The award-winning Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen is coming to the big screen. The musical, which features songs by La La Land and The Greatest Showman team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, has been running on Broadway since 2016, and took home Best Musical, Best Score, Best Actor in a Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 71st Tony Awards. Stephen Chbosky, director of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the recent Wonder, is in early negotiations to direct.

It was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling for Dear Evan Hansen, the toe-tapping musical about mental illness and suicide. Broadway musicals are a dime a dozen, but a musical that manages to last always gets attention. More often than not, the big stage musicals on Broadway will close after a few months of shows. But every now and then, something with cultural weight comes along. Hamilton is obviously the best recent example – a musical that will probably play until the end of time, due to how successful it’s been.

But Dear Evan Hansen is no slouch either. The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 2016, is still going strong. One of the biggest signs of success on Broadway is recoupment – making the money invested back, and turning a profit. Dear Evan Hansen has done that, and then some. Last year, it was announced the show had “recouped its $ 9.5 million capitalization costs about eight months after the show began performances on Broadway.” Since then, a National tour has begun, a West End production is expected to open in London next year, and the musical has been adapted into a young adult novel.

And now here comes the movie. Deadline reports Universal Pictures is making a Dear Evan Hansen movie, and that they hope to land Stephen Chbosky as a director. Chbosky has experience telling stories about teens going through troubled experience, having written the Perks of Being a Wallflower novel, and then adapting it into a film himself.

Dear Evan Hansen “tells the story of a young man with social anxiety disorder who so yearns to make a connection with his peers that he fabricates a relationship with a deceased student to become closer to the boy’s family. When a classmate commits suicide, shy Evan Hansen finds himself at the center of the tragedy and turmoil. In a misguided attempt to comfort the boy’s grieving family, Evan pretends that he was actually good friends with their son. He invents a fabricated email account to prove their friendship, and when a fake suicide note makes its way online, Evan finds himself the unintended face of a viral video about loneliness and friendship.”

I’ve never seen the show, but I have heard the soundtrack, with music from Greatest Showman songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – and it’s quite good, thanks very much in part to the lead performance of Ben Platt, who has one killer singing voice. Dear Evan Hansen has enough great songs, and enough of a strong message, that it could make for a fantastic film embraced by audiences young and old. Or it could end up being like the terrible Les Misérables movie directed by Tom Hooper! Who knows. In the meantime, listen to my favorite song from the show below.

Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won an Oscar last year for writing La La Land‘s “City of Stars,” and they were nominated at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony for their work on The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Though they went home empty-handed last night, losing to Coco‘s Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, Pasek and Paul revealed one heck of a consolation prize: they’ve written two brand new songs for Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin. Find out about the two Aladdin songs below.

Speaking with Variety (via The Playlist) on the red carpet before the Oscars began last night, the duo revealed that they’ve joined the Disney family by crafting two new songs for Ritchie’s upcoming remake:

Alan Menken is the legendary composer who, along with people like John Williams, James Horner, and Jerry Goldsmith, essentially scored the childhoods of cinephiles growing up in the ’80s and ’90s. Menken was responsible for the enduring tunes from Walt Disney Animation’s animated renaissance, providing scores for films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, and Tangled. He has plenty of memorable live-action credits as well, including Little Shop of Horrors and one of my personal favorites, The Newsies.

There’s no word about what exactly these songs will be about or if they will replace any of the beloved songs from the original animated classic, but I know people have mixed feelings about new songs being slotted into these live-action Disney remakes. Anecdotally, most people I’ve spoken to didn’t like “Evermore” from Beauty and the Beast, but I thought it added some nice emotion to the Beast character that wasn’t present in the animated version. Hopefully Paul and Pasek were able to create something that can either improve upon the songs of the original or at least stand alongside them without feeling too out of place.

The pair got their big break with the short-lived musical TV series Smash in 2013, and have since returned to TV by writing “Runnin’ Home to You,” a song that appeared on a special episode of The CW’s The Flash last year:

The only thing Pasek and Paul have to worry about now is topping this amazing Will Smith rap that The Good Place writer Demi Adejuyigbe jokingly tried to pass off as a real song that will play over the end credits of the upcoming movie:

Aladdin arrives in theaters on May 24, 2019.

