MELANOMA skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with around 16,700 new cases diagnosed every year. It is usually caused by sunlight damaging the DNA in your skin. While there are certain measures you can take to prevent developing the disease in the first place a new study has shown a certain vitamin supplement could also improve your chances of surviving the cancer.

Ratings: New Amsterdam Returns Low Lacking This Is Us as Lead-In https://briefnews.eu/ratings-new-amsterdam-returns-low-lacking-this-is-us-as-lead-in/ https://briefnews.eu/ratings-new-amsterdam-returns-low-lacking-this-is-us-as-lead-in/#respond Wed, 10 Apr 2019 15:52:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ratings-new-amsterdam-returns-low-lacking-this-is-us-as-lead-in/

NBC’s New Amsterdam and CBS’ NCIS: New Orleans both suffered with weaker lead-ins this Tuesday.

Opening NBC’s night, The Voice (7.2 mil/1.2, read recap) matched Monday’s Battle Round numbers. Now airing an hour earlier, The Village (4.2 mil/0.7) held steady but was obviously down sharply from time slot predecessor This Is Us‘ Season 3 average (8.3 mil/2.0). The already renewed New Amsterdam then returned from a month-long break to 4.6 million total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating, down 23 and 30 percent to mark season lows.

Over on CBS, NCIS (11.6 mil/1.1) dropped a few eyeballs while holding onto last week’s demo low. The Code previewed to 8.2 mil and a 0.7, lower than anything FBI has put up in the time slot to date. (The Code will now air Mondays at 9 pm; grade it below!) Bubble drama NCIS: New Orleans (6.7 mil/0.6) dipped 7 percent and two tenths to match and hit series lows.

Elsewhere….

ABC | American Housewife (3.6 mil/0.7) dipped, while The Kids Are Alright (2.9 mil/0.6), black-ish (2.9 mil/0.7) and Splitting Up Together‘s Season 2 finale (2.5 mil/0.6) were all steady. The Rookie (3.6 mil/0.6) delivered its second-smallest audience yet while dipping to match its demo low.

THE CW | Leading out of a Flash rerun, Roswell NM (817K/0.2) dipped to a new audience low while steady in the demo.

FOX | MasterChef Junior (2.7 mil/0.7) and Mental Samurai (1.9 mil/0.6) were steady.

Netflix’s ‘Altered Carbon’ is a Visual Feast Lacking Sustenance https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-altered-carbon-is-a-visual-feast-lacking-sustenance/ https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-altered-carbon-is-a-visual-feast-lacking-sustenance/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 17:03:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflixs-altered-carbon-is-a-visual-feast-lacking-sustenance/ altered carbon review

Netflix’s new original series Altered Carbon is a big, bold, visually stunning sci-fi extravaganza. Unfortunately, the story the show is telling fails to live up to the jaw-dropping visuals on display, ultimately robbing the series of its power.

Minor spoilers follow.

A Visual Feast Lacking Sustenance

Netflix’s bombastic new sci-fi action-drama Altered Carbon comes barreling out of the gate with little or no regard for logic. Here is a show with a rich, complex, confusing mythology that doesn’t give two shits about catching the audience up. Instead, it lays into the viewer, and unfolds a wild, exciting, downright energizing first episode full of jaw-dropping moments and bold decisions.

And then proceeds to blow it.

Adapted from the novel by Richard K. Morgan, Altered Carbon, created by Alita: Battle Angel co-screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, is a visual feast, with nearly every inch of every frame seemingly tailor-made to show up as part of the One Perfect Shot Twitter account. Like another visually sumptuous Netflix series, The Crown, so much effort has been poured into creating the world of this show – a distinct, neon-drenched, cyberpunk-infused world where nearly every dollar of the budget is up on the screen. Alas, everyone was so obsessed with getting the look of this show right that they forgot to focus on the story.

Set more than 300 years in the future, the world of Altered Carbon is a world free of death. Human beings can seemingly live forever with the help of alien technology that downloads a person’s consciousness (or soul, if you will) into a little disc dubbed a stack. When the current body, or “sleeve” as everyone calls them, you happen to inhabit dies, due to old age or, more likely, violent trauma, your stack can be slapped onto the back of the neck of a new sleeve, and you’re back. In other words, you live, you die, you live again, to quote a far-superior tale of futuristic entertainment.

It’s a neat concept, but it also inadvertently lends an unintentional nihilism to the proceedings. Characters can beat, bludgeon and behead each other with very little consequence. Eventually, the show starts to make a statement about this – certain characters start talking about how they need to rebel against immortality and accept death, as this method of eternal life has only made the wealthy more wealthy and the powerful more powerful. But for the most of Altered Carbon’s runtime, the show treats life itself indifferently. It doesn’t matter how much torture or destruction a physical form endures – a new body is just a sleeve away.

So why should we even care what happens to anyone on this show, if the stakes are so low?

