Most lasers are either friendly tabletop devices or so small that you don’t even notice them. But if you want to do something special like image the structure of a delicate protein, you need a very short wavelength and very high-power laser. That means a free electron laser (FEL).

I love FELs, but they’re expensive. A laser produces one beam, and that beam is usually limited to one or two users at a time. So competition for beam time at FELs is fierce. That may be about to change, though. An unexpected experimental result at the Linac Coherent Light Source may be the key to making multiple beams from a single FEL undulator line.

The Russian military have released stunning footage of Peresvet combat laser systems entering test service, shedding a bit more light on the cutting-edge weapon.

A short one-minute video shows the laser system “getting on test duty” outside Teikovo, a town west of Moscow. The system slowly comes out of a hangar and ejects a barrel-shape device, presumably a laser lens.

The camera then quickly films Peresvet’s control room and an operator handling the system by remote control.

The Defense Ministry said crews had undergone rigorous training to ensure the sophisticated system is manned properly during deployment.

Although Peresvet was presented to the public by President Vladimir Putin earlier this year, little is verifiably known about the secretive weapon. Experts divided on the exact purpose of the laser, wondering if it is a powerful jamming device or a system able to engage airborne targets.

In July this year, the Russian military released another video of the combat laser, featuring at least two truck-mounted systems, accompanied by several command and support vehicles.

During a speech to the Federal Assembly on March 1, Putin revealed a wide range of brand new weapons systems, including the combat laser system. The Russian President asked the public to suggest and vote for the names of those weapon systems.

The state of the art combat laser received its name in honor of Peresvet, a famous warrior monk who fought at the 1380 Battle of Kulikovo which ended the Mongol domination of Medieval Russia.

A laser was shone into the cockpit of a passenger plane which was flying at 29,000ft (8,840m). Humberside police have confirmed the incident happened on Saturday as the plane flew over North East Lincolnshire.

The Scandinavian commercial flight from Manchester to Bilund, Denmark, was hit by the laser at 18:45 GMT on Sunday.

A spokesman for the force stated that the “captain of the flight reported to National Air Traffic Services (NATS) that he was over the Ottringham Beacon and had the cockpit illuminated by a laser coming from a coastal town to the starboard (right) side of aircraft.

“The NATS team have assessed the flight’s path and location and have assessed that it came from the Grimsby area.”

No-ill effects were recorded other than the pilots being “dazzled,” the spokesperson added. 

Police stated that the “very serious incident” could lead to a jail sentence of up to five years, under the Laser Misuse (Vehicles) Act. They have appealed for information.

The incident comes as threats to flights are on the increase. Earlier in October, a high-flying drone missed a Virgin Atlantic jet by ten feet (3 metres), in what is thought to be the closest ever near miss between the gadget and an airliner.

Under laws brought in earlier this year, drones are only allowed to fly below 400ft (122m), they are also required to avoid flight paths and be within sight of their operators at all times.

There were more than 50 reports from airline pilots of near-misses with drones in 2016, according to a report by the Ministry of Defence and Military Aviation Authority.

In its report to the Russian Academy of Sciences, the company asked to support its research and development, as well as experimental work to create a solid-state laser that will be able to shoot down space junk by vaporizing it with a beam.

The powerful ‘laser cannon’ will be based on a three-meter optical telescope, construction of which is already underway. The telescope, designed to monitor space for satellites and potentially dangerous space junk, will be transformed into an equally giant laser if the project is greenlighted.

A type of solid-base generator will supply power to the laser, the report, seen by RIA Novosti, says. The space trash destroyer will use the process known as “laser ablation” to remove the debris from spaceships or any other junk, like a cosmonaut’s lost glove floating in low-earth orbit, which is between 160 to 2,000 kilometers (100-1,240 miles) above the Earth’s surface. The laser’s energy heats an object that is pierced with a beam until it gradually evaporates.

NASA estimates that there are more than 500,000 pieces of space junk “the size of a marble or larger,” which can be tracked as they are travelling at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour around the Earth. It warns that even “a relatively small piece of orbital debris” can inflict damage upon spacecraft and satellites. Of about 500,000 pieces of space debris, 20,000 are “larger than a softball.”

With more countries engaging in space exploration, the task of avoiding collisions with the growing mass of space debris becomes ever more pressing. As the concerns mount, a number of countries have already entertained the sci-fi-like idea of creating a weird mix of a laser weapon and a garbage processor. Back in 2015, Japan’s RIKEN research laboratories said they were planning to add a small laser to a telescope they were developing for the ISS, and scale up the method if it proves to be successful.

The idea has been picked up by China. In February, scientists at the Air Force Engineering University in China published a study suggesting that the junk could be blasted by space-based lasers.

Australia’s EOS Space Systems revealed in March it is also working on the photon pressure laser. However, the laser is designed so it will not incinerate the debris completely, it will just be able “to nudge space objects around, change their orbits.” However, such approach might actually clutter space even more, as there is a chance that objects will break in two, researchers warn.

A long range of proposals, including giant nets and harpoons to grab debris, have been made by scientists over the years. In April, the RemoveDEBRIS device, equipped with a net and a harpoon, arrived at the ISS on board a Falcon 9 rocket.

In 2017, Japan failed an attempt to clear space junk with a 700-meter tether that was created with the help of a fishing company.

Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa, hosts a U.S. military base that is home to about 4,000 personnel, including special operations forces, and is a launch pad for operations in Yemen and Somalia.

Today, we are going to tackle a topic that every science journalist fears deeply: topological insulators. Fear not dear reader, once your head explodes, you’ll feel nothing. Besides, these aren’t just any topological insulators, they’re topological insulator lasers, which definitely makes the pain worthwhile.

The question that should be foremost in your mind is: why would you combine the least-easily explained concept in physics with something so cool as lasers? And the answer is because it makes for a pretty good laser.

Before we get to how a topological insulator can improve a laser, let’s take a look at what makes a laser so difficult.

The new USS Portland warship, currently en route to San Diego, California, to be commissioned, has been chosen to host the new laser weapon technology created by the Office of Naval Research.

The laser weapon is considered a next-generation follow-on to the Laser Weapon System (LaWS) that was tested for three years in the Middle East, Program Manager Captain Brian Metcalf said, Defense News reports.

The new laser will be a “bolt-on” to the USS Portland’s arsenal on the ship’s deck, and will not be integrated into the ship’s other systems, Metcalf said, according to the US Naval Institute.

Although the Navy has no concrete plans to mount a new laser onto other assault ships in the amphibious fleet, Metcalf said the USS Portland crew could test and host the new laser indefinitely.

Metcalf commented on the ship and laser at a briefing at the Surface Navy Association annual symposium in Arlington, Virginia.

“My guess is if this works and they like it, it’s going to be there for a while. The ship is going to go use the thing, and then we’ll start talking about how do we make this part of the ship’s total system,” Metcalf said, according to Defense News.

“We’re very excited about it. It’s supposed to install while I still own the ship and am responsible for it, and then we would turn it over to the fleet for capability wherever the commanders decide,” Metcalf added.

Metcalf did not give specifications for the new laser, pointing out that his own specialism is ships, not the development of the new weapon. The captain did, however, address the possibility that the laser could be used in future warfare.

“It’s not going to be integrated into the warfare system. It won’t be providing tracking data or classification data,” Defense News reports.

Metcalf’s office is still waiting on drawings from the Office of Naval Research in order to finalize the laser’s installation on the ship, the captain said.

No exact date has been given for the laser test.
