Before Thursday’s Legacies, I would have argued that Hope had the franchise’s most twisted family history, but the more we learn about Landon’s lineage, the more the Mikaelsons start to look like the Bradys.

As revealed by Agent Clark this week, Landon’s father was once a golem known as the “Eater of the Dark.” He was created 1,000 years ago by the “unholy alliance” of a witch, a vampire and a werewolf in order to combat their shared enemy: a dragon. Unfortunately, Papa Landon proved too effective, consuming every monster he could find. He also attempted to create offspring of his own, including a handsome mud baby whom we know as… Agent Clark. (Gasp! Landon has a brother!)

Unfortunately, Landon’s big bro was not the perfect creation their father had hoped for, so he cast him aside like the handsome trash he was. In retaliation, Clark told some nearby humans about his father’s unnatural desire to create a new species. The humans recruited a coven of witches to bind Landon’s father using three magical locks, then returned him to his true form: an endless dark pit by the name of… Malivore. (Double gasp! Malivore is Landon’s father!)

Over time, the secret society guarding Malivore evolved into a monster clean-up business known as Triad Industries. But power inevitably corrupted the once-noble institution, and “monsters” became code for “whoever they didn’t like and wanted to be forgotten.” All this corruption made Clark very sad, so he tossed himself into… his father… and was only released recently in order to find Landon. As Malivore’s only blood relative, Landon alone possesses the ability to return his father to his original form, or risk having Triad convert Malivore into a weapon that could be used against the very species he was created to protect.

Speaking of Triad, this week’s episode ended with the organization’s goons storming the Salvatore School, where Lizzie and Josie had just learned the truth about the merge (at last!) from an extremely emotional and apologetic Alaric. That whole conversation wrecked me, honestly. It was right up there with Jo’s goodbye scene after the twins’ birthday party when they all just sat around sobbing and being a family.

I’m also a little concerned that we already know which twin (*cough* Josie *cough*) would survive a potential merge. And judging by the look on Lizzie’s face when Josie sent her flying across the bedroom, I’d say suspects the same. That said, I was encouraged by Josie’s insistence that the merge is a “curse” on the Gemini twins. Curses can be broken… right?

Also worth discussing…

* Hope finally dropped the L-bomb on Landon — well, “Landon” — during a lakeside chat with a magical hologram version of her kidnapped boyfriend.

* We also need to talk about Raphael and Hope. I’m glad they’re finally able to talk about their complicated feelings for one another, but I’m not sure they’ve actually resolved anything. All of their conversations still feel super flirty, even when they’re about his mental health and loss of control. Why do I feel like this won’t end well?

* I’ve been wondering about Emma’s future at the Salvatore School ever since Karen David was promoted to a series regular on Fear the Walking Dead, and I finally got my answer this week: She’s taking a sabbatical, but first, she convinced Alaric to reach out to Dorian for help.

* I appreciated Roman telling Hope that she’s not a mistake and that the cosmos is lucky to have her, but also… what? It hasn’t been that long since the final season of The Originals, right? I guess I should commend Hope for being so chill around the guy who helped orchestrate her mother’s murder, but Roman’s little redemption story feels unnecessary.

Were you surprised by the reveal of Malivore as Landon’s father? What are your hopes for next week’s finale? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.

Legacies Recap: There's Something Fishy About Landon's Dark Backstory https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-theres-something-fishy-about-landons-dark-backstory/ https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-theres-something-fishy-about-landons-dark-backstory/#respond Fri, 25 Jan 2019 08:48:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-theres-something-fishy-about-landons-dark-backstory/ On paper, Legacies‘ Seylah seems like the perfect mom: She’s a great listener, she makes a mean sandwich and she’s always down for a little ironing. That said, she loses points for using all those things in an overall plot to murder her own son.

To be fair, Landon’s mother eventually came around in Thursday’s midseason premiere, though it took some convincing for her to accept him as her offspring. In fact, it wasn’t until Alaric and Hope tracked them down in a seedy motel room that she finally opened up about her dark past.

Here’s the gist: After serving in the military, Seylah landed a gig with an intelligence organization responsible for keeping the supernatural world a secret. When a creature threatened to expose that world to outsiders, she would track it down and bring it to headquarters. Think Men in Black, complete with Seylah having her memory wiped after each mission. When she discovered that the reason she forgot the creatures was because the organization was sending them to Malivore, she was tossed into the pit as well, only for her to suddenly reappear two years later… inexplicably pregnant!

Naturally, Seylah took off immediately after telling all of this to Alaric, leaving the gang with a heck of a mess to clean up. Not only did Landon apparently steal the second Malivore key from Seylah’s house — which, like the knife, he doesn’t remember taking — but a freaky fish creature (quite possibly a “very pissed merman”) climbed out of the bathtub and tried to kill everybody.

Legacies RecapHope had the brilliant idea of putting her Landon tracker in the key/urn, handing it over to the creature, then letting it take them straight to Malivore, where she believed Seylah was going. The fish monster led them to a complex owned by Triad Industries, though it only made it halfway across the lawn before being blown to little fishy bits. Meanwhile, Seylah strong-armed her way into the facility, where she sacrificed herself by diving into Malivore and erasing her existence from the world.

