She yearns to make a record, to prove to the world that she can accomplish this incredible feat. And after 10 straight hours of rowing on a foggy day in October, Ditton is just eight kilometers from her goal. She pushes on until she can row no more, and throws her sea anchor out to catch a wink of sleep. “I had rocks to my left and rocks to my right,” she says. “I was in the middle of two of the Farallon Islands. I wasn’t just near the Devil’s Teeth … I was in the mouth.”

Ditton settles down to sleep, jostled gently by the rolling gray waves. The smell of bird poop and salt is inescapable; acrid in her nose. Tomorrow, she’ll do it all again, surging on relentlessly, like the sea.

Growing up, Ditton never dreamed of becoming an ocean rower, or even a sailor. In fact, every summer, her parents forced her and her brother to spend months on their six-meter sailboat. They’d shove off from Britain and sail all the way to Italy on a boat two feet smaller than Ditton’s current rowboat.

“By 14, I swore I’d never set foot in another sailboat again,” says Ditton. She became a long-distance swimmer during those summer months so she could get away from the boat and onto land. “I became a navigator so we could get to our destination faster. I could swim, row and navigate by the age of eight, so I could find out ways to get off the boat.”

Radio-controlled full-size automobiles are nothing new—just ask J.J. Lynch—but as far as we know, nobody’s yet done an R/C track day using a full-size R35 Nissan GT-R. Until now, that is. Nissan GT Academy winner and Super GT racer Jann Mardenborough has lapped Silverstone’s National Circuit using a PlayStation controller to command Godzilla’s every move.

The car was outfitted with a suite of servos to control throttle, brake, steering, and shifting, while Mardenborough’s control interface was a bone-stock Sony DualShock 4 controller. Translating the controller’s signals to the servos was a custom-programmed microcomputer. Button-mashing becomes real-world motion! Perched on high in a helicopter above the track, Mardenborough monitored speed courtesy of a display connected wirelessly to a Racelogic VBOX mounted in the car. For safety’s sake, two additional operators were stationed on the course, both with the ability to apply full ABS braking and cut the engine should the situation warrant it.

The result? Mardenborough’s quickest trip around the circuit was 1:17:47, which means he was averaging 76 mph. Vmax during the run was 131 mph, which is a fair bit faster than our old Tamiya Fox would go. The stunt was set up to celebrate the release of Gran Turismo Sport, as well as to fete 20 years of Nissan’s involvement with the storied series of game. GT Sport will see its American release for PlayStation 4 on October 17th.

Over the past few months, Cassini took the closest pictures of Saturn’s rings we’ve ever seen that it was pretty easy to forget that the probe was nearing its end. It actually dove in and out of the rings to prepare for its poetic death, and now it’s down to its last orbits around the planet. On August 14th, 12:22 AM Eastern, Cassini will begin its final five passes over Saturn, going as close as 1,010 to 1,060 miles above the planet’s clouds to observe its auroras and finer features not visible from a higher altitude.

While that’s still far away from the planet’s surface, NASA expects the atmosphere there to be dense enough to require the use of the probe’s mini-rocket thrusters. Cassini’s ground team believe they can last the whole five passes, since they have experience navigating that kind of atmosphere from the probe’s close flybys of Titan. In case the atmosphere turns out denser than they expect, though, they’ll raise the probe’s altitude a bit to be safe.

During its final pass on September 11th, the probe will go near enough Titan for the moon’s gravity to slow down its orbit, bending its path and marking the beginning of its final days. Despite everything Cassini has done to enrich our knowledge of the second largest planet in our solar system, it’s running low on the rocket fuel used to adjust its course. Sending it plunging into Saturn on September 15th while all its instruments are working is better than leaving it in the vicinity to potentially complicate future missions. That means we can expect more images and data from the probe in the future — even after it’s done breaking up like a meteor on the planet’s surface.

Sato, of Andretti Autosport, beat Brazilian runner-up Helio Castroneves, with Britain’s Ed Jones finishing third.

Castroneves was chasing his fourth Indy 500, a feat that he would have been just the fourth man ever to achieve.

He overtook British former F1 driver for the lead with five laps to go in a move that looked to be decisive.

However, Sato followed him through and got past with less than two laps to go.

Castroneves had just one more chance to overtake and claim that victory again but the Japanese racer was aggressive in his defence and clung on for a famous victory.

Sato said: “Unbelievable feeling. It was a tough tough race. Hopefully the crowd enjoyed it. I can’t thank enough for everyone’s support.”

 

Much of the pre-race focus had been on Formula One driver Fernando Alonso – who had swapped the Monaco Grand Prix for Indy 500.

But his efforts came to and end in the final stages as he suffered engine failure.

“I felt the noise and the engine friction so I backed off,” he said.

“It’s a shame because I felt we deserved to finish and experience the last lap – who knows where we could have finished.

“The whole thing has been a nice experience. The racing was fun and I am glad to been here with the best racers in the business.

“It’s early (to decide if he comes back) but I feel competitive and if I come back I will feel like I know what to expect so will use that next time.

“Thanks to Indycar because this has been one of the best experiences of my career.”

Helio Castroneves, who finished second added: “My little girl congratulating me is what makes me smile. I want to thank the fans. You guys saw, it was a little too hard for me today. Congrats to Takuma Sato – he bumped me a couple of times, I was like “Wow this car is really unbreakable!”

“I really tried hard! I think I bent the throttle pedal, I was pushing that hard!

“When I saw the 77 car bounce back, I thought something was going to happen. When I saw the car flipping, I don’t know how I held on, I think it was the guy upstairs holding on for me.

“I want to thank my entire team. We fight together but it wasn’t my day.”

FERNANDO Alonso is in the thick of the battle for the lead in his maiden Indianapolis 500.

The two-time Formula 1 world champion moved steadily forward in the opening stint, taking the lead soon after the first round of pit stops and remains in the thick of the fight at the halfway point.

Will Power briefly led the race but is on a different strategy to the leaders, while a horror crash took out polesitter Scott Dixon and forced the race to be stopped for 20 minutes while debris fencing was repaired.
