‘Raqqa was a beautiful city, now it’s completely destroyed’ – Syrians lament cost of US bombing https://briefnews.eu/raqqa-was-a-beautiful-city-now-its-completely-destroyed-syrians-lament-cost-of-us-bombing/ https://briefnews.eu/raqqa-was-a-beautiful-city-now-its-completely-destroyed-syrians-lament-cost-of-us-bombing/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 05:54:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/raqqa-was-a-beautiful-city-now-its-completely-destroyed-syrians-lament-cost-of-us-bombing/ US-led coalition airstrikes on Raqqa, an Islamic State stronghold in Syria, have claimed many civilian lives and forced tens of thousands to flee. RT’s Ruptly agency spoke to the displaced locals who described how the city was leveled in front of their eyes.

The ancient city of Raqqa, which has recently become known as the de-facto capital of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists in Syria, is currently under siege by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led militia backed by the US-led coalition. The besieged city has come under heavy air bombardment while civilians have been trapped in IS-occupied neighborhoods, unable to escape.

The SDF on Wednesday said that “80 percent” of Raqqa has been retaken from IS and that the operation has moved into the final phase. At the same time, some SDF forces were seen being transferred away from the battlefield to the northern areas of the Deir ez-Zor province, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The dislocation comes as the Syrian armed forces backed by Russian Air Force have been pushing out IS terrorists after liftking the siege of the city of Deir ez-Zor.
People in the Al-Mabrookeh refugee camp told Ruptly of the terrors they faced being caught in the middle of the fighting between IS terrorists and the US-backed SDF.

“The coalition launched heavy airstrikes over the residential areas and the nearby towns in the western and northern sectors, especially northward, where they targeted ISIS headquarters, and also locations where civilians were killed,” Ahmad Ibrahim told Ruptly.

“Schools, where students were studying, have been targeted as well. There was nothing there, and they have just been hit and destroyed,” he said.

Entire swathes of the city have been reduced to rubble by the bombing, which the UN estimates kills an average of 27 civilians each day.

“The aircraft was shelling, the aircraft of the coalition. Civilians – children and women – were killed. Raqqa is destroyed. It was a beautiful city, and it is totally destroyed. There is no Raqqa, nothing,” said a woman at the camp.

In some cases, militants tried to use civilians as human shields, purposefully attracting collateral damage on the terrified residents.

“During the ISIS siege, we were stopping our cars in front of the checkpoint, and when a member of ISIS heard the aircraft, he would stop the cars and not allow them to move. This was done so more civilians are killed,” said another refugee.

The coalition does not usually acknowledge mass-casualty civilian incidents, although in rare cases it launches investigations into them. Last week, the US-led coalition admitted to carrying out an airstrike in Deir ez-Zor province, which reportedly killed at least 12 Syrian civilians. The coalition promised to launch a probe into the incident, though it did not mention the casualties.
When reached for comment by RT, the coalition said the airstrike did take place, but targeted a terrorist unit in the area.

The circumstances around the airstrike seem to follow a common pattern indicating a glaring lack of intelligence on part of the US-led coalition, Ammar Waqqaf, the director of the Gnosos think tank, told RT.

“Since the start of the operations in Mosul we, I think, have lost count on how many times the United States wanted to hit an ISIS target and then suddenly there’s a huge massacre taking place,” Waqqaf said.

Earlier this month, the US-led coalition confirmed another 61 “unintentional civilian deaths” caused by its airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, raising the number of civilians it has acknowledged killing since 2014 to at least 685.

The deadliest incident was a March 14 strike near Mosul, Iraq, in which the coalition attacked an Islamic State position where militants were firing at coalition allies and 27 civilians were killed.
The coalition is currently investigating a total of 455 reports of civilian casualties caused by its artillery or airstrikes, the statement said. Between August 1 and 29, it conducted 1,094 airstrikes in and near the city of Raqqa – up from 645 in July.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, said in late August that the battle to regain Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor from Islamic State must not be waged at the expense of the lives of civilians.

“Given the extremely high number of reports of civilian casualties this month and the intensity of the airstrikes on Raqqa, coupled with ISIL’s use of civilians as human shields, I am deeply concerned that civilians – who should be protected at all times – are paying an unacceptable price and that forces involved in battling ISIL are losing sight of the ultimate goal of this battle,” he said.

House of Cards Showrunners Lament Season 5's Huge [Spoiler]: 'It Was Really Painful to Write and Shoot' https://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-showrunners-lament-season-5s-huge-spoiler-it-was-really-painful-to-write-and-shoot/ https://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-showrunners-lament-season-5s-huge-spoiler-it-was-really-painful-to-write-and-shoot/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 17:42:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/house-of-cards-showrunners-lament-season-5s-huge-spoiler-it-was-really-painful-to-write-and-shoot/

Last year, Melissa James Gibson and Frank Pugliese were handed one of TV’s most daunting tasks: Succeed House of Cards creator Beau Willimon at the helm of Netflix’s prestige political drama four seasons and 52 episodes into the series’ run. Well, according to preliminary Season 5 exit polls, the duo — who were promoted to co-showrunners after several seasons of working as EPs under Willimon — are enjoying mostly solid support from critics, some of whom (read: me!) approached these 13 new episodes with a healthy degree of skepticism. The fact that House of Cardsdidn’t crash and burn like Leann Harvey’s ill-fated Mercedes made me much more enthusiastic to hop on the phone with Gibson and Pugliese to break down Season 5’s biggest twists, turns and unanswered questions.

