WHEN Bill Browder investigated a $ 230m fraud perpetrated by Russian officials against his investment company, Hermitage, he uncovered a money trail that led to several financial centres, including London. At least $ 30m of the stolen money flowed into British banks. Much was moved through British shell companies with British nominee directors, one of which was set up by a corporate-registration firm based near Mr Browder’s London office. If A Star is Born was the folk song of the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, a familiar tune brilliantly rendered by cover artist Bradley Cooper, then Teen Spirit was its pop song. The film is derivative, calibrated to appeal to a lowest-common-denominator audience … and yet admittedly catchy, even if it’s immediately recognizable as an interchangeable work.

Max Minghella, best known for his work in front of the camera as Divya Narendra from The Social Network and Nick Blaine on TV’s The Handmaid’s Tale, takes his first stab at directing with Teen Spirit. While he shows his chops as a confident visual stylist (with a real boost from ace cinematographer Autumn Durald-Arkapaw), Minghella does himself few favors with his own cliché-ridden script. The better elements of Teen Spirit struggle to break out from beneath the story’s familiarity.

The general direction of Teen Spirit is exactly what you’d assume from reading the film’s logline. Elle Fanning’s Violet is a poor, shy English girl living in the tiny Isle of Wight who enters a televised singing contest. Of course, she does this against the wishes of her Polish immigrant mother (Agnieszka Grochowska), who tells her daughter that she can sing in church choir if she wants to exercise her vocal chords. Still, she sneaks out anyways – think she makes it past the first round? Perhaps Minghella’s strategy was to embrace recognizable plot points so the audience can focus on the performances, specifically Fanning’s, but his script adheres so rigidly to conventions that it’s far too easy to tune out entirely.

Minghella’s film is simple, sure, but it’s not bad. There are details and texture to Teen Spirit that show his thoughtfulness behind the camera. For example, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, we can see Violet has doodled an intricate drawing on the back of her hand. The sketch suggests yet another avenue through which the character’s repressed creative energy finds expression.

Or, on a grander scale, there’s the way Minghella handles the film’s most prominent supporting role, Vlad (Zlatko Buric). A former opera star turned town drunkard, Vlad recognizes Violet’s talent immediately once he hears her at an open mic gig. Violet ends up needing to enlist his help when in need of a guardian for her callback audition, and Vlad has a form of repayment in mind – he wants to serve as her mentor and manager. While he does play this crucial part in her development, Minghella never gives him credit for Violet’s maturation as a performer.

That evolution is purely her own, and Fanning excels at realizing the artist’s journey. The gradual blossoming of Violet into a stage presence that matches her vocal virtuosity is a joy to behold, even if the rest of Teen Spirit struggles to match Fanning’s appeal. Most of the songs she performs in the film are covers of familiar pop songs, and when Violet delivers a show-stopping rendition of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” I had to really bite my tongue not to start singing along with her.

Of course, Minghella does not let that rise continue unchecked. What would a movie about a rising star be if it did not include a stern note of caution about the dangers of fame? The scolding in Teen Spirit feels particularly tacked-on and out of sync with the rest of the film. On the one hand, Violet still must work to improve her performing skills in order to win the competition. Yet at the same time, she’s also already a figure of such notoriety that Vlad can drag her out of a party to let her know that it’s all gone to her head? Maybe it’s best to apply the logic of a pop song to Teen Spirit – don’t overthink things that aren’t meant to be overthought.

James Cameron has been in the internet’s hot seat lately for saying a lot of dumb, polarizing things. But this one may take the cake.

Cameron was asked about his cinematic influences that helped him shape his decades-long career as one of the sci-fi greats — one of which was understandably Stanley Kubrick’s seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey. But Cameron apparently loves nothing more than the taste of his feet, because his latest quote is a classic foot-in-the-mouth move from the Titanic and Avatar director.

James Cameron loves 2001: A Space Odyssey, but he doesn’t like it. And no, he’s not misquoting a Flo Rida song, Cameron is explaining how he could not completely embrace a film that helped shape him as a director.

In an interview with The Star, Cameron said that Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi magnum opus “had an enormous, enormous impact” on him when he was younger, but still finds it a little too “sterile.”

“It’s not a film that I like; it’s a film that I love. When I say I don’t like it, it’s that I don’t like the feel of the film. I don’t like its sterility. I like a film with a little more emotional balls, just as a movie, to get involved in. But as a work of art, I love [2001]. It had an had an enormous, enormous impact on me, at a certain point.”