New Oscar Rules In Place to Prevent Repeat of ‘La La Land’/’Moonlight’ Mix-Up https://briefnews.eu/new-oscar-rules-in-place-to-prevent-repeat-of-la-la-land-moonlight-mix-up/ https://briefnews.eu/new-oscar-rules-in-place-to-prevent-repeat-of-la-la-land-moonlight-mix-up/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 02:00:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-oscar-rules-in-place-to-prevent-repeat-of-la-la-land-moonlight-mix-up/ Oscar Rules

It’s officially Oscar season! To prepare for Hollywood’s big, self-congratulatory night, PricewaterhouseCoopers, the consulting service that handles the envelopes containing the names of the official Academy Award Winners, have implemented a new set of rules to help avoid a repeat of last year’s embarrassing Moonlight/La La Land mix-up.

Last year’s Academy Awards were memorable not so much for the films that won, but rather for the unprecedented goof that occurred at the end of the evening. In case you’ve forgotten, since it seems like it happened approximately ten thousand years ago, Bonnie and Clyde stars Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took the stage to announce the winner of Best Picture. But someone backstage handed Beatty and Dunaway the wrong envelope. Rather than the envelope containing the real Best Picture winner, what Beatty and Dunaway had was an envelope announcing Emma Stone as Best Actress of La La Land. After the envelope was opened, Beatty and Dunaway floundered, realizing something was amiss. Dunaway caught sight of La La Land on the card within the envelope, and promptly announced the Damien Chazelle musical as the winner. But there was a problem: La La Land was not the Best Picture winner – Moonlight was. By the time the mistake had been realized, the cast and filmmakers behind La La Land had already taken the stage. The rest is Oscar history. Here, watch a video of the moment and try not to cringe!

In a new AP story, Tim Ryan, U.S. chairman and senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), discusses the infamous mix-up, and reveals new rules that have been put in place to prevent it from every happening again. “One of the most disappointing things to me was all the great work that had been done, not only last year but over the last 83 years, around accuracy, confidentiality integrity of that process,” Ryan says in the AP story. “And where we got it wrong was on the handing over of the envelope.”

The piece then goes on to lay out the new rules that will ensure such a goof never happens again, including:

— The addition of a third balloting partner, who will sit with Oscar producers in the show’s control room. Just like the balloting partners stationed on either side of the Dolby Theatre stage, this person will have a complete set of winners’ envelopes and commit the winners to memory. “Think of it as a safety control,” Ryan said.

— The two partners who worked on last year’s Academy Awards have been replaced, though Ryan confirms that both still work for PwC. The new stage-side partners overseeing the envelopes will include Rick Rosas, who previously worked in that post for 14 years, and colleague Kimberly Bourdon from the company’s Los Angeles office.

— A new formal procedure is in place for when envelopes are handed over. Both the celebrity presenter and a stage manager will confirm that they’ve been given the correct envelope for the category they are about to present. (Last year’s gaffe occurred when the PwC representative accidentally gave presenters the envelope for best actress rather than best picture.)

— All three balloting partners will attend show rehearsals and practice what to do if something goes wrong. “Because, as you’re well aware, it took a long time to respond last year when there was a mistake that we made,” Ryan said. “So we’re formally practicing the what-ifs.”

– The final change is one the academy immediately instituted last year: PwC partners are prohibited from using cellphones or social media during the show.

So there you have it. Don’t expect a repeat of the Moonlight/La La Land fiasco this year. That doesn’t mean an entirely new set of mistakes won’t happen, of course. The Academy Awards will air March 4, 2018.

