Ranvir Singh, 43, was joined by Labour‘s Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green, 60, to discuss the Government’s ongoing action plan to deal with the repercussions caused by coronavirus. One such topic they talked about was the Treasury considering increasing taxes by a hike of £20bn, which some Conservative backbenchers are warning against over worries it would cause greater economic hardship. When the Good Morning Britain presenter put to the politician how Labour would address the issue, the pair ended up talking over one another as they clashed on the ITV show.

The presenter asked Ms Green: “How would Labour start paying back everything that coronavirus has cost us with the furlough scheme and other things we are having to pay for?

“Rishi Sunak will inevitably have to raise taxes quite a lot, corporation tax, capital gains tax, does Labour support that?”

“Well we will have to see the detail of what Rishi Sunak’s tax proposals are, but obviously we will have to, first of all, protect people as the crisis continues,” the politician began.

“And some of the way in which some of the money has been spent has not been as effective, for example, the furlough scheme we would like to see extended for certain sectors that still can’t go back to work, instead of giving a job retention bonus to employers who might have kept their staff on anyway.

“In due course, once we have gone through the crisis and we’ve got people safely through it and can make sure people’s economic circumstances are also secure, of course, we are going to have to look at a fair model of raising money,” she continued before the presenter interrupted.

Ms Green added: “Taxing progressively so those who have more bear the biggest share of the burden,” but didn’t quite finish her sentence because the host spoke over the top of her.

“Kate, those people at the top are the ones who are employing people whose businesses have been very very badly affected during coronavirus,” Singh said as she shut down the Labour MP.

As they both fought to get their voices heard, the politician could be heard exclaiming: “No! Not true, not true.

The presenter continued, however, and explained: “There is a suggestion from business groups that tax rises, in particular, would choke off any kind of resurgence in the economy.”

The Shadow Education Secretary added: “Those contingency plans could include giving much greater clarity now to how teacher grading would work, how course work would be reflected and also having a proper and robust appeals process.

“I don’t think we need to assume today that it won’t be possible for an exams series to take place next summer.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s fair if and when it does but it is really important that the Government does the type of contingency plan that it totally failed to do.

“We saw what happened last month with the utter fiasco of GCSE, Btec and A-Level results. Issues are still not resolved and young people have been put in a horrible position.”

Taking to Twitter, viewers addressed the exams discussion as one wrote: “Wish some one would make a decision on whats happening with them.”

Another added: “If they’re not, the students should be given the same combined teacher assessments that were allowed this year.

“It’s only fair way, they’ve missed five months, not completed 1st year of 6th form, it would be unfair otherwise.”

Whilst a third commented: “All exams should be cancelled in the whole if the U.K. There is no way the children can catch up on work missed from March and work still to learn and learning reinforcement. Grades for this year should be based on teacher predictions again.”

“That’s really sad,” the presenter remarked and Emily continued: “It’s funny, a lot of the horrible stuff I don’t remember, but I remember the cats being put down.”

After suggesting Emily had an “understanding of struggling”, she spoke about her education and how she doesn’t wish for any child to go through a similar thing to her.

“There are more things to be honest, things like when we had free school dinners, we had to queue up separately. That was humiliating, I remember that even as a young child I was humiliated by that,” Emily began.

“I was humiliated by low expectations, my careers advisor when I asked what could I do with my life he said I could always visit people in prison.

“You know, I do have chips on both shoulder, so I have become very balanced.”

“While not engaging with these massive massive warning signs coming from working class people.”

In the studio, former Tory MP, Ed Vaizey was asked his opinion of Eleanor Thornberry.

“I do not think the Tories would be frightened of Eleanor Thornberry,” he began.

“Whether this is fair or unfair the Tories will characterise her as part of the Islington liberal metropolitan elite that is completely out of touch with the voters that they now have.

“I think there would be little dances of joy if she got it.”

‘Why is that so funny?’ Emily Thornberry slammed by Charlie Stayt over Labour leadership https://briefnews.eu/why-is-that-so-funny-emily-thornberry-slammed-by-charlie-stayt-over-labour-leadership/ https://briefnews.eu/why-is-that-so-funny-emily-thornberry-slammed-by-charlie-stayt-over-labour-leadership/#respond Thu, 19 Dec 2019 09:51:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-is-that-so-funny-emily-thornberry-slammed-by-charlie-stayt-over-labour-leadership/

Emily Thornberry joined BBC Breakfast hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Muchetty via a live video link this morning to discuss her role in the Labour party and her running to take over from Jeremy Corbyn as the new Labour leader. But Charlie was forced to ask her what was so funny when she was questioned as to who she would keep in office if she was in power.

