  • Mediterranean Shipping Company rerouted its vessels to help protect blue whales near Sri Lanka.
  • Conservation groups recommended the move after research showed it could help avoid whale collisions.
  • Blue whales, which are endangered, grow to be 80 feet long and can live for 80 years.

The largest container line in the world has rerouted its ships passing near the coast of Sri Lanka in order to avoid potential collisions with endangered blue whales.

"MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has taken a major step to help protect blue whales and other cetaceans living and feeding in the waters off the coast of Sri Lanka by modifying navigation guidance in line with the advice of scientists and other key actors in the maritime sector," MSC said in a statement provided to Insider.

MSC said the action was taken in response to research conducted by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) along with other groups and universities. The vessels passing through Sri Lanka's coastal waters will now travel about 15 nautical miles to the south from the previous route.

Blue whales can be found year-round off the southern tip of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean, resulting in a high risk of collisions as the usual international shipping lanes pass right through the area where most of the whales congregate, the IFAW said in a statement praising MSC's rerouting.

"By ensuring these small changes, MSC is making a significant difference for these endangered whales. Whales often die as a result of collisions and this population is at risk. Ship strikes are both a conservation and a welfare problem, and even one whale death is one too many," Sharon Livermore, the director of marine conservation at IFAW, said.

MSC's voluntary rerouting does not impact other shipping carriers, but advocates hope their decision could help lead to permanent changes to the official shipping lane that would impact all vessels. Research conducted on the area's blue whale population found that adjusting the shipping lane would reduce the risk of a ship striking a whale by 95%, according to IFWA.

"Re-routeing is the key hope to turn the tide for blue whales off Sri Lanka. It also demonstrates to the Sri Lankan government that now is the time to take appropriate action and move the shipping lane out of blue whale habitat for all merchant vessels," Nicolas Entrup, the director of International Relations at OceanCare, said.

Blue whales are the largest living animals on earth. They can reach 80 to 100 feet in length and live for 70 to 80 years. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists blue whales as endangered, noting the species was hunting to the brink of extinction by the 1960s, at which time it was given international protections.

While hunting blue whales is prohibited, the species continues to be threatened, primarily due to declines in its primary food source, krill. The decline in krill has been linked to the climate crisis, ocean acidification, and other factors.

MSC became the largest container line in the world earlier this year, with a fleet capable of carrying 4.3 million standard 20-foot containers.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, speaks to press members after inspecting the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant with delegation in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine on September 01, 2022.

  • A nuclear watchdog agency inspected the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine.
  • IAEA chief Rafael Mariano Grossi said the "physical integrity" of the plant was "violated."
  • The inspection of the plant came amid weeks of shelling, causing damage to the facility.

A top UN nuclear watchdog official said the "physical integrity" of southern Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — caught in the center of intense hostilities and fighting — has been "violated."

"It is obvious that the plant and physical integrity of the plant has been violated several times," International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told reporters on Thursday, according to media reports, including The Guardian.

Grossi returned on Thursday from a highly anticipated inspection of the plant, which is occupied by Russian forces and is the largest in Europe.

"There were moments where fire was obvious, heavy machine gun, artillery, mortars, at two or three times — really, very concerning, I would say, for all of us," Grossi said in a video captured by freelance journalist Sergio Olmos.

Grossi and a crew of IAEA inspectors arrived at the plant Thursday afternoon to investigate the facility's safety and security after facing delays caused by heavy shelling in the area. Leading up to the visit, the agency said its mission faced the dangers of increased military activity but said it wouldn't stop them from completing an inspection of the site.

"Of course, there is a lot more to do — my team is staying on," Grossi said in a video message after touring the plant. "Most importantly," he added, the IAEA is "establishing a continued presence" at the facility.

The IAEA's visit comes after weeks of shelling around and at the plant, causing damage to the physical facility, triggering power disconnections, and forcing the plant — which is staffed by Ukrainian civilians — to shut down at times. Kyiv and Moscow have traded blame for various attacks.

Western intelligence has accused Russia of using the plant's protected status as a shield, which has left Ukrainian forces reluctant to attack. Watchdog agencies, including the IAEA, have warned that fighting severely raises the risk of a major accident or nuclear disaster and have pushed for international inspections to assess the plant's stability.

Meanwhile, the European Union has sent millions of anti-radiation tablets to Ukraine so it can protect civilians living near the plant if an accident triggers the release of radiation.

TV Ratings: Magnum P.I. Draws Friday’s Largest Audience, Ties for Demo Win https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/ https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/#respond Sat, 18 Apr 2020 15:49:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/tv-ratings-magnum-p-i-draws-fridays-largest-audience-ties-for-demo-win/

In the latest TV ratings, CBS’ Magnum P.I. this week delivered Friday’s largest audience — 6.9 million total viewers, with leadout Blue Bloods in rerun mode — while landing in a four-way tie for the nightly demo win, holding steady at 0.7.