‘The Greatest Showman’ Featurettes: The ‘La La Land’ Composers Have Outdone Themselves https://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-showman-featurettes-the-la-la-land-composers-have-outdone-themselves/ https://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-showman-featurettes-the-la-la-land-composers-have-outdone-themselves/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2017 23:14:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-greatest-showman-featurettes-the-la-la-land-composers-have-outdone-themselves/ the greatest showman featurettes

While there may be a lot of mystery surrounding whether The Greatest Showman is any good or not — the review embargo remains while the movie swoops up surprise Golden Globe nominations for best comedy/musical and best actor — there is no mystery to the fact that this is a straight-up musical.

And these new The Greatest Showman featurettes are here to remind you of that, offering you plenty of clips of Hugh Jackman buoyantly dancing to the songs written by the acclaimed composers of La La Land.

There’s a lot of hyperbole going on in The Greatest Showman — the most obvious being the title. But it’s trickled down to all aspects of the film as well, with director Michael Gracey claiming “What [composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul] have created, it’s the best work they’ve ever done.” Since these are the composers behind the Oscar-winning La La Land and the Tony Award-winning Dear Evan Hansen, that’s high praise. But considering The Greatest Showman‘s recent Golden Globe nomination for best original song, perhaps it’s not too far off.

The two featurettes dive into the songwriting process that Pasek and Paul underwent to create the pop-Broadway hybrid songs that are woven throughout The Greatest Showman. Jackman praises the two for writing 24/7, on planes, trains, and supposedly automobiles, and expresses maybe a little disappointment that they got big before The Greatest Showman could have been the ones to “discover” them. But what else would The Greatest Showman marketing team have put on their trailers and posters?

The first featurette explores the radio-friendly songs of The Greatest Showman, including Golden Globe best original song nominee, “This Is Me.” The second featurette is all about the difficulty in creating a full-fledged original musical, which Pasek and Paul still tackle with trepidation even after the acclaim for their songs in Dear Evan Hansen. Maybe that’s the mark of a great showman.

Here is the synopsis of The Greatest Showman:

Inspired by the imagination of P. T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

The Greatest Showman stars Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Keala Settle, and Zendaya. The film hits theaters on December 20, 2017.

Although we liked the Mercedes-Benz X-class pickup when we drove it in Chile last month, the company is probably right in not bringing it to the U.S. market: It’s too small to compete with American full-size trucks, and with its current 2.3-liter four-banger, it would fall short of the power desired by our market. How about something different, such as a passenger-car-based pickup? Mercedes-Benz built one before, an El Camino for the Argentine market.

–

Mercedes-Benz once built a pickup version of its indestructible W115-body mid-size sedan, and it was offered with a single or double cab. The pickup was assembled in Argentina between 1972 and 1976, at a time when it was forbidden to import cars and trucks into the country. But it was possible to assemble them locally in the form of CKD (completely knocked down) production, with imported mechanical and body parts. The truck was made at Daimler’s González Catán production site, a plant that’s currently gearing up for production of the Sprinter.

–

Mercedes-Benz 220D El Camino

–

Affecionately called La Pickup in Argentina, this W115 is powered by the sturdy OM615 2.2-liter diesel engine, rated at a modest 60 horsepower. It was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission.

–

The two-door version is arguably prettier; the weird-looking four-door pickup kept the door frames of the sedan but got an upright rear window. Both versions were fitted with upright taillights.

–

Most of the trucks remained in Argentina, where they have become a rare sight. A few were brought to Europe; the example photographed here was used by Stuttgart’s SSB railway company, where it was used by personnel in charge of lubricating switches. It was later purchased by a private owner and converted into a camper. That’s why the tailgate is closed off and the vertical taillights have been replaced by the horizontal taillights of the sedan. Pretty, but not original.

–

–

The 220D La Pickup is the closest you can get to a German El Camino. Of course, a 60-hp diesel won’t quite cut it when compared to its U.S.-made brother in spirit. Even as a sedan, the 220D’s top speed was a mere 83 mph. It is safe to assume a La Pickup could barely scratch 80 mph.

–

But there is inspiration here for a Mercedes pickup that could be sold the United States. We want a modern E-class La Pickup.

