Lab-grown organ transplants aren’t right around the corner, but they may considerably closer than you think. University of Texas Medical Branch researchers have successfully tested bioengineered lungs in adult pigs, with no signs of medical complications. While it’s not certain how effective the lungs were at oxygenating the pigs, they developed the sturdy network of blood vessels needed to survive. The challenge, as you might guess, was producing a full structure that the pigs’ bodies would accept.

The team accomplished this by creating a lung scaffold from the organ of another animal using both detergent and sugar to wipe out all the cells and blood — only the proteins were left. After that, they immersed the scaffold in a tank filled with nutrients, and added the pigs’ own lung tissue cells using a “carefully designed protocol or recipe.” It took 30 days to foster the organs before they were ready for transplants, but they didn’t need infusions to keep working.

There’s still a while to go before human transplants are an option. In addition to the question of functionality, long-term viability is also a concern. The scientists only tracked the progress of the organs for two months, or just long enough to spot immediate trouble. They’ll need more studies to see how the lab-made lungs fare years down the road. Even so, the research group believes it could grow human-ready lungs in the next five to 10 years. That could prove invaluable to hospitals, which could end shortages of viable organs and improve their long-term transplant survival rates.

  • In February, the US Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) filed a petition to the USDA arguing that lab-grown meat startups should not be able to call their products “meat,” since they do not come from slaughtered animals. But this week, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) asked the USDA to regulate the startups as if they were traditional meat producers.
  • While so-called “cultured meat” products are not available in restaurants or supermarkets yet, a number of startups are attempting to make it more commercially feasible.
  • The debate will likely intensify.

For the first time, a major part of the US beef industry is taking aim at tech startups creating cultured meat — also known as lab-grown meat or clean meat — that’s grown in a lab using animal cells.

The industry is divided on how to do this, however.

  • Tyson Foods announced on Monday that it has invested in Memphis Meats, a startup that makes cultured meat.
  • Past investors have included Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and the food and agricultural giant Cargill.
  • Proponents of plant-based and lab-grown meat say that they are environmentally -friendly alternatives to traditional meat.
  • The meatless protein industry is expected to grow globally, despite the fact that meat consumption may hit an all-time high this year in the United States.

Tyson Foods — one of the largest meat producers in the world — is looking beyond the farm for chicken and beef.

On Monday, the company announced that its venture capital arm has invested in Memphis Meats, a Silicon Valley startup the grows meat in a lab. Tyson is not disclosing the value of the deal, which will focus on product development.

It will join Memphis Meats’ list of prominent backers, including Bill Gates, the food giant Cargill, and Richard Branson.

In February 2016, Memphis Meats said it had produced lab-grown meatballs made by cultivating cow muscle tissue in a sterile environment. In 2017, the startup announced that it created lab-grown chicken and duck as well. The team said it expects to reduce production costs over the next few years, and start offering its products to the public in 2021.

This isn’t the first time that Tyson has thrown support behind meat alternatives. In 2016, the company bought a 5% stake in Beyond Meat, a company that makes plant-based burgers, chicken, and sausage.

Proponents of food that mimics meat argue that it’s more environmentally friendly than raising traditional livestock. Globally, traditional animal farming accounts for about 18% of greenhouse emissions, uses 47,000 square miles of land annually, and exhausts 70% of the world’s water.

Tyson faced controversy in the last few years over allegations of price fixing and chicken abuse, but Tyson CEO Tom Hayes said the company is committed to contributing to a sustainable food system.

The plant-based meat industry is expected to grow globally in coming years, despite the fact that red meat consumption may hit an all-time high this year in the United States.

One-third of Americans are willing to eat lab-grown meat regularly https://briefnews.eu/one-third-of-americans-are-willing-to-eat-lab-grown-meat-regularly/ https://briefnews.eu/one-third-of-americans-are-willing-to-eat-lab-grown-meat-regularly/#respond Mon, 10 Apr 2017 01:54:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-third-of-americans-are-willing-to-eat-lab-grown-meat-regularly/

Are we on the cusp of the consumer biotech age, when lab-grown meat will be just as common as farmed meat? Recently, a company called Memphis Meats started selling in-vitro meat (IVM) that apparently tastes just like delicious chicken and duck. But if we want the price on an IVM burger to get below $ 1,000, we need consumers to buy lots of the stuff. That’s why two Australian researchers from the University of Queensland decided to study what the US public currently thinks about eating IVM.

Psychologist Matti Wilks and veterinary scientist Clive Phillips surveyed 673 people via Mechanical Turk, asking a wide range of questions about their backgrounds and attitudes toward meat eating. What they found is that roughly two-thirds of their subjects would be willing to try IVM, and a third thought it might become a regular part of their diets. Wilks and Phillips suggest that this means people are open to eating IVM, but don’t think it would replace farmed meat.

