The 13th series of Britain’s Got Talent came to a close on Saturday night, with Ant and Dec‘s golden buzzer act Jon Courtenay being crowned the winner. The singer and pianist walked away with the whopping £250,000 price money and a place on the Royal Variety Show, but some believed the title should have gone to another finalist instead.

Following the final episode, the ITV show released the voting figures and it seems they speak for themselves as Jon received 35.7 percent of the public vote.

He became the first golden buzzer act to win the show.

Runners up Sign Along With Us, a choir who used sign language, came in second with 15.33%, and entertainer Steve Royle was close behind with 14.1 percent.

Comedian Nabil Abdulrashid also wasn’t far off, with 13.9 percent of the vote for his controversial routine that went down a hit with many.

As always, there was a divided opinion on who takes home the crown and this year was no different.

Some believed Sign Along With Us should have come first, with people taking to Twitter to share their views.

One wrote: “Jon Courtenay winning over Sign Along With Us. This has to be a joke. Talent didn’t win tonight #BGTFinal #BGT.”

“Wanted Sign Along With Us to win but he was good too, they all were!” another said.

Someone else raged: “I’m sorry but Jon Courtenay winning over Sign Along With Us is a tragedy. That money would have gone to all those BEAUTIFUL children & done SO much more than Jon who’s destined for holiday camps. I’m actually really upset about this… Terrible #BGT.”

A fourth added: “Abso gutted for sign along with us #BGT.”(sic)

Others believed that Nabil Abdulrashid deserved to have been in the top three.

His routine focused on poking fun at racists after the show received over 20,000 complaints for Diversity’s semi-final performance that incorporated elements of the Black Lives Matter movement.

While there were those who didn’t support his choice of comedy, thousands of fans commended him for using his platform to speak out.

DON’T MISS…

“How on EARTH did Nabil Abdulrashid not get in the top 3!!!!!! I’m so mad, by far the best act of the night #BGT,” one wrote.

“Nabil was robbed #bgtfinal,” said a second.

A third explained: “So many people complaining about Nabil’s set and saying it was offensive…yes he used comedy to highlight real issues and if that made you feel uncomfortable/horrified/offended, then the problem is with you and not with his act! #bgtfinal #BGT #BGT2020.”

Nabil himself took to social media to thank his fans for the support, saying: “Thanks for all the support guys.

  • Six more bodies have been recovered from beneath tons of mud after a landslide devastated a village on Indonesia’s main island of Java, bringing the death toll to 15.
  • Following recent torrential rains, the landslide struck just before dark on Monday, crashing down the surrounding hillside and burying more than 30 houses in Sirnaresmi village in West Java.
  • Soldiers, police and residents have fanned out in the ongoing search for victims, Associated Press reports.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Rescuers recovered six more bodies buried under tons of mud from a landslide that crashed onto a hilly village on Indonesia’s main island of Java, bringing the death toll to 15, officials said Tuesday.

The landslide that plunged down surrounding hills just before sunset Monday buried 30 houses in Sirnaresmi village in West Java’s Sukabumi district. Sixty people who lost their homes were forced to move to a temporary shelter, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Rocky road: Motorist’s miraculous escape from shocking landslide (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/rocky-road-motorists-miraculous-escape-from-shocking-landslide-video/ https://briefnews.eu/rocky-road-motorists-miraculous-escape-from-shocking-landslide-video/#respond Sun, 24 Jun 2018 15:16:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rocky-road-motorists-miraculous-escape-from-shocking-landslide-video/

A New Zealand motorist had a remarkably lucky escape after he narrowly avoided being crushed by a powerful landslide – and still managed to film the dramatic brush with death.

The rock-laden slip came barrelling down the Waioeka Gorge in the Bay of Plenty on the country’s North Island, just meters away from the plucky camerman’s vehicle.

Michael Tabudravu was driving his car through the gorge when a deluge of rocks and debris came tumbling down on the road in front of him.

Tabudravu can be heard voicing his amazement as the mass of rocks continue to gush down the hill before his eyes, blocking off the road ahead.

The landslide forced New Zealand’s Transport Agency to close the gorge overnight. It described the incident as “significant” and asked motorists to use an alternative route, adding that a full assessment would be carried out Monday morning.

Jon Gruden’s contract with the Raiders is expected to be the richest ever for a coach ‘by a landslide’ https://briefnews.eu/jon-grudens-contract-with-the-raiders-is-expected-to-be-the-richest-ever-for-a-coach-by-a-landslide/ https://briefnews.eu/jon-grudens-contract-with-the-raiders-is-expected-to-be-the-richest-ever-for-a-coach-by-a-landslide/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2018 02:01:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jon-grudens-contract-with-the-raiders-is-expected-to-be-the-richest-ever-for-a-coach-by-a-landslide/ Jon GrudenMark Duncan/AP

  • Jon Gruden is expected to return to the NFL as the next head coach of the Oakland Raiders.
  • Adam Schefter told Dan Patrick that the deal is expected to be “lengthy,” and the “richest deal” of any coach in the league.
  • Schefter also doubts that Gruden will get an ownership stake in the team as previously speculated.