But sterile or not, Cameron still thinks of the film fondly, recounting to The Star how he first saw the movie at age 13 in Toronto, five days after it opened in 1968. “It was probably five days after it opened, the summer of ’68,” Cameron says. “I watched [2001] from front row centre in the balcony, which put me dead in line to the Star Gate [Jupiter trip sequence], right on the axis, so I felt like I was falling down through the Star Gate.”

Cameron is not the only major director to look to 2001 as a major influence on his work. Christopher Nolan is famous for his undying love for 2001: A Space Odyssey, which he thinks should be required viewing for every 7-year-old. Nolan is even bringing an unrestored 70mm print of 2001 (probably his own personal copy) to screen at Cannes next month, just in time for the 50th anniversary 70mm re-release hitting select theaters this May. Let’s hope Nolan doesn’t hear what Cameron has to say about 2001. Or actually, let’s hope that he does, because I suddenly want to see these two major sci-fi filmmakers tussle over the honor of a 50-year-old classic film.

Sensing an opening, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi says it plans to enter the U.S. smartphone market in late 2018 or 2019.

The news comes just several weeks after rival Huawei, which appeared to have a head start, had its hopes dashed when a partnership with AT&T was scuttled. While both companies said the parting was mutual, the decision came after intense political blowback from U.S. politicians who worried that Huawei’s technology poses security risks for U.S. businesses and customers.

Today, the Wall Street Journal reported that Xiaomi chair Lei Jun told one of its reporters: “We’ve always been considering entering the U.S. market. We plan to start entering the market by end 2018, or by early 2019.”

In general, while Chinese tech companies have become massive primarily by succeeding on their home turf, they are facing challenges in exporting that success to Western markets.

Indeed, while Xiaomi seems poised to take a big step, there’s no word yet on a carrier partner, which would be critical to making actually headway in the market.

Huawei is selling an unlocked version of its Mate10 Pro in the U.S., positioning it as a premium Android device to rival Apple’s iPhone X. Xiaomi could certainly go the same route. But without the marketing muscle of a carrier and the push on the sales floor in carrier stores, it’s an uphill climb.

It will be interesting to see if Xiaomi can get a different consideration from U.S. carriers and politicians than Huawei. Xiaomi is primarily a consumer company, whereas Huawei has become a giant seller of networking equipment in addition to consumer products. It’s the networking products that have often spooked U.S. politicians.

Airports currently use scanners that provide a two-dimensional X-ray image, which can make it difficult to analyze a bag’s contents, especially when travelers clutter luggage with other items to avoid checked baggage fees. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) currently asks passengers to put large electronics and other items in separate bins for screening.

“We have some funding for the CT technology. We do not have the funding to deploy it at every airport,” acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke told a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Thursday, according to The Hill. “To buy it for every airport would require much more than a reprogramming” of funds from Congress.

CT technology is expensive: one scanner made by Analogic costs $ 300,000, double the price of a standard X-ray scanner, according to WIRE magazine. Despite a proposed $ 44.1 billion budget for the DHS in Fiscal Year 2018, which includes a $ 2.8 billion increase from the year prior, and a $ 3.1 billion budget for 43,190 TSA officers, the department claims it cannot afford the 3-D scanners.

In June, the TSA began testing the new 3-D scanners with passengers on American Airlines, which purchased eight machines for airports in Phoenix and Boston.

“We already use this type of technology for checked baggage, and we expect these smaller checkpoint-sized machines will provide the same high level of security,” Huban Gowadia, TSA’s acting administrator, told USA Today at the time.

The new scanners are being considered as the US grapples with whether to ban electronics larger than cell phones in carry-on bags on flights from other countries. European countries already ban laptops.

DHS banned laptops and other electronics larger than a cellphone in March in carry-on bags on flights from 10 airports in the Middle East and Africa. The order came in response to intelligence that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) had developed explosives that resembled laptop batteries, but that would still allow the electronic devices to turn on.

“We’re using atomic profile, and the density of material, through the CT scan and slices of the bag,” Mark Laustra, who’s leading the rollout of this tech for the company told WIRE. “It’s just like getting a brain scan at a hospital and looking for a brain tumor.”

It is also a hard sell to Congress when the TSA is an unpopular government agency, and often the target for budget cuts.
