Trailer for Laika

The story of Laika—the first pup launched into space—has been documented everywhere from Ars Technica to Arcade Fire songs. This decidedly tragic tale starts with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev wanting to press his country’s perceived space advantage over the United States after the USSR’s Sputnik had beaten US efforts into the heavens back in October 1957.

“We never thought that you would launch a Sputnik before the Americans,” Khrushchev told famed rocket guru Sergei Korolev, according to cosmonaut Georgy Grechko. “But you did it. Now please launch something new in space for the next anniversary of our revolution.”

That “something” would be a female dog named Laika. And Soviet space leaders had just one month to get this effort together. Picked off Moscow streets and sent into the lab then the skies, Laika’s contribution to space history would be largely symbolic. Her capsule contained a temperature-control system and some dog food, but the Soviets must’ve always viewed this as a one-way, suicide mission—no one had yet solved the problem of how to safely return a spacecraft through Earth’s atmosphere, after all. Within a couple of hours after launch, the thermal control system failed and the capsule overheated. Humanity’s first attempt to send a living creature into space ended, well, not great.

‘Bumblebee’ Featurette: Director Travis Knight Touts the Influence of Spielberg and LAIKA https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-featurette-director-travis-knight-touts-the-influence-of-spielberg-and-laika/ https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-featurette-director-travis-knight-touts-the-influence-of-spielberg-and-laika/#respond Wed, 13 Jun 2018 15:56:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-featurette-director-travis-knight-touts-the-influence-of-spielberg-and-laika/ Bumblebee Featurette

Last week brought the first teaser trailer for the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee. The film focuses on the vocally-challenged, signature yellow Autobot who has been a cornerstone of the entire franchise right alongside Optimus Prime. Now, Bumblebee finds himself on his own in what is something of an origin story for the character as he goes on an adventure that happens decades before the first installment of the Transformers movies.

A new Bumblebee featurette has arrived with a focus on director Travis Knight, the man who has done wonders with stop-motion animation at LAIKA. After directing Kubo and the Two Strings and having his hand in LAIKA’s other projects such as Coraline and ParaNorman, Knight hopes to bring some of that mesmerizing storytelling to the Transformers universe.

Watch the Bumblebee Featurette

In the featurette, Knight says, “At LAIKA, we try to find an artful balance of darkness and light, intensity and warmth, and humor and heart. The idea of being able to bring that philosophy to Bumblebee was really exciting.” Indeed, if there’s one thing that’s been missing from the Transformers franchise in the hands of Michael Bay, it was light, warmth and heart. There may have been humor, but it wasn’t ever particularly great.

Beyond that, Knight also references wanting to make a movie in the same vein of the classic, Steven Spielberg-directed coming-of-age adventures from the 1980s. If the first trailer is any indication, he’s brought some of that flair to Bumblebee, with Hailee Steinfeld doing her best Spielberg face. Still, it’s easy to make a movie look like it has the traits of classic Amblin Entertainment movies, but making it shine the whole way through is another story.

Meanwhile, co-star John Cena is just happy to be along for the ride. It looks like he’s playing a villain in the movie, but for him, it’s still a dream come true since he grew up on Transformers in the same decade in which the movie is set. Hopefully, he’ll get to wear some sweet jorts at some point during this movie.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee arrives in theaters on December 21, 2018.

Canine cosmonaut: 60yrs since ‘Soviet space dog’ Laika became 1st Earthling in orbit https://briefnews.eu/canine-cosmonaut-60yrs-since-soviet-space-dog-laika-became-1st-earthling-in-orbit/ https://briefnews.eu/canine-cosmonaut-60yrs-since-soviet-space-dog-laika-became-1st-earthling-in-orbit/#respond Fri, 03 Nov 2017 09:39:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canine-cosmonaut-60yrs-since-soviet-space-dog-laika-became-1st-earthling-in-orbit/

November 3 marks the 60th anniversary of Soviet space-dog Laika blasting off in Sputnik 2 to become the first Earth-born creature to orbit our planet.

Though it goes without saying Laika wasn’t aware of her self-sacrifice for the greater cause of human space exploration, she became a global phenomenon.

“Laika’s portrait was published on the front pages of the main newspapers around the world,” Olesya Turkina, author of ‘Soviet Space Dogs,’ told RT.com. “Countless postcards, cigarette packets – ‘Laika’ sweets, match boxes, sweet boxes, stamps, pins, calendars all with Laika’s portrait were produced.”