Stayt began: “Looking forwards, a lot of people think that Jeremy Corbyn is surrounded by a group of people who have protected him from the outside world of what the general public think and that’s the way the general election vote turned out, do you accept that there is a problem right at the heart of the party?”

Thornberry explained: “I believe Jeremy was let down by the advisers that he had, I think -”

Stayt interrupted: “Who are still there.”

She continued: “Who are still there, so what we’ve seen is that there have been a number of letters go out to staff throughout Southside, to people in the leaders office, the people who advised the Shadow Cabinet including my own staff, who have been told they may be made redundant, but those who made the decision the strategic decisions before and during the General Election it looks like their jobs are not on the line and that seems to me to be wrong.”

Ms Thornberry sparked frustration as she laughed as Stayt asked: “So have you got a list of people that you are going to get rid of?”

He added: “I don’t understand why that’s funny because a lot of people think that’s what has to happen.

“If you want to make some kind of clean break from the past and I’m not even sure if you’re saying that you need to get rid of people so do you have a list?”

Thornberry explained: “What happens when a new leader is elected, it will be up to her to decide who is in the leaders office and who will be advising her so whoever is elected it will be up to her to decide who their advisers are that’s how it works.”

Stayt interrupted: “So expect sacking if Emily Thornberry becomes leader of the labour party it’s as simple as that.”

Thornberry chipped in: “I think expect us to continue to be the party that we are to continue to have the values that we do but to be led by someone who will make timely decisions and strong decisions.

“And who will take Boris Johnson on at the dispatch box and who will think through in a logical way where it is that we are going and what it is we are trying to do.

“For example you’ve been the Democrats taking on President Trump and getting as far as they have with impeachment, that is because they have had a clear strategy and they have worked together.

“It’s that sort of thing you need to do in opposition now I’m not saying that we are going to impeach Boris Johnson before you start saying that but, we need to be able to take Boris Johnson on and be clear about how we hold him to account and where it is that we are going as a party.”

Stayt interrupted again: “Many observers are saying that the potential candidate not declared as you are at this stage Rebecca Long Bailey, who a lot of people see as closet to Jeremy Corbyn’s in terms of politics and the way they see the party that she is the front runner.

“Do you think it would be a mistake for the party to stick with someone who has the principles that Jeremy Corbyn had?”

Thornberry explained: ”I think in the end you know when you look at principles and you look at politics.

“Let’s look at the manifesto, the truth of the matter is that the manifesto was a unifying document and when it comes to the politics we all agree.

“It is a question of how do we get ourselves into power in order to be able to implement that I believe that I’m a bridge from where we are to getting us into power.”

Stayt interrupted once again: “You got to the point where you were promising the earth, and people saw that and if you’re still sitting here now hoping to be the labour party leader and still saying you got all of that right then people might think that that’s not looking good.”

Thornberry said: “But I think if people are listening to me they’ll know that’s not what I’m saying, what I’m saying is there isn’t anything wrong with any of the individual promises in the manifesto.”

Farage vows to wipe out Labour in three heartlands ‘I’ve done it once I’ll do it again’ https://briefnews.eu/farage-vows-to-wipe-out-labour-in-three-heartlands-ive-done-it-once-ill-do-it-again/ https://briefnews.eu/farage-vows-to-wipe-out-labour-in-three-heartlands-ive-done-it-once-ill-do-it-again/#respond Mon, 04 Nov 2019 12:23:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/farage-vows-to-wipe-out-labour-in-three-heartlands-ive-done-it-once-ill-do-it-again/

Good Morning Britain returned to ITV this morning and Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid were back presenting after a brief hiatus for October half term. Joining them live in the studio was Nigel Farage MEP to discuss the upcoming General Election and what the Brexit Party’s stance was. During the conversation, he wasted no time in attacking the Labour Party and revealing his plan to take them down.

Farage is preparing to unveil 600 Brexit Party candidates for the December General Election this afternoon.