Opening the Eye’s night, MacGyver (6.4 mil/0.7) was steady week-to-week.

Elsewhere….

NBC | The Blacklist (4.8 mil/0.6) dipped a tenth in the demo.

FOX | Friday Night SmackDown (2.19 mil/0.6) was steady in the demo yet dipped once again in viewers to what I have to feel is one of its smallest Fox audiences thus far.

THE CW | Charmed (650K/0.2) and Dynasty (320K/0.1) both were steady in the demo while dropping a few eyeballs.

ABC | Shark Tank (4.4 mil/0.7) and 20/20 (4.1 mil/0.7) reruns were part of the aforementioned four-way demo tie.

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our daily-ish ratings column do not reflect a show’s overall performance, given the increases in delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms. These Live+Same Day numbers instead are used to illustrate any trends or high/low superlatives. Happy Fun Ball may stick to certain types of skin.

Scenes from America’s largest auto show

From its start in 1901, the Chicago Auto Show has grown to become the largest auto show in North America. Held every February at the massive McCormick Place Convention Center, the Chicago Auto Show opens for its 111th run today. Typically the scene of vehicle debuts, 2019 was no exception, with Land Rover unveiling the 2020 Range Rover Evoque, Subaru taking the wraps off the newly redesigned Legacy, and Kia introducing the brand-new Telluride SUV for the 2020 season. Not present this year are BMW and Mercedes, which are taking a breather from the auto show circuit for 2019, but just about every other mainstream and luxury automaker is on the scene.

A couple of days before the show opens to the public, the automotive press is invited to wander the vast (around a million square feet) exhibition space to get up close and personal with the vehicles on the display. If you can’t make it to the Chicago Auto Show, here’s some of what you’ll be missing.

The SUVs and crossovers

I primarily review SUVs and crossovers because our Automotive Editor Jonathan Gitlin hates anything with a center of gravity above ankle height. Luckily, there were some SUVs that caught my eye at the show.

Escaping Occupied Kuwait: History's Largest Air Evacuation https://briefnews.eu/escaping-occupied-kuwait-historys-largest-air-evacuation/ https://briefnews.eu/escaping-occupied-kuwait-historys-largest-air-evacuation/#respond Wed, 05 Dec 2018 16:31:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/escaping-occupied-kuwait-historys-largest-air-evacuation/

Eight-year-old Viju Cherian went to sleep in Kuwait City on Aug. 1, 1990, excited about a friend’s birthday party the next day. By the time he woke up the next morning, though, the party had been called off. Kuwait was under occupation, and the only people celebrating were Iraqi soldiers, young men in olive fatigues who were part of Saddam Hussein’s invading army. U.S.-led coalition forces would free Kuwait six months later in a show of America’s unmatched military might. Before that, however, Cherian would play a part in another unparalleled feat: the largest air evacuation in history.

Cherian and his family were among more than 176,000 Indian nationals trapped in Kuwait at the time of the invasion. The Kuwaiti royal family and government were in exile. The U.N., through Security Council resolutions, had barred all commercial trade and connectivity with Iraq and Kuwait, so escape appeared impossible. In parking lots throughout Kuwait City, Saddam’s soldiers were breaking into and stealing cars. “The Toyota Corolla was their favorite,” Cherian recalls.

With war clouds gathering, a wobbly Indian government cobbled together by multiple parties somehow managed to turn Kuwait into ground zero for what the Guinness World Records heralds as the biggest human airlift of all time. It was a diplomatic coup: pleading with Iraq while absorbing caustic reactions from Kuwait’s exiled government, not to mention the embarrassment of images showing India’s foreign minister in Baghdad embracing Saddam to persuade him to agree to the evacuation.

This gave us the confidence to do such evacuations again.

Kalarickal Pranchu Fabian, former Indian diplomat

In the end, though, India successfully transported its citizens from Kuwait to Amman, Jordan, cutting through Iraq, and flew them home to safety before war broke out. It was a two-month-long operation that would become a template for smaller but no less dangerous Indian rescue missions, from an Islamic State–controlled Iraq, civil war–torn Libya and a chaotic Yemen.

“This gave us the confidence to do such evacuations again,” says Kalarickal Pranchu Fabian, the now retired Indian diplomat who coordinated the 1990 rescue mission.

Like Cherian, Fabian vividly remembers the moment he learned that Iraq had invaded Kuwait. Early in the morning of Aug. 2, he received a call from friends in Kuwait who worked for an international agency saying they’d seen Iraqi vehicles rolling into Kuwait’s capital. The same day Kuwait’s ruler, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, fled to Saudi Arabia with senior members of his government.