That said, none of these subjects had ever eaten IVM before. Given that 79 percent of them were concerned that IVM would lack flavor or aesthetic appeal, it’s possible they might change their minds if it tasted exactly like farmed meat. Many people were also dissuaded by the idea of paying more for IVM than farmed meat. Presumably these subjects might become regular consumers if IVM were tasty and affordable.

Beyond beef: biotech food startup Memphis Meats just unveiled lab-grown chicken https://briefnews.eu/beyond-beef-biotech-food-startup-memphis-meats-just-unveiled-lab-grown-chicken/ https://briefnews.eu/beyond-beef-biotech-food-startup-memphis-meats-just-unveiled-lab-grown-chicken/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 18:08:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beyond-beef-biotech-food-startup-memphis-meats-just-unveiled-lab-grown-chicken/ Last year, it was the “world’s first clean meatball” that helped Memphis Meats grab headlines in February. In November, the startup launched an Indiegogo campaign with plans to grow cultured poultry meat in the lab. Today, the company announced that it has successfully served chicken and duck meat without having raised or slaughtered a bird.

“It is thrilling to introduce the first chicken and duck that didn’t require raising animals,” Uma Valeti, co-founder and CEO of Memphis Meats, said in a press release. “This is a historic moment for the clean meat movement.”

To create its “clean” meat, Memphis Meats puts living animal cells into bioreactor tanks and feeds them oxygen, sugars, and minerals until they divide and grow. The company said the taste and texture is similar to that of the real thing, just a bit spongier, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Chicken is a significant part of the American diet, with some 90 pounds eaten by the average consumer every year. Duck, on the other hand, is hugely popular in China, where more than six billion pounds are consumed in total each year, according to Memphis Meats. That’s a lot of bird.

“Chicken and duck are at the center of the table in so many cultures around the world, but the way conventional poultry is raised creates huge problems for the environment, animal welfare, and human health,” Valeti said. “It is also inefficient. We aim to produce meat in a better way, so that it is delicious, affordable and sustainable. We really believe this is a significant technological leap for humanity, and an incredible business opportunity — to transform a giant global industry while contributing to solving some of the most urgent sustainability issues of our time.”

Although the company has served it’s cultured poultry to taste testers, the meat is still prohibitively expensive. It currently costs around $ 9,000 to produce a pound of Memphis Meats’ poultry, compared to a bit over $ 3 on average for a pound of chicken breast. However, the company hopes to reduce costs drastically as it refines its technology over the next few years. It hopes to launch a commercial product in 2021.

San Francisco-based startup Memphis Meats says it has made the world’s first lab-grown chicken strips from animal cells.

On March 14, Memphis Meats invited a handful of taste-testers to their kitchen to try it. And according to the company, they said it tastes just like chicken.

“It is thrilling to introduce the first chicken and duck that didn’t require raising animals. This is a historic moment for the clean meat movement,” Memphis Meats’ cofounder and CEO, Uma Valeti, said in a press release.

In February 2016, the company said it had produced lab-grown meatballs, made by cultivating cow muscle tissue in a sterile environment. In addition to chicken, Memphis Meat announced on March 15 that it has cultivated lab-grown duck as well. The team said it expects to reduce production costs over the next few years, and start offering its products to the public in 2021.

Memphis Meats is one of many startups aiming to cut down on our reliance on traditional meat. Dr. Mark Post, researcher in Maastricht, Netherlands, made a lab-grown burger in 2013 and subsequently launched a company called Mosa Meats to further his work. Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat sell plant-based beef and chicken that taste eerily similar to the real thing.

They’re all hoping to disrupt America’s $ 200 billion meat industry (and $ 48 billion poultry industry), by offering foods that mimic meat but are more environmentally friendly.

Meat production is harsh on the planet. Globally, traditional livestock farming accounts for about 18% of greenhouse emissions, uses 47,000 square miles of land annually, and exhausts 70% of the world’s water.

Clean Poulty TeamMemphis Meats

Memphis Meats says it can produce beef and poultry much more efficiently (indoors and without killing animals). However, as Business Insider’s Ariel Schwartz previously reported, lab-grown meat still requires fetal serum, which comes from unborn calves and chicks, to start the cultivation process. Memphis Meats told The Wall Street Journal in 2016 that it expects to replace the serum with something plant-based soon.

It also estimates its current technology can yield 1 pound of chicken meat for less than $ 9,000— which is half of what it cost the startup to make 1 pound of its beef meatballs about a year ago. That said, $ 9,000 is still incredibly expensive, and lab-grown meat’s costly production is one of the reasons why Memphis Meat has not been able to go to market yet. For comparison, boneless chicken breast costs about $ 3.22 per pound to produce in the US.

Chicken is the most popular protein in the country. The average American ate about 90 pounds of poultry in 2016, according to the USDA. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that chicken will come the world’s most-consumed meat by 2020. (Pork currently holds that title.)