But the dramatic move has been accused of threatening to split the Leave vote, and the presenters were keen to ask Farage about this point. However, the guest was stern and explained how it was all part of “hurting Labour”.

“I’m going to take loads of Labour votes – I did it last time I’ll do it again,” Farage explained.

“People have a choice in this election; you can vote Liberal Democrats and cancel Brexit, you can vote Labour and have another referendum to remain or virtually remain.

“Or you can have a remainers Brexit with Boris Johnson,” Farage continued but was cut short by Morgan.

“There is another option,” the presenter said. “You can get behind Boris and have a political compromise.

“Help Boris get a thumping majority which allows him to rewrite the rule book after the event?”

Morgan also expressed concern about how Farage’s plan could potentially “bounce Boris out of Number 10”.

“The reason we have elections is to give people fresh choices and to start again,” Farage commented.

It comes after the Brexit Party leader failed to get a hardline Brexit alliance with the Prime Minister.

Steve Baker, the chair of the European Research Group warned Farage to be “the man who hands Boris a weak and indecisive Parliament, and bringing about, therefore, his own worst fears”.

Also during the interview, Farage explained why he wasn’t standing as a candidate in the General Election.

Reid accused him of being a “coward” after being defeated seven times, but Farage hit back and was firm about having only stood once as a candidate.

“I’ve only had one realistic chance of winning a seat, all the previous times I stood as a means of getting a message out and building up a political movement,” he told the show.

Last night’s Peston saw host Robert Peston quiz Rachel Riley on online bullying and her views on antisemitism in the Labour Party. As she did so, Labour MP Gloria said she was “sorry” for “antisemitism” in the party.

Robert asked: “Rachel, I’ve got to put this to you, obviously you’ve led a very powerful campaign against anti-semitism and in particular, the way the Labour party has not dealt with it properly but you also called Jeremy Corbyn an anti-Semite, which quite a lot of Labour supporters thought was you trolling him.”

“I’d say it again, if I can call Jeremy Corbyn an anti-Semite, I will,” Rachel replied.

“At that point I must say Jeremy Corbyn has said many times he is not an anti-Semite and that theres no place for anti semitism in the labour party,” Peston interrupted.

“Why do you feel justified in saying what is a very very powerful and some would say nasty campaign?”

“There’s a petition that 55,000 people have signed who agree with me,” Rachel hit back.

“This hasn’t come out of a vacuum, I post evidence and I post quotes and I post videos and I post photos and post stories.”

Robert asked: “Can I bring in Gloria, who’s been critical of, I think, the way the Labour party has dealt with antisemitism.

“You presumably do not believe, do not think your leader is an antisemite?”

Earlier in the show, Rachel opened up about being trolled online and responding to cyberbullies.

“You did take on those who trolled you, those who you thought said horrible things? What drove you to do that?” Robert asked.

“I, was acting as normal people do, you defend your views, you defend your belief,” Rachel replied. “You assume people are up for a debate.

“And I got trolled for being a woman and being on TV and supporting a football team.

BBC News: Dan Walker takes Labour MP to task for avoiding ‘straight answers’ over Brexit https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-takes-labour-mp-to-task-for-avoiding-straight-answers-over-brexit/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-takes-labour-mp-to-task-for-avoiding-straight-answers-over-brexit/#respond Mon, 02 Sep 2019 22:45:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-dan-walker-takes-labour-mp-to-task-for-avoiding-straight-answers-over-brexit/

Appearing on the BBC Breakfast sofa to be interviewed by Dan Walker and Louise Minchin, Long-Bailey spoke on Labour’s plans to put through legislation to stop a no deal Brexit.

But Walker wasn’t satisfied with the answers the politician was giving and expressed how “frustrating” it was to keep hearing “ifs and buts”.

It came as he tried to get to the bottom of Labour’s position on a general election.

Walker probed: “Can I try and get you to nail down your position? A general election for example is called by Boris Johnson before the 31st of October, would you back that?”

Long-Bailey answered: “Well, that’s why we are trying to push forward legislation this week that would avoid us being in a No Deal situation.

“There are two things we want to ensure happen this week, firstly we want to ensure that legislation is passed with the full support of Parliament to stop a No Deal Brexit without parliamentary approval and then secondly we want the government to recognise that and ensure that passes through Parliament.

