They played us really hard," said goaltender Darcy Kuemper. "They worked their butts off and didn't give up a whole lot."
Kuemper was sharp through two periods in his first start since Canada's tournament-opening 5-4 shootout loss to the United States on May 4, but was beaten 1:50 into the third on a Kristian Rubins point shot, Latvia's 14th of the game.
"I just picked it up a little bit late," Kuemper said. "[Rubins] shot it and I didn't have good eyes on it. I saw it last second, just got a piece of it and it snuck through."
Thomas Chabot, who was scratched to make room for Marc-Edouard Vlasic in Canada's loss to Finland, returned to the lineup on Monday to anchor the first power-play unit, while Ryan Pulock was scratched on defence.
In the late stages of the third, Canada turned up the aggression, jamming the net in front of Gudlevskis, who was making just his second start of the tournament after giving up eight goals to Finland on May 6. Canada outshot Latvia 9-2 in the third and 31-15 through regulation, but extra time was needed to decide the winner.
Forward Kyle Turris was added to Canada's roster after his Nashville Predators were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, but did not suit up on Monday. He could see action in Canada's final round-robin game against Germany on Tuesday. Pierre-Luc Dubois did not dress against Latvia due to a lower-body injury. He's listed as day-to-day.
With Monday's win, Canada is guaranteed a top-four finish in Group B and a quarterfinal berth. Canada could finish anywhere from second to fourth in Group B, depending on the outcome against Germany and the results of Tuesday's two other games: Finland versus the United States and Denmark versus Latvia.
In Tuesday's late game in Herning, the hosts from Denmark will meet Latvia to determine the fourth quarterfinalist.
Norway beat South Korea 3-0 in Monday's other Group B game. Both teams had already been eliminated from playoff contention.
In Group A action in Copenhagen on Monday, Russia beat Slovakia 4-0 and the Czech Republic beat Austria 4-3.
]]>The statement approved by the State Duma on Tuesday reads that the Latvian authorities’ actions contradicted the mutual respect, understanding and cooperation between all people who live in the country, regardless of their ethnic, cultural or language background. The document also reads that such steps violate the principles of the European Union and the Council of Europe, of which Latvia is a member, as well as the rules established in the majority of civilized nations.
Russian lawmakers now intend to send the address to the United Nations, parliamentary assemblies of the CSTO and OSCE blocs, to the leadership of the European Union, and to the parliaments of all the bloc’s member nations.
In addition, the Duma deputies stated that the freshly signed Latvian law could lead to reciprocal measures from Russian, such as a partial or full ban on financial operations, the increase of import tariffs, restrictions in the sphere of tourism and the suspension of certain bilateral trade agreements.
Earlier this week, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis signed a bill that excludes lessons in Russian from the curriculum in all of the country’s schools, including schools specifically for ethnic minorities. The only exception is for classes in the subjects of Russian language and literature, or unspecified subjects “connected with culture and history.”
Latvia’s Social Democratic Party ‘Harmony’ protested against the new law, saying that it contradicts both the constitution and the Council of Europe’s framework convention on protection of minorities, which was adopted and ratified by the Latvian parliament in 2005. Harmony called for the reversal of anti-Russian education reforms, but the authorities did not heed the minorities’ opinion.
Despite the fact that Russian speakers make up to 40 percent of Latvia’s 2 million population, the only official language is Latvian and passing a language test is a strict requirement for receiving citizenship. This has resulted in a situation whereby hundreds of thousands of people have to live with a “non-citizen” passport. Most of these non-citizens are ethnic Russians and large numbers of them are Belarusians and Ukrainians, but there are also Poles and Lithuanians. Non-citizens have no voting rights, cannot serve in the Latvian military or police, and are officially banned from working as civil servants, lawyers or pharmacy salespersons.

Russia has demanded that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) take concrete steps to ensure press freedom in Latvia, after the Baltic state deported a Russian documentary maker without explanation.
“We hope you will immediately take measures within your mandate to change this approach of Latvia authorities towards Russian journalists. Declarations are not enough, actions are highly needed,” tweeted the Russian foreign ministry Friday night, in response to an OSCE statement published earlier.