“In the USSR, to commemorate her heroic death and to glorify her unwilling sacrifice for the sake of humanity, Laika become a hero of children’s fairy-tales dedicated to the Soviet Space Dogs.”

Why Laika?

Like all of the Soviet space dogs (and there were quite a few – 36 in all) Laika was a stray, picked up on the tough streets of Moscow. It was this fact, coupled with her photogenic looks that made her the perfect candidate for the daunting mission.

“Her face, light in color, with dark brown spots and startled expression reproduced well in black and white photos and film,” Turkina said.

But why were dogs chosen to pioneer space travel over other animals, such as chimpanzees for example?

Adilya Kotovskaya, one of the scientists involved with the 1957 mission, said in 2015 that there were three simple reasons.

“Firstly, plain mutts were perfect for the mission. They had quite a difficult life: either [because of] cold or hunger. It means they are used to various environmental conditions. Secondly, dogs like us, humans are their owners. They are easily trained. Thirdly, the dogs’ physiology has been extensively studied since the times of Ivan Pavlov.”

Emotional

Altogether, three dogs (Albina, Laika and Mushka) were trained for the mission, which was always meant to be a one-way trip, as technology hadn’t yet been developed to safely return the animals to earth.

The animals went through a grueling training regime in preparation for the historic voyage. They donned spacesuits and were kept in smaller and smaller capsules, with very little room to maneuver, to get them use to Sputnik 2, the second man-made satellite to be launched into orbit (Sputnik being the first a month prior, much to the dismay of the Americans).

As a result of the recruiting and training process, and perhaps simply because some of them were dog lovers who knew Laika would be giving her life to aid the advance of human exploration, some scientists formed a bond with their canine cosmonaut.

“Before Laika’s flight, I started crying,” Kotovskaya said. “Everyone knew in advance that she would die, and we were asking her to forgive us.”

One of those involved in the mission, Dr Vladimir Yazdovsky, brought Laika home to his family on the lead up to launch day. He had trained her and personally selected her for the mission.

Lift Off

The groundbreaking launch, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, was due to take place on October 31, but Laika was forced to wait on the launchpad for three days before Sputnik 2 eventually took off.

Although never meant to be a return trip for the brave Laika, it was hoped she’d survive for one week and, at the time, the Soviets did a good job of convincing the world she died a painless, pre-planned death. It wasn’t until decades later that the truth surfaced.

After five to seven hours of the mission, no life signs were being received from Laika. By the fourth orbit, it was apparent that Laika had died from overheating and stress.

“The equipment didn’t allow [Laika] to come back from space at the time, and then the flight orbit changed, having taken the elliptic shape, and the rocket was in the sun more than planned,” explains Kotovskaya. “The module overheated, and Laika died within a day, although she was supposed to spend a week in space. Then the rocket went off the orbit and burnt in the atmosphere.”

Despite surviving for just a few hours Laika remains an icon of space travel.

“Laika’s flight proved that humans can be sent to space,” Turkina told RT.com. “She survived g-forces during the launch, entry to orbit, microgravity and had orbited the Earth multiple times.”

“Laika provided a context for sending man into space. They say that [Yuri] Gagarin once joked that he does not know if he is the first man or the last dog in space.”

Tour ‘The LAIKA Experience’ With Our Gorgeous Photo Gallery [Comic-Con 2017] https://briefnews.eu/tour-the-laika-experience-with-our-gorgeous-photo-gallery-comic-con-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/tour-the-laika-experience-with-our-gorgeous-photo-gallery-comic-con-2017/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 16:52:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tour-the-laika-experience-with-our-gorgeous-photo-gallery-comic-con-2017/ the laika experience

Comic-Con doesn’t officially kick off until tomorrow (although it unofficially kicks off tonight with all kinds of previews and off-site presentations), but everyone in San Diego can already get a little taste of some cinematic magic. LAIKA, the stop-motion animation studio behind films like Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, and Kubo and the Two Strings has set up shop in the Gaslamp District, offering a walkthrough mini-museum showing off puppets and sets from their movies.

And while you don’t have to be a Comic-Con badge holder to check out The LAIKA Experience, not everyone can be in San Diego. But we’ve got you covered. We checked it out and we returned with photos. Lots and lots of photos.

If you do happen to be in San Diego, here are the remaining hours when The LAIKA Experience will be open to the public:

  • Thursday, July 20: 11:00 AM to 11 PM
  • Friday, July 21: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Saturday, July 22: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
  • Sunday, July 23: 10:00 AM-6:00 PM

But everyone else can peruse the gallery below (photos are by our own Peter Sciretta and Ethan Anderton) to get a taste of what the experience is like. These puppets and models are stunning in action on screen, but they’re equally stunning when they’re static and just on display behind glass. The level of detail and artistry put into the characters and their world is unreal.