It’s a problem Altered Carbon doesn’t quite know how to address, and as a result, it never even tries. Instead, the series is content to be a slice of future-noir borrowing heavily from the Blade Runner playbook. Takeshi Kovacs (Byron Mann) was once a super soldier fighting against the new world order. Then he got himself caught by the powers-that-be, and had his stack locked away in solitary for centuries. Now, Kovacs is brought back to life in a brand new sleeve – that of a dead cop, played by Suicide Squad’s Joel Kinnaman.

Right away, you’ve likely spotted a big problem. Altered Carbon is trafficking in the same exact form of whitewashing that plagued the ill-advised live-action remake of Ghost in the Shell. The original Kovacs is an Asian man now trapped inside the body of a white man. Why, exactly, Netflix thought it was a good idea to go ahead with this concept after so much justified outcry arose around Ghost in the Shell is a mystery, but here we are.

To Altered Carbon’s credit, it gives Kinnaman and Mann almost the same amount of screentime. While Kinnaman’s Kovacs is usually front-and-center, Altered Carbon features extensive flashbacks in nearly every episode giving Mann’s O.G. Kovacs (as he’s called in the credits) plenty of time to shine. Still, the specter of whitewashing is hard to shake off.

Kovacs has been brought out of hibernation to help solve the “murder” of super-rich bad guy Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy). The “murder” is, of course, subjective, since Bancroft is up and walking around in a new cloned sleeve. As plot devices would have it, Bancroft can’t remember who murdered his previous sleeve, and so now Kovacs must play detective to get to the bottom of it.

Sort of.

How to Achieve Quick Success at Work Even If You’re Lacking in Clear Direction https://briefnews.eu/how-to-achieve-quick-success-at-work-even-if-youre-lacking-in-clear-direction/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-achieve-quick-success-at-work-even-if-youre-lacking-in-clear-direction/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 10:53:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-achieve-quick-success-at-work-even-if-youre-lacking-in-clear-direction/

Designing your career can feel like an incredibly risky business. Having a good career coach by your side makes that challenge much more manageable. Whether you’ve ended up somewhere that feels like a dead end or you’re worried about the options ahead of you, taking the next step in your career is stressful.

Will you be able to handle a new position? What skills are you developing, and which are you neglecting? Which path is most viable, and which has the best financial incentive? A career coach won’t present you with the exact job opportunity you need at the right time, but they will help you answer all these questions, and more, that can help you create a roadmap for your future path.

Why Each of Us Needs a Career Coach

A career coach is helpful for someone looking to make a major change[1] in field, position or goal. This person will discuss with you your personal life goals outside of your career, and then discuss with you which careers are compatible with those goals, and which will require compromise. They will evaluate your personality and skills in order to determine which position best aligns with your talents, as well as which will demand things of you that you wouldn’t be able to provide.

Your career coach can help you design a path [2] and an ultimate map for your future, including identifying what steps you will need to take to get there, what skills you will need to improve, what training or education you should seek and what industry you can consider. And although a career coach won’t hand select jobs to you, they will help you navigate through the job hunting process. Your coach can offer tips for getting through interviews, a keen eye to go over your cover letter, resume and applications, and advice on where to hunt for good positions.

How Having a Coach Can Fast-Track Your Career Success

Making a major career change, whether it’s changing the role you take on or the industry you work in, can feel like an impossible struggle. Outside of college, you rarely get an easy opportunity to prepare yourself for entering an industry, which makes a mid-life change feel overwhelming. This is where a good career coach comes in. He can help you figure out how to make that transition between positions or industries, including learning what skills you can put forward, what you can do to improve your qualifications and where you can enter in the industry to begin your new path.

A career coach will not do your job search for you, will not personally network you into an industry and will not give you a magical leg up. If you aren’t trying to make a major career change, you likely don’t need their services – your own knowledge of the industry or position should be comparable to theirs, or a quick Google search about people in your field should answer your question.

How to Find a Career Coach Who Caters to Your Need

Once you’ve decided you want to make a change and begin the hunt [3] for a career coach, you must be on alert for scammers. Plenty of people are trying to sell you promises they can’t keep. Avoid career coaches who seem to have a plan for you before you tell them about yourself, as well as coaches who have no references to give.

Try networking around for a career coach among friends and associates, searching for recommendations and previous experiences. Since there are no specific qualifications to make someone a career coach, it is important that you know someone’s reputation in order to consider them as a coach. Don’t call up the first person you find on Google – look for recommendations, reviews, honest opinions and feedback from your industry, community or connections. Look for news about your coach, their presence on social media and on the internet in general

Your coach’s personality will play a major factor in how comfortable you are with them, so feel free to request an informal conversation or interview before committing to anyone, but a career coach’s time is valuable – payments can run up to $ 300 per hour – so most will likely not give you too much free time to talk about yourself before you’ll have to start paying.