Olga Kurlaeva, a documentary maker for Russian state television company VGTRK, was this week placed under guard, taken to a deportation center, had her visa annulled, and then whisked to the Russian-Latvian border and set free on the other side in the middle of the night. Her husband, Anatoly, also a journalist, was deported along with her.
Harlem Desir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, wrote in an open letter to Riga that “Free access to information and free flow of information between the participating States contribute to the freedom of the media in the OSCE region and are an essential part of the broad concept of security on which the organization is based.”
“That’s why I call on the authorities to reconsider the use of restrictive and selective measures in relation to foreign journalists who pursue their professional activities,” continued the text, which has been published on the OSCE website. Desir expressed particular alarm as “the reasoning for such restrictive actions in both cases lacks transparency and remains unclear.”
Previously, the Russian foreign ministry appealed to the OSCE to resolve the situation before it spirals out of control, with Moscow warning it would have to resort to “retaliatory measures.”
Latvian authorities said it’s their right not to explain their decision in a public statement, and asked Brussels to cancel Kurlaeva’s Schengen Area multiple entry visa.
The journalist said she had been treated well by security personnel but was given no explanation about the decision, other than that “it came from above.” She has produced several documentary films criticizing Baltic politicians and the treatment of Russian-speaking minorities in the former Soviet Republics. She was conducting filmed interviews on a legal visa when she was detained and deported.

Thousands of people carrying torches gathered in the Latvian capital, Riga to celebrate Independence Day. Praised as a “beautiful” march by the organizers, anti-fascist activists claim the rally has clear signs of the torchlight processions of Nazi Germany.
The Latvian right-wing National Alliance (NA) party, also known by the name ‘All for Latvia!’ is behind the torchlight march. In recent years, the rally has become an Independence Day tradition. Latvia declared independence from Soviet Russia in 1918 after World War I. In 1940, it became part of the USSR, and regained independence in 1991.
Thousands marched through central Riga on Saturday, torches in hand. While some came prepared, others were provided with free torches by volunteers, RIA Novosti reported. “It is our tradition. It’s beautiful in the first place,” participants told the news agency.
In the 1930s, quite a number of Nazi rallies and parades were held with torches in Hitler’s Germany. The organizers deny “any analogies” with the Nazi Germany processions, claiming theirs should not be “linked to politics,” as people are just “celebrating the anniversary.”
Not everyone agrees, however. “We absolutely associate this torchlight march with the ones in Germany in the 1930s,” the co-chair of Latvia’s anti-fascist committee, Josef Koren, told RIA. During the march, “radical nationalistic” slogans can be heard, shouted by participants, he claims.
Earlier this week, a Latvian NGO submitted a draft bill to the European Parliament calling for sanctions against politicians involved in promoting Nazi ideology in the EU – including through marches and other public events – to be introduced. The legislation has already been signed by a number of European parties and organizations, including from Hungary, Finland, and Germany, Izvestia reports.
The torchlight independence celebration is not the only public event considered controversial by anti-fascist activists. Marches openly celebrating former Nazi collaborators and Waffen SS members have also been held in Latvia. Although the Latvian government officially opposes those rallies, it allows them to take place annually on grounds of free speech.

Steadfast Pyramid 2017 and Steadfast Pinnacle 2017, involving more than 40 senior officers from NATO member states, plus Finland and Sweden, will take place at the Riga-based Latvian Defense Academy, the country’s national news agency LETA reported on Sunday.
Steadfast Pyramid, the first part of the exercise, will last until September 15. It is reportedly “to improve the ability of top-level officers and commanders to plan and lead joint operations,” according to LETA.
Steadfast Pinnacle, the next stage of the drill, will last from September 17 until September 22. Steadfast Pyramid and Steadfast Pinnacle were first held in Latvia in 2011.
British General James Everard, the NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, is expected to arrive in Latvia to oversee both stages of the exercise, Latvia’s Defense Ministry said, according to LETA.
Not much is known so far about the war games. A NATO fact sheet says Steadfast Pyramid and Steadfast Pinnacle are focused on “further developing the abilities of commanders and senior staff to plan and conduct operations through the application of operational art in decision making.”