Most countries responded as one — with vehement condemnation — but India was in a quandary. On the one hand, the majority of its Arab friends were staunch critics of the invasion; on the other hand, a sizable Indian population was effectively being held hostage. Chinmaya Gharekhan, India’s permanent representative to the U.N., advocated joining the rest of the world to “condemn” the invasion, but the government pointedly chose the softer “deplore” to describe its reaction. “Our main concern was the safety of our people, and whether it was possible to get Iraq out of Kuwait through negotiations,” says Fabian, who would later serve as ambassador in Qatar and Italy.

But Kuwait had other priorities. When India’s then foreign minister, Inder Kumar Gujral, visited New York for the U.N. General Assembly in September, he told Kuwait’s exiled foreign minister, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed, that “we are 110 percent with Kuwait,” recalls Gharekhan. Sheikh Sabah responded curtly: “Excellency, 100 percent would do … we only want the great nation of India to condemn.”

But by then, India was profiting from its approach toward Saddam. On Aug. 20, Gujral had flown to Baghdad, where he met Iraq’s foreign minister, Tariq Aziz, and, two days later, Saddam. The Iraqi leader wore his “traditional khaki uniform with a gun in his holster,” Gujral recalls in his autobiography, Matters of Discretion. “He hugged me when I went to greet him.” That image, broadcast internationally, instantly put India on the defensive with other partners, but Fabian argues that Gujral didn’t have much choice. “When your host wants to embrace you,” he insists, “you can’t avoid it.”

Either way, Saddam agreed to the evacuation — except that U.N. sanctions made it impossible for India to send planes into Kuwait or Iraq. The 176,000 evacuees would have to cross two borders before reaching an aircraft.

Locking the door to their Kuwait City apartment behind them, the Cherian family joined the flood of fellow Indians streaming onto buses that headed first to a border city, and then into Iraq. After passing through multiple checkpoints, Cherian says they reached Baghdad for an overnight halt. The buses then brought them to a desert camp where they spent another night. The next day, they were driven to a patch of “no-man’s-land” between Iraq and Jordan, where they stayed at U.N. refugee camps, before they were finally transported into Jordan and straight to Amman airport. Cherian describes the night at the airport as the “most chaotic” of the entire ordeal — he and his family had to cross a 4,000-kilometer “air bridge” to safety that Air India had built. Over 63 days, the national airline dispatched 488 evacuation flights from Amman to Mumbai, free of cost to passengers, plucking out the trapped citizens.

By Oct. 20, the operation was complete — and the next month the Indian government collapsed. But the airlift birthed a legacy that survives in Kuwait today. When the Gulf War ended, thousands of Indians returned to Kuwait, including Cherian’s parents. Many went back because their livelihoods depended on it. But for some, there was also a sense that Indian diplomacy had their back, says Cherian. Today, 800,000 Indians make up 20 percent of Kuwait’s population. They are Kuwait’s largest expatriate group. And they’re not going anywhere.

Largest dog slaughterhouse in South Korea closes to become public park https://briefnews.eu/largest-dog-slaughterhouse-in-south-korea-closes-to-become-public-park/ https://briefnews.eu/largest-dog-slaughterhouse-in-south-korea-closes-to-become-public-park/#respond Fri, 23 Nov 2018 17:23:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/largest-dog-slaughterhouse-in-south-korea-closes-to-become-public-park/ Officials will clear out South Korea’s largest dog slaughterhouse over the next two days. The canine house of horrors has been shut following pressure from animal rights groups and a decline in the consumption of dog meat.

The slaughterhouse, south of the capital Seoul, will be dismantled to make room for a public park.

Korean Animal Rights Advocates (KARA) called the closure of the Taepyeong-dong complex in Seongnam city a “historic moment.”

“It will open the door for more closures of dog meat slaughterhouses across the country, expediting the decline of the overall dog meat industry,” they added.

The Humane Society International (HSI) visited the slaughterhouse, describing conditions they found inside as “horrifying.” HSI reported seeing electrocution devices used to kill the dogs, a de-hairing machine, knives, and a pile of dead dogs that had been abandoned on the floor. No legislation is currently in place to protect animal rights in relation to treatment or slaughter in South Korea.

According to KARA, approximately 780,000 to 1 million dogs are consumed per year in South Korea, a delicacy that has experienced a steep decline in popularity, particularly among South Korea’s younger generations.

Dogs bred for slaughter range in size and type. In 2015, The Korea Observer reported that many different types of dog were being bred for human consumption, such as popular family pet breeds like Labradors, retrievers, and cocker spaniels. The Observer also reported that many dogs slaughtered often include former pets.

Weeks after President Donald Trump ordered nearly 6,000 troops to the US-Mexico border, the largest active-duty mobilization to the border during his presidency, some of those troops will start heading home.

The expected end date for the operation is December 15, but some troops that are either not needed or have completed their mission could leave before that date, according to Politico. All troops should be back to their home stations well before Christmas, Army Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan told Politico.