Jon Gruden’s return to coaching with the Oakland Raiders now feels like the NFL’s worst-kept secret and that reunion is going to be a lucrative one for the Super Bowl-winning coach.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter was a guest on “The Dan Patrick Show,” when he was asked about an earlier report that speculated Gruden would receive an ownership stake in the team as part of his contract. Schefter downplayed that possibility, but did say that the deal would be the biggest for any coach.

“When it comes in, I will just say that the total value of the deal will be the richest deal that any coach has, by a landslide,” Schefter told Dan Patrick. “I don’t know that the ownership stake thing is going to come through. That had been discussed 2-3 years ago. My sense is it is not going to happen. That’s my sense. But I do think it is going to be a lengthy contract, very lucrative, and look, I think they just made it such that he couldn’t say no.”

The value of contracts for head coaches are not as widely known as those for the players. Bill Belichick is believed to be among the highest-paid coaches in the NFL with a salary in the $ 7-9 million range.

If the Raiders did offer Gruden an ownership stake, there would be a huge catch — it must be approved by other NFL owners, and there is a good reason to think they would be reluctant to do so. In an earlier report by Schefter and Chris Mortensen for ESPN, one ownership source said that the owners “might not be so quick to approve the deal” because they wouldn’t want to set a precedent.

Mark DavisThearon W. Henderson/GettyWhile no official announcement has been made regarding Gruden and the Raiders’ now-vacant coaching position, all signs point to that being all but a formality.

On Sunday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Gruden will be the next coach of the Raiders, a proclamation he presumably would not make without some reassurance of its accuracy from fellow ESPNer Gruden.

“It’s simple, you don’t make that move with Jack Del Rio unless you know you can get Jon Gruden,” Schefter said on ESPN. “Jon Gruden is going to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders. The only question is when it happens.”

In addition, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Gruden is expected to accept the Raiders’ offer, but that he is slow-playing any announcement in an effort to comply with the NFL’s “Rooney Rule” requiring teams to interview minority candidates. Rapoport added that Gruden has already picked a defensive coordinator.

“The Raiders are confident Jon Gruden will say yes eventually, though he is being careful about doing so before they comply with the Rooney Rule and he is still on the books to broadcast a game Saturday for ESPN,” Rapoport wrote on Twitter. “Gruden is already planning to call plays, hire DC Paul Guenther.”

Priebus reportedly told Trump he would ‘lose by the biggest landslide in American political history’ after the ‘Access Hollywood’ tape https://briefnews.eu/priebus-reportedly-told-trump-he-would-lose-by-the-biggest-landslide-in-american-political-history-after-the-access-hollywood-tape/ https://briefnews.eu/priebus-reportedly-told-trump-he-would-lose-by-the-biggest-landslide-in-american-political-history-after-the-access-hollywood-tape/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 14:50:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/priebus-reportedly-told-trump-he-would-lose-by-the-biggest-landslide-in-american-political-history-after-the-access-hollywood-tape/ Steve BannonScreenshot/CBS

Steve Bannon, President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist, told CBS News’ Charlie Rose that former White House chief of staff Reince Priebus advised Trump after the release of the bombshell “Access Hollywood” tape that he could either drop out of the race or face the worst electoral defeat in US history.

Trump’s campaign was rocked by the release of the 2005 tape, in which Trump describes groping women in lewd detail to “Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush. Many prominent Republicans swiftly condemned the remarks and distanced themselves from Trump.

Bannon described to CBS the conversation that took place during a Trump Tower meeting following The Washington Post’s release of the tape.

“Trump went around the room and asked people the percentages he thought of — of still winning and what the recommendation,” Bannon said. “And Reince started off and Reince said, ‘You have — you have two choices. You either drop out right now, or you lose by the biggest landslide in American political history.’ And Trump, with his humor goes, ‘That’s a great way … to start our conversation.”

“We went around the room,” he continued. “And you could tell — I could tell from the incoming of politicians and I could tell from some of the politicians that were there, is that the natural inclination of politicians are to be so overwhelmingly stunned and shocked by how the media comes on you. But Trump wasn’t that. And I told him as he went around, I was the last guy to speak, and I said, ‘It’s 100%. You have 100% probability of winning.'”

It was previously reported that Priebus urged Trump to drop out of the race that October night. Vanity Fair reported that Priebus told Trump that if he didn’t drop out, he would “go down with a worse election loss than Barry Goldwater’s.” Goldwater, a Republican senator from Arizona, was trounced by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

As The New York Times wrote in July, Trump “would never forget the exchange” with Priebus.