Latvia, a former Soviet republic, has seen a major NATO buildup over the past months. Recently, NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland as part of Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP). These combat-ready battlegroups, led by the UK, Canada, Germany, and the US respectively, are meant to demonstrate “the strength of the transatlantic bond.”
A 1,100-strong battlegroup led by Canada is stationed in Latvia, comprising a number of mechanized infantry units as well as a tank company and some support elements, according to NATO.
Poland and the Baltic states are calling for a stronger military presence in their countries, claiming it is necessary to deter “assertive” Russia.
Lithuania, another Baltic state, has suggested developing a “military Schengen project that would facilitate the movement of troops in Europe.”
Earlier this week, Lithuanian Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis said the Benelux countries – Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg – as well as Finland and Estonia, support the plan, which includes “simplifying procedures and investing in infrastructure.”
Moscow has consistently said the ongoing buildup threatens Russian and European security. In mid-July, Russian envoy to NATO Alexander Grushko said the alliance is pushing forward for “an intensive mastering of the potential theater of military operations, accompanied by the development of the necessary infrastructure.”

From July to November, NATO will hold 15 drills complementing each other, “which are held in the same operative field and aimed at providing a vast range of support measures,” Grushko added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that Moscow will not remain silent facing emerging threats on its western borders. NATO’s saber-rattling leaves Russia no other choice than to “give a suitable response to all of these actions,” he said, noting that Moscow’s countermeasures will be “much cheaper,” if not quite as technologically advanced, Putin told award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone.

Soldiers from Latvia, the US, Bulgaria, Estonia, Canada, Lithuania, the UK, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovakia, Germany and also non-NATO member Sweden are taking part in the drills, which have been held in the country since 2004.
The servicemen are due to practice a range of combat support elements, including artillery, air defense, reconnaissance, defense against weapons of mass destruction, support of combat and construction engineers and anti-tank capabilities, LETA news agency reports, quoting the Latvian Defense Ministry.
Air support controllers, fire support observers, medical company and transport units will also show off their skills.
Initially set to prepare units for a coalition forces operation in Iraq, the annual drills have been included in NATO training and exercises program since 2014. Summer Shield, one of the country’s largest military exercises, is open to any member of the military bloc to participate.
The exercises are now said to be a part of Russia-deterrence policy, according to Latvian national armed forces commander, Leonidas Kalnins.
In an interview to “Morning panorama” on state TV Kalnins referred to the upcoming Russian-Belarusian joint drills ‘Zapad 2017’ as a risk factor, noting that Latvia will be able to immediately respond to any Russia’s action.
The increasing NATO build-up in Eastern Europe, the largest of its kind since the Cold War, has been consistently criticized by Moscow.
“They always have one thing on their mind: the ‘Russian threat’ myth, ‘Russian aggression’ slander and endless mantras about the need to confront it collectively,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in March following a recent NATO summit.
A decision to deploy thousands of troops along with multiple pieces of military hardware to Baltic States and Poland was reached during a NATO summit in Warsaw back July 2016. The forces were supposed to be first moved to Poland for war games and then scattered across seven countries, including Baltic States.
“This deployment is, of course, a threat for us,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov said early April, arguing that the large-scale drills at Russia’s doorstep are bound to “gravely increase the risk of incidents.”
He vowed a proportionate response from Moscow to any kind of potential threat to its borders, saying that “their every action will be followed by either a positive or negative answer.”
Earlier this month, 1,350 NATO soldiers arrived in northeast Poland in line with the planned buildup. British RAF fighters are scheduled to be stationed to Romania in May.
In March, the UK began sending over a total of 800 soldiers to NATO member state Estonia, which borders Russia to the east.
“We deplore that deployment for it raises tensions in Europe along the border between NATO and Russia. Russia doesn’t pose any threat to Estonia nor any other NATO member state,” Russian ambassador to the UK Alexander Yakovenko told the Daily Mail.