Don’t expect face to face meetings with your coach – many prefer internet or phone conversations nowadays. This gives you more freedom, however, to find a coach that fits well with you and understands your goals. Finally, don’t expect the process of working with your coach to be quick. You shouldn’t expect your coach to place you in a new career in a few weeks – the average relationship lasts six months to a year. This is about redesigning your career. It takes time.

Last weekend's TV reviewed: Geri’s jaunt lacking spice https://briefnews.eu/last-weekends-tv-reviewed-geris-jaunt-lacking-spice/ https://briefnews.eu/last-weekends-tv-reviewed-geris-jaunt-lacking-spice/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 05:05:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/last-weekends-tv-reviewed-geris-jaunt-lacking-spice/

Carnaby Street, the King’s Road, the sexual revolution – none of that was going on for Sergeant Baylis.

Geri’s 1990s: My Drive To Freedom (BBC2, Saturday) highlighted what is wrong with summing up entire decades, on television at least.

I do not think it would be unkind to point out there was precious little Geri Horner (née Halliwell) in this package.

Although the programme followed a path taken previously by Keith Richard and Boy George, for example, this particular autobiographical wandering included just a smattering of anecdotes and insights.

The former Spice Girl spoke movingly about the shock of losing her father and how that had driven her to work so hard, almost to escape the overwhelming grief.

As far as her quitting the most successful girl band in history went, Geri just said she was tired.

Despite the programme being framed as a personal journey, our narrator kept us at arm’s length throughout and it became, in the main, one of those tiresome conveyor belts of clips, commented upon by people who confuse their own experiences with those of the whole of mankind.

So we had bits of The Big Breakfast and revolutionary youth show The Word. We had Blur and Oasis battling it out, Tony Blair getting into No.10, ravers, lads mags, football hysteria and all the other things that mysteriously now get called “iconic”.

Assorted rent-a-comment types, meanwhile, faded in and out, talking about the optimism of the era, the rediscovery of patriotism in the form of Cool Britannia, the rejection of Eighties’ selfishness, the mass grief over Diana and so on, as if these were things you could see under a microscope instead of very limited, personal opinions.

My own experience of the rave scene was that a lot of greedy selfish types saw it as a chance to make money – and did.

As for Cool Britannia and optimism, I spent much of the era in a bedsit in Balham trying to write jokes for Ant and Dec and getting more miserable by the day.

Had I flown a Union Jack out of my window my neighbours would probably have thought I was trying to offend. My 1990s were different.

Lord knows what Geri’s were like. Beyond the clips, the headlines and the hogwash we had all heard before, she was not giving much away.

Down The Mighty River with Steve Backshall (BBC2, Sunday) saw the naturalist and adventurer canoeing his way down Papua New Guinea’s Baliem River, spotting birds of paradise and hobnobbing with the Dani tribe.

The steep mountains, the thick jungle and the tempestuous rivers keep Papua’s humans apart – and that is the way at least some of them seem to like it.

Steve’s first attempt to explore some underground caves was scuppered, basically because none of the local groups could agree who actually owned them.

Later, he shared his hut with a venerable warrior who had been dead for the past 200 years. Carefully smoked over a fire, the mummified remains of this man – Agat Memente Mabil – now sat in a corner, ready to jump up and run into battle at any time. Paradise it may be – but it is never peaceful.

For Honor reviews still lacking as new gameplay update is revealed https://briefnews.eu/for-honor-reviews-still-lacking-as-new-gameplay-update-is-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/for-honor-reviews-still-lacking-as-new-gameplay-update-is-revealed/#respond Wed, 15 Feb 2017 06:56:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/for-honor-reviews-still-lacking-as-new-gameplay-update-is-revealed/

There is currently only a few full For Honor Reviews to be found online, with most of the major websites waiting longer to give their final verdict.

This is due to the game being unavailable to review ahead of its release date, a move made by Ubisoft due to the massive important of online gameplay.

Attack of the Fan Boy have provided the first look at For Honor following both closed and open beta earlier this year.

Giving its For Honor review a 4.5/5, here’s what the site had to say about the game single-player campaign: “For Honor is heavily focused on the multiplayer components, but it has a surprisingly strong single player campaign.

“The story is kind of a confusing mess, presenting you with a world that saw some sort of calamity a thousand years ago. This caused the globe to become embroiled in conflict for that thousand years, with peace only becoming a reality in the last few years.

“The three groups in these conflicts are the ones you choose from in multiplayer: knights, vikings, and samurai. Why they’re in the same region? Who knows.

“What we do know is that a new warlord named Apollyon is trying to bring back the wars that just now ended. You play as alternating characters, with a specific chapter for each faction.

“You’ll work for and against Apollyon, trying to figure out what is happening in this world, and maybe how to avoid plunging the globe back into endless combat.”

Ubisoft recently revealed the full day one patch notes from For Honor first official update:

Matchmaking

  • All countries around the Mediterranean Sea are now part of the European continent

Heroes

  • Collisions improvements and fixes
  • Improved animations