Well, from most of the world, anyway. For some reason, Hope remembered everything that transpired over the past few days. And while she’s willing to keep it from Landon until he’s ready for the truth, she had to tell Alaric everything — including that the urn has been brought back to the Salvatore School, and (uh-oh!) it’s starting to glow.

Also worth discussing this week…

* If you weren’t already sold on Hope and Landon as a couple, I have to imagine you’re ‘shipping them to the fullest after this week’s episode. They’re easily the two most damaged and emotionally guarded characters on the show, so when they open up to one another and get honest about their feelings… ugh, it’s just the best. They can also be very cute when they want to be, like when Hope asked him to be her boyfriend at the end of the hour.

* OK, so the guy who posed as one of the fake gas company employees is a high-up (if not the highest-up) at Triad Industries. But what’s his deal? And what’s his name? And is he Landon’s father? (I might have gone too far with that last question.)

* I couldn’t help but laugh when Hope told Landon, “My first kiss was with a 90-year-old vampire who helped murder my mother.” #JusticeForHayley

Legacies Recap: Who Got Stoned? Plus, Danielle Rose Russell Breaks Down Hope and Landon's 'Charged' Reunion https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-who-got-stoned-plus-danielle-rose-russell-breaks-down-hope-and-landons-charged-reunion/ https://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-who-got-stoned-plus-danielle-rose-russell-breaks-down-hope-and-landons-charged-reunion/#respond Fri, 09 Nov 2018 11:33:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legacies-recap-who-got-stoned-plus-danielle-rose-russell-breaks-down-hope-and-landons-charged-reunion/ Just when you thought Riverdale had cornered market on gargoyles, along came Thursday’s Legacies to remind Archie & Co. what a real monster looks like.

After waking from a who-knows-how-long slumber in the final moments of last week’s episode, the Salvatore Boarding School’s resident gargoyle wasted no time terrorizing the student body — specifically Lizzie’s body, which began turning to stone after she was attacked by the walking lawn ornament. (Maybe that will teach her to listen to Pedro!) After surviving an encounter of his own, Alaric discovered that the gargoyle was only attacking other supernatural creatures, those it perceived as threats. This little revelation bought Hope and Josie enough time to combine their powers and blow the damn thing to bits.

And in the students’ defense, their day had already been crazy dramatic. As punishment for brawling with the townies after last week’s “friendly” game of touch football, everyone was sentenced to an afternoon of community service in downtown Mystic Falls. MG hooked up with Dana, someone dumped a milkshake on Lizzie, Hope impaled herself in the damn foot… it was a lot.

Legacies RecapMeanwhile, Rafael and Landon Kirby were beginning to wonder if they’re really cut out for life in the forest, as not everyone can stomach the Stefan Salvatore Woodland Creature Diet™. And Rafael’s little get-rich-quick scheme, performing supernatural tricks on the street for money, earned the attention of none other than Jeremy Gilbert, who ended up saving the duo from an actual werewolf hunter. With a fresh perspective, Rafael and L.K. made their triumphant return to school, where the latter immediately shared an intense moment with his old flame.

“When they see each other at the school at the end of this episode, that was one of my favorite moments we’ve done so far,” Danielle Rose Russell tells TVLine. “I love how charged that moment is between them, and that Hope breaks away. You see a visual representation of what their relationship is like.” And that relationship isn’t going to get any easier anytime soon. “They go through a journey,” Russell says. “We’re shooting Episode 10 now, and they’re still going on a journey.”

As for Hope’s relationship with Josie, which appeared hopeful this week as the two swapped stories about boys and black magic, Russell says there’s more bonding to come. “They complement each other in such nice ways,” she says, “so I think that friendship could be great for both of them. They need each other, and you’ll see that develop a bit more. Of course, Lizzie hates it — she hates every moment of it. It’ll be up and down for a while, but this episode gave you a taste of what could be.”

And if the sight of a gargoyle walking the hall of the Salvatore Boarding School was too much to handle, just you wait. “We have so many more amazing monsters,” Russell says. “And the monsters start to make a little more sense. They fall into place, and you learn why they’re appearing. It seems crazy right now, but trust me, it will all makes sense.”

Also worth discussing…

* Something about hearing Hope refer to “my Aunt Freya” just made me so happy. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Riley Voelkel makes an appearance before the end of Season 1 — which was recently upped to 16 episodes — especially considering she’s still in the Plec-verse via her recurring role on Roswell, New Mexico.

* Oh, and when Josie told Hope, “We all used to say how beautiful [Hayley] was,” I just… I couldn’t even handle it.

* I didn’t think I could love MG more, but then he questioned whether he was taking advantage of Dana (“My mama didn’t raise me like that”), and I fell even deeper.

* As much as I’d love for everyone to hold hands and sing “Kum ba yah,” I’m also really entertained by Lizzie’s petty sniping. When Hope offered to pick up trash and Lizzie replied, “Good, it suits you,” I was floored. Savage.

* I don’t exactly disagree with Kaleb’s sentiments about vampires being “faster and stronger” than humans, but I’m a little concerned. The last thing Mystic Falls needs is another species war. (Also, “vamps before tramps”? Really, Kaleb?)

Your thoughts on this week’s Legacies? And which vampire do you think killed Dana? (Whoever it was, I hope they screamed “Not now, Dana!” before they drained her.) Whatever you’re theorizing, drop it in a comment below.