MondoCon 2017: Unused and Abandoned Art For ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Doctor Strange,’ ‘La La Land’ and More https://briefnews.eu/mondocon-2017-unused-and-abandoned-art-for-stranger-things-doctor-strange-la-la-land-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/mondocon-2017-unused-and-abandoned-art-for-stranger-things-doctor-strange-la-la-land-and-more/#respond Fri, 10 Nov 2017 11:22:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mondocon-2017-unused-and-abandoned-art-for-stranger-things-doctor-strange-la-la-land-and-more/ IMG_3757

MondoCon is one of the best places on the planet to check out and purchase pop culture art. However, it is also a destination for those interested in pop culture art that never actually made it to the printer.

At the annual Mondo Talk panel, the Mondo brain trust revealed posters and art for movies like Doctor Strange and TV shows like Stranger Things that never came to fruition. Some of the posters stalled because they couldn’t come together creatively. Others became tangled in licensing red tape. A few of them never came together because people simply stopped answering emails. But you can check them out, in all of their sometimes unfinished glory, below.

Artist Eric Powell was tasked with designing a pint glass for War for the Planet of the Apes and he took the title literally, depicting an angry Caesar armed with a rifle. When the studio sent back a note saying the image was “too violent,” Powell fired off a joke version called “Nonviolent Conflict for the Planet of the Apes.” Eventually, the pint glass was completed with different art.

IMG_3712
IMG_3713

Speaking of pint glasses and studio notes, artist Becky Cloonan worked on a Wonder Woman pint glass that never came to fruition. First, the studio rejected the content of the art (they weren’t happy with the classical approach of the first version or the arrows of the second). When the third version prompted a note asking them to make Wonder Woman smile, the decision was made to drop it altogether.

How does an incredible Looney Tunes piece fail to come together despite being completely finished and ready to go? When the estate of one of the names in the credits block never calls you back.

IMG_3718
IMG_3719

Artist Jason Edmiston has previously made gorgeous depictions of classic Batman villains from the ’60s TV series and had every intention to keep it going. Alas, his portrait of The Penguin never made it beyond the planning stages.

IMG_3720

Mondo was dead set on making a poster for classic Mario Bava horror film Black Sunday and Randy Ortiz created numerous versions to appease star Barbara Steele, who had to sign off on her likeness. After finally completing the poster to her exact specifications and only needing her final approval, she stopped returning their emails. Mondo hopes that the poster will see the light of day at some point.

IMG_3722
IMG_3723
IMG_3725

Mondo has made a poster for every Marvel Cinematic Universe movie so far…except Doctor Strange. As you can see from the art below, they certainly tried. Marvel rejected the first version because Dormammu looks significantly different in the final film and they rejected the second version because Strange never actually uses the flying lotus position in the film. The third take, a stylized depiction of the Sorcerer Supreme splintered by the mirror dimension, never got beyond this early design and Mondo hopes it can be finished one day.

IMG_3726
IMG_3728
IMG_3727
IMG_3729

This Captain Phillips poster never got printed for one reason and one reason only: someone at the studio demanded that they send over several alternate designs. Rather than create art simply so it can be rejected so this one could be approved (which was apparently the process they were facing), they decided to move on.

IMG_3737

Tomer Hanuka was tasked with creating a Full Metal Jacket poster, but his earliest sketches failed to win the approval of Stanley Kubrick’s estate. Kubrick’s estate felt that this image did not sum up the entire film. Mondo disagreed. So they parted ways on this project.

IMG_3740

Artist Sam Wolfe Connelly is known for his dark and creepy horror art, so he’d be a perfect match for Hannibal, right? You can see the evolution of his poster from bleakly hilarious initial concept to finished product below. However, the studio felt that Mads Mikkelsen should be in the poster and it was dropped.

IMG_3741

IMG_3743
IMG_3745
IMG_3744

Matthew Woodson’s subtle and brilliant poster for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off never got beyond the stages seen below, torpedoed by both likeness rights and…sports jersey rights. Yep.