TVLINE | I want to lead with what is arguably the biggest moment of the season: Claire [Robin Wright] murdering Tom [Paul Sparks]. That marked a major shift for the character and the series. Was it a no-brainer in your eyes? Or did you heavily debate whether to have Claire essentially become as evil as Frank [Kevin Spacey]?
MELISSA JAMES GIBSON | It was heavily debated. Part of what we were grappling with is how is Claire really Frank’s equal? On a certain level, she’s not his equal until her hands are as dirty as his. Until she can prove that she’s willing to stop at nothing to get what she wants. Claire’s ambition is a major theme this season, so, of course, it had to be justified. It was actually really painful. It was painful to write and shoot. [Tom] is a beloved character. And I believe that a real depth and love had developed in that relationship. It was the highest price she had to pay.
FRANK PUGLIESE | At some point it would’ve been impossible not to do it. It had to happen, as difficult as it was. So much of the arc of the season is Claire coming to terms with her ambition and embracing it and figuring out how to become different that Francis but also his equal. The world of the show is very corrupting and there’s a price you pay for power. And many times it’s some piece of your humanity. And, in a way, Tom was asking her to be human.
GIBSON | And now she is fully as culpable as Francis. For a while on the show, if anyone was going to go down it was going to be him. Now it’s no longer true. The stakes could not be higher for the two of them.
PUGLIESE | And when Francis learns [what she’s done] it makes him realize that he has someone formidable in front of him, and it happens to be his wife.

TVLINE | Robin Wright is an exec producer on the show as well as a frequent director. Was she on board with it?
GIBSON | She had really strong feelings. She loved the character, she loved working with [Paul]. This was a big, long discussion. But we all landed on the fact that this was the correct and brave path to follow.

TVLINE | A part of me thought the season was going to end with someone opening up a mysterious package containing a copy of Tom’s manuscript on the Underwoods. Tom was a smart guy. It doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility that he would’ve had a plan for his book in the event something happened to him. Is that fair?
PUGLIESE | It’s so fair. I think we’ll see that. In the [finale], the [tour guide] he was involved with begins to ask the question of where is he. I don’t think anyone should get away with anything too easily on this show.
GIBSON | It’s a totally valid question.

TVLINE | One ongoing frustration I have with the show — and this is something I shared with Beau previously — concerns so many of the Underwoods’ biggest enemies getting killed off. For me, so much of the tension of the show is wondering when Frank and now Claire will get caught and be forced to pay for what they’ve done. But that tension is undercut every time a threat is killed off. It feels like it’s a bit of a narrative cheat. I imagine that must be something you struggled with this season.
PUGLIESE | That is definitely something we’ve talked about. One of the things Season 5 is trying to accomplish is [putting forth the notion] that maybe it’s not someone outside of the marriage that’s going to catch either one of them. Maybe it’s someone in the marriage. As much as they need each other, they may turn out to be each others’ biggest opponent.
GIBSON | It should not feel like murder is the magic answer. We agree with you. That’s the dance: To [balance the] pursuit of holding them accountable with keeping them as one-step-ahead as possible, without it being too easy.

TVLINE | I feel like the show is never better than when Claire and Frank are at odds, so it’s encouraging to hear you talk about them being each others’ biggest antagonist.
GIBSON | It’s almost like they get off on it.
PUGLIESE | And it’s how they gain each others’ respect at the same time. There’s something really perverse about that.

TVLINE | Also, she’s the only person that truly scares him.
GIBSON | I agree. And I think one of those moments for him is when he understands that she’s killed Tom. He’s like, “Oh, I thought I knew you… ” We leave them in a different place this season. The juice of the show is the degree to which their destinies are inextricably intwined.

TVLINE | Speaking of neutralized threats, can you confirm that Leann [Neve Campbell] did in fact die in that accident?
PUGLIESE | We don’t need to confirm that. [Laughs] Who knows? Season 6 will tell us.

TVLINE  | We never really learned how badly Catherine Durant was injured from her fall down those stairs…
PUGLIESE | She’s injured enough where she can’t testify, which was [Frank’s] goal. Or she’s injured enough that she realizes if she testified something worse could happen to her. But we’ll find out how bad off she is [in Season 6].

TVLINE | Is the Zoe murder case closed now that Doug [Michael Kelly] has taken the fall for the crime?
PUGLIESE | I don’t think it’s completely closed, because there’s a doubt in Hammerschmidt [Boris McGiver] that I don’t think can go away.

TVLINE | Is Michael/Doug still a part of the show moving forward?
GIBSON | It’s pretty hard to imagine the show without him. If [the series] is a triangle, he’s the third [person].
PUGLIESE | Doug has been haunted by what he’s done [to Rachel], and Frank and Claire take advantage of this and set him up in a way. He still doesn’t know what happened to Leann. He still doesn’t know how the rest of his so-called confession is going to play out. These are all open questions.