“Any attempt by the government to stop that would be a constitutional outrage and we would not want to be a position during a general election where we crash out without a deal.

“That’s not to say we don’t support a general election because of course we do. We want to get rid of this Conservative government because of the damage it’s done to my constituency and every single constituency across the UK.”

However, it appeared Walker was not happy with her answer and took Rebecca to task over MPs not providing “straight answers”.

He declared: “I don’t want to sound cruel in saying this and you are one of these MPs that come on this programme a lot, you are always ready to answer questions but can you see how it’s frustrating for us to sit here, and I’m sure for our viewers as well, when we ask MPs questions and it’s hard to get a straight answer even when you ask a question two or three times sometimes about what would your position be on this it’s always ifs and buts.”

“You asked me if I want a general election, of course we want a general election,” Long-Bailey replied.

Walker interrupted to continue: “I know but don’t you think straight answers, they resonate with people, especially at a time like this?”

Long-Bailey retorted: “I am giving you straight answers, you asked me if we want a general election, of course we want a general election.

“We’ve asked for that repeatedly of a number of weeks and months now because we need to get rid of a Conservative government that’s done untold damage.

“Not just in relation to Brexit but to normal people’s lives right across the country.”

Some viewers were quick to agree with Walker and took to Twitter to comment.

One shared: “@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker I completely agree with you – it’s beyond frustrating when Politicians just repeat their agreed sound bites without actually answering a question.”

“@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker You’ve hit the nail on the head. We’re all fed up with empty promises. Please don’t interview people who won’t commit to anything,” a second added.

However, some did disagree as one viewer wrote: “@BBCBreakfast FFS she can’t give you a straight answer you morons, the permutations are so great it’s impossible to give black and white answers. Pathetic.”

Piers Morgan hits out at coward Keir Starmer amid sneaking Labour move ‘Grow a pair!’ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-hits-out-at-coward-keir-starmer-amid-sneaking-labour-move-grow-a-pair/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-hits-out-at-coward-keir-starmer-amid-sneaking-labour-move-grow-a-pair/#respond Wed, 28 Aug 2019 07:00:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-hits-out-at-coward-keir-starmer-amid-sneaking-labour-move-grow-a-pair/

Piers Morgan has had a break from his presenting duties on Good Morning Britain as he enjoys the summer but that hasn’t stopped him from speaking out on appearances from politicians.

Today, Sir Keir Starmer appeared on the breakfast show to discuss how he believes MPs should “pull together” to fight a No Deal Brexit.

Starmer also praised Jeremy Corbyn for bringing people together in an attempt to find a consensus.

But Morgan wasn’t impressed with Starmer and told him to “grow a pair” to return to the show when he’s back from his holiday.

The outspoken presenter also challenged Corbyn and Diane Abbot to interview with him on Good Morning Britain when he returns.

In a clip shared on Good Morning Britain’s Twitter, Starmer said: “I think it is looking quite good. I mean the question is whether there is a majority to stop this reckless No Deal approach that Johnson has set upon.

“Obviously that means bringing opposition parties together, that’s what we’re doing this morning.

“There’s been a lot of discussion over the summer about how this would work.

“So I think Jeremy Corbyn convening this, bringing people together, is the right thing to do.”

Morgan took to his own Twitter page to share the tweet and slammer Starmer’s remarks.

He wrote: “Amusing to see Labour’s senior politicians sneaking onto @GMB while I’m away, after hiding for the past year.

“Now grow a pair @Keir_Starmer (and you @jeremycorbyn @johnmcdonnellMP @HackneyAbbot) & come back on again when I return.”

Starmer also appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning where he continued to slate Johnson’s Brexit deal.

Presenter Charlie Stayt asked: “Our top story today; later today Jeremy Corbyn will meet with other opposition party leaders as he looks to secure support for his plan to block a No Deal Brexit.

“Well Shadow Secretary [Sir] Keir Starmer joins us now from westminster. What do you want out of this meeting today?”

Starmer replied: “The purpose of the meeting is to bring opposition leaders together and try to agree a plan into next week.

“I think it’s really important we act swiftly because Prime Minister Johnson is taking us on this reckless route to a No Deal Brexit, which will have really important ramifications for our country and we have to stop him in that.