Priebus, then the Republican National Committee chairman, released a response to the tape shortly after it was published, saying, “No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.”

Bannon said that conversation was the “first time and only time” Trump “ever got upset with me,” seeming to doubt Bannon’s assertion that the then-Republican presidential nominee should double-down and that he had a “100%” chance of winning.

“He goes, “Come on, it’s not 100%,'” Bannon said in his retelling of the discussion. “I go, ‘It’s absolutely 100%.” And I told him why. ‘They don’t care.'”

Rose took issue with the end of Bannon’s comment, saying voters “do care about respect for women” and it was not “just locker room talk,” as Trump said in his initial statement following the tape’s release. Bannon said “they do” have respect for women, but added “that’s locker room talk.”

“The Billy Bush thing is locker room talk,” he said.

Bannon, who is back to running the right-wing website Breitbart News after leaving the White House, said the “Access Hollywood” tape ordeal was a “litmus test,” adding that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s response to it cost him a cabinet position.

“I told him, ‘The plane leaves at 11 o’clock in the morning,” Bannon said. “‘If you’re on the plane, you’re on the team.’ Didn’t make the plane.”

Later that October night, Trump released an on-camera apology for his comments, but quickly pivoted to attacking his opponent, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump raised former President Bill Clinton’s past sex scandals, saying, “I’ve said some foolish things, but there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women and Hillary has bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims.”

He closed with, “We will discuss this more in the coming days. See you at the debate on Sunday.”

Massive search efforts are underway in China’s Sichuan Province after a landslide destroyed dozens of houses, reportedly burying at least 100 people underneath the rubble.

Torrential rain in Maoxian County triggered the large landslide which destroyed around 40 households in Xinmo Village, Xinhua reports. Around 100 people are feared trapped underneath the dirt and debris.

The disaster happened in the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and struck at around 6:00am local time.

Some 500 people are now part of the search and rescue efforts after authorities mobilized manpower and deployed resources, including excavation equipment, to save the trapped villagers.

The landslide has also blocked about a two-kilometer section of a local river course.

If you’ve planned a scenic coastal drive along California’s beautiful Highway 1 in the near future, you’ll have to find a detour past the Mud Creek portion that’s been covered 40 feet deep by a massive landslide over the weekend. Sure, slides and road closures are a normal part of life, especially during winter, along the Pacific coast. As you’ll see from this aerial video taken by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, this one is of a particularly impressive scale.

According to the LA Times, the hillside gave way on Saturday night, burying a third of a mile of Highway 1. The slide was large enough, and extended far enough into the ocean, that it actually changed the coastline, which is visible in the video. Officials will figure out a plan to strengthen the remaining hillside and rebuild the road once the danger of further slides has passed.

This rainy winter was particularly taxing for the area, with other landslides causing problems for tourists seeking the natural scenery. Some resorts closed, while others began using helicopters to bring in guests and supplies. Despite being over, the previous winter weather is still having an effect, as this latest slide shows.

Thankfully, this section of the road had already been closed from an earlier slide, and work crews had left the area due to the unstable soil. “Now it’s covering 10 times as much,” says California Department of Transportation spokesperson Colin Jones.

It may be some time before you can drive this scenic part of Highway 1 again, but somehow, even buried under yards of dirt and rock, it’s still beautiful.

A garbage dump collapse killed at least 16 people in Sri Lanka, while hundreds lost their homes, Reuters reports, citing local military and healthcare officials.

The devastating garbage dump landslide in a suburb of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, occurred late on Friday, amid traditional local new year’s celebrations. The landfill reportedly caught fire and pile of trash estimated at 91 meters (300 feet) tall, promptly collapsed, damaging over 140 houses, according to local police.

More than 100 houses were buried under the trash, Reuters reported, citing eyewitnesses. The officials did not comment on the number of people reportedly missing, however.

The bodies of 16 landslide victims have been uncovered so far, army spokesman Roshan Senivirathna told Reuters. At least four victims were teenagers, according to a nurse at Colombo’s main hospital.

Search and rescue operations continued into their second day on Saturday, with servicemen using heavy equipment to dig the damaged houses out from under the garbage.

“We heard a massive sound. It was like thunder. Tiles in our house got cracked. Black water started coming in,” one survivor said, adding “we tried to get out but we were trapped inside. We shouted for help and were rescued later.”

A similar incident occurred earlier this year in Ethiopia, when a massive rubbish dump near the country’s capital, Addis Ababa, collapsed, burying neighboring makeshift homes. The devastating landslide killed over 100 shantytown dwellers and waste pickers. The colossal dump had been serving Euphoria’s capital for over half a century before it collapsed under its own weight.
