Jan Vertonghen started Belgium's comeback with a crazy, looping header and Nacer Chaldi capped it by finishing off a 10-second, end-to-end attack in the final moments.

It added up to a 3-2 victory over Japan on Monday that gave the Belgians a spot in the World Cup quarter-finals for the second straight tournament.

Trailing 2-0, Vertonghen scored with a header in the 69th minute that appeared to be a cross but somehow dropped in under the bar. Substitute Marouane Fellaini headed in another from Eden Hazard's cross in the 74th.

Chaldi, who came on as a substitute in the 65th, decided it with virtually the last kick of the game in the fourth minute of injury time.

Belgium goalkeeper Thibault Courtois grabbed a corner kick and rolled the ball to Kevin De Bruyne, who dribbled to the top of the centre circle and passed to Thomas Meunier on the right. Meunier one-timed the ball across the area and Romelu Lukaku let it roll by for Chaldi to tap in with his left foot from seven yards.

Belgium is the first team to overturn a two-goal deficit in a World Cup knockout match since West Germany beat England in extra time at the 1970 tournament. The last team do it in regulation was when Portugal beat North Korea in the 1966 quarter-finals.

"It's a test of character. It's a test of the team," Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said. "You have to see how the substitutes react, how the whole team reacts."

Belgium will next face five-time champion Brazil in the quarter-finals on Friday in Kazan.

Japan led through early second-half goals by Genki Haraguchi and Takashi Inui, but they couldn't hold on.

Classic match

"When we were up 2-0, I really wanted to score another goal and we did have opportunities," Japan coach Akira Nishino said. "We were to some extent controlling the game, but Belgium upped their game when they had to."

What was expected to be a mismatch ended up being a classic, partly because of Martinez's decisions to send on Fellaini and Chadli as substitutes in the 65th minute.

"In football, sometimes you want to be perfect," Martinez said. "In the World Cup and especially in the knockout stage, it's about getting through."

Belgium, which narrowly avoided joining Germany, Argentina, Spain and Portugal as big-name eliminations, won all three of its group matches and scored a tournament-leading nine goals at that stage.

Japan narrowly scraped through, advancing ahead of Senegal because it had fewer yellow cards.

The Japanese have now lost in the round of 16 three times without ever reaching the quarter-finals.

Four Japanese players fell on their knees in despair after the final whistle. Hiroki Sakai and Gen Shoji were in tears.

Canada faltered at the World Women's Rugby Sevens Series, losing to the United States 28-26 in the Cup quarter-finals, failing to advance to the semifinals in Langford, British Columbia. 

Canadian Bianca Farella scored the go-ahead try with just over a minute remaining to give Canada a 26-21 lead, but the Americans scored in the dying seconds of the game to move back ahead for victory.

They made their way into the quarter-finals by going 2-1 on Saturday, including an impressive 19-17 win over Ireland.Their other win came against Spain, and their loss was to Australia.

They will now England in the fifth-place semifinal at 3:48 p.m. ET, after England lost to New Zealand 17-12.

Stefon Diggs ran into the end zone as the clock expired on Sunday night, pulling off a Minnesota miracle and sending the Vikings to the NFC Championship.

The Vikings opened up their game in dominant fashion, taking a 17-0 lead into halftime with their ticket to the next round looking all but secured. But the Saints would come back in the second half, culminating in a stunning drive from Drew Brees in the final minute that earned New Orleans the go-ahead field goal with just 29 seconds left on the clock.

All hope looked lost for the Vikings, but Case Keenum was able to push Minnesota to their own 40-yard line with nine seconds remaning on the clock, needing a miracle to win.

The prayer was answered.

Stefon Diggs found an overthrown ball from Keenum on the sideline, a Saints defender inexplicably whiffed on the tackle, and Diggs stayed in bounds to make his improbable run to the end zone.

The play is just a miraculous from different angles.

With the win the Vikings secure a spot in the NFC Championship in Philadelphia next weekend. With a win there, the Vikings could return to Minneapolis to become the first team to ever play in a home Super Bowl.

Luck seems to be on their side.

The Kansas City Chiefs pulled off what will go down in history as one of the wildest covers in gambling history on Sunday night.

Going into their matchup against the Wahington Redskins, the Chiefs were seven point favorites, meaning if bettors wanted to back them, the Chiefs would have to win by more than seven for their bet to cash.

Over the course of the game, that outcome seemed highly unlikely and as the game progressed to the fourth quarter, it seemed clear that it would end in a one possession game.

Knotted at 20-20, the Chiefs drove the field with their final possession to make it into field goal range with just seconds remaining. Rookie kicker Harrison Butker nailed a 43-yard field goal to snag the win for the Chiefs, but more importantly for gamblers, seal the Redskins cover, with Washington still within seven points with just seconds to play.

But bettors likely thought too soon.

After the Redskins took a touchback, Kirk Cousins and company lined up for one more play.

It did not go as expected, and left people who had money on the Chiefs elated. And if there was any doubt, one only need hear the call by ESPN’s Sean McDonough, who called as the Chiefs were scoring, “Kansas City has it. This might be meaningful to some! Houston scores a touchdown!”

McDonough knew!

With the miracle score, the Chiefs made it 29-20 with no time remaining on the clock. The nine-point lead meant that those who bet on Kansas City, with nothing but the grace of luck guiding them, won their once lost bets.

But the gut-wrenching gambling outcomes weren’t over for the night.

As the Chiefs lined up for their extra point attempt, the over/under, a bet for how many total points would be scored in the game, still hung in the balance. For many, the line hung at 49.5, meaning just one made extra point after this miracle touchdown would mean that over bettors were just as blessed as their fellow gamblers who backed the Chiefs.

But it simply wasn’t meant to be.

Rather than kick the extra point and assure the over, Andy Reid elected to line up in victory formation, and kneel on the extra point. The total landed on 49, saving under bettors a lot of cash and endless heartache.

It should be noted that the over/under line opened at 49.5 before moving south. So there was cheering and screaming on both sides of that decision.

So cheers to those who bet the Chiefs, and deepest condolences to those who backed the over early on.

And to the poor soul who chose to parlay the two, the lesson, as always, is that gambling is a cruel mistress.

The Florida Gators beat their rival Tennessee Volunteers with a 63-yard Hail Mary touchdown on the game’s final play. 

In what was a mostly ugly game, it appeared that the Gators and Vols were destined for overtime, or possibly a long field-goal attempt by the Gators. Instead the latest incarnatiuon of this rivalry ended dramatically in regulation when Tyrie Cleveland got behind the defense and hauled in the Hail Mary pass from Feleipe Franks.

South Korean Overwatch pro Miro is probably the best Winston player in the world. His deft tank work helped South Korea win the first Overwatch World Cup and he took home personal tournament MVP honors as well. If you want a highlight reel of his best moments, well here you go.

Miro’s Lunatic-Hai squad was playing Misfits earlier this afternoon, and he showed off his gorilla skills with an exquisitely timed Jump Pack recovery. When Winston pops his ultimate, Primal Rage, he gets a big health boost and the damage of his melee attacks increases. Because you can’t activate his tesla cannon while he’s ulting, players’ ability to maneuver around the map is key to success. As a master gorillaman, Miro knows the precise limits of his ultimate, and he leapt over the edge of the map to and punch out the opponents’ Mercy while taking heavy fire from Pharah. He looked dead as hell, but made perfect use of the diminished cooldown time on his Jump Pack and got back up to safety.

The move came just after 2:18:42 in this stream.

The announcers wrote him off, but if anyone was going to pull off this sort of last-ditch mid-air save, it’d be Miro.