IMG_3746
IMG_3747

None of these Drive posters will see the light of day because Mondo no longer holds the Drive license. However, the panel noted that Ryan Gosling himself is a fan of these designs and they hope to get it made at some point.

IMG_3749
IMG_3750
IMG_3751

The panel was split on the variant for Rory Kurtz’s The Dark Knight, which featured extensive vandalism from the Joker. Ultimately, they decided to simply not make the variant, as there wasn’t enough enthusiasm for it (even from Kurtz himself).

IMG_3754

Why were these gorgeous La La Land posters never approved and brought to completion? It’s simple, really: they fell out of touch with the right people at the studio to make it happen. And that’s how a beautiful poster dies.

IMG_3755
IMG_3756

At one point, Netflix wanted to release the Stranger Things soundtrack on audio cassette and Mondo was tasked with delivering art on a tight timeframe. Martin Ansin got the gig and chose to embrace the series’ John Carpenter side instead of its Steven Spielberg side. The soundtrack was never released in that form and Ansin’s art was never used, but it sure is gorgeous.

Dylan McDermott & Dermot Mulroney to Appear on FOX’s ‘LA to Vegas’ Together, Confusing Everyone https://briefnews.eu/dylan-mcdermott-dermot-mulroney-to-appear-on-foxs-la-to-vegas-together-confusing-everyone/ https://briefnews.eu/dylan-mcdermott-dermot-mulroney-to-appear-on-foxs-la-to-vegas-together-confusing-everyone/#respond Sat, 23 Sep 2017 17:27:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dylan-mcdermott-dermot-mulroney-to-appear-on-foxs-la-to-vegas-together-confusing-everyone/ Dermot Mulroney - Dylan McDermott - LA to Vegas TV Series

For years, audiences have had trouble telling apart actors Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney. There’s even an entire Saturday Night Live game show sketch with contestants trying to pinpoint which is which. Now audiences will be even more confused, because the two actors are going to appear together in a new TV show coming to FOX early next year.

LA to Vegas is one of FOX’s new comedy programs that will debut on the network in the midseason. The series, which is executive produced by Adam McKay (The Big Short), Will Ferrell (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), Lon Zimmet (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), and Steve Levitan (Modern Family), follows Dylan McDermott (the one from Miracle on 34th Street and The Practice) as the captain of a plane from Jackpot Airlines, which flies the same roundtrip flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas for all those people looking for a big win on the strip. The part Mulroney is taking on the series will be a guest role that will allow the two actors to play off each other magnificently.

For those who haven’t heard of the LA to Vegas TV series until now, here’s the trailer from the upfronts:

McDermott plays Captain Dave, a narcissistic pilot whose fighter-pilot dreams never quite worked out. As for Dermot Mulroney (the one from My Best Friend’s Wedding and New Girl), The Hollywood Reporter reveals he’ll be playing Captain Steve, a charismatic pilot with better international routes and an attitude that really gets on Captain Dave’s nerves. You can expect McDermott and Mulroney to hurl plenty of insults at each other, and hopefully there will be some kind of meta reference to the fact that audiences always confuse them.

This will be the first time that Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney have appeared together in a movie or TV series, though we did come close with that aforementioned game show sketch:

With Dylan McDermott and Dermot Mulroney facing off, we can only hope that Derbel McDillet is next to get a guest spot on LA to Vegas, followed closely by Rupert Everett.

For those of you who may be looking for more information about LA to Vegas, here’s the official synopsis:

Welcome to Jackpot Airlines, a budget carrier whose junket flight from LA to Vegas and back again, is filled with dreamers looking for that big score. Holding (or, more to the point, barely holding) these voyages together is Ronnie (Kim Matula), a long-suffering flight attendant who tries to keep her cool (oftentimes, with little success) whether she’s dealing with a bi-polar bride-to-be or the dead body in Row 13. Managing the revolving door of bachelor parties and 21st birthdays gets even trickier when Ronnie develops a “location-ship” with Colin (Ed Weeks), a regular passenger and an economics professor, whose son and soon-to-be ex-wife live in Vegas. Further complicating her job every weekend is Captain Dave (Dylan McDermott), the narcissistic pilot whose fighter-pilot dreams never quite worked out; Bernard (Nathan Lee Graham), the always-positive career flight attendant who thinks there’s no flight more magical than the LA-to-Vegas; Artem (Peter Stormare), the genial professional gambler who serves as the plane’s resident (but unofficial) bookie; and Nichole (Olivia Macklin), the sweet-natured, part-time stripper who’s a lot savvier than people realize. It won’t be easy, but this unlikely group of miscreants and dreamers will eventually go from being strangers on a plane to a supportive, if unconventional, family…from Friday to Sunday…whether they like it or not.

LA to Vegas premieres on FOX sometime in 2018.

‘La La Land’ Director Damien Chazelle is Making a Musical Series for Netflix https://briefnews.eu/la-la-land-director-damien-chazelle-is-making-a-musical-series-for-netflix/ https://briefnews.eu/la-la-land-director-damien-chazelle-is-making-a-musical-series-for-netflix/#respond Sun, 03 Sep 2017 18:00:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/la-la-land-director-damien-chazelle-is-making-a-musical-series-for-netflix/ Damien Chazelle

The Academy Award-winning director behind La La Land and Whiplash, Damien Chazelle, is joining forces with Netflix and screenwriter Jack Thorne (Star Wars: Episode IX) for a musical called The Eddy. Chazelle will direct two of the eight episodes, which are all set in Paris, France. After how lavish and dreamy Chazelle made Los Angeles look in La La Land, I can’t wait to see what he does with Paris.

Below, learn more about the Damien Chazelle Netflix musical series.

Back in April, we learned the project was being shopped around to cable networks and streaming services, but now we know a little bit more. The story is about a Paris jazz club and focuses on the owner, the band, and the city. It’s set in present day and deals heavily with the relationship between the American and French-Arab co-owners of the club, complete with roles for French, English, and Arabic speaking talent.

Netflix’s VP of international originals, Erik Barmack, told Variety the series will feature French actors, crew members, and maybe some directors. Barmack described The Eddy as “somewhere in between” Whiplash and La La Land, “From the intense, complex relationship between a jazz drummer and his instructor in Whiplash to his dazzling duo of lovelorn Los Angelenos in La La Land, Damien’s work is emotional and electrifying.”

As for Chazelle, he’s “always dreamed of shooting in Paris.” He’s working with some real heavy-hitters on The Eddy, including six-time Grammy winner, Glen Ballard. The composer and producer worked with Michael Jackson on “Bad” and “Thriller,” in addition to co-writing and producing Alanis Morissette’s finest album, “Jagged Little Pill,” which Diablo Cody is adapting into a stage musical. Ballard is writing the original score for the Netflix series, which Six Feet Under and The Newsroom‘s Alan Poul is executive producing.

Chazelle has now joined the list of some of today’s top filmmakers working with Netflix, which already includes Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), David Fincher (House of Cards), the Coen Brothers (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Ava DuVernay (The 13th), David Michód (War Machine) and others. More and more great directors keep turning to these streaming services. Though Amazon’s list is just as impressive: Woody Allen (Crisis in Six Scenes), Barry Jenkins (Underground Railroad), David O. Russell (an untilted gangster project), Yorgos Lanthimos (an untitled Oliver North project), and Nicolas Winding Refn (Too Old to Die Young).

I imagine a few networks were interested in a Damien Chazzelle musical series after the success of La La Land, but Netflix seems like a great home for the filmmaker, to hopefully help tell the story how he sees fit. La La Land is such a joyful musical with both heartbreak and wonder. If he can capture even a small portion of that magic with his Netflix show, we’re in for a treat. When the filmmaker will fit The Eddy into his busy schedule is unknown at the moment. He’s currently working on the Neil Armstrong biopic, First Man, which Jon Bernthal joined the cast of only yesterday. He’s shooting that ambitious drama starting in November, with a fourth-quarter 2018 release date already locked down.