Fresh off sweep, Raptors lament what could have been https://briefnews.eu/fresh-off-sweep-raptors-lament-what-could-have-been/ https://briefnews.eu/fresh-off-sweep-raptors-lament-what-could-have-been/#respond Mon, 08 May 2017 12:31:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fresh-off-sweep-raptors-lament-what-could-have-been/ Dressing at his locker-room stall Sunday, Toronto centre Jonas Valanciunas politely asked a scrum of waiting media to clear a space.

Once they moved aside, he fired his towel into the no-longer-hidden hamper.

“Good shot,” said a reporter. “Too late,” said Valanciunas.

He wasn’t the only Raptor to lament Sunday’s sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers after a 109-102 defeat. Or to wish that the grit shown in Game 4 had come earlier.

“Everybody’s upset,” said Norman Powell. “It’s tough, going in the summer knowing you got swept. It’s not a good feeling. You’ve got to use that as motivation to get better, focus on the little things, focus on what you really have do to get better for next year. That’s what’s going to happen.”

Asked if fans had seen the best of the Raptors in the playoffs, Powell said: “No, not at all.”

But he pointed to Sunday’s effort, which saw Toronto lead by as much as 11 in the first and claw its way back in the fourth before the Cavs pulled away for good.

“We fought them hard, we played them tight, we played them tough,” he said. “If we played like that for the four games, we’re talking about a different series. And if we played like that and Kyle [Lowry] was back, we’re talking about a very winnable game.”

‘We came out with a lot of pride’

“We’re trying to play the best basketball but that’s not the best,” he added. “It was a good hard-fought game. We came out with a lot of pride, a lot of grit, a lot of toughness, that never-quit attitude. That was the result of it — a close game. But it’s not the best basketball that we could play.”

Coach Dwane Casey also wondered what might have been.

“It’s tough because we know we’re better, we could have played better in the first two games and we didn’t,” he said.

In the absence of the sidelined Lowry [ankle], Cory Joseph stepped up Sunday with 20 points and 12 assists. It is a measure of LeBron James’ greatness that he scored 35 points despite wearing six-foot-six 245-pound P.J. Tucker for most of the game.

Serge Ibaka sank some big shots en route to his team-leading 23 points. DeMar DeRozan had 22 points and eight assists despite taking an Iman Shumpert knee to the groin in the second quarter.

Tucker, who has battled James since they were nine years old, took little solace in his personal battle with basketball’s biggest star.

“Any time you lose, you don’t feel good,” said Tucker, who exited looking resplendent in a sports jacket over a vintage Iron Maiden T-shirt featuring the 1981 album “Killers.”

But he too liked the fight in the Raptors Sunday.

“I just like our guys didn’t give up. Down 0-3, it’s impossible to win, I guess [according to] the odds. But guys came here, put the hard hat on and went to work. So I commend all my teammates.”

Patrick Patterson, who like Tucker is approaching free agency, said the Raptors “weren’t able to put games together like we wanted to.”

Asked about the Game 4 effort, he said “Better late than never. Yeah we fought tonight. We just didn’t come out with the win.”

Cleveland had Toronto’s number from three-point range, outscoring the Raptors 183-81 from beyond the arc in the series.

And when push came to shove Sunday, with Toronto finally leading at 93-92 with 6:38 remaining, the Raptors could not stop Kyrie Irving from reeling off 11 straight points and James sinking a dagger of a three-pointer then shaking his head at what was suddenly a 106-95 Cleveland lead.

For Valanciunas, coming close Sunday still sucked in a sweep.

“It feels bad, it hurts to lose. Especially it hurts to lose like that,” said the seven-foot Lithuanian who had eight points off the bench. “But we can’t just look back now and feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve got to learn from that.”

The Cavaliers have now ended Toronto’s season two years in a row. There are decisions to be made by the Raptors’ braintrust.

Cleveland swept Detroit and Atlanta last year before dispatching the Raptors in six games in the Eastern Conference final and Golden State in seven in the NBA finals. So far in these playoffs, they have swept Indiana and Toronto.

James was thinking of other numbers, however.

“It’s going to be my ninth time in 14 years,” he said of making the conference final. “I’ll take those numbers.”

Uber’s lament: “No Black or Hispanic employee holds leadership positions in tech” https://briefnews.eu/ubers-lament-no-black-or-hispanic-employee-holds-leadership-positions-in-tech/ https://briefnews.eu/ubers-lament-no-black-or-hispanic-employee-holds-leadership-positions-in-tech/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 07:25:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ubers-lament-no-black-or-hispanic-employee-holds-leadership-positions-in-tech/

For the first time, Uber released diversity figures for its employees—which does not include its thousands of drivers, whom the company considers to be contract workers.

Like many other Silicon Valley companies, Uber’s labor force—in particular its tech staff—is overwhelmingly male and largely white.

According to a series of figures posted Tuesday, the company even called out the fact that its leadership “is more homogenous… no Black or Hispanic employee holds leadership positions in tech.”