If you happen to in San Diego for Comic-Con (or because, you know, you live in San Diego), The LAIKA Experience is worth a wait in line. As impressive as CG-animated movies are these days, there’s just something downright magical about what this studio is doing. Being able to see actual, physical pieces like this is a reminder of why stop-motion is such a special medium.

Oscar®-winning animation studio LAIKA, creators of Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo and the Two Strings, brings its pop-up exhibit The LAIKA Experience to the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter from Friday, July 14th to Sunday, July 23rd.  Admission is free to the exhibit, which will feature props, puppets, monsters, and sets from LAIKA’s award-winning films as well as fan art, a photo/GIF booth with LAIKA characters, daily drawings for a pair of Nike’s LAIKA-themed shoes designed by Tinker Hatfield, social media activations, LAIKA merchandise offered for sale (including a new limited edition Coraline doll and display case), giveaways, and more.  In addition to the pop-up exhibit, LAIKA’s walkaround costumed characters will appear at various locations in the Gaslamp Quarter for fan interaction and photos.

Travis Knight, President & CEO of LAIKA and director of Kubo and the Two Strings, will autograph merchandise purchased at the exhibit on Friday, July 21st at 3pm.

The LAIKA Experience, the innovative and interactive pop-up event, will be located at 520 Fifth Avenue and will feature an up-close look at the artistic detail and imagination behind LAIKA’s groundbreaking films, all of which have been nominated for Academy Awards® and numerous other honors. The exhibit will showcase the evolution of the studio’s unique blend of handcrafted stop-motion animation and visual effects magic in four imaginatively themed rooms inspired by each of LAIKA’s films. The extensive display of original sets, puppets and props will immerse guests in LAIKA’s fantastical worlds.

“LAIKA’s films are a unique fusion of art, craft, science, and technology, commingling cinema’s history with the future of film. But our techniques are often shrouded in mystery,” says President & CEO Travis Knight.  “The LAIKA Experience offers a rare opportunity to peel back the curtain, giving fans an immersive, up-close look at our process, characters, worlds, and dreams made manifest.”

“At LAIKA we’re thrilled to take our ‘act on the road’,” says Brad Wald, CFO and Senior Vice President of Business Operations.  “Past LAIKA exhibits at Universal Studios and the Japanese American Museum  have been fan favorites and proved very successful in launching our new consumer products initiative, leading us to bring several ‘exclusive’ items with us to San Diego.  All of these exhibits, including a major eight-month long retrospective at the Portland Art Museum starting this October, are a direct response to our global fans clamoring to see more LAIKA in the marketplace. We’re thrilled to bring LAIKA directly to them where they can connect with the studio in a more intimate way.”

Plus, those interested will be able to check out a Facebook Live tour of the exhibit from 2:00 P.M. – 3:oo P.M., hosted by Travis Knight and New York Times bestselling author Tony DiTerlizzi (The Spiderwick Chronicles; Star Wars: Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight). Laika studios founder Travis Knight will direct a Transformers spinoff https://briefnews.eu/laika-studios-founder-travis-knight-will-direct-a-transformers-spinoff/ https://briefnews.eu/laika-studios-founder-travis-knight-will-direct-a-transformers-spinoff/#respond Fri, 03 Mar 2017 19:39:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/laika-studios-founder-travis-knight-will-direct-a-transformers-spinoff/

Travis Knight, who has directed quietly powerful indies like Kubo and the Two Strings, will helm the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, Deadline reports. Knight is the founder and CEO of the relatively small Portland-based animation studio Laika, so his decision to get behind a big-budget film is a bit unusual.

In an interview with The Verge last year, Knight seemed to take pride in his relatively bare-bones operation. Speaking about Kubo, Knight said, “The entire film is filled with all different kinds of imperfections and failings, and it’s always something you have to come to terms with. Sometimes it’s maddening to work in this medium, because of the imperfections. But that’s one of the things that makes it inherently beautiful. We really embrace that side of it, because it makes these films human.”

Bumblebee, produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, will have a much bigger budget and will presumably look a lot slicker than any of Knight’s past projects. The budgets for the previous four Transformers movies, including Transformers, Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, and Age of Extinction, have been in the $ 150 to $ 210 million range.

The move also raises small questions about Laika’s future. Knight has said he wants Laika to produce one feature a year, but that goal could change if Knight decides he has bigger blockbusters to fry.