“And therefore the purpose of the meeting is to have a pretty frank and open discussion; to say to Boris Johnson as soon as we get back, ‘This parliament is not prepared to support a No Deal Brexit.’”

Starmer added opposition leader would “take on a united front to take Johnson on in this reckless approach that he’s got”.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am while BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One also at 6am.

BBC News: Naga Munchetty in tense stand-off with Labour MP over Corbyn’s latest move https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-naga-munchetty-in-tense-stand-off-with-labour-mp-over-corbyns-latest-move/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-naga-munchetty-in-tense-stand-off-with-labour-mp-over-corbyns-latest-move/#respond Thu, 15 Aug 2019 09:20:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-news-naga-munchetty-in-tense-stand-off-with-labour-mp-over-corbyns-latest-move/

Rebecca Long Bailey is the Shadow Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary of the Labour Party in the Houses of Parliament.

Apeparing on today’s edition of BBC Breakfast, Bailey began by declaring the “damage” a No-Deal Brexit would cause would be “unfathomable”, predicting job losses across the country, and she insisted the Labour Party will do everything they possibly can to “stop” these issues.

“People have been making a lot of noise for Jeremy Corbyn to do something about it,” Naga Munchetty chimed in. “He’s left it pretty late hasn’t he?

“He’s not left it pretty late…” Bailey opposed, as Munchetty shot back: “Well… look at the time!”

But Bailey wouldn’t budge, as the MP insisted her party has been “clear since the referendum happened that we would do everything we possibly can to avoid a No-Deal situation”.

“We’ve attempted over the last two years to compromise,” the politician went on. “Even holding discussions with the government to try and find a compromise deal, but unfortunately we are in the situation we’re in now, and we’re running out of time unless we collaborate on a cross-party basis.

“That’s why I’m calling on Opposition parties and back-bench MPs to support Jeremy’s letter. We could be in a position where we do leave the European Union without a deal on the 31st October.”

Pressed by host Charlie Stayt to confirm whether or not Corbyn could be replaced with a different candidate should the government ask for change, Bailey refused to clarify one way or the other, eventually throwing out the question: “Well if it isn’t Jeremy, who would it be and who would determine that?”

But Munchetty was more concerned with the outcome if Corbyn gets his way and the government decides to hold another referendum.

“There’s the No-Deal Brexit that Boris Johnson’s offering, which would essentially be off the cards if Jeremy is Prime Minister, or remaining in the EU, what is he actually offering people to vote on?” the broadcast journalist demanded.

READ MORE: Dan Walker: BBC Breakfast host in shocking row with journalist

“Our official policy at the moment is to ensure that the public have their say in our terms of exit from the EU,” Bailey deflected once more, as Munchetty cut in to prompt the guest to confirm what it would say.

“In the event of the situation that we’re in at the moment,” Bailey continued. “So if it’s a bad deal then the Labour party would actively campaign for remain in terms of what Jeremy’s asking for…”

“So Labour party is now a Remain Party?” the alarmed presenter asked.

“In the event, as I say, that we end up with a no deal or a bad situation…” the went on, ignoring the question directly.

“Today? Today? What is it today?” Munchetty demanded once more.

“Today that’s the position we’re in…” Bailey clarified. “At the moment we’re facing a No-Deal or potentially a bad deal from this present government, and that would be unacceptable, so in the event that we went to a public vote under these circumstances, we would campaign for Remain.”

Munchetty insisted she was also a “member of the public”, and asked what her choices would be in the referendum should Corbyn come into power as the caretaker Prime Minister.

“Well what he’s asking for at the moment is an extension to Article 50 in order to call a general election,” Bailey said, again ignoring the question. “Now if the position’s changed after having had…

“He has said there will be a choice, what would be my choice?” Munchetty interrupted, and Bailey eventually confirmed there would be an option between “No-Deal and Remain”, insisting Labour don’t support No-Deal in any situation.

“At this time if there was to be a public vote it would be between No-Deal and Remain, because there are no other options as far as I’m aware. We know the Prime Minister hasn’t managed to secure any concessions or indeed tried to renegotiate any other deal so at present time those are the options,” the politician finished.

Earlier this week, sports reporter Sally Nugent apologised to weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood after taking a swipe out of the fan-favourite host.
